So I followed your invitation to test. Not going to do it with all lenses, but what I already had to hand X-t5 and 23 1.4 LM, which allows close focussing so I can go quite far to near. Key settings you didn't mention, or I missed. I tested with both AF mode wide/tracking and also area, box in centre only. AF-C settings: tracking at 1, AF speed at -2 for smoother transitions. Face detect on with auto eye select. First test with me moving with camera, AF mode Area keeping the box in the middle, moving around the room shifting from items from far to near, and everything in between. It behaves as I would expect. Moving the AF speed to 5 makes a difference but would be too abrupt for my usual purposes. AF locks on at a consistent speed. One criticism is that even at the slow AF speed, the final lock on is quick, so it smoothly transitions until the very last part which fast. Some might say jerky, but it's really only that last focus snap. If you move nice and smoothly to not make the viewer feel sick like I do, the focus moves and adjusts smoothly. Move to quick and you need to pause a second while focus catches up. Going from near to far, definitely more of a jerk than I'd like. Why I prefer slow pans. But AF does lock and is accurate. Second test, camera mounted on a tripod with me moving from far to near and near to far. Roughly 5m to the minimum focus distance. Appearing and disappearing suddenly into the middle of frame thanks to a door frame tested also. This time with AF wide/tracking and face detect. Same AF-C settings as before, so rather slower than fast to ensure smoother transitions. I found it tracked my face very well all the way up to minimum focus distance. With me suddenly appearing from behind a door, head first no body I was actually positively surprised. No I wasn't leaping around like a demented kangaroo on LSD, but just normal movements - if moving back and forward and jumping out of doorways can be considered normal. I guess this is why I'm happily using this as a webcam day in day out wide open (wider lens, though). For video when I'm behind the camera I usually use touch to track, and would use different AF-C tracking settings depending on the situation. Obviously hard to test on myself. Any improvements welcome but on the X-t5 I am getting nothing anywhere close to what you demonstrate. I would be claiming a defective unit if I had results like you are showing. I'm no pro but if a friend asked me to video their wedding tomorrow, I wouldn't be having any cold sweats about missing the aisle walk with the X-t5.
@@trym2121You're in luck because I don't actually shoot video like a normal person, I try force to AF failure for content by doing these ridiculous exercises. Kidding aside, no I didn't at the time but I just did. Just completed the test with the same lens both using tracking and area and each time with tracking set to max and minimum to see if we are being manipulated. Lens wide open as before. I completed the test twice, with the hand near my face and at full arms length in front of my face to create large depth of field and throw my face deeply out of focus. So 8 different shooting possibilities. I could not once get the AF box to stick to my hand and pull it aside. Once it followed my hand to about my ear at which point my eye became exposed and it went back to the eye. Once my eyes became exposed with the hand closer to the face (deeper depth of field test) it snapped pretty quick straight to my eyes and again stayed locked as I reintroduced my hand until it covered them. At which point mostly the face/eye boxes turned off, until the eyes were revealed again. But even when not it went straight back to the eyes. With the shallow depth of field test, similar story. Even though the face was just a blur. However, it unsurprisingly wasn't so snappy, it did take a couple of seconds to find the face and focussing in in 3 short phases. So jerky, but I did this all at the minimum focus distance, I was completely blurred out. There was no clue for the camera a person was there really, once it found the face, though the eyes snapped. I didn't try it with crossed eyes, an eye patch, shades or clown make up I'm afraid. It's already a moronic enough test as it is! Conclusion, I still have no idea how he is making it do this. And let's not forget it's edited. I tried maybe 20 different passes, if he tried 150 and took the one bad one... I can't say it will never happen in 1/150 attempts. And remember I have the x-T5. But this video is posted as if it happens with all Fuji bodies. I can't even force it to this choosing the worst settings I can think of. Maybe someone with another Fuji body can try too.
