I switched TO fujifilm and haven’t regretted it yet.
I became a Fuji X-T3 owner about 2 1/2 years ago. The main reason was that I was able to buy a barely used body that came with the 18-55, a handgrip, extra batteries (OEM and 3rd party) and an extra charger. Plus, everything was still in the box all wrapped up like it just came off of the shelf. And, I got all of this for far less than the price of just a body for most of the competitors. But, that was at a time when new stuff was out, it was around the holidays and everyone was getting rid of their stuff to upgrade. This happened again in fall 2022. I was able to get two lenses I normally couldn't afford and great prices and in new condition. Both were less that a year old, one less than six months old still under warranty. Those were the XF56(v 1.0) and the XF90. I am quite happy with my equipment right now. As an amateur, the X-T3 is more than enough camera for me. And, the cost so far has been quite reasonable compared to alternatives, especially the FF alternatives. I would still love one more lens, a zoom with more reach for shooting sports. But, those are not very budget friendly! So, I will wait and see. I'm a very patient shopper. LOL! Have a great week.
I'm a Fuji fanboy and I can't really dispute any of your points. But, it may be important to note that none of them really deter in any significant way my using a Fujifilm camera or lens to take good photos. Now as for as something that is missing that keeps me from taking good photos, that would be easy for me. It's missing from Fujifilm and also from Nikon, Sony and Canon. This would be a good way to manual focus. I was using SLR cameras in 1965, they were easy to manual focus. In fact when autofocus came out I didn't want it. "Why would anyone be so lazy to want the camera to focus for you?" was my thought. I want better manual focusing tools and I will never use any of the video features.

Do you think that new Eye autofocus by nikon that let's you manual focus into the eyes count as a manual focusing tools that's worth getting?
Unless I'm missing something eye autofocus isn't that new, I believe Canon introcuced it in '98, 25 years ago, now all the majors have it. That isn't really what I was talking about in terms of manual focusing tools. I meant things that help you lock in focus when you have turned off autofocus and are focusing manually.But, you are right, eye focus is a great tool to lock in focus right where you need it for portraits.@@bostonrolfwithjoelgheiler3348
I never really realized how far better the Fuji colors are until purchased a Sony A7C just recently. The turned off the Sony jpg files in favor of RAW only. But the Fuji jpg recipes rock. I own 4 small Fujifilm cameras which I shoot on a daily basis for years.
Are you happy with the A7C? I'm looking into getting a full frame camera but I know Sony colours are controversial for photography.
@@1992AJL I was having a hard time deciding wether or not I should get me the A7c. The main reason why I bought it was that I wanted to have a FF camera in favour of testing my 100+ vintage manual lenses to full potential. An other reason is that I wanted a camera w. a spot on auto focus that would let me shoot models in a rather fast manner. Manual lenses just take to much time especialy when a model is creative and moving a lot. I also bought a Sony 85mm 1,8 for this reason. But that's basically it. other than that the menue is awefully packed although w. impressive features that I usually never use. I don't even shoot video. Maybe some day. The camera is not as nice to look at as the Fuji cameras or my dig. Pen F for instance. I love retro design and beautiful things in general. This camera is more like a tool for a job that requires fast action. I'm using my Fuji rangefinder style cameras most of the time. Well almost exclusively. However the A7C is a great camera and the infamous lille EVF is better than I expected, or better say I've got used to it in a short time. Oh, and the colors, Hmm, not as nice as w. the recipes Fuji color science comes with. It feels like it's in the cell phone department where they try to be as realistically accurate. Nothing really to write home about imo
@@TheoDahlemPickups Thanks for the response, everything you've mentioned mirrors my thoughts exactly! If only Fuji released a full frame option so we could adapt vintage lenses without crop. They could absolutely squeeze a FF sensor into an X-pro body for example, I refuse to believe that wouldn't sell well in the 'crowded full frame market'.
@@1992AJL Absolutely. I'd even go one step further and suggest them a FF rangefinder style camera without video. Plus 100+ custom profiles so we would be able to conveniently set up and name lenses. Without the video option that would make it a reasonably priced FF for photographers. My dream.
I'm a Fuji newbie since August. Decided to buy a brand new X-T5 as for me is the best value per cost across all the top models. I honestly can't live without the film simulations now, they are a game changer for me.
I still have my Canon cameras and for full frame I will stick with Canon. I do wish that the used market for Fuji cameras would lower the price of the older cameras, sad that many people have over-hyped them and Fuji is not helping this.
I have shot Fujifilm for years and love them. In my opinion, my GFX 50R with the Fuji GFX 45mm lens is amazing and will blow away anything Sony or Canon has to offer. The Fujifilm cameras also give that wonderful, tactile, intuitive old-school shooting experience with dials rather than ploughing through menus.
I won't let the X-H2S slander go against the A7IV. You could take a quarter of the readout speed from that sensor and the rolling shutter will still be exponentially better than the filth that is the A7IV sensor's. I need to go watch the other video now to chill out.
The A7IV is the best camera I have ever used.
Every lens, camera and photographers have their own limitations. Once we learn what they are and find a good balance only then can we become a better photographer.
what lens did you use on those beautful environmental shots towards the end of the video?
Fuji decisions have really puzzled me, like deciding to just stop even trying to produce the cameras people wanted all together rather than at least have some production going. Yeah, there was a shortage that everyone had to deal with, but they can’t be blind to the fact the used market has exploded and their decision to go in an entirely different direction 🤔
Meanwhile you have a new Nikon FF retro out for the same price or cheaper than a used x100v 😂
The ZF with an adapter for vintage lenses will be far closer to the actual results/experience of shooting film than anything Fuji has put out so far. If the X-Pro4 doesn't come out with IBIS, and manual focus f/1.4 primes the size of a fujicron, I think it's a no-brainer to buy a ZF over Fuji.

