I was going to get the Sony a6700. Then I considered this newly released Fuji X-M5. Pros for the Fuji: smaller, lighter, 6.2 opengate, can shoot Black Magic Raw with external monitor, $600 cheaper. Pros for Sony a6700: Much better autofocus, has an EVF, weather sealed, better battery life, more lenses available. I also considered the FX30. But I finally decided I want a mechanical shutter. Decided to go with the Sony a6700.
A solid choice for sure. If the a6700 and FX30 came out at the same time, I probably would have gone for the a6700 too for more of a hybrid. And I'm also really happy to have a mechanical shutter on the X-M5. Hope you love the a6700 when you get it (if you haven't already) 😄
@@greggh a6700 was also on my wishlist, but I still use my older DSLR Cannon for photos. I already have a lens collection for it, so I went for a video focused camera (FX30).

Congratulations for your new camera, I just waiting to receive my XM5 😍 I'm mostly into photography and I spent 15 years shooting with Canon plus some Sony gears in the last three years. I always wanted to try the Fujifilm because of the Film simulation and the retro design. I spent one entire year shooting just with Fujifilm and I felt in love straight away. It's so much fun and the design is incredible. I still own a FF mirrorless Canon but I use the most the Fuji Xpro3 and Now I can't wait to receive the new baby ❤
thank you! I'm really happy to have it too. And that's awesome. I hope you love the x-m5 just as much as the xpro 3! It's always exciting to have a new tool to shoot with, and there really is something to be said about how much fun Fuji cameras are to use 😃 hope you have fun with the new x-m5!
Excellent video. Congratulations for sharing your view and thoughts about the cameras. I have an X-S20 and I'm in this dilemma of buying an X-M5 with a 27mm TTArtisan lens to make the set as compact as possible and to be able to carry it around more easily than with the X-S20 (also because it's a cheaper set to carry around). Out of curiosity, was this video recorded with the X-M5? It's very good!!!
Thank you! That would definitely make a small, light set up. I have the viltrox 23 and 56mm. Those were the two primes I picked up. And it pairs particularly nicely with the plastic 56mm due to it's weight. And yes! I filmed the whole video on the x-m5 aside from some of the b-roll shots that I filmed before the x-m5 came in. The whole talking head I know for sure was autofocused x-m5 on my 23mm viltrox. It came out pretty well in my opinion too, despite the fact I didn't do a great job lighting it in retrospect 😂 Very happy with it though!
See some videos made by Ukrainian photographer Artem Hvozdkov with the XC 15-45. I use it for stills so I don't know about the video. The power zoom over shoots so I set it to the focal length I want to use, before I shoot.
I also bought the XC 15-45mm kit lens with the x-m5. It's not an amazing lens, but I do like it as an intermediate photo/video shooter. I think the biggest pros are the affordable price, light weight (plastic body) and small size. So, it pairs well with the small, light size of the x-m5. It also does produce a nice image quality for the cost I think. If you're new to cameras, I think it's a good first lens while you're learning. However, I'm still getting used to using it and learning more about it 😄
The wide is great for the size and a kit zoom. Zooming in tends to decrease the quality on this particular lens. It is fine for a started lens. Once you know what you want, you can upgrade, keep, or build lenses.
Im looking at this camera and backorder it, tbh I do like the fact its budget friendly with the latest tech. Using my student discount its 100$ cheaper, its good as a first time camera. XM5 imo is the perfect hybrid, it can be used for travel or for some work. With extra len, and a gimbal , for about 1000$ I can do some work with it. People complain about the lack of stabilization and OVF, etc but its 700$ brand new.. I cant even get a similar spec camera for that price without dropping 1500$+
I also think it's a really good deal considering it as a whole package. What you save in cost you can use for accessories and lenses, like you said with the gimbal. It all depends on how you want to use it 😃
LMAO! I own an FX30 (recent owner) and am already looking at adding a B-cam and THIS is the one I have been eyeing! Wanna get this with a 30-35mm lens, camera cooling fan, put it on a gimbal or tripod and use it for when I don't want to risk damaging/losing my FX30. My other alternatives to the X-M5 is the ZV-E10 Mk 2 or A6700.
