I don't know about Fuji since I left it a few years ago on Sony, but with Sony a dynamic range boost gives you darker raws for some reason (darker than what you see in the live view and darker than the jpgs), and less light does affect af performance (on Sony I struggled with eye af for quite a few time until I found out about this)
Nice video btw, I'm happy to see an objective review for a change (but I'm also loving the drama around this 😂 )

Same. I left Fuji, even though I absolutely love their style, because eye af on x-t20 was a joke and because the use experience was so much slower than Sony. Also I hate the d-pad and Sony gives me 4 customizable dials. But I do miss Astia and the overall aesthetic so much

It's not hard to believe, because I will always say the same thing. The Fuji package is amazing, and their lenses are fantastic. But they need the reliable focus to take it to the next level. I cannot rely on their focus for run&gun situations in a wedding, and low light dance photos are a struggle. I don't experience this using Sony, which is a shame since I really love Fuji's system.

I went to my local park this morning. Found a tame Canada Goose who let me get 9 feet away. X-T5, 70-300mm at 70, f8, 1/600, iso 640, AF-C, spot focus, CL, subject set to bird. Put the goose's eye in the box, box went green, and i took the shot. Reviewed the shot, zoomed in and the eye was soft but the neck was sharp. I looked at the camera and said "well that explains why i've had so many bad shots, user error."

She wasn't moving, neither was I. Missed the shot. Still, I got a nice shot of our garden fence behind her left shoulder. Why didn't she know she should have stood closer to the fence?

I generally don’t have too much issues with either my X-T4 or X100V given the way I ahoot with single point autofocus and still or slow moving subjects. However, I have never had so much focusing trouble as with the 70-300. I bought it for a particular trip and struggled with it the whole time. Almost never use it. It’s supposed to be relatively good due to being LM but I hate it.

    • @lumberjack3008
      @lumberjack3008 20 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

Try zooming with the 70-300mm while shooting bursts of an object moving ... the AF of my 70-300mm collapsed immediately (shooting speedway - the 50-140mm isn't impressed).
The AF capabilities of the 16-55mm are great. But that doesn't help, if the camera is the problem.
If the lens has a problem or bug too, that's when it's going to be very funny.

    XH2s user here.
You are absolutely right about everything. I ALSO HATE THAT I LOVE FUJI SO MUCH but for good AF will I need a Sony soon. The bride scenario you describe is the perfect example.
I'm from Germany and in the German forums at Fuji you will also be harshly criticized if you raise these problems. I tried to shoot a sitting duck in the grass with the xh2s and the 50-140, which is known for its speed in AF.
No chance, not a sharp picture because the autofocus tricks me. And the best thing is that you talk about these things and no one takes them seriously because everyone says you don't adjust the camera correctly :D. Imagine that in order to photograph a sitting duck in the grass, with Fuji you first have to get a university degree in autofocus, while with other brands you simply turn on bird detection and get started...
    Crazy.

I’m a stills guy and wouldn’t know how to use video, so I shoot Leica and Fuji. If I wanted video I’d shoot Sony - everyone knows that!. However, the problem here is that some of Fuji’s models are marketed as videocentric, so for the money they SHOULD be better, but Fuji are at least 5 years behind the curve in this area.
Like I say, it’s not an issue for me but it would certainly hold me back from completely relying on Fuji’s autofocus in critical situations like weddings and events.

So it's very hard for them to test their AF system.

I really hope them fuji cultist realise that what you are doing is trying to start a movement that would make fuji change their ways but spiderman, rangerover, jail and all them fuji clowns wants it to go back. I can't believe they would even suggest manual focus on a stacked sensor top of the foodchain fully spec'd out advanced mirrorless camera that came out in 2022.
I posted on reddit about my frustration with the xh2 and i got downvoted to oblivion lol. I was told that I don't know how to use a camera when I shot with a canon 5dII for 10+ years... At least the 5dii autofocus doesn't lie like the fuk*n green fuji box that is unpredictable. That bride holding the flower example is one of the biggest thing that made me switch out of fuji xh2. she was walking down the aisle, I had to make a quick decision, my default is eye detect and it detected the flowers... I did a burst of maybe 40 shots hoping that I get a good shot in one of them but unfortunately, the 8 photos in focus, she was making a weird face. I get that I could move to single point AF and AF-S just to be more accurate and I did that eventually but what is the point? Like why do I even bother with an expensive camera if single point + AF-S is what I gotta do? might as well go use an old full frame dslr.
Keep it coming edvard. At this stage I just enjoy the comedy because I am not sure if Fuji or their obsessed fanbase wants anything to change in their system.