@@professionalpotato4764 yep, IBIS is a necessity in future Fuji cameras if they want to compete, I think.
I'd say the sharpness isn't just down to the quality of their lenses but the size of the sensor. There was a short period where I had m43, APSC and FF under my roof. Testing showed that with similar lenses on them at low ISO i would get the most detail from the FF. When shooting high ISO and wanting the same depth of field across the board the m43 would be at say f1.8 1600 ISO, APSC f2.8 3200 ISO and FF f4 6400 ISO. The low light advantages arent quite as cut and dry as people make out. But the low ISO and increased detail is.
The X100V scalping price of 40% more than RRP is almost unheard of. I can't think of many other items that have gone that way in the more than 20 years of me being interested in photography. People moved to Fuji X cameras to get away from film prices going up but that's only resulted in the same problem.
Sharpness is heavily reliant on sensor size as you observed. Sharpness/resolution is measured in line pairs/mm of the sensor. Smaller sensors will inevitably have less detail due to it capturing less lp/mm. Given the same era of lenses, crop sensors actually require more alien technology than larger formats to break even in terms of resolution.
Kudos for properly understanding the nuances of the different sensor sizes and how that translates to the real world. This is a very rare thing on the internet! Most people don't understand that one of the biggest advantages of full-frame sensors is its performance at LOW Iso! And at high Iso, most people don't understand that full frame's noise advantage is only realized if the photographer is okay with having a thinner depth of field, and that if you want the same large depth of field typically achieved with smaller-sensor cameras while at the same shutter speed, the noise advantage at high Iso is lost.
@@danielfortune4283 thanks. I shoot poster art for comedians and have had really good results from m43 up to 1x2m approx in print size. But that's when it's a close up to medium portrait. Full length and it needs to be FF to render the correct levels of detail.
There’s one thing Fuji does better, not region locking their products. Sony doesn’t offer English menus in non English regions, it’s unnecessary and anti-consumer policy and no company doing this should be supported. Nikon starts to do it too.

Shoot both Fuji and Sony. With some effort my A7iii’s colors profiles are almost the same as my X-T4 film profiles. Took a while but I’m happy with the results.
Good to see you again here. I restarted photography with a Sony because the local camera shop owner steered me towards the brand. Then I bought a used Leica and I was hooked on manual shooting. I could live without everything else except my a7rV and my M10 Monochrom. They’re both very high performers, and I can do everything I want with those two cameras. I would like to sell my silver standard M10 though. The image quality of the original 24 MP M10 is too far behind the times.
Another fantastic video mate (Along with the reasons why video!) This is the video that interests me the most though as I've been with Fuji since the X-Pro1 and I've got to say, there are still some pretty notable holes in their lens line-up and the discontinued lines is definitely create cause for concern. The next two years will be VERY interesting to watch because if they don't revitalise some of these lines we may ONLY see the more expensive end of Fuji gear (XH2/GFX ect)
I'm hoping the praise on the GFX100ii makes them consider more aggressive modern designs, I'd like to see an X-Pro4 with a fixed screen to be honest, go back to the tank-like durability of the X-Pro2. A revamped 18mm F2 pancake (much in the same vain of the 27mm f2.8 R WR), maybe an X80 and a general focus on smaller more affordable cameras again, maybe a X-T300 and/or X-T40?
I have been a fan of Fuji for a LONG time but I feel recently they are making their already niche audience even smaller and the looming threat of properly build classic style full-frames like the Nikon ZF are certainly hitting all the notes that career based photographers such as myself and other Fuji fans are certainly noticing! Watch this space!
There seems to be rumour circulating about Fuji releasing a small pocket camera so will be interesting to see if anything comes of it!
Also super interested to see if we do get an XPro4 and X100_ what they will do to them, as I think it’ll give a good indication on what direction they are heading in

