I choose the 22 as a defense weapon for several reasons. Low recoil means that I can empty the pistol very accurately while a person firing a large-caliber pistol may only get off a few shots accurately. As a nurse of 30 years I can tell you that anything that makes a hole in the human body is a potential killer and it is the placement of that hole that makes the difference and not the size or power behind it. Growing up in backwoods Arkansas I killed deer and large pigs with 22 rifles and pistols. I was on a Federal grand jury for a year and I can tell you that if you ever have to use your weapon to protect yourself and you have to go to court then you will have to defend your choice of firearm. The jury looks very differently upon a 41 magnum hollow point compared to a 22 caliber target pistol. The prosecution will point out that the large caliber pistol is designed primarily to kill a human being whereas a 22 pistol is not even considered a defensive weapon by many experts and is considered a toy or a small varmint gun by others.

My buddy is a PA State Trooper. He said there's people who think of the 22 as a toy when compared to larger calibers, so they do stupid things, which in turn ends up getting somebody shot, sometimes fatally. There is a great video on the P17 here on TH-cam that's about 27 minutes long, but worth watching. For EDC, you're just trying too break contact with the offender, and not necessarily kill them, but if they are persistent, blood loss, from multiple shots will weaken them. At close range, I can hit my target with my P17 and my TX-22 while maintaining target acquisition, with no muzzle flip, and consistent hits, in a much shorter time than with any other caliber. I would rather use a caliber, regardless of size, that I can accurately hit with, than have a monster round that I might miss with. Every bullet has a lawyer attached too it!

I'm a retired RN and I completely agree with your friend. I think people, especially kids get careless with a 22 thinking its a high powered BB gun. I've heard that several times. That said it's absolutely destructive to the human brain and there's usually always several "pathway injuries" where it's bounced around inside the skull. It's always disheartening to hear a call come in with a child with a .22 head shot. They usually die. 😭

@@angelaf5040 "The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a safety alert on BB guns, warning consumers that BB guns can kill because of their high muzzle velocity. According to the CPSC, BB guns cause about four deaths per year."
If this is true how much more so for a .22? Not many people are going to walk away from multiple shoots from a .22. And a high number won't walk away from just one! People who think .22s are BB guns are stupid in my opinion.
I wouldn't think twice about using a reliable .22 in a self defense situation. It's really just a matter of who gets shoot first.

I have one of the very first P22's that I bought around the same time I bought my G22. I absolutely love it! I have put so many rounds through it I finally had to get a aftermarket extractor. Super fun litte gun! Plus, if you are teaching someone to shoot a gun for the first time, it is perfect. Done it many times! Anyone that talks bad about this gun is a dummy! Nice video!

I love my P22Q! Have owned it for approx. 18 months and have fired it a whole bunch.
After a few cleanings and firing 500 rounds or so, the gun loosens up a bit and gets even better.
So I would say, a short break-in period is what you'll find is needed for this one.
Now the gun operates smoothly every time out, no more issues whatsoever.
It loves to eat Aguila HP, CCI Mini Mag and Federal Champion (all high velocity).
It's an absolutely fantastic purchase and I would recommend the P22 to anyone.
I bought it because the .22LR ammo is cheap and I like to shoot a lot.
I've heard many times that the older P22's had issues, I believe Walther has resolved them.
I also still read that people complain about them being ammo picky.
If you keep your gun clean and use high velocity rounds (1200 fps or higher) as Walther recommends,
you should have a fun time every time you go out to bang bang!

I get that a 22lr doesn't have the stopping power of higher calibers. I usually carry 9mm or 38spcl. However, I do have arthritis and there are times where the pain is excruciating. Therefore I'll carry my Walther P22 to ensure that at least I'm on target with first and following rounds. I figure something is better than nothing.