What firmware did tou test on? xt5 version 2.10 and below are all fine. It was the new ones that messed up the AF. I have testes 23mm f2, 35mm f2, 50mm f2. The AF-c in video mode with are gives a pulsing effect on all the mentioned lenses wth the firmware V4. I downgraded all my xt5 cameras firmware. I have been doing videos since the fujfilm xt3 came out. I have tested all the settings
@@birjub9647 camera FW 4.0, lens not sure. I guess by pulsing you mean the focus like it's checking focus on more still subjects, and not exposure because you are using auto ISO? Not something I noticed at all. I've seen it before with the x-t2 and 3 when I also only had lenses with stepper motors, but I only have lenses with linear motors now which are more suitable for video. Didn't see it in this video of Edvard either. Not saying it wouldn't happen with this lens, but I didn't notice anything when doing these tests, nor when using as a web cam - although I'm less focussed on me then. My man, you have got yourself a follow. Amazing video, and positively hilarious lol. Btw, I was deciding between XS20 and A6700 and I got the A6700 because of honest reviews like yours.
I’m about to sell my XT5 and buy a Sony A6700. I made the horrible mistake of trying the Sony on a short portrait shoot yesterday. Zero misses. Zero. Beautiful shots. Great little camera. Fuji, get with it.
exactly, that what i have been saying since april. Only time I see consistent af tracking is in face detection on firmware 1. But on the newest firmwares seems like PDAF is missing. They messed up something big time
I still think the first test should you just be standing there. Perfectly still. Keep the camera on a tripod and set up the interval timer shooting with AFC and face detect. There was no people in the background, just my family in the frame. Wasn't even using wide open. I got like 50% of photos out of focus. I've been with Fuji since 2015, so I'm used to deleting lots of photos, but it's annoying to have to rely on single point AF to take decent photos. Should have kept my old X-T10 if I wanted to take photos like that.

Excellent. For the stills test, you could give the camera a chance by using focus priority instead of release priority. It may never take a picture though...
@@edvard2942 Same. At concerts (I'm on stage with the band and constantly moving myself) I sometimes have to wait seconds for the camera to take a shot with focus priority. Whoever recommends this setting has no experience shooting action scenes. To you fanboys: birds are not action
Fuji experts often take random shots on Sundays. They have no idea what is going on when it comes to shooting an action for clients for whom you promised to deliver real results. You cannot afford to go for Sunday walks just to show off your new Fujifilm camera. You lose money by using a malfunctioning camera.
@@INFOXlive I was so angry when my A7iv delivered less than 70% sharp sports shots when shooting as an amateur, I can't figure how pros can use Fuji at this stage.
It does not matter what brand the camera is. If it is broken, it is bad. Any high-end camera can produce poor results if used incorrectly. You cannot expect a camera to function in the dark unless it is a night vision camera. However, if the camera fails to deliver results despite being used with the correct settings for the conditions, it is most likely faulty. However, if your Sony camera was not faulty, a 70% hit rate appears strange. I have used Sony a6000 and a6400 cameras in challenging conditions and have never received the poor results you describe. Either the camera or the cameraman was defective.
Love this channel! It's my discovery of 2024. Could you guys please help me with suggestions for making a smooth transition? I currently have an X-T3 and X-S20 with six dedicated X-mount lenses, flashes, cages, small screw-in filters, etc. Both cameras have not only struggled with autofocus, but lately, both(!) have been shutting off after several minutes at room temperature (around 20-23°C) while recording in 4K 30fps (I never use higher frame rates for longer videos). I've also been experiencing frequent card writing errors across various brands (SanDisk, Lexar, Kingston, Sony Tough M), with cards ranging from 64GB to 256GB. Also X-S20 doesn't have record time limits but has HUGE overheating issues. X-T3 is better with that. Just short breaks every 30 min. In terms of reliability X-T3 is a bit more trustworthy. Any suggestions for a reliable hybrid system (60% video, 40% photo)? I'm mostly considering: 1. Lumix S5II/S5IIX - likely the best video camera at this price point, with excellent stabilization. However, many TH-camrs say it's a niche camera, making it hard to resell. Also, while the autofocus isn't as good as Sony's, some people say it's better than Nikon's. 2. Sony A7C II or saving a bit more for the Sony ZV-E1 (but is it good for photos?). 3. Something from Nikon. 4. Canon EOS R6 Mark II (or something similar from Canon; the R5C would be perfect but it's out of reach). 5. I'm even considering the Blackmagic 6K, but it lacks autofocus, though the image quality is superior. Also it's only video camera so for stills probably I'll stay with X-T3
@@noyo1444 Let me tell you a secret you probably don't know. There are still film cameras you can buy. Yes, cameras still work with manual focus. You can still use the camera without eye detection as well as without AF in general. You can still paint, how did people do it before photography? And then there's a function called AF. If it works it's usable. If it doesn't, it's not. It has nothing to do with what and how you take the pictures, you pay for it there to work. Spoiler alert, it doesn't.
