You're so lucky having sandy soil: just moving the tractor would never work out here! You did good.
Looks like it does a pretty decent job of trenching just backing up, not perfect but decent.
Your also getting good at running it. Practice makes perfect!
I think you almost need some sort of wings or ears at the top of the trenching bucket to move the soil farther to the side so it doesn't collapse back in on itself.

Yeah, it's a tool and a great versatile machine, but you have to admit, it kinda is a grown man toy 😉 (I would absolutely love having one)
You live on the wrong soil to try to do that with that skinny bucket if you lived in Clay that would work fine but that Sandy gravelly mix is not going to work very well with the teaspoon removing bucket lol.
Nature of digging a smaller width trench with a “big shovel” easy for dirt to knock in. The bucket will be perfect for what you want it for, just might look a little funny from a distance big machine little bucket. As always JD great content, keep living the dream and doing good work.
J.D., why not just get a regular Trencher to do the trencher? Should be faster and more effective.
This was a tool I have that works well. Has Air conditioning and helped me build a skill :) also, trenchers do not work well in soft soft sand.
It looks to me the combo method is going to work for you. If you had heavy clay soils, like what is just up the road from you, you could probably have more success with using that bucket as a ripper.

Could you reduce the fallback by dampening the sand first?
I'm no expert on this at all...I ran a mini ex for 2.65 hours! It was a Bobcat...don't even remember the number (my landlord rented it), that being said I found more control of the cab rotation by grabbing the handle and using my wrist. The boom, arm and bucket I had my hand on top of the controls. Like I said I'm no expert at this! If I were going to use that bucket, I would "draw a line in the sand" first by backraking with that claw... then go back and clean it out. Just my 2 cents of "advise"... you have literally over 10x the seat time I had...3 years ago!
Chris from letsdig18 is a pretty cool dude. I've never met him, but I learned nearly everything from watching him work. Control grip really depends on what your doing, at least for me. If I'm on the edge my seat trying lean out and see the top of a tree, I'm gripping the top of the controls. If I'm just casually digging or moving material, I'll grip the top or sides. It just depends on my mood and how relaxed I am.
Double the width of this and it will be much more effective
I'd used my 12" bucket for that
im in ohio we have clay that thing clogs up i made them used them i use ripper with flat plate on the front that way clay bangs off .
I think it would be faster to use the 12" trenching bucket. Seems a waste of time. Trade that spoon in and get a ditching bucket. Then you have the 3 buckets that you need.

I think so too. I'm certainly more comfortable at the controls.
Think of this new bucket a wedge 4 " flat a way from cab and point to the cab and plate with hole to place shackle pull the pex tube into the ground
8 in wide and bucket deeper so hold more soil each time you scoop sand all way going collapse that why wide bucket ( may be rip plywood 20 in wide and 8 feet wide to stabilize side. ( there is machine for your type soil it have bucket your and have your welder a plate with a hole for shackle and tie rope and tie to Pex tube and pull tube in to the ground with mark wire
I would say this little tiny tooth bucket is going to waste an awful lot of time It's cute but that's all just grab your small little bucket that came with it and just dig a trench find out what your local code is for water lines and just dig it and make sure you when you're done that you put your flagging tape in too so when you forgot truly where it's at and you start digging another hole at least you find the flaking tape before you destroy the water line. Also holding on to the controls It's usually the fingers and the very pads of your your palm It's below your fingers is where most of us hang on to them a looser grip the better The old guy that showed me how to use the controls a long time ago told me she doesn't like to be manhandled caress me and I'll do what you want... yeah he was kind of a pervert but can't talk about the dead in a bad way correct. Happy digging. I'll give you one bit of advice I don't dig anymore I decided to do something a little less dirty but you can go absolutely nuts with designing and building buckets and that's great but before you know it you got 15 of them sitting around that you never use so you can see where that's going right.
I think when you first drug it through, you destroyed any integrity that the sandy side way of the trench would have had.
Your soil is in a most atrocious condition. Needs some natural compost with fibrous material. Also, sandy soil trenches do tend to collapse in.
That side of the property is for playing not growing :). Yet
Saves you having to go yo the beach!