Agee on your list and would add lack of lens roadmap, bird AF (my niche use) and clunky AF in general on the smaller cameras (which are otherwise my favorites).
I no longer have any Fujifilm cameras, but I am still interested in the brand. I the past I had a following cameras X-Pro1, X Pro 2 and X-T3 and 4 few X mount lenses and being then Leica M user several M mount lenses from Leica, Zeiss and Voigtlander lenses that I used on Fuji bodies via Fuji adapter. Love the tiff files developed by Capture One. Fuji bodies are great for travel and walkaround use. As my main camera now is Leica SL2-S I have sold all Fuji stuff and purchased Panasonic S5II (L mount) to share lenses L and M mount lenses on both platforms.
Appreciate your videos, Goughie, but on this one I actually think you are missing the mark slightly. APS-C is, and will always be compromise and it's one you should be fully aware of when deciding on a camera system. Within that compromise, Fujifilm has been able to produce cameras that rival FF in many regards, but not all. ISO performance will be worse unless we see a real paradigm shift in sensor design. That a small sensor affects DR and noise at higher ISO shouldn't be a surprise.
As for their lineup and roadmap, I don't really see Sony, Nikon or Canon being any more transparent. Nor do I think that Fujifilm's release cycles are anything to complain about for one good reason: All modern cameras are already astonishingly good, Fujifilm included. In fact Fujifilm is the only brand that actually offers a true variety in ergonomics that caters to all tastes and habits with the same high quality, and at a retail price point that is not just reasonable, but actually cheap. None of the others offer this choice and affordability.
I will agree with you on two points and the first is autofocus. Even XH2/XT5 are still behind the competition. This is a major point that they need to address to stay relevant. Personally I'm still on X-T4 and X-E4 and I get by completely fine. I don't shoot sports or wildlife though. The second is that the lens lineup needs to catch up to itself. I too owned the 18mm f/2 and it's just appallingly bad. But then again I own both the new 23mm and 33mm f/1.4 lenses and they are so good they rival or surpass some of the most expensive Nikkor lenses I have used in the past. All brands have ugly ducklings in their lineup. I would say that of all of the Fujinon lenses I have used, 90% of them were more than sharp enough. Autofocus varies, but you have choices in that regard.
In conclusion: From where I'm standing Fujifilm is a thriving brand that continues to innovate and delivers lots of value. I think it's a smart move to go all-in on APS-C and medium format when everybody else is competing on FF.
I moved to Fuji from Nikon full frame almost 10 years ago - X100t, XT-20 and very recently XH2S.
Youre right about value - the XT20 was incredible value in 2018 and offered my a camera almost as capable as my old Nikon in a tiny package.
Another issue that I'd add to your list (and one that I think has probably become more of an issue as the cameras have become more complicated) is usability, particularly for video and in the PASM models (XS, XH and GFX) which lack the physical dials. With my X100, I mostly just adjusted the physical dials, but with more complicated options like auto focus modes and video settings available, the design and intuitiveness of the menus becomes much more important. They have the potential to really interrupt the shooting experience and make it feel much more like I'm wrestling with a Byzantine operating system rather than helping us feel one with the camera. A lot of video-oriented reviews of the XH2S highlighted usability as a weakness compared to other brands , and I didn't think it'd be an issue for me as a long time Fuji user but I have found it a frustrating.
There are also just some bonkers implementation decisions; my XT20, I could switch focus modes whilst shooting video (using the physical switch), but this isn't possible in an XHS2. I could also tell what my exposure comp was set to when shooting in M+auto iso (looking at the top dial) but this isn't possible on the XH2S, because rrhe exposure comp value on the display acts as a light meter in M. Other hybrid cameras can have Fn buttons assigned differently for video and stills mode but with Fuji you need to decide which mode matters most and map them that way or have a half and half that isn't great for either usage.
I still think that the XHS2 was the right choice for me as a hybrid camera... But only because of my existing lenses. If I was starting from scratch Sony would definitely make more sense. Not only could I get a better camera for the same money, but the wider selection of Sony and third party lenses would result in a much better set up for the same money.
Some very good points, Goughie. I’ve been a Fujifilm user for around ten years but have never seen the brand so backwards in coming forwards with products to meet the needs of photographers who have supported the brand and made it into what it’s become. How long has it been since we could buy a new X100V? The XE4 discontinued, likewise with the X-Pro3 it would seem, and no replacements on the horizon, not even the whiff of a rumour. Instead I’ve seen more effort being directed into the XH and GFX products which for many are outside their price point and justification. I hope we see new products released soon to show the ongoing evolution of the X100, XE and X-Pro lines, and a with it a commitment to a broader spectrum of photographers, but I’m not so sure. I hope I’m wrong.
Because unlike Sony et-al... they realize there's a little lull in technology that they're willing to take advantage of. Did you know up until recently Sony released an RX100 version EVERY YEAR?? I'm still shooting my XPro2 and don't feel a need to upgrade to anything else for awhile actually. Probably another few years or more. (If ever to be honest... tired of the rat race. Don't care if there's a little digital noise in some of my shots. Just like there's visible grain in some of the great photos of all time).
sadly Fuji changed business owners not too long ago. I feel this wouldn't have happened before...

Yes, agree with most of the points. Although I love the straight out of camera quality of photos, I did notice that shadow recovery, although good for HDR photos, it's not as solid as I had on sony.
But then using Capture One, I am able to even out, and still get good quality.

Fuji not having a current lens roadmap is pretty bizarre, and the 8 mm f/3.5 is a pretty wild choice for them to release haha. I know lenses I'd like to see would be a 10-20 f/2.8 for both architecture and landscapes, a 90 mm compact since the f2 is a bit of a beast for street photography, and 23 and 33 f1.4/f1.7 manual focus primes. I doubt the manual focus primes will happen but I can dream.
My nitpick is how the exposure drops when you zoom in on native zooms WITH constant aperture but doesn’t do it with third party lenses
I use Lightroom because of its convenience but regarding image quality I find it’s noticeably better with capture one in terms of sharpness and noise performance
FX 18mmf2 is my favourite lens. IQ is lovely. Af is absolutely fine especially on newer body like xt4. There is a bit of focus noise but honestly who’s using the camera mic for video?

it’s a weird situation where the more expensive prime is worse than the cheaper zoom in a few ways. They still sell that 18mm f2 here new for £550
I’ve by passed full frame and I use gfx medium format which kills all full frame in terms of image quality 📸 although I still have Fuji x series for street photography and a bit of pro work with flash so I don’t shoot high iso
Thankfully for my bank balance I’ve been pretty good at avoiding the GFX cameras
I think the problem with Fuji lenses is that in the past a compromise between weight and quality was taken. But now, some users (me included) would prefer top quality and heavier lenses on the pro line at least for 85, 135 equivalents and the tele zoom which aim at subject which demand top IQ
Top Pro point: the "vintage look photos". that's it, just one. Cons: a ton! plus the Cultish nature due to scarsity...y'know "supply and demand" makes price tag shoot up to the stratosphere....all your points are valid and on point...thank you Goughie....
smart to post two related video's at the same time. makes people want to watch both and makes the algorithm think "this dude is on fire, let's show him more". smart.

And more just to see the bias of the algorithm, when these two videos when live; by almost every measure the positive video was better! Watch time, click through rate etc!
But TH-cam recommended the negative video to 3x more people! 🤔 even though stats wise it was the least well received!