“Bob the Mod” threatened to have me kicked off The DPR Fuji forum because I questioned his “cease and desist” mandate for any commentary questioning the 6.0 FW update… this is precisely where I go to ensure there are not bugs in new FW updates. That attitude firmly moved me right past buying the X-H2 I had planned and I upgraded to an A7RV. The next weekend I got to play with an X-H2S at a store where we were vacationing… AF wasn’t even in the same league as my A7IV or A7RV… it’s a shame as I love Fuji’s platform. The A7RV gives me 26mp in Crop Mode and gives me an instant 1.5x TC for all my Sony lenses (or I can use MRAW for the FF equiv.). Essentially I bought a mini MF, FF, and APSC all in one. I should thank “Bob” he saved me a lot of $ in the end.

I’ll stay in the Sony forum :D. Pretty mature forum now that so many have left other platforms for it. I had a first gen Nikon Z6 a few years back and although it was a fantastic camera it was leagues behind what the competition was doing in terms of autofocus. I was always doubtful after taking shots and had to double check because of the false positives the camera gave. People have to understand that the autofocus technological advancements are helping us get better photos. Yes we can always use single point and manual focus but then what is the point of buying an advanced camera? Only when you shoot with a modern sony, canon or even the latest nikon cameras do you realise what you have been missing. You concentrate more on the other aspects of photography or videography like composition, lighting, exposure etc and leave the autofocus to the camera and be confident that they will be in focus. No good will come by defending brands who are simply not keeping up with what they claim in their marketing material.

The usr error excuse is hilarious. I was an X-H2S freaking expert and had very good results, half the time. My R6MII AF does all the work for me, all the time. The difference is STAGGERING. I liked almost everything about the Fuji, except for the laughable AF. The stacked sensor really does allow you to get more out of focus photos per second than any other brand.

I've been reading the comments and thought the same thing! I've been a longtime Fujifilm shooter. Recently, I ordered the X-T5, but the autofocus was so bad I had to return it, no matter what lenses I used - XF33mm f/1.4 WR, XF18mm f/1.4 WR, XF56mm f/1.2 WR. I'm switching to Sony because my patience has worn out. I hate to do it because I loved everything else about the X-T5, but I can't accept that the autofocus rarely hits the eye. I didn't buy this expensive camera to use single-point AF when shooting portraits and moving subjects. Much cheaper cameras can manage that.

The guy taking a photo of a (not his) baby .... has taken ~65.000 photos with his XH2 - according to XApp - bought his first camera 40 years ago. Has a XH2s too, 11.000 shots with both during a weekend..(no AF issues with the XH2s). Not much experience, of course ;-)
    P.S.: he ordered a Nikon Z8 yesterday.
P.S.: "don't use eye AF" - that's like "don't use the internal light meter" ...
The camera should not take this work over from the user too. External light meters are great....

Yeah. Nikon autofocus prior to Expeed 7 was mocked but there the problem was speed not accuracy. When the Zf came out, I was interested to switch from X-T3 to the Zf. With the Zf, autofocus is a blast. It is just „boom, done“. Granted, every cameras has a few annoyances. Why has Nikon decided to not put a small thumb grip on that thing? Why don’t they have more smaller lenses for that camera? There is no perfect camera and those who say, you are wrong. You are just ignoring the issues ;)

Because tracking for birds is slow and inaccurate and you run into the same exact issues you've shown in your other tests. I got H2S because I love using Fuji cameras for the experience and didn't want to spend $5k or so on a Sony a1 just for af and burst speed. So yeah the person defending with bird photos is definitely just using zone focus and trying to twist the argument lol.