Try swiping your face. Does it lose the tracking box like the intro?
@@brownbear100 But imagine what: when you hide your face, face detect stops working. Crazy isn’t it? Terrible, terrible AF! (Sarcasm off)
@@trym2121You're in luck because I don't actually shoot video like a normal person, I try force to AF failure for content by doing these ridiculous exercises.
If you've got a lens with linear motors try with that and see if have it.
Hilarious episode! Enjoyed it very much! 😅 Fuji engineers must have nightmares after watching this. 😂
Grabbing Fujifilm's continues autofocus point is my new favorite magic trick I like to show to our monthly "beers and camera" meet-up 😂
"Those airpods in my hand are not in this universe, are undetectable" 😂 I'm dying
00:03 that smile... that damned, smooth, out of focus smile!
One of the best intros on TH-cam hahaha :D Thanks for your information about this topic! I hope Fuji will finally take this issue serious enough to get it where it should be in 2024.
I have not seen any company whose communication department with its customers is so weak and insulting.
They don't answer emails, they don't give an answer on social media, and they don't give an official statement.
nothing
Only after two years and for fear of losing the market two weeks ago, they officially said that we will give another update and they don't blame themselves for how much they messed up and how many users in professional work, from photographers to videographers, have problems and losses.
It's really ridiculous
I don't even have hope for a new update...
My man, you have got yourself a follow. Amazing video, and positively hilarious lol. Btw, I was deciding between XS20 and A6700 and I got the A6700 because of honest reviews like yours.
This song is a masterpiece
Hahahah another 10/10 video 😂 I was laughing so hard watching this country song about Fujifilm AF 🤣🤣
You've inspired me to do an autofocus test when the new firmware comes out
I’m about to sell my XT5 and buy a Sony A6700. I made the horrible mistake of trying the Sony on a short portrait shoot yesterday. Zero misses. Zero. Beautiful shots. Great little camera. Fuji, get with it.
you made me rethink my decision of ordering a new xm5
Top notch video again.
Not fair. You perfected the John Cena genjutsu and Fuji couldn't see you.
Why can't i get over with this song man masterpiece acting
Theory would have it that if Fujifilm focus is happening in steps the phase detection is not used at all.
exactly, that what i have been saying since april. Only time I see consistent af tracking is in face detection on firmware 1. But on the newest firmwares seems like PDAF is missing. They messed up something big time
@@edvard2942 It behaves exactly like the old Panasonic DFD system so I am sure they rely on contrast detect mostly.
@@MrRafalEn Yes
I still think the first test should you just be standing there. Perfectly still.
Keep the camera on a tripod and set up the interval timer shooting with AFC and face detect. There was no people in the background, just my family in the frame. Wasn't even using wide open.
I got like 50% of photos out of focus.
I've been with Fuji since 2015, so I'm used to deleting lots of photos, but it's annoying to have to rely on single point AF to take decent photos. Should have kept my old X-T10 if I wanted to take photos like that.
