Was going to say similar - have been looking into this and Open Xenium is what I'm thinking. For a cheap mod chip getting an Aladdin can be viable too.
The Aladdin chip in my XBOX still does its job without a hiccup. Works like a charm. And I opted for a different hdmi solution than Electron's X-Out, because the X-Out it's way more expensive if you live in Europe. It's basically double the price, so not cheap at all.
@@DuneRunnerEnterprises If you live in the USA, then grab an X-Out. For me it wasn't an option, since I don't live there. So, I built myself an adapter. However, many people don't have the know-how or the hardware available to build themselves one, so online retail services are the way to go. There are cheaper solutions if you search for them.
@@DuneRunnerEnterprises My comment to you got deleted. Hope at least this one, won't. I did my own HDMI adapter. I couldn't get the sata ssd I was installing to consistently boot without using an 80 wire, I had the exact same adapter as well. Not sure if it is because it was an ssd, but it booted once every 10 times after installing xbmc4gamers
@machinerin151 as opposed to what? The xbox is 40 pins. He's saying you are supposed to use an 80 wires, 40 pin cable since the higher udma modes the adapter uses will be more suseptible to noise. It will work one minute, then not boot the next. It is pretty much mandatory, idk why it was skipped. Probably did change it but just left out of the video
@@Hadzz95 80 wires means a ground for all 40 live wires. That type of cable mainly reduces crosstalk. It can be used with a stock system to stand in for a bad cable, but to little potential benefit.
@Code7Unltd yes I know, that's why I called it 40 pin 80 wire. Obviously its not necessary for stock drives, but it basically is necessary for these startech sata adapters. Half the time it won't boot without an 80 wire cable, stock bios or otherwise