I want them to be accountable with the marketing and promises they make to their customers. I want them to not just talk big about Kaizen but actually listen to customer feedback and invest in the necessary R&D to improve. I genuinely want them to succeed and want them to have a larger customer base, and I sincerely hope they make the AF system capable enough to make that a reality.

Thank you for saving me from buying an X-T5. I was deliberating about buying a Fujifilm camera, as I really love the colours, but autofocus is really, really important to me. I have a 6 month-old daughter, and I need to have pictures of her that are in focus, even when there are objects near her face. My Sony a6000 does an OK job of this, but even so, I'm looking for better AF than it has, with better resolution for prints. As much as I was drawn to the X-T5 by the gorgeous colours and the higher resolution, your videos have shown me that I'm absolutely not going to be able to buy a Fuji until Fuji has fixed this issue. Looks like I'm going to be going with a Sony A7Cr or A7rV for my next camera now.

There are fanboys unwilling to see the wood from the trees, there are Fuji users that recognise the weaknesses and work with the camera not against it to get the best results, and there are then those that foolishly upgrade at the earliest opportunity to the latest Firmware and then don't shut up about the problems it has brought them. But the worst are those that just use a platform to regularly mock anyone with a positive attitude and those sensible enough to wait and see with all firmware updates before jumping in with both feet to make irreversible changes without knowing what bugs it might bring. And Fuji isn't alone in this.
There's a difference between highlighting a problem, in what real world situations it manifests (enough with the hand/eye and drunk people walking), and how to get the best out of the camera until the issues are addressed, and just winging about it in clickbait videos.
I was out shooting this morning with the x-t5 (latest FW) and 90mm and turned my attention to the bees diving in and out of some poppies about 5m away. I was already in zone, so half press to get the focus on the poppies, switched to bird detect and fired off a few shots in single shot mode. Wide open of course. 80% hit rate on bees from 5m away. Luck, settings, user? Subject detect doing its job? Or maybe I'm just presenting a limited example of a very specific situation that specifically highlights a point I want to make on the AF. All I need now is a TH-cam channel, a shocked face thumbnail and clickbait tagline.

Thanks for doing your tests and for calling out the denials and blind stuff. I love Fuji but I am all for truth. I wouldn't say it's just Fujifanboys that do this- but just fanboys in general. I had some one explain to me why I should never edit directly not he memory card (defending Capture One, which can't do that). DXO and Iridient Digital allow me, and I want to do a quick preview/share.
I was told I was clearly not a professional, not following best practices and what not. It's amazing how people either attack you, or attack your proposition by saying that it's not right, it's not kosher or professional- instead of trying to do a logical argument, inquire about settings, try this or try that without a pre-judgement of the outcome.
I hope Fuji picks this up and simply fixes it. I find ironic that it seems the camera can find the eye- I think that's more than half the battle to get this working.

My favourite from Fujifam for all those years was : use single point or manual focus, that's how pros work. Yeah I was using single with my old Nikon D700 for years and I don't buy new tech for over $2000 to revert to those old lame methods. With Canon R8 and Nikon Zf I am having hard time to miss focus whether in video or in photo regardless of settings and that's how it should look like in modern camera. I can focus on composition or interaction with my subject instead. Fuji fanboys are like wives beaten by their alcoholic husbands...they will make all possible excuses, but he is a good guy, he just beats me on Sundays so it's not that bad and I will stay with him no matter what. If that's your cup of tea then fine but stop making excuses and those stupid comments for others. If you like single point, zone, manual focus then crawl back to your cave and be happy. Btw I am using my Fuji with zone AF and manual lenses to have fun and I get nice images in focus but I can't imagine how all those pro shooters that use XH2S for weddings feel like now when all of the sudden their hit rate with eye-AF dropped significantly. I guess they just wait in hope for a fix and until then reverted to single and zone af or maybe shoot in 30fps bursts and then go through million's of images to select those couple ones which nailed focus. Either way not great experience.