I'm not going to defend Fuji when it comes to their silence about the shortages since their silence leaves a bit of a mark on their reputation, but I think a lot of the money and weight savings is still there with the lenses compared to full frame. I imagine the only exceptions would be the 8-16 and the 200 f2, which in all fairness are probably the most niche lenses in their lineup.
The 18mm f/2 is one of the only lenses I've ever used that I couldn't find anything to like. Aside from the gripes you mention my copy wasn't sharp, outside of the centre, at any aperture. Not just soft but smeary. I used it for one trip away and sent it back immediately. I no longer shoot Fuji unfortunately but if I ever go back I hope they will have sorted their 18mm problem because on paper, it's a great lens to have.
I would go as far as to say that beside size, f2 fuji lenses are insanely overrated and I say that as a fuji shooter. The 23 f2 is probably the worst lens that I've used, unless you're shooting at f5.6 only. F1.4 lenses especially the new 18mm and 33mm are incredible pieces of glass any distance, any aperture, but the size is bigger than you'd like in a small format camera such as fuji (generally). On x-h2 it feels great, but on my x-t4 it gets a bit too big. I am really hoping to see x-pro 4 with an updated f2 lineup, or I will just sell all my fuji stuff and buy q3 (my wife might murder me)

Same frustrations I have with the used X100V's price. I ended up building a used but good as new Lumix GX8 with two Pana-Leica Summilux Prime and one Vario-Elmarit Zoom set all for less than a 1000 euros. I now have a fully Weather-Sealed kit and the Jpeg with the Pana-Leica lens are really good. That 3D effect is there and I can see it clearly. Yesterday, I pick-up a used Leica T with Leica 18mm f2.8 Elmarit for 850 euros complete set and good as new, and this put an end on my search for Fujifilm X100V. I still have my X-T1 with 35 f2 and 18-55 kit if I want a Film Simulations. Lumix GX8 and Leica T opens me to whole new different approach in Photography. I tried the Sony A7 III with CZ 24-70 f4 but never like it due to multiple reasons. Thanks for the video! Sums up my recent thoughts with Fujifilm X100V.

I recently sold my Sony FX3, I own an M11 as well which is stills only. So I was stuck with a video only camera and a stills only camera which meant 2 cameras everywhere I went.
I wanted something that could do both so I sold my FX3 and bought my XH-2S and I've been really happy with it.
This is a really interesting comment, someone last week asked me if I had an endless budget what would I use and I said FX3 and M11 😂

You forgot to add that Lightroom can’t habddle the Fujifilm files correctly leaving Capture One as your only option.
Erudite as always Goughie. Used to own the X100F and sold it. Regret it, not because fuji prices have gone up but just because it was a great camera to us. Now cost is a big issue

Thanks for the honest feedback, I feel the same switching from Canon FF to Fuji about 4 years ago. Most of my events that i get booked for are low light, Baptisms, small weddings I have a charity event coming up which is all indoors in the evening and im going to have to try shoot that whole night with Flash as anything around 2500 iso and above doesn’t really hold up professionally. Really wish I looked into Sony and with all the 3rd party lens options it probably would have been cheaper also.
3rd parties really are good at offering fast lenses at reasonable prices aren’t they!
The downside is always size; but when they are 1/4 of the price! It’s for some applications a no brainer
For high ISO try DxO PhotoLab DeepPRIME XD feature on RAWs. Turns your hardware into a beast. Even without that, I'm satisfied up to ISO 3200, and I turn NR to the minimum (with sharpness below 0).
@@Paul_Rohde thanks for that does this do a batch process? or one image at a time? My workflow with a single event requires dealing with hundreds of photos sometimes into 2-3 thousand.
@@eliaspap8708 Yes. After a shoot, I dump all the RAWs into it, and let it do DeepPrime on all of them, (I convert to DNG). (It takes time, but I have a 16-core Ryzen, and old gaming GPU.) Then the culling can be done. The good thing is, they offer a fully functional month trial, so you can test it out. They've just released a new version, usually done late in the year, so it's a good time to test it. Note, the software download modules itself for lens correction, for the lenses you have. So open RAWs from all your lenses first, and leave the program open for an hour or so first. You know its done it when you can tick the lens distortion correction box.
@@eliaspap8708Yes batch, it works as a LR plug-in. I'm a wedding photographer, and my Fuji workflow is to chose my photos over iso 1600, run them through dxo pureraw 3 deep prime.
They come out incredible. You get perfectly useable images up to iso 10000 - 12800
That is the thing. Fujifilm was always known for giving you a modern, good looking, easy to use camera at an affordable price. But since almost 2 years, certain models are impossible to get (ok, this was also true for Sony but they have managed to deal with it and it is now back go normal). It is beyond my understanding why they are not trying their best to keep up with demand and instead decide to completely discontinue the products...

