Thank you, Edvard, for working these issues out and make them public in a very clear and transparent way. Damn this guy is so right in criticizing the firmwares and the team behind AF. Much needed. Someone needs to say this. For a camera to cost 1000+ dollars and not have a working video AF system (which is basic) is unacceptable. Especially when much cheaper and smaller cameras are waaaaay better than this. Coming from a Fuji user. (XE4 -35mm)
It's so weird that we need to point this out. Strange times we live in, where people will sacrifice their belongings and reputation for billion dollar companies that don't give a flying damn about them.
@@SunGee-db3yp it's not strange time as it happens in any point of history. Some people are just more 'loyal' than being functional. We are just in point of time where people can be vocal and heard at any time, just need to post a video or type a comment
To be honest, workable video AF isn‘t basic at all. Canon made it work as the first one. Sony followed, then Nikon and Olympus and very recently Panasonic. It is a very new thing compared to stills AF. Only as of last year it became a new industry standard and Fuji needs to work on that to join the new standard.
@@iursingh So why is Panasonic only since the S5 II competitive? You can very well make the argument that your X-E4 focuses like the Pana GH6, a video powerhouse from 2022. It is not that general. I get your point though, I just disagree that it is basic. Manufacturers struggled for many years with video AF. Once you figure it out, you are save for the future, and I think Fuji is on the brink to figure it out but hasn‘t yet. We‘ll see.
Almost went back to an XH2S for my videography work and content creation. Was tempted by an a6700, bought it and never thought of Fujifilm back again. Never been happier with a camera ever like I am with my A6700.
I noticed the same thing that Peck was talking about on the other Camera Conspiracies channel. He had some string lights in the background and it was SUPER obvious when the focus changes. The step changes seem super amplified when their bright little bokeh balls are changing size all the time.
This was absolutely amazing! Man you did the job of a massive QC team sitting in Fuji's software qc department and showed them how to do their job. They are very incompetent people sitting there and have no clue on what they're doind. Fuji Looks like a big company with too much berucracy and a lot of meetings and no one doing the actual job and caring about the final product (at least in the af department) Fuji should hire you and put you as the lead autofocus department there. You know what you want and it's up to the engineers to deliver.
Excellent analysis, very thorough. I’ve owned Fuji since the original X100 in 2010, and you’ve just covered the sum total of my experiences with Fuji AF in 20 minutes. I now own the X-H2S and a dozen lenses or more, and I agree it’s not the lenses, it’s the firmware.

Grateful that you are making these videos! I have been using Fujifilm since 2018 and love the system. That is the exact reason why I think this is so important in order to make Fujifilm push the boundaries and become a better version of themselves! Everyone wins! However, it is clear to me now after posting your Part 1 video on the X-H2S FB page that there are many users out there who simply do not get the point and has the mentality of "nah ah, I don't see any problems here, I am not having any trouble, this is great, great, great! How dare you question Fujifilm's performance, clearly you don't know how to use the camera properly!". I love that they all jump to negative assumptions, as if someone was questioning the loyalty of their wife or something - which absolutely isn't an analogy that sits well with this situation at all. Well, thanks to the people who dare question a company's performance and not act like mindless yes-nodding-dolls, are the ones that make sure that a company gets the heat up to actually change things for the BETTER. For the greater good, keep doing what you are doing, Edvard. I am so disappointed in the Fujifilm community (not the entire community obviously, but an alarmingly bigger chunk then I imagined of it)!
It's the same on Fujirumors and other forums. But they will eventually come to their senses. This childish behavior was already noticeable 7 months ago and now it is confirmed that Fuji broke their firmware.
Great job, I wish Fujifilm would see your film and take a look at it. If they hired someone like you for beta testing, maybe they wouldn't release faulty firmware.
@@E3Zombie it happens to me too. I'm trying to move my focus from the subjective sensation of using a tool to the image I see in my mind when taking a photo. I fully understand your point and in the next months I would maybe sell the Sony for the same reason, but I don't know, I want to try it first
I agree this is incompetence on Fujifilm’s part. They must have the worst beta testing program ever created. I can’t see how this software made it out of alpha testing let alone beta. They’ve gotten to the point where they have just too many moving software parts and they’re pulling levers, hoping that some combination will fix everything. The problem is every time you introduce new code you have to go back and test everything to make sure that it is not affecting other functions.

