Even a small scene like this one, is so powerful, so intense. You can see that Palpatine cannot wait for Anakin to become his apprentice, yet he moves in his plans with an almost otherwordly grace.
What's crazy is that they genuinely seem like friends even though he's evil and of course wants to use him e still seems so damn sincere, then after his mutilation its like he treats him as if he's a totally different person like nothing that came before even mattered, very crazy interesting stuff.
This was a great scene because it makes it obvious that Palpatine has been grooming Anakin for the past 10 years, puffing up his ego, befriending him, and getting in his head. This is a perfect example of "show, don't tell". We're shown what's been going on and it's obvious to assume these kind of private conversations have been going on for the better part of a decade.
0:22 This was such an important scene for Anakin’s character’s development. Palpatine was already planting seeds of doubt into Anakin regarding the Jedi, three years prior to him becoming his apprentice. Palpatine simply knew the time was not right yet.
@@LegendaryCaptain yep, the moment Palpatine found out about Anakin, he knew how powerful he’d be, and what’s worse is that the Jedi allowed this to happen.
All Anakin needed was a father figure. The Jedi that wanted to be his father figure died at the hands of Darth Maul in a battle for Anakin's fate. Nobody on the Council wanted to do it. TOTCD for 22 yes. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that Yoda, Obi Wan, and even Count Dooku (jedi) could still take him even in his prime lol. He was ON THE WAY to truly being the most powerful but wasn’t there yet.
the musical note that plays as palpatine says “you will learn to trust your feelings” is beautiful. scary, foreshadowing, and gut wrenching, but beautiful. this scene is often overlooked but shows how deeply anakin was manipulated by palpatine, who took advantage of him the day he was no longer a slave on tatooine
I love the absolute subtleties throughout the prequels. It would be interesting how many people who never watched the original trilogy would be able to put the pieces of the puzzle together of the underlying plot in the prequels and make the connections.
I've been watching Star Wars with a friend in the machete order (4, 5, 1, 2, 3, 6) so she doesn't know who the emperor is, and she keeps saying the chancellor is "so suspicious" XD
@@Kohay114 My mother, who is not a major Star Wars fan, wondered aloud to me about Palpatine being evil during Episode 2 when he was subtly tempting Anakin about becoming more powerful than Yoda.
It's obvious to all the kids who watched from 1-6. I was born in 2000, so I'm one of them, and whioe I did not know the word grooming, I could still feel what was happening. Anakin is the chararcter that I empathized with the most. Probably because he was a kid, just like I was. Alot of people like to accuse George lucas of not having any idea of what he was doing, I've always said this scene proves he did at least to some extent. This one scene shows Palptine is already in Anakin's head messing with it it's why he's the way he is for alot of the movie. Also in my opinion Hayden does a pretty good job in this movie Attack of the clones isn't perfect but I have always felt it was a step up from Phantom menace which I think is a good movie too but focused way too much on the wrong things and it really does hold it back sometimes not enough to make it unwatachable but it is easily the weakest star wars movie at least in my opinion.
I find it valid and there are things that I can’t even out into words that it feels like there are gaps to be filled like Anakin bonding with other Jedi before him and with him. Heck, just have Barriss Offee bond with Anakin as the books have done.
I can see a prequel hater watching this scene and thinking Hayden's acting is wooden. But the scene is actually so well done and you can tell Hayden knew what he was doing...Hayden is talking like James Earl Jones. This scene is reminiscent of a Vader and Palpatine interaction in the OT.
Actually the writing here is quite deep. It shows how Anakin's thoughts and actions are already being molded and shaped by Palpatine. Earlier during the speeder chase, ObiWan says that if Anakin practiced more he could rival Master Yoda as a swordsman. Then Anakin says he thought he already did. In this scene you realize Palps was planting those ideas in his head.