Ha ha… again, being an old guy, I still shoot a lot of film cameras that are decades old. When I came to Fuji, from Nikon, I wasn’t too worried about getting the newest body, rather putting my money into the best lenses I could afford. So I’m not too worried about Fuji keeping us in the dark. How long did it take Canon, and Nikon to come out with a mirror less body?!! Cameras come and go, invest in good glass instead… my .2 cents.
As a Fujifilm/Nikon shooter, the only I dislike is definitely the app. Even with the new Xapp, the app is very disappointing. I am still having connecting issues with my XT5. And fujifilm really need to up their production line to fulfil their demand.
I have been on a very long journey. i think it started with canon, olympus, sony for years, fujifilm xt 3, then i bought the lumix s5 and now i am back to a fujifilm xt30ii. the XC kit lens is top in terms of photos, but the power zoom has bothered me. I recently bought a fixed focal length, the XC 35 f2. I am very happy with it and it only cost me 150 euros new. I think that's a good price and if you can make a few sacrifices, I'm very happy that fujifilm also offers the cheaper lens options.
I shoot Fuji for my street and if I am travelling for a weekend away. I also think they are great walk around cameras. But for my landscape, seascape,Astro and architecture I use FF D850 and there is a huge difference when you really want to push files. I wanted something lighter for street photography and something to start doing video on a small scale so I purchased X-T4 Oct 2020. The camera was not as small as I wished so I went out and bought 100V Nov 2020. At the start I brought two cameras but switching between range finder style and Xt-4 got a little annoying because two different style cameras. So when Xpro 2 great conditions was been sold I grabbed it and works great with 100v. The Xpro 2 is the camera I grab first now, the built quality and just prefer using it to the other two cameras. All 4 cameras have their purpose my my use. But with Nikon bring out FF retro style, Canon rumoured A1 retro FF camera to be released at some point, is the market shrinking for Fuji. Some fuji customers already jumped to Lecia and some thinking of purchasing new Nikon ZF FF. is it time for Fuji to start doing FF with XPro line up to give it a new lease of life with two new lens to get started. I would be first to buy one.
I can’t see Fuji joining the full frame market and tbh hope they don’t, they aren’t doing well at making maintaining APSC cameras, and they’dneed to start making a whole new lens line up for full frame

Fuji is never going to go full frame. They don’t have the R and budget to keep up with their APSC and medium format budgets so how can they do full frame as well? The owners have said many times that they would never go full frame.
The camera bodies cost may on par with a full frame however the glass on fuji is so much cheaper for example a Fuji 50-140 f2.8 is £1500 ish new and a canon £2200 and if you want the mirrorless one then youre looking more like £3000. As a hobbiest it all comes down to cost

Fully agree about Fuji leaving its customers in the lurch by making it so unclear if some of their cameras will even exist anymore, causing the crazy second hand pricing we're seeing. Also not updating the lens roadmap is similarly annoying. That said, they literally have zero competition, hoping Nikon can develop some compact F2 lenses with aperture rings to support their new Zf
They are busy developing GFX tanks and doing stupid cameras such us the Instax Pal.
Zf lenses also lack aperture ring, so it doesn’t offer the full ergonomics.

About the discontinued cameras is a recurring one. It happened with the X100F, X-E3, X-Pro2, X-H1... and we all know the story. About definition and noise, honestly I used Sony A7 R4 and sold it to use the X-T3/X-T4. There is much more to the end result than resolution for me at least. Saying that I just got the X-H2 and I do appreciate the extra megapixeis. :) The Leica lens are something that can't be compared to with any other. I have the Leica Q with a 24mp sensor and I can say without hesitation that the Summilux 28mm 1.7 is by far the best lens I ever used when it comes to sharpness. And the 24mp sensor, with this lens, its kind of magic.
The lens that for me blew my mind when it came to sharpness was the newest Leica 28mm f2.8 Elmarit! For me nothing has come close since!
Wait until you've shot with them for 11 years! I got my X pro 1 on launch, when Fuji were ahead of the game with the retro aesthetic and X-trans tech. I do feel a little left behind nowadays with my X Pro 2, but I love the camera that much I'm willing to forgive them for lack of innovation, or indeed Kaizen. The X Pro 4 will be the deciding factor for me, as the Nikon ZF is a tempting proposition.
I shoot Leica too, but love picking up my XP2 just as much 🙂

Fuji drive me crazy. I got back into photography with the X-e2 and then the X-Pro2. Sold the Pro kit and went to a Canon R6 because I "needed" full frame. Recently I dumped the Canon (nice, but boring) and got an X-Pro2 (graphite edition) with a 23 and 35 f/2, and a 14 f/2.8. I really love shooting Fuji, and especially the popular rangefinder-style cameras, but was baffled when they dumped all three (X-e4, X-100V, X-Pro3) without a clear replacement. I assume there will be an X-100?, but no word (or even rumor) on the other two. Fuji, what's up with you guys?
Coming from an A7riii to the xh2s, I definitely enjoyed the improved video specs and colors. But, even though the xh2s is significantly newer, the autofocus is about even with the a7riii and I miss the massive variety of lenses Sony had available.
Fuji has tamron and Sigma , it is hard not to find what you need don’t you think?