Ahh no kidding! I mean, there could definitely be a strong case for staying inside the Sony ecosystem since you’re keeping the fx30. But, I have no regrets 😄 Especially the more I get used to the x-m5 and its controls. But also because of what you said. I’m much less anxious with it out and about.
@afternoon_coffeehouse Have you used yours on a gimbal yet? One of the biggest complaints I see/hear about the X-M5 is the lack of IBIS... and AF. IBIS can probably be fixed with a gimbal and AF can be fixed with a manual focus lens, like a Sirui Nightwalker or 7Artisan Cine lens. Sorry for rambling on. Looking forward to more X-M5 vids! BTW, where did you buy yours from? BHP has them, but on pre-order??? They supposedly launched 11/2024.
I haven't used a gimbal yet. I actually don't own one haha but! I'm looking forward to seeing how much it matters to me and whether post stabilization is enough for my video use. I am a big fan of tripods and single AF mode in general, but I've been leaving it in full auto for now to get a feel for how it works and handles 😃 Will definitely be back with a few more x-m5 videos as I learn with it!
Ahh missed that last bit. I did get it from BHP. I pre-ordered it maybe in early November a week after the release I think. And it took a while to come in. It’s an agonizing wait when you’re excited 😂 I think they’re just taking orders and sending them out as they come in
Thank you! When I got the x-m5, I also picked up the viltrox 23mm 1.4 and 56mm 1.7. I haven't gotten to use them too much yet though, as I've been focusing on the kit lens for now 😃
I hope you can make some sort of review of the camera, from a real world use point of view. I'm thinking about buying a ZVE10II as a small companion for travel, hiking, etc, because i already have a Sony full frame camera for photography, an A7RIII. But always I'm looking to the Fuji side. I like Sony and Fuji mostly because size, other systems are BIG, big bodies and big lenses (Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, etc). So maybe i could go the Fuji route.
I totally get that, size was always a big factor for me when looking at cameras too. And I'll definitely be making a full "out of the house" review on it. I just want to make sure I get to use it more and get more familiar with how it handles first 😃
I feel old hearing that the Fx30 is big. It's such a compact camera for what it is. Although I will be getting the fuji xm5, but not for professional work, mainly for fun. My FX30 is a beast when it comes to my professional work and love it! I love how it doesn't bring attention to me at all and people hardly notice it when I'm filming in public. the XM5 will definitely live around my neck for casual family trips and adventures.
haha it's such a good case for relativity, right? The FX30 was the largest camera I've owned and just felt big and noticeable on a travel tripod filming alone in public compared to my phone, go pro or the zv1 I owned. It's obviously an incredible camera and certainly small for the feature set packed in there! 😃
Great video! I used to shoot with a Fuji yearrrrrs ago and always loved it, I’ve been eyeing the x-s20 but x-m5 is an interesting package for sure. One thing I’m forcing myself to do purchase is use the cameras I already have much more, between old GoPro, iPhone pro and a Nikon DSLR, I should make a whole lot more stuff first….if I can’t get that done then do I really need a new camera or just want one?
ahh that's so true. I've made a similar rule for myself this time around. Try it before you buy it...as in.."okay you want to vlog? make 3 vlogs first with your current kit before buying a 'vlog lens' type of thing haha I also don't want to collect stuff I don't use, which is why I've decided to sell a much gear as I could. But yes! Especially as I explore the new kit, I'm keen to chat about it. And, glad you liked the video!
Good video! I'm def getting an XM-5 for street and landscape photography as I just moved to Cusco Peru. Do you think i should skip out on the kit lens and go straight into prime lenses?