This song has better AI than Fuji! Haha
You are correct to rost fujfilm.. XH2s is a flaghip camera from fujifilm, most expensive apsc camera to be offered. On specs its amazing everything is good but the firmware which they made is the worst!
great that you recorded such videos as this, I don't trust fuji when they release software 7.0 - what they are doing is a joke. I have a whole system for FujiX and I have to change it because I make videos
Fujifilm manupulate their used camera market. No other manufacturer does this. We already know their "demand" is artificial (purposefully release too few models). We also know that they use dodgy third party hackers to harass people listing the latest fuji gear on ebay for lower prices!
I sometimes start this video to laugh. Incredible moments, incredible work my man :D
My Fujifilm XT3 has way better autofocus. I really like their cameras I just hope they fix these big issues.
You mind letting us know what firmware you're on? I'm about to roll back a bunch of my bodies
@@haloboy456the latest is fine. They don't touch the AF algorithm anymore (a.k.a they're lazy AF). Any AF related firmware beyond the firmware 1 in xh2s is just downgrade in AF performance
@@haloboy456 It's firmware 5.11
@@amitmanner Thanks a lot. I'm going to check with my xt3 is running now and if it's that or older I'm not touching anything, The F was never perfect but I remember updating it a few times and maintaining the not as good as I'd like it to be feeling. But there were moments and stretches where it was actually working just fine. So now we all out here firmware hunting. The industry just needs to slow it the hell down and expand firmware sizes. Just a little bit accepting that you going to need a little bit of more processor grunt to keep fast boot times for these professional workflows. The semiconductor cornering of the market that Sony has too doesn't help much
OK OK!
I've had my sights set on buying an a6700 since your first video, why do I keep watching you? And yes, how do I sell my old fuji now, you've ruined the whole second hand camera market :)
Fujifilm ruined it bro , not me
As a Fuji fan your video is useful and appreciate your efforts!! I hope Fuji watches this video!
And I even thought people will start throwing Fujifilm cameras to the trash instead of selling them, to send the message
Excellent. For the stills test, you could give the camera a chance by using focus priority instead of release priority. It may never take a picture though...
I experienced that
@@edvard2942 Same.
BBWWWWAAAAAAAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! That intro alone made my ribs hurt!!! :)))
I was waiting for a comment like this , thanks 🤣
I'm mostly considering:
I hope Fujifilm doesn't fix the autofocus so that Edvard doesn't stop making those sarcastic videos.
Man that first clip, absolute love the laughter. 😂 Reminds me why I sold H2 and H2s. UNUSABLE.
Unsuable…..how did you take pictures before eye detection?😂😂😂
@@noyo1444 Let me tell you a secret you probably don't know. There are still film cameras you can buy. Yes, cameras still work with manual focus. You can still use the camera without eye detection as well as without AF in general. You can still paint, how did people do it before photography?
And then there's a function called AF. If it works it's usable. If it doesn't, it's not. It has nothing to do with what and how you take the pictures, you pay for it there to work. Spoiler alert, it doesn't. I know you just tried to make yourself look interesting but you could at least think for a second before actually sending the comment lol.

you need to call out the fujirumors admin patrick, he is the reason fujfiilm is so behind he keeps making excuses for them
his latest post on the comments he says your video is wrong lol
Patrick is deep in fanboy delusion. Someone needs to give him panasonic with real time LUT so Fuji has no more advantage, later introduce him with addicting AF from CaNiSony
Such fanboys are actually detrimental to business. They cause harm in the long run. Instead of properly addressing the issue, they are going insane in defense mode, making the product appear even worse than it is.
awesome video , keep going until they fix. Thanks
Stills taken with burst mode, with priority to Release or Focus makes little difference, in my experience with an X-T3 if the subject is moving towards or away from the camera Fuji AF-C can't cope.
My ancient Nikon D700 works far better in this regard.
For a moment, I thought the background was also a challenging one with such high contrast. And then you filled the frame with your face. And waited…lol. I do wonder if it would have the same troubles with a less busy background.
Probably not , because the camera would hunt like crazy if doesnt see enough contrast.
What do you think of the autofocus on the Sony A6100? And in 2024, is it still good value for money, or would you recommend something else?
Any sony after 2014 has good af. And 6100 its very good.