I did these mods on my original Xbox as well and I really love what the guys over at MakeMhz did with their HDMI mod. It's soo good! Feels great to load up some Halo 2 or other favorites and be able to enjoy them on a modern HDTV. 😀
I soft modded mine and it's still working perfectly, I have all games up to N64 and even if I can't run Shadows of the empire, my N64 died before this beast... I did a whole video on soft modding but I got it taken down like 20 years ago... it's awesome, I've used it in the last year, hotkeys (buttons) work and it's pretty much an SNES9x/NES/N64/Sega/MAME/PS1/XBMC workhorse there are others, but I can't believe a $300 machine is still so fun to bring on vacation to play Mario Kart 64 and/or random mods with family. I think it is actually one of the first times my family saw 1080p content downloaded on the TV. It was a proof of concept and the TV didn't have computer input... okay I've made my point. EVERY SINGLE GAME. EDIT: I still can't find Doki Doki Panic rom (the one that Nintendo skinned to make Mario 2 US version... hmu if you have it.
The Nintendo 64 and the OG Xbox were my favorite consoles growing up. Discovering Xbox live back in 2002-03 for the first time and being able to talk to people from around the world and play online with each other was so mind boggling and crazy at that time. It really was the first online social media place even before TH-cam, MySpace, Skype, and Facebook existed.
I remember me and my brother modding his Xbox back in the day and playing Halo 2 on Xbox Connect. The lobbies were full of everyone with modified names with buttons in them etc. My favorite map/gun pack back then was the paintball one
It’s crazy dude. YOU were the reason I got into OG Xbox modding from a video titled “I made the emulators” and “modding the OG Xbox in 2017” way before you had the beard lol
This brought back some memories... I have 2 OG Xbox consoles back home, one soft modded and the other is chipped. I can't even begin to describe the value that I got of these machines, despite owning a good PC back then. Back in the day, we had manually record the HD key and locking the new HD after installation so you can access the OG kernel if you wanted to boot without the mod enabled. It seems things have gotten easier since then. One of my favorite consoles of all time!
Nice video you hooked it up and dvd 2xbox pretty good I still have that on my Xbox since 2004 it still going strong nice video seeing new stuff might upgrade my stuff with the new stuff like just a bigger hardrive
Like many others this was the first console I modded simply so I could play retro games. I used to mod these for friends. I still have one in my house. Essential console for anyone who loves games.
Years back I struggled to sell an original modded XBOX in perfect new like condition. I drove it to the buyer, that accidentally purchased it. No one wanted them.
One thing that I didn't see go in that I would highly recommend would be replacing the stock 20 wire 40 pin cable with a 40 wire one. It allows for higher bandwidth on the HDD.
Love my OG Xbox. Still using the same one i've had since it was new. I finally have to replace my CD drive belt, but other than that just some normal open dusting and its good to go. Its been rock solid. There's also a certain charm in just powering it up, sticking in a game disk, and your ready to play.
Thank you for this content - I didn't realize that the stellar mod chip has been updated. My favorite system, I have several that I tinker with. Please keep creating!
Xbox was the first and only console that I went crazy modding back in the day. I gave it a paint job, I removed the green emblem on the top and replaced it with a clear plastic with LEDs under it. Mod chip, HDD upgrade. I had so much fun with that Frankenstein of a console.
I've had so much fun rebuilding my high school/college xbox on the emulator that I bought one to mod and happen to be doing it today. I'll be using the old method of softmod with xboxhdm and ndure. As always, thank you again for all your hard work.
I like to put a 2-pin header in place of the old clock capacitor, then use an old PC case wire to connect a capacitor that I can keep far away from the mainboard.
Bought one 20 years ago with an xecuter 3, just had it all stripped down cleaner and repaired where needed. Now has a 4TB drive emulating everything from PS1 backwards great console
3:47 The funny thing is that, some years back, I bought a modded Wii 2 HDMI adapter that was modded for an Original Xbox adapter off of eBay, and, to my utter shock, it actually was really bloody impressive, dare I say it looked better on Xbox than on Wii, and seeing that adapter reminded me of that purchase
I bought an Xbox at the thrift store a few years ago for $30 CAD with a 20% off coupon because I donated some clothes. It had a weird sticker on the front so I googled what it said only to find out it was a badge for a mod chip. I booted it up and sure enough, the thing was already chipped lol Now the mod chip was a fairly old one but it still did the bulk of what I wanted. Absolute win for a thrift store buy.
I got a modded Xbox for christmas in 2003 when I was 10 years old, and I remember being completely in awe at the fact I could just borrow a friend's game and copy it over to mine and have it forever. If I'm honest it still blows me away that you could do that with 2003 technology.
Ah you missed the days of 8 bit when games were on cassette, just put the original in a double deck boombox with a blank in the other and away you go. My whole collection was copied
Ahh the good old day's. When Halo matchmaking was battle of the mods past level 38ish. Whatever modder got host connection won with their hacks. Non host hacks were broken due to it being the map file served from on the hosts machine.
Hard to believe that the original Xbox is 23 years old. When it was new a 23 year old console would be the Atari VCS which seemed like an antique by 2001.
My OG Xbox runs XBMC with a KODI style skin. I used to run it with the XB360 blades skin but KODI all greened out seems to just be cleaner and easier to navigate. I also have an Avaluanch xbe that I can boot from KODI so that I can use the PC app to transfer games. I also have Insignia set up and a 1tb HDD. Since I expanded the HDD I have about 40 games on there and extra room for movies/TV shows that are in 4:3 SD. It's quite the all in one box for me. 💚
Please check the contents of the HDD for lost Xbox Live content with either Pinecone or XCAT. For DVD2Xbox I hope you turned off all ACL patching. if you are ripping discs with DVD2Xbox and hoping to use them for Insignia, ACL patches even if the game is packaged as an ISO will cause each game to fail to download Title Updates.
This video was a great watch, really exciting to see old hardware get upgraded for ease of use for modern enviroments. I am quite impressed by the modders that upgraded the RAM aswell as putting a 1.4 Ghz CPU in there. Apparently the performance gains for games are quite noticeable.