Hmm..that's an interesting question. I can't say that I love the kit lens, however...I would say that the kit lens offers a small, very light body for only $100 extra USD if you get the package. If you want that 15-45mm range, shoot more in bright situations and are prioritizing size, weight and cost, I would say it's a great deal to pick up the lens. If you already know what prime focal lengths you like to shoot at and want to prioritize your favorite focal lengths in faster, brighter primes...and keep your kit as small as possible, then you can probably skip it. You could even use the $100 towards your primes of course. I have my two favorite primes (56mm and 23mm) and then this kit lens, and I'm glad I got it. I prefer photos from my primes I think, but I still like having this as a good..."idk what's happening today and it's bright out...I'll take the 15-45" kind of lens. And because I shoot a lot of video in bright outdoors light, a convenient zoom is important to me 😃
the talking head was recorded with the Fujifilm x-m5 and the viltrox 1.4F 23mm lens. A lot of the gear b-roll was filmed with the sony FX30 because I shot it before the camera came in 😃
was considering the XM5 because the price is so great but ultimately went with the Lumix S9. Paying little bit more for Full Frame, Open gate (for social reframing) and MP4lite (smaller file size save hard drive space) is worth the extra cost. Downsides are less third party lenses but depending on your use case + hybrid zoom capability you ca get away with a solid f1.8 prime.
@@PluPerfective The expensives lenses was a real down side BUT I found some used glass on MPB like the 24mm f1.8 for $600 so it evens outs. Sony has too many mediocre 3rd party lens options.
@@Fredo.heavyy not too bad but I guess as a first time camera buyer it’s a bit over my budget. Maybe when I learn more I can put money into it - thanks for the response mate
Gear just does Matter I get what they are saying tho. I mean I have an fx3 I use a ton for certain reasons . But I’m looking at the Fuji xm5 and the Sony a6700 . If I had either of those tiny cameras I would say I’d use it a lot more just because I’d have it with me everywhere I go
I totally agree 😃 which is why I think that statement should always be nuanced. That's actually one of the areas where I think gear really matters--how likely you are to take it out and use it (and why). I was just focusing more on my unnecessarily pixel peeping past self during that part haha
@@Aj_Thecinematographer honestly, I think most cameras will overheat if you stress them enough. There are peltier coolers for cameras that can keep them cool and don't really break the bank.
I sold all the old gear for a good price, which paid for the new gear, but I didn't actually calculate it. It's a bit of a sunken cost fallacy at this point...the gear is less useful if I don't feel comfortable using it haha
You made some excellent points regarding your choice to go with the fuji..but let's be honest, the true reason behind it has got to be the fact that fuji cameras are just so damn pretty to look at 😁
ah I had the ZV-1, the non-interchangeable lens system. I think the motor in the zoom went bad, but at that point I was ready for a body with more manual control buttons!
@@Iamquiroga no worries! For a moment, i wondered if maybe I said it wrong as well. I hope you enjoy the new zv-e1 though 😃 and thank you. Glad you liked the video 😄
I'm confused between zv e10 og n zv e10 mark 2 vs fuji xm5 Xm5 and zv e10 ii cost same body only at 900 dollars or should save money n get og zv e10 Will mostly use it for video
hmm...it's hard to say. All three cameras are great. You'll be able to get good video from all of them. The xm5 and zv e10 ii can produce a slightly better image in my opinion. However, if you buy the cheaper zv e10 you can either save the extra money or use that extra money to buy another lens. I don't think you'll be disappointed in any of them. Each camera just offers a slightly different set of priorities I think 😃
It has some great specs at this pricepoint. But it is waaaaay to small for my liking. It looks great, but I handled it in the store and you have to have tiny hands or use extra grips/cages to make ergonomics better. The dial on front will get nudged way to often. Shame it has no weather sealing, IBIS or EVF, but I think it would only make the price go up. It will appeal to many as a EDC. I think it will suit lots of people for recording their lives. Have fun with this little monster!
Seriously, the ergonomics alone aren't great. I have small hands, and it would have felt pretty unusable without the grips I got. But it does make a great little EDC like you said. Excited to be learning more about it! 😃
Thank you for the heads up. It's been a learning curve in general switching to fuji menus and controls. It definitely doesn't manual focus like my sigma lenses did 😂 but I'll have to pay more attention as I use it more!