Thank you for the video, very interesting. Moving from 20years of Canon Pro to Fuji X-H2 and X-H2s 6 month ago, my first main disappointment/challenge was the interface! I have been quite surprised you did not mentionned this point. The ergonomy is poor, the logic is beyond my understanding, not to mention the (french) localization that is so approximative that I decided to switched back to english ^^
I bought the XS20 earlier this year because I wanted a camera and lenses for travelling that are lighter than my Sony A7iv kit - which I still own. I have had APSC in the past, the Nikon D7000 and D500, which were both great cameras - particularly the latter. I might have stuck with that, but I wanted full frame which is why I traded it in for the Sony. I am generally very pleased with the XS20, but I have to say the image quality isn't as good I'd hoped. It's OK. But things start to quickly fall apart when I zoom into the image in post. Also, the XS20, popular as it will be I am sure, could have been great with three features. Weather sealing, dual cards and - full frame. Yes, I know. This last one isn't the Fujji way, but I really wish it was. If they could develop FF into a neat package like the XS20 it would sell like hot cakes - and I would be first in the queue.
If you think Fuji users have been left behind with AF, try being a Zoe tax shooter. They are really behind on AF. Still it’s not an issue with the way I shoot but Fuji cameras are certainly snappier with AF, than my Pentax.
But I agree on the full frame front. Full frame, Pentax K-1 ii Has much Cleaner image files whether they be raw or JPEG, Ann it’s particularly noticeable in low light and contrast conditions. The dynamic range is better than my X -E4 and difficult lighting conditions there is no way I would trust important photos to my Fuji - I go straight to my Pentax K-1 ii. You just know the image files are gonna be great.
The other thing that has been very underwhelming with the x-E4 is the cheap buttons and poor ergonomics. It’s a fun little camera and I do like using it, it looks good and is light but it isn’t nearly as nice in the hand as my K-1 ii. That thing is tough, feels great, and just is so nice to hold and shoot with. Maybe the other Fujis feel okay but my X-E1 and X-E4 feel like toys. Actually the X-E1 is better with better buttons and layout than the latest.
The price of the bigger sensor is no longer an issue. But you should still be able to get faster and cheaper lenses for APS-C. I really like my Samsung NX and fell sorry it's discontinued.
Good points. Manual focussing on the x100f I had frustrated the hell out of me, and it’d sometimes miss shots as the shutter button still needed to engage halfway (as if auto focussing) to actually take the shot. Bit the bullet and jumped to Leica after that!
Yeaaaaah manual focusing is a nightmare on mirrorless cameras! I really struggle with peaking!
I agree on the Lens Lineup. The new lenses are more focused on the XH and XT Lineup, are larger & bulky and no more as retro-sexy like the Fujicrons or even the old 23/35 f1.2/1.4 Versions. The new 18 is simply ugly. I would love to see updates of the old 14/18/27 Fujicrons. As pure JPEG shooter I do not care to much about the Shadow noise
As a hobbyist photographer, I find the obsession with autofocus and video specs unnecessary. I've been using the X-Pro 2 and X-T2 with various Fuji and vintage lenses, treating them like the film cameras or a Leica M. While Fuji might not be the top choice for professionals, which should be obvious for professionals , it excels in travel, documentary, and family (your family) photography. Investing around $4k in 3 bodies (also got X-Pro 1 for a few years) and multiple native lenses, I haven't upgrade anything for a year or two. Planning to sell some lenses, I'll keep the 3-4 I use most. It's all about what works for you, not just the specs.

I usually shoot with FF cameras for my professional work, but ocassionally I use Fuji cameras for personal work. I’ve owned many of them since 2012, starting with the X100 and X-Pro1. Mostly brilliant cameras, but I fully recognize the points you make. I’m especially annoyed by the switch Fuji made a few years ago. Most of the typical Fuji cameras that sets them apart from most other brands, are now permanently out-of-stock or discontinued. Except for the X-T5, efforts go to catching up with other brands with PASM-style cameras and introducing new GFX cameras and lenses to get some of the lucrative FF market. I really hope they’ll re-focus also on the X-Pro, X-E, X100 and X-Txx line-up and start updating their older lenses (18/F2 but also 18-55, 14 and 60). Many complain about AF, but I have issues with their manual focus. How it is now implemented, it is close to useless. Some cameras offer the linear option, but even then the focus throw is different per lens. Please Fuji, take a look at how Panasonic does this and learn…
I think this focus on sensor size as this category defining thing is so silly (same apply to M4/3). Yes, sensor size is *a factor*, but it's not the be-all defining characteristic of a camera. Unless you specifically want that 35mm sensor size look (which I can understand if you're going for Leica for example), I think people vastly overestimate it's importance. Not to mention that there is a tradeoff with everything and it's not just price. If you want really compact but still relative fast *autofocusing* primes in compact bodies APS-C (and specifically Fuji X) is your only option. If you want a really compact setup with really long zooms pretty much only micro four thirds can provide that (they are popular among nature photos for a reason). So that's what you're paying quite a bit for with Fuji: compact autofocusing lenses and cameras that are still relatively fast.
Completely agree regarding the cancelled models though. I love Fuji for their interface (modeless control of exposure and marked dials) and I worry they have so few cameras in that category now.
And you other points are quite valid. I don't agree with them personally, but I think if you're the kind of person that care about a lot of those things, then yeah, Fuji isn't probably for you. I mean, personally I find Fuji refreshing is that it is *not* about the most impressive specs, but simply a good photography experience. I don't think it's a coincidence that a lot of people in the Fuji community also love older camera models.
Complaint is sorta bizarre I'm not overly concerned if my xe4 is getting a mk 5 because my xe4 exisits in my hand today. I'm not in a lurch the cameras arent meant to be disposable.
I bought a refurbished x-t30 direct from Fuji for £499 at the start of 2022. £200-£300 more if you want the same used camera now

Good vid, Gougie, as always. Wish Fuji would have introduced a FF line, instead of the medium format GFX series. High ISO performance of the X series is indeed not as good as FF; then again, that is to be expected. Also agree that Fuji has made some weird choices in the later lens line-up, like the 8mm, the 30mm macro and the 50mm f/1.0. That said, I do think that Fuji glass is very good, in general, at least IQ wise. The camera line-up is a bit confusing, these days; not clear where Fuji is heading. Still enjoy the shooting experience of the XT series (currently shooting with an XT4), though.
I think Fuji made the right decision to avoid the full frame market. It is a blood bath. Too much competition. Instead, Fuji dominates the APSC and medium format markets. I wouldn’t want to jump into markets dominated by Sony, Canon, or Nikon. They have more resources than Fuji and Fuji would have more difficulty competing for the diminishing camera market.

@@martingreenberg870 The main qualities people buy Fuji APSC for (colours, camera design/layout) would still apply to a full frame camera. Looking at compact FF options like Sony A7c, Sigma FP, Canon R8, I can't help but feel Fuji would make a better camera than all of those.