A .22LR pistol w high velocity, 1,000 fps +, hollow point ammo, will work for self defense despite some of the nay sayers. Especially if you unloaded a magazine on someone. They are going down. Also, .22LR is way cheaper than 9mm ammo for range days. Recommend CCI .22LR ammo such as: CCI Mini Mag, Stinger, and Velocitor. If you are interested in the Walther P22, check out the German Sport Guns (GSG) 922. It is a full sized, Colt 1911 compact type design. I own one and it shoots great w high velocity ammo. Rarely a jam. Retails for about $350-$400. Also, GSG is part of Sig Sauer and are made in the same factory as the Sigs. Give it a shot! (see what I did there? heh!)

Great video. I’m looking at a P22 for lower cost range time and more frequent practice. The 22lr doesn’t have the stopping power, but multiple well placed shots are deadly. I use 9mm for my EDC CCW, but I’d rather have a 22 than nothing.

Thanks for your review of the Walther P22. I have the Walther P22Q and it has served me well.
Regarding lethality with a 22 firearm. When I was in the 6th grade a classmate of mine climbed from the front to the back seat of his family vehicle. While doing so he contacted a 22 rifle in the back seat. It discharged, killing him instantly. That said, the 22 LR wouldn't be my first choice for EDC but in an emergency I could make do.

These walthers are very lethal. I have around 20 of these different walther semi automatic pistols and a few Rugers, but they are awesome, accurate and very light with no hard kicks. Low recoil, super easy to disassemble and clean. I recommend to everyone especially to new gun owners. The best part is the price, super affordable. I mean there are dozens of law enforcement agencies that actually use these as there everyday service weapons, so to answer those who wonders if all police agencies carry glocks, no they don’t.

Nice video. I've been looking around at plainkers lately. A .22 LR round obviously can be deadly with a well placed shot, and I've heard and read about cases where the .22 round entered bodies at non-lethal locations but ricochet'd and hit vital organs that ended up fatal.

Most of the Pistols that I have owned and carried were
    .22 and. 25 cal .
Benefits are Cheap ammo and Concealability.
    You can easily find
.22 Pistols that are much smaller than that Walther. I used to be a big fan of Beretta, but I lost my taste for Hammer Fired Pistols. Shot Placement is Most important. My biggest concern with. 22s is that they are Rimfire and
you are gonna get some Clicks instead of Bangs.
All in all, I still love
    .22s .

Should be noted that proper ammo usually always goes bang. I had the walther p22 5inch pistol and it went bang every time with Aquila, cci and punch ammo.
Cci quiets didn't cycle properly but they fired fine.
I also have a walther hammerli tac r1 that shoots every time if I clean it. I went about 800 rounds over the course of a year and it stopped firing because it was so loaded up with carbon it didn't work properly, cleaned it that evening took it back out and cycles properly and without issue.
I'm here to defend 22lr and I am willing to stake my position on the assertion that 22lr with properly fitted ammo to the weapon has no more issues than other types of ammuniton.

22lr is a pistol that you empty the entire mag in the center of mass and quickly get out of harms way. Its not a caliber that will necessarily stop an attack, just provide enough time for you to get out the hell out of there.

  • @benw4361
    @benw4361 ปีที่แล้ว +2

22lrs are way less deadly than higher caliber but it's the tradeoff.
I think in a close quarter situation where you only get 1 shot before the perp is able to grab you and wrestle you down, 22lr won't be enough unless you land a lucky shot.
Perp might still succumb to his wounds but still enough time to take you out before.
Compared to being hit with 9mm, 38sp, or 357, I think the comparison would be 22lr is like getting hit in the face with a brick which will hurt like hell but probably wouldnt kill you, while 38sp would be like having a truck hit you at 80 mph. The 2 are dramatically different in power and thus outcome. The chances of surviving 1 is much higher than the other although both are still deadly.

From derringers to semi-autos to 12G shotguns, I've owned and fired virtually every size and caliber firearm that you can think of. My choice for a personal defense weapon is the Walther p22. I can retrieve it and empty the ten-shot clip in five seconds or less. I keep that clip loaded with CCI Stingers; a round deadlier than many larger rounds. With respect to keeping the firearm clean and using only good quality ammunition - everything one should do with all firearms, one MUST do with any .22, due to the higher potential for jamming of rimfire rounds.