I had ZVE1 & GH5ii, like you i believed good camera will result good footage. I was wrong. It is my skill and knowledge will give such result. Most of the features in those cameras i had never used. Now i have crippled myself with just ZV1 II. Learning this camera and improve my knowledge. I also love XM5 but i know i’m not ready yet. 😅
ah, I totally understand! Wishing you the best as you learn and build up your skills too 🙌 The x-m5 and more cameras will be here when you feel ready to upgrade 😃
@@Mraz75 how was the ZV-E1. I considered it briefly, before making a purchase on an FX30. ZV-E1 has the same sensor as the FX3, with thermal and SD card limitations.
@ it was a very good cinema camera. I love its stabilisation. Yes there is some jerkiness when you move from left to right or vice versa. But if you standing standstill doing dynamic active stab, it is like as if you hold it on a tripod. I have paired it with lenses like 28-60mm, 50mm, 16-35mm f4, 20-70mm f4 and 24-50mm f2.8. The camera never overheat on me. It is a great camera. I usually shoot for 20 second up to 5 minutes interviews and there is no issue. I sold it because it is too heavy to carry around for city round or walking in a park. Especially when i was carrying 24-50mm f2.8 with smallrig cage. It was about 1.1 KG. Owh the lens is still bulky when you want an 2.8 or wide zoom range. The smallest is 28-60mm and 50mm f1.8 for ZVE1. Both or them are light to bring around. Honestly i brought 28-60mm to Kashmir and after a long on my neck strap the camera and lenses still feel heavy. It is the issue of bulkiness for me that i opted for ZV-1 II. I’m just a small Asian guy. One more thing, it is high in video spec which i did not use or need. I didn’t use 10bits codec and SLOG profile. It was too much for me. Plus you needed a high processor computer and expensive V90 memory cards. So these were the reasons why i sold my ZVE1.
I got a used XT3 830 shutter on ebay for 730$ like new . I will seat on XT3 for a while. I like the XM5 design and spec, but I love fuji for classic design and retro field. XT series make Fuji popular around the world. just my opinion.

And because I shoot a lot of video in bright outdoors light, a convenient zoom is important to me 😃
@afternoon_coffeehouse awesome thanks so much for the great advice 😊
what camera is this video recorded with? it looks amazing
the talking head was recorded with the Fujifilm x-m5 and the viltrox 1.4F 23mm lens. A lot of the gear b-roll was filmed with the sony FX30 because I shot it before the camera came in 😃
@ oh nice
was considering the XM5 because the price is so great but ultimately went with the Lumix S9.
Paying little bit more for Full Frame, Open gate (for social reframing) and MP4lite (smaller file size save hard drive space) is worth the extra cost.
Downsides are less third party lenses but depending on your use case + hybrid zoom capability you ca get away with a solid f1.8 prime.
@@Fredo.heavyy what lens you’ll get with the s9 and for how much? Lens are the reason I decided not to bother with LUMIX
Thanks for sharing your journey. Fujifilm has a lot to offer. I’ve been shooting with it for 10 years. 🎉
@@JackieDElia thank you! Super excited to keep growing with Fuji 😃
Gear just does Matter I get what they are saying tho. I mean I have an fx3 I use a ton for certain reasons . But I’m looking at the Fuji xm5 and the Sony a6700 . If I had either of those tiny cameras I would say I’d use it a lot more just because I’d have it with me everywhere I go
Overheating issues a6700
I totally agree 😃 which is why I think that statement should always be nuanced.
I’m assuming this was shot on our beloved XM5?
it was haha
@ had that feeling just wanted to feel good about saying the video quality looked great 😊
I a, considering this camera. I retired from full time photography and want something smaller as an every day carry
How much money you lost switching between systems?
