@MuhoZen To really sit "good for nothing" zazen, using any kind of technique (even being aware, letting go of thoughts etc) doesn't serve the purpose. If we just sit there and let the mind run its course (get caught up in thoughts and come back when it wants to) and don't control the mind in any way (except that we don't intentionally think e.g., plan something etc) do you think that qualifies as zazen? Would you recommend it?

Nothing qualifies as zazen. Zazen means complete failure.

@@MuhoZen Thanks for your reply. As a practice then which one of these would you recommend 1) being aware of what is happening in 6 sense fields with an attitude of letting every experience be as it is 2) Just sit there and don't even put effort to be aware or letting be

      1) sounds like over-doing it ("being aware of...") while 2) sounds lazy ("just sit there..."). So the answer is, naturally, neither. Sit between a rock and hard place. Don't DO zazen, but don't NOT DO it either. Thank Buddha, there are no customer instructions for Zen practice ;)

@@MuhoZen Thanks Muho. Seems like you are pointing to alertly & equanimously sitting there and letting go of any intention to control my sitting and letting zazen do zazen. My main problem with this is "mind wandering". My mind starts wandering after just 30 seconds almost every time. Do I simply not worry about this aspect? Or should there be some intention to wake up from distraction?

In the beginning, just staying with the breath in the beginning and returning to the breath whenever you realize that you drifted off might ne a good idea.
