Walther P22: A picky eater? You gotta see this range video…maybe twice!!

  • One might venture to say that a .22LR in ANY format is the most enjoyable gun to shoot. Shooters guilt is made null, recoil is thrown out the window, and accuracy is automatic!
We really enjoyed this pistol and had a different experience than most reviewers on the market.
If you enjoyed today's video, please SMASH that thumbs up button and LIKE the video!! Thanks for watching

I have found my Walther to be completely reliable. Two issues my first time out but I chalked it up to breakin and me learning. All good now after a few hundred with flawless operation.

My Walther P22Q has proven accurate and reliable with Remington Thunderbolt, Remington Golden Bullet, CCI Mini-Mag and Aguilla Super Extra. I make a point of cleaning it after every trip to the range. Ballistol is the product I use for cleaning along with a boresnake.

the one i have broke the slide when using the 5 in barrel while shooting Remington Thunderbolt ammo. Walter replaced the slide free of charge. the long barrel is meant for use with "target" ammo not the high velocity stuff, for that the short barrel works fine. the original (broken) slide had been an original import by S&W, hence it had both logos on it.

I polished my p22's fed ramp/chamber edge and ridge on hammer with a dremel...Its made it more reliable...
I agree with GunWillTravel's ammunition post... CCI Velocitors are my go to self defense round...Mini mag and Aguila 40gr cprn are super reliable...
For me it's the ideal gun, the PPK's more reliable tactical cousin, 22lr, light/compact, accurate, with polished ramp its very reliable

The first generation Walther p22 is the one with all of the issues. It has a manual key safety on the right side, one slot on the accessory rail instead of three, a hard polymer grip with stippling, a recoil spring that separates into pieces, and a slide with less grooves for grip. Worst gun I’ve ever owned. Sold it and bought the 2nd generation p22 shown in this video. I can run any ammo, even sub sonic, without issue. Very good rework by Walther.

I had to do some work to mine to get it to run properly. Filed down the top of the hammer to reduce the friction that the slide gets when sliding to the rear, also flattened the safety bar to do the same thing. Then polished the snot out of both areas. Helped tremendously. The TX 22 is still more reliable, but I like the feel of the P22 more. TX shoots just as accurately and holds 16 rounds in a mag. Picky Eater.

I had a tx.22. it shot every thing but flat nose ammo like Winchester cowboy. They would always get stuck on the feed ramp. Loved the gun and was very quiet with a suppressor.
My biggest issue from the factory was the barrel issue they were known for. Mine was way off center and shot way right. After the barrel was replaced it was fixed. Still shot slight right but wasn't off poa 2 inches like it was.
The one issue that just absolutely bugged me about the gun itself are those crap rear sights. Never could perfectly zero it.
My PPKs .22 is a beast. Runs anything even Winchester ammo so far. shot about 100rd through it and only one failure. Stovepiped on one round of cheap Federal.
Hoping my p22 will shoot with no issues. It won't be used as a carry piece as of right now. Maybe after some hard testing. My walther though I am and using velocitor.
People hate on .22 carry guns but if you can put 10rd on target you'll bring at least one person down.

I've owned a Walther P22 since 2019 and initially I did have problems with Failure to Extract, and Failure to Feed....these are the improvements I did to mine and it significantly increased the reliability. I did switch to a captured guide rod assembly, I also polished the feed ramp, and I polished the face of the hammer. Lastly I think one of the major improvements I installed was the Lugus Mfg extractor. The Volquartsen extractor when they still made them, I initially used first and it sucked. The Lugus Mfg has a more pronounced claw. I don't know if they are still in business. Also based on my testing...Ammunition that has a minimum of 1200 fps has to be run through the Walther P22.

Thanks for the review! I believe you that CCI Stingers shot well, that's the reputation of this Walther P22. I'm also in CA so the P22 is the only game in town if I want a semi-auto 22lr pistol. Have you tried it with any bulk pack ammo like Remington Thunderbolts or Golden Bullets? My only 22lr gun right now is a S&W 617 which eats everything I throw at it.

Recently RE purchased a p22. I wish i kept my original. I didn’t put a ton of rounds through the new p22 but so far it’s ran 100% with thunderbolt (about a bricks worth) wasn’t sure if I was more impressed by the p22 or the ammo there.
I wish there were some aftermarket sight options for the p22 that is my only complaint with the pistol. It’s not that the pistol is inaccurate but it’s definitely not an easy mode pistol to master and shoot accurately compared to other .22s I know it isn’t designed for a target pistol but I think some sharper iron sight options would make it much easier to shoot accurately past 10-15 yards. Even the ruger sr22 which has very similar sights is easier to hit with at range and the only difference I can notice is the sights on the sr22 are a little tighter.

Just got one very slightly used yesterday. My issue is that mine will not manually cycle rounds. Feed a live round and try to eject it, it will not grab the round unless i press the ejector down while pulling the slide.
I hear that it should run fine when it shoots. This is just weird because any other pistol ive had manually cycles. Even my PPKs .22 I bought last week.
    Any thoughts?

    • @GSquaredTactical
      @GSquaredTactical  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

There’s several reasons that would happen. 1. The casing swells and there’s not enough “blow back” force to eject it. This could be from cheap ammo or reloads or from low velocity rounds. 2. There could be trash or a burr on the ejector behind the “hook” or lip whatever you want to call it. 3. The ejector spring maybe missing, the wrong one or just bad. Sounds like it’s probably the ejector or it’s spring. I would rule out a few things and send it back to Walther for repair or replacement. For example mine won't feed federal auto match at all but will run say cci mini mags flawlessly. That and keeping the chamber clean and this gun is ultra reliable.