MVG OG Xbox video? Nice! Also, I just rock the clock cap back and forth until it comes off, I think this is safer than using clippers cause as you said you could damage something else if you're not careful. Thanks for the video! You got me into Xbox modding
I modded my Xbox 20 years ago with a solderless chip. I'll have to pull it out again and power it up to make sure it works still. I did recently upgrade the hard drive to a SATA drive with adapter. Mine has EvolutionX dashboard. I wish the websites I used for the information were still around, though I might check the wayback machine. I am amazed that I was able to get my Xbox modded the way it is. I could not tell you where I would have to begin as for the real modding process now. I may look for the clock capacitor though.
I got one untested for 20usd at goodwill. Totally worked with the cables I have. Came pre modded too. It was an old install and I was able to update by burning a disc. Just gotta get an adapter for a new HDD and upgrade ide cable. Not in any real hurry. Got two PS2s, a PC, a gba sp, an N64, and a PS1 I'm in the process of fixing too lol
@7:10, should be noted with the new Endgame exploit, specific games are not required to softmod anymore. Just a way to get the save on the Xbox console (USB adapter or Memory Card transfer from another modded Xbox)
I just grabbed silent hill 2 for my original xbox which I still use all the time. I have 100 games for it give or take. GameCube and original Xbox are my two favorite systems.
I would also recommend the Brook Wingman XB2 adapter along with an original xbox controller cable to usb. This allows you to connect an Xbox one and Series Controllers to the original xbox which work better than the S controller. You can also use that adapter on an xbox 360 as well.
I did a soft mod recently. I believe it was a variant of this rocky5 setup but the one I used needed my splinter cell to load a save file. I did however have to go through about a dozen various usb sticks/microSD adapters until I found one that was JUST old enough to work. It was a quirky ancient microSD adapter to usb. Allowed everything to work flawlessly paired with the controller cord to usb input cable I bought. With a softmod and patience for ftp transfers, you probably only need to add a new HDD and you’ll be good to go. Component cable output to RT4K makes for an excellent picture.
You can get a complete cap replacement kit for the mainboard and PSU. Replacing the fan with a silent one is also a good idea. And if you're fancy you can get a IDE to SATA adapter and install an SSD.
I've always used unleash x as my dashboard, but I've also got an old setup. I would love to modernize the console, add more memory, and see if a mod chip can bios switch between standard Xbox and chihiro but I don't even know if that's a thing they can do now. When I was still active and the Xbox scene was in its prime, that was a thing people were rumored to be working on
I remember my OG Xbox,it redringed a few times but it felt like a muscle system,I had between 30-40 games, and that OG controller was enormous... but,it was fun.
The most interesting OG XBOX mod was definitely the HD/VGA mod. I don't know how far it's come since the old days (you used to have to run NTSC BIOS + HomeMade VGA cable) but a refresh of what HD technology is available would be interesting.
At this point if you aren't doing a CPU upgrade on your OG XBox, I'm not interested. Gotta get 1.6GHz Pentium III. And the new 256MB RAM mod. I can't wait until someone actually installs Windows on it.
I've never understood why the Xbox softmod process never got more love. That's really all you need, and it's free and completely tool-less. And once I found the one-stop-shop installer discs, was also so easy to do you could literally train a monkey to do it. Installing a full blown hardware mod chip is a great way to go, sure, but it was a costly and very fiddly solution back in the day. Yeah, for a softmod you needed to possess one of a few specific games, but it's not like they were at all hard to come by. Chances are you or somebody you know already had at least one of them. I got me a used copy of MechAssault at my local GameStop for like $15 and was in business. Quite literally. I softmodded like 50 OG Xboxes in my area for friends and family and anybody they knew with an Xbox. About the only thing you can't do with a softmod is drop in a bigger HDD. Not without some additional tinkering, at least. You need to mess with some real low level settings on the drive, but it can be done. I was rocking an 80 gig drive in my softmodded Xbox. Granted, it is a little risky. I did brick a 40 gig drive on my first attempt. But, that was just the cost of doing that sort of business back then. You can't make an omelette and all that jazz. Man, I used my softmodded Xbox for years. Even swapped the DVD drive out on it twice to keep it in service. In the days before "smart" TVs and GoogleTV et al set top boxes, a modded Xbox gave you all of that. It would not be at all an exaggeration to say that it was singularly the most useful piece of kit I have ever owned. Playing "backup" games was just the tip of a VERY large iceberg. My Xbox played far more NES/SNES/etc games than it ever saw of actual Xbox games. By far it's biggest workload was running XBMC, though. That was an absolute game changer. It changed my whole world, and I'm not being the least bit hyperbolic. Good times, man.
Man this brings back memories of making some serious coin chipping the original Xbox's! When ebay and Google Adwords would allow the selling/advertising of them that is. Lasted a couple of years before they clamped down.😀
its awesome that we can increase the ram of the original xbox now its crazy how good the modding community has gotten with this console upgrading the ram in a consumer base console is unheard of similar to wiimmfi the only game i ever see people play is mario kart wii so only seeing people play halo 2 all the time doesnt surprise me too much to be honest
Not sure about mvg, but even then I noticed what a royal pain in the ass it was to source 80 wire cables, let alone any long enough to function in an xbox. Doesnt help that the xbox is keyed upside down compared to every pc ever. So you pretty much NEED the maximum of 36 inches to reach everything feasibly. Thus, availability feels like it already dried up by 2013.
@@ZeroHourProductions407 I was always under the understanding that most sata drives/adapters required an 80 wire cable and that the 40 wire cable didn't work for sata adapters?
@ZeroHourProductions407 I had so much trouble finding 24 inch 80 wire cables, I ended up getting an 18 inch and flipping it around and it just barely fits (awkwardly)
@jamiewalker3906 I was under the same impression, at least I couldn't get a sata ssd to work consistently without going to an 80 (same ide to sata adapter in the video)
FRUGAL PRO-TIP: Disc trays struggling or refusing to open/close can often be resolved by simply popping the old rubber band into some boiling water for a couple of minutes. I didn't want to order a whole bag just to replace one band so I gave it a shot and was shocked at how well it worked. Drive opens and closes better than ever now! Got the idea from an @OddTinkering video.