I'm wondering: what's more effective in short barrel pistols and revolvers, Federal Punch in 22LR or .22 caliber WMR (longer 22 magnum casing that won't fit or fire in standard .22LR's). Out of a long barrel esp. a rifle it's clear the WMR has more foot-lbs of power and higher velocity. However, I believe WMR is designed for long, slow powder burn so it won''t exceed barrel pressure limits, while the .22LR Punch is designed to burn fast to actually transfer full power in a 1.87"-2.6" short barrel pistol or revolver. It's a real world question because my local gun shop has an 8 shot Ruger LCR in WMR on the shelf. I think Federal Punch is a real game changer in the 22 world because it can match 22 WMR in a short barrel setting, but without all the muzzle flash. Has anybody here compared these apples and oranges? As much as I want the 22 WMR Ruger LCR 1.87" I think Punch will work just as well and if I get the .22LR version of this short barrel pistol, it will shoot everything in the 22 LR ammo list including subsonic.

The OEM guide rod & recoil spring is a garbage design that seems to make the P22 finnicky about choice of ammo, grip & lube. I've shot P22s where I couldn't get through a mag without multiple stoppages. I replaced the OEM spring & guide rod with the TandemKross captured guide rod & spring (a $20 drop in part) and that made the P22 the pistol I thought I was getting. Not only is it much easier to disassemble & reassemble, it virtually eliminated all the failures to feed I was experiencing. The TandemKross turned my disappointment with the P22 into pure joy when firing.

I have a Ruger LCP II in 22lr and a Walther P22. I have no problem with a 22 pistol for CCW . If you watch the security camera footage of armed incidents, it is almost always the case that as soon as the thug sees or hears your gun, they are beating feet out of there! That being said, I do carry a Ruger LCP II in 380 with Liberty ammo, as 22lr guns are not 100% reliable function wise. But I would be fine with 22lr if that was the gun I was best with.

I'm a retired RN/BSN. I can promise you in my experience working trauma, yes more people have worse injuries with a.22. When people are shot in the head with a 22 it bounces off the inside of the skull bones and leaves pathways through the brain. 9mm will either be a through and through injury or it will stop in the body. 22's move around inside the human body destroying blood vessels and tissue. From what I have seen I'd much rather get hit with a 9mm.

More people are killed with the 22LR round than any other round because many don't take safety into account as the 22 cal is so small thinking it's not deadly and wind up becoming a statistic.
Unfortunately, most deaths caused by the 22LR round are accidental

The reason 22s are the highest in fatality is because they're the cheapest so they make up the majority of what people own. It's got nothing to do with stopping power and everything to do with economics.
More people aren't dying to 357 magnum because it's too expensive compared to 22lr

I wouldn't have one for my everyday carry. They are unreliable, I think a lot of 22s are that way because I have my share of them. I have one of the walther 22lrs and it has jammed and the spent casings won't come out of the barrel to eject. Probable going to have to send it back for some maintenance.

Picture in your mind a rapier stab..
Now look at a 22 bullet hole....
    That simple.
Knights did not kill eachother with their greatswords, they got in close with them but in the end you use a little ice pick dagger for the kill. Not a slicing weapon, not a big giant sword.

Other neighbors shoot larger caliber and I've noticed they've gotten visits by the police, as it's not legal within our town limits. They're also not the most respectful people, shooting in middle of the night, etc. It's a great little pistol, a lot of fun and good price 👍🏼

Compensate quality with quantity. If you must use a 22 for self defense, do the math. One target, 10:1. Two targets, 5:1. Three targets, 3:1. That clip has 10 rounds for a reason. Use them. Use them all.

I bought a Walther P22 that firearm is an absolute piece of crap. Fails to fire a lot. Fails to feed quite often. And fails to eject a common occurrence. I sent it back to factory and they said it's okay. However it still does the same crap. Not using cheap ammo. Takes over 30 minutes just to get through a box of 50. I'd use it for a paperweight but its not even worthy for that. Don't bother getting one.