Why even compare to a Leica M10 when most people will not own this camera in their lifetime? Too expensive, unless you are a professional photographer. I use the X-T10 and the 27mm f2.8 lens in low light and outdoors, and in my opinion, it is great.
Funnily enough my XH2S is worth about the same as my M10,
It’s less about the M10 and more about full frame counterparts, just that the M10 is the only full frame camera I own, the A7iv would show the same differences

I feel Fuji has dropped the ball. They are charging big money for their new cameras but still perform average with autofocus and high ISO. Their new high performance lenses are expensive and big in size. The advantages of owning an APC camera may not be there anymore. A full frame camera may be a better proposition. I was happy with my little XE3 with the small lenses. Now with the XT5 and bigger lenses I am not as satisfied with the image quality and extra weight.
I sold all my Full frame gear (Nikon Z) and switched to Fuji. My only regret is why I didn’t do it sooner. Full frame gear is heavy and no fun to travel with.
It’s not that Fuji has any real competition, unfortunately. Every other digital camera (apart from Leica) feels and operates like a Sony …

I dont think your assesment of the ISO noise is fair tbh, youre comparing it to a full frame sensor no less. I just edited 300+ underexposed photos of a trip and it mostly consisted of shots that i had to raise the shadows and blacks + exposure and was pretty, pretty happy with the results. Granted none of them would make a great 2m sized print, but still.

A matter of perspective I guess, the difference is still there with full frame of the same value as the Fuji,
In the other video I do point out you don’t lose too much now when you go to crop, but at the same time the price advantage of Fujis has kinda gone too!
You compare the sony a74 with XH2 at same price or cheaper , but the fuji is a stacked sensor with much better AF!

Not better AF, not at all! No better image quality by far. But the Fuji has more options. Shutter speed over 1/8000 on EL shutter makes quite a difference on daylight for lenses with large aperture. And the shutter sound. The Sony will wake your neighbors at every photo. Fuji mechanical shutter is super quiet! Maybe the money is spend on these things while developing the camera. But they still lack at autofocus.
All of this is true. BUT, if you want camera that is really and noticeably better than xh2s for video, you gotta go at least to Sony fx3, or Canon R5 C, or Nikon Z8. All of them double the price of xh2s. And even then it is not better by big margin.

I agree to a large part of your arguments.
To me, as a fujifilm user since the x-pro 1 up to the x-pro 3 and some of the e-series (never was attracted by the T- or H-series nor the X100-series), it is absolutely unclear what to choose from Fujifilm if I had to choose today. While I am not the one who always needs to have the latest gear, it would be great to know in which direction Fuji is moving - and also with the lenses.
And as I always shoot RAW, Film Recipes also do not matter too much to me. And at least, it is aps-c…
Furthermore Fujifilm seems to heavily focus much more on video capabilities - and that is something I do not need.
So in the end, I am considering to switch to another brand and full frame and a clear focus on photography.

After having attended two weddings and conducted numerous tests, I can only say that the AF-C for moving subjects on Fuji cameras is truly disappointing. I wouldn't have expected this since almost all the tests claimed that Fuji had made significant improvements. Next year, I'm going to purchase the Sony A7 IV as my primary camera because I missed too many shots regardless of the AF-C settings I used. It's a pity, really.
I hear you! I’m not sure the reviews are wrong though! They are much better than the older ones! But they are still a decent way off of the competition! I can imagine indoors at a wedding they’ll miss a fair amount!
autofocus is overrated men... only for sports it's really important
The telephoto lens are so weak if you compare them to other brands. The 150-600 is so expensive and ony opens to f8 at 600. I have the 300 with x1,4 and it's so frustating shooting with low light..
I'm not sure i agree about lenses. part of why i shoot fuji is that all of their fast primes are smaller and cheaper than most full frame primes AND they all have a very high level of optical quality. you're comparing an 18 f2 from when the system came out. the new 18 1.4 is considered one of the best lenses of any system, period. 14 2.8, 23 1.4, 33 1.4 , 56 1.2, 90 f2, etc all incredibly good optically. if you want more compact you might sacrifice a bit but still get great optics relative to a similar sized lens from a competitor. i wish there were more lens options in between, like a 16 f2 compact instead of 2.8 or an 18-55 2.8 that is smaller than the 16-55 but brighter than the current 18-55. but i digress....

I think half the problem is full frame companies have realised how much people value small size, and lenses for full frame used to all be huge! But Sony as a good example now have a really good range of small primes! Expect for Canon, they seemed to see the move to mirrorless as an excuse to make lenses even bigger 😂
@@Goughie haha. i may agree that they need more 1st party lenses, but i still think the lenses they have are all small and optically great. i think with very few exceptions you can buy an x series lens and know it will be optically great. also, compared to a full frame zoom the fuji 16-55 2.8 is smaller and cheaper than any full frame option and superb optically. I just wish there was an even SMALLER 2.8 zoom. Sigma makes an 18-55 2.8, but no aperture ring. and fuji makes the 18-55 but it's variable aperture. fuji should make their own 18-55 2.8 with fuji level optics. that would make it smaller than the 16-55 but brighter than the 18-55. in my opinion an amazing compromise/balance. :)
Been a professional photographer nearly 20 years and I can still never figure out how serious photographers can limit themselves to only ONE system, how terribly boring. Ive owned cameras and lenses from all the major brands and currently have cameras and lenses from Fuji, Panasonic and Canon. Mostly use the Fuji and Canon for photos and the Panasonic for video. I am planning to add a Sony to the mix sometime soon too. Expand your horizons and create art with more than a single brand of camera.
Honestly felt this I started with a canon, switched to Nikon than switched to Panasonic and am now back to canon as my main but want to get into Fuji you never know what you like until you try it

@@elo0915 and? Most people watching these videos are hobbyists/enthusiasts and most hobbyist/enthusiast have money to burn. Take some of that $4k you’re going to drop on a new camera body to replace your one year old body and get into another system. It’s not difficult at all.
You can get into the Sony system for about $1k buying used. That’s for a body and a couple lenses. You can get into M43 even cheaper. I’ve owned 3 systems at once and I’m far from rich.
Feel the same I've been bouncing around brands for ages just sell off gear if it isn't for me. Brand loyalty really shouldn't be a thing find what works for your own style .