However, many people don't have the know-how or the hardware available to build themselves one, so online retail services are the way to go. There are cheaper solutions if you search for them.
Would like to mention newer Aladdin's tend to not be able to flash new bios', but Cerbios can still work on it using its BFM installer.
@@DuneRunnerEnterprises My comment to you got deleted. Hope at least this one, won't. I did my own HDMI adapter. For someone living in the US, x-out is a good option, but for a cheaper solution, there are options if you care to look for them over the internet (i won't name any places, because I don't want my comment erased again).
@@kyle52905 I have the original chip, and for my purposes it's fine, I don't need to flash new bios. But good info nevertheless.
Impressive that it works without you changing to an 80 wire IDE cable? This is often a mandatory step when replacing the hard drive to a SATA hdd
From what I remember back in the day, the "80 wire" drives would still work with an old cable, just at a slower speed. Isn't that the case?
@Code7Unltd yes I know, that's why I called it 40 pin 80 wire. Obviously its not necessary for stock drives, but it basically is necessary for these startech sata adapters. Half the time it won't boot without an 80 wire cable, stock bios or otherwise
It's a system from 2001, so you have to say "pimp it out" as if you're still in 2001.
Add the pimpmyride.mp3 after he says it.

A very easy console to mod... nice big solder points, easy to open etc.
The version 1.6... not so much. But still easier than doing an RGH3 mod to a 360!