I sold all the old gear for a good price, which paid for the new gear, but I didn't actually calculate it. It's a bit of a sunken cost fallacy at this point...the gear is less useful if I don't feel comfortable using it haha
You made some excellent points regarding your choice to go with the fuji..but let's be honest, the true reason behind it has got to be the fact that fuji cameras are just so damn pretty to look at 😁
can't really argue with that 🫣
Do you know how your ZV-E1 died? Why did you decide not to get it again? I just got one that's why i ask lol
ah I had the ZV-1, the non-interchangeable lens system. I think the motor in the zoom went bad, but at that point I was ready for a body with more manual control buttons!
@@afternoon_coffee_house I misheard, sorry! Great video, by the way!
@@Iamquiroga no worries! For a moment, i wondered if maybe I said it wrong as well. I hope you enjoy the new zv-e1 though 😃 and thank you. Glad you liked the video 😄
I'm confused between zv e10 og n zv e10 mark 2 vs fuji xm5
Xm5 and zv e10 ii cost same body only at 900 dollars or should save money n get og zv e10
Will mostly use it for video
hmm...it's hard to say.
Great video! Just know the manual focus on the kit lens is kings finicky. At least to me!
@ yes will learn from your experience.. glad to find your channel.
Great advice with that last line
Great Video! I am coming from Photography and slowly learning video making. I agree the content is more important than hardware... I am also struglying with large camera gear (camera, lens, filter, mic,,,,etc..) and carrying around all sometimes make me lazy to catch some nice video. For this I always have in my luggage a Canon Powershot S120 for photo and a DJI Pocket 2 for video.... at least i am prepared to every opportunity😀 thanks again for inspiration. Ciao
Ah, no kidding! I actually paired the x-m5 with the pocket 3 myself too 😃 I think they make a great pair so far, though I'm still learning a lot about both cameras. Glad that duo has worked out for you too!
@@afternoon_coffee_house yes! at the end i am too lazy to carry every heavy and expensive gear with me.... it is just to capture the right moment in the life. Happy new Year to you😀
@@movievox61 Totally get it! Happy New Year! 😃

Great video 🙏🏻👏
Thank you! 🙏
Nikon Z30 is a similar camera and X-Mount lenses can be adapted on it
Love this new channel just subbed…. please do check that your home page when opening from a phone doesn’t show any videos idk why but i think you need to check..
ah thank you for the heads up! I have no idea why it's doing that. I'll have to see if there is a setting somewhere toggled that shouldn't be. But glad you're enjoying the new channel 😃
Downgraded? “Downgrade”rom almost any Sony camera is always a good thing for a person who understands photography and escapes Sony’s marketing trap.
haha I've gone back and forth between "downgrade" and "upgrade" for the video title. I can see the argument both ways, which made it tough to decide
Love the video!
Avoid the Viltrox 1.4 (worst AF lenses for Fuji by far).
oh no, the 23mm? I already got that one, though I haven't really struggled with it in my use case so far. I'll have to pay attention going forward if it's particularly finicky!
@ yes, the trio f1.4 23/33/56. Are the worst from Viltrox and the whole AF lenses line up for Fuji. Lack of contrast, chromatic aberrations at their highest… It’s a pity because apart from those 3, Viltrox have launched very good lenses.
ah no kidding. I've enjoyed it so far, but it's still quite new to me. I'll have to see what I notice. I noticed the 1.7f 56mm from viltrox struggled a lot in low light. But, I still need more time with them. thanks for the heads up 😃
@@TungstenOvergaard
What about the 1.7s? Am really interested in those. I personally picked up the Sirui sniper lenses since I film a lot of parties with low light.
@ the 56mm is amazing for the price. 35mm everybody is talking very well, and looks clear is better image quality compared with 35 f2 from Fuji.
You could have bought a 2nd hand XT3. The XM5 feels cheap and flimsy……no evf.
Yeah, there is definitely a lot of competition around. I think the x-m5 was better for my use case, but I do agree that the plastic-y body feels flimsy. It's something I'll be talking about when I actually review it.
@@afternoon_coffee_house get a cage or it, well it's up to you, but smallrig has two awesome cages for it that may make it feel more premium.