I think for canon users it’s a no-brainer because ef glass with the red ring is easily adapted but sadly I never got into canon

Honestly, l like Fuji cameras themselves, but I don’t like Fuji colors…except for photos of people. I often find them off…guess I agree with Ken Rockwell in that regard and find them dull; think it is purely subjective. I like Canon and Panasonic usually straight out of the camera.
I like Fujifilm for their Q menu, colours and the stills' photography image quality, that is identical on any x-trans III, IV and even V camera. The entry level X-T30 has the same IQ as the Xpro3, X-T3, X-T4, X-T5... and so on. Sure, some of the newer cameras are 40mpx, but the IQ is still very comparable if not the same.

@@Goughie There's not much to be improved in the IQ department. The sensor technology is pretty much the same for many years now. My point was, that with an entry level Fujifilm camera you can have the same IQ as you would with their top tier cameras. Which is a good thing. The difference being that the more expensive cameras are faster, have better AF, more features, better video spec features, higher res. EVFs and LCDs, weather resistant bodies, IBIS... but the IQ is the same, and that's why I like Fujifilm. You don't have to pay for what you do not need, yet you're never lacking the IQ.
I really don't understand about the shortage of fuji parts. Like if so then why are they still releasing new camera like X-S20. I think what fuji is doing is removing their budget range of cameras and becoming like sony expensive. I understand why sony is expensive because it's full-frame and the AF but fuji is really push it. I dunno who will break first them or their consumer. If they continue to do this, it will only push people to just go to other brands since they are literally asking for the same price.

Fair points. I left Fuji about 2 years ago for similar reasons and have zero regrets. If I need a more manual/tactile experience, I just grab my Q2. For everything else, I'm using Sony bodies and mostly Sigma glass.

Even used it is very expensive. I don’t like the 28mm FOV. Yes I could digitally zoom in. That seems too much like work. Maybe if they presented a 35 or 50mm choice I could consider that choice.

Wow! You have just summed up how I feel about Fuji this year. I switched to Fuji in 2019, and sold my Sony A7ii because I didn't like their colours, the yellow/green raw files, nor did I like the Sony lenses, which were very expensive, especially the Zeiss designed lenses. So I bought an X-T3, upgraded to X-T4, and at the end of last year bought an X-T5. However, I find that I have had a few issues with their lenses. I find it difficult to find a good combination of lenses. the XF 10-24 is superb, but I also bought the XF 16-80 a couple of years ago, and it is fairly adequate. A few months ago, I bought the new XF 18-120mm lens and had quite a few focusing problems, in fact I think that this lens is probably best for video shooters. But now what? The XF 16-55mm and 50-140mm Red Badge zooms are nice and sharp, but they are really heavy and unwieldy on my X-T5, which defeats the object of having a Fuji. I have a few primes too, for shooting portraits and street, but they are quite expensive. Also the RAW files have little worms/artefacts when you examine them in Adobe Lightroom, and it was suggested that I ought to edit them in Capture One? What I would like is Fuji to create some really good zoom lenses which are equivalent to the Sony G Lenses (not to be confused with the G Master). I still have my X-T5 and a few lenses, but I have recently bought a Sony A7iv, and a few new lenses. They've fixed their colour science, and they've introduced some superb lenses, the FE 20-70mm f4 G and the 70-200mm f4 G OSS are razor sharp, as is the new FE PZ 16-35mm f4 lens. The auto-focus is absolutely stunning. I find myself using the Sony instead of the Fuji for a lot of shooting now, and only using the Fuji for when I want to travel light, and maybe shoot in a city.
While I haven't done an extensive study of the problem, I haven't seen any 'worms' with my X-T5 in Lightroom. I've look at many photos that should show the problem and I just don't see it. Either Fujifilm fixed it or Lightroom did. I think (hope) it's a thing of the past, or at best it's a rare occurrence.
@@scottallen6172 Try magnifying your images? Up close you can see lots of tiny "worms" in the detail, which isn't there in Capture One. Google the problem and you'll find that there is a well-known problem with Fuji files.

Recently switched from my X-S10 to a Nikon Z5. Nikon has a small 28mm f2.8 and a small 40mm f2. For the price of my X-S10 and the 23mm and 35mm I got a Z5, the 28mm,40mm and 24-70mm. The used prices at Fujifilm Take away the fun in expanding the gear
They do! And they also give people a really good opportunity to leave the eco system too by making the most of the prices! It’s a bad place to be I think!
With high resolution full frame sensors of 60mp available now, I feel like my perfect Fuji would have a full frame 60mp sensor with the option to shoot aps-c crop of 24 megapixels. That would give you the option to shoot smaller glass for travel and full frame glass when doing pro work. I also really wish Fuji would let you save custom film sim recipes for re-processing raw files after the fact.
They do with the Fujifilm studio desktop application! You can save recipes and it’ll apply them to RAWs if you connect up the original campers

Because it proves the point that crop has limits, it’s one of the best Fujifilm lenses and full frame opposition is better! If I’d used a Sony GM or a Canon RF lens it’s the same answer
There is no perfect camera. I'm loving fuji with all of it's drawbacks, since those are not my main priorities (eg. autofocus speed).
I also would not compare Fuji with Full frame prices, since full frame has also it's own disadvantages. Many people could afford full frame, still choosing Fuji for those features which are Fuji's strength, and not just the price.

I would never switch to Fuji unless it's medium format. I had 2 Fuji cameras they feel ametuer and toy-ish.