thank you for all your work putting these together for us!
Gotta say that I always appreciate your vids :)
Always interesting, and I can put on a playlist of your older stuff as great background news while working.
10:20 Note that when you use a Sata hdd, you also need to replace the 40 wire IDE cable with a 80 wire IDE cable.
There was a media streamer that you could use to stream cable and other tv channels to the Xbox. It was a hit and miss but it was indeed amazing. Most versatile console ever made.
TH-cam used to work on a PSP too, mental what homebrew devs can do.
Wouldn't it have been a good idea to apply fresh thermal paste & to replace the 40 wire IDE cable with an 80 wire?
Yeah kinda incomplete pimping. 80mm fan mod also highly recommended.
Fwiw I don't think the fresh paste gives a lot in most cases. I did it anyway on my old 1.6 I fixed up a couple years ago and the paste was gnarly looking but it wasn't in danger of not doing its job any time soon. Maybe others have had a different experience ofc

Decent upgrades, although I would have chosen an OpenXenium chip over the Stellar. I like your choice of dashboard, it’s what I use on my Xbox (which also has 128MB RAM and an LCD display). Lots more stuff coming for this console, you’ll need to do another video in the not too distant future to showcase it.
Feels like it has been years or decades since a real cool i mean COOL video game console was released

Yea. 7th gen was kind of the last generation when consoles weren't just underpowered pcs.
Ps3 and 360 were cool too.
Last great console was PS3, and x360 before that.
I loved this video: the best is that you did a hardware and a software pimp up. I hope to see more of the same kind
I did these mods on my original Xbox as well and I really love what the guys over at MakeMhz did with their HDMI mod. It's soo good! Feels great to load up some Halo 2 or other favorites and be able to enjoy them on a modern HDTV. 😀
What a coincidence. I just loaded some games on my og xbox to play yesterday, and today, MVG uploads a new video about og xbox
Dude, you posted this, and funnily, I just bought one this week and was considering it...would be my first mod.
I bought a modded OG Xbox years ago and love it. Still one of my favorite systems.
No one wanted them.
send me one
I just got one of the new Electron Shepperd's Xbox2HDMI v3, I like that they changed to a black adapter from the white.
Picked one of these up recently dirt cheap and surprised the clock didn't leak, opened it up, removed it and cleaned it, really cool looking system.
You can tell that you have such a soft spot for the original Xbox. I like the UnleashX dashboard with the Xvgm skin
I found a modded Xbox in a storage unit back in 2014 absolutely love it, it uses EvoX and I’ve never been able to connect to it, but I could rip games
aw man, this was the time for me. OG xbox will forever have a special place in my heart. what a brilliant console
What are the odds I picked up an original Xbox today. $30 bucks CAD. Was so excited to see you had this video out today in my featured videos!
Dude how do you post so fast? Wild. You work really hard. 🙌
The timing of this... I just randomly bought an OG Xbox 2 days ago lmao. Guess I know where to start now. Thanks!

I love the Microsoft Dreamcast 2.
you should do a video about pimping the 360 as well.
Just upgraded my HDD last month. What a timely video!

Definitely just use that star tech adapter. I've had a cheap adapter cook my HDD
Yes, your timing is impeccable as I just got one of these

You've inspired me to get mine out, hdmi out, mine is executer 3 modded (purple chip) and setup at home again... Cheers skip!
I should really stop hesitating to purchase the service from retro digital store.
You can get a complete cap replacement kit for the mainboard and PSU. Replacing the fan with a silent one is also a good idea. And if you're fancy you can get a IDE to SATA adapter and install an SSD.
Great video as always, love this stuff. Xbox is a fantastic machine, even stock back in the day I loved it.

Another year, another MVG video on modding the OG Xbox
Not really related to the video but you can tell MVG has lost a fair amount of weight since getting serious about it. Very cool and inspiring to see 👍
Man this brings back memories of making some serious coin chipping the original Xbox's!
Game software and game hardware preservation at its finest. Amazing work MVG.
Why did you use the 40 wire IDE cable rather than upgrading to 80 wire? Surely that would improve the access speeds?
Came here to say the same thing!