The fact you think it is software and not hardware REALLY fills me with hope. I was beginning to think long term I cannot stay with Fujifilm because no matter what next thing comes out next its never going to catch properly up due to bad mount/hardware decision made early on. I genuinely believe Fujifilm are watching you now (how could they not be, only specific bugs YOU reported have been addressed in 7.1), so lets hope they have thick skin, can take a roasting but also have a pen and paper and are taking notes. Let's hope they can apply your findings in future f/w or at the very least future models.
It's a pity you have only 3k subs audience. Your videos are really eyes opening. Big thumbs up for your work. However, the community of Fujifilm users should finally find the way to put those findings on Yuji Igarashi's table, because I suppose nobody in Fujifilm HQ watch youtube videos in english and youtube's algorithm doesn't serve your videos to them. Otherwise I cannot understand how company is not reacting to such roasting for such a long period of time. It's simply self-disrepect for them.
Thank you yet again for the hardwork! You showed enough evidence of where the root cause is and how to reproduce it, just hoping Fujifilm can work as hard as you and implement a proper fix once and for all. And a proper fix for all cameras from X-T3 and up.
Thank you very much for your time and effort. Constructive criticism like yours is greatly appreciated. I hope Fujifilm takes note. I only do photography, and I’m delighted with it, but you’re right that a top-tier camera like the X-H2 still has these “basic” flaws. Hopefully, they’ll listen and adjust the trajectory of the AF.
I think hardware capability (processor) plays a significant role too, not only software. Fujifilm X-Trans sensor is probably much more demanding to process. And I suspect, taking X-H2s as example, when Fuji tried to increase AI features (subject detection etc.) in later firmwares, they shifted a lot of processing power from autofocus to AI, thus handicapping aufofocus further. I don't think Fujifilm can improve autofocus much further, till they introduce a much more powerful processor and phase detection autofocus.
True just like Sony did when they hired Nikon’s main lens engineer, then Sony launched their GM lens series which has been dominating in terms of new optical formulas, sharpness and weight.
Unfortunately, it probably is the case that Fuji's initial development team who got Fuji to their peak performing AF probably left to join Nikon or Panasonic. Those two companies have improved their AF substantially over the last 4 years. This probably left Fuji with the skeleton team.
Incredible video, I truly hope Fujifilm will sort this out fast because I'm actually against my wishes am forced to reconsider staying in this eco system. I don't honestly know how FujiFilm has gotten worse and worse year after year. I don't want to sell my gear but I just can't rely on them for my business and it's too much headaches since they broke the firmwares. I have like you the T-3 and X-H2s, and a few others, but unlike you I don't have the old firmware. The least they could do is offer us an option of downgrading to a working firmware. Great video brother, I'm a fan !
The question is: why doesn't Fujifilm do this kind of testing before releasing a firmware? It seems incredible, absurd, that every time it's the users who notice the bugs. Since there is no working firmware for the X-T4 I will be forced to sell it.
@@edvard2942 And anyway, I too am sad to have a Fuji that doesn't work. I love the body, I love the files, I love the screen and the viewfinder. Buying an A6700 with a single SD slot, with a poor viewfinder, with fewer controls and with the bother of shooting in RAW and always working in post, I don't like it at all.
There goes X-T3 prices through the roof, thanks a lot Edvard!! ;-) The main problem I have with the AF was that the camera shows the green square on the subject, but the subject was out of focus in the final photo, and on a small screen you have to zoom in to confirm, a waste of time, this is for stills photography. I recently bought a 56mm F/1.2 R WR, and upgraded firmware at the same time, and I could feel the lens continuously hunt in a hard fixed stepping motion rather than smooth transition. I thought there was something wrong with the lens, but now I see that there isn't. I love the images that come out of the X-H2s with various lenses, but I cannot use AF for paid work. I would rather use the GFX system, it is slow but at least it never misses, and the lens AF doesn't hunt and jump like it's on crack.
Thank you for this big work Edvard. I was waiting for this update to know if I upgrade my xt3 with the xh2s but I will stay with my xt3 downgraded to the FW 3.1. I would love to see Fuji sort this issue because like you I have few good lenses and I love the Fuji Colors and use of my xt3. Cross fingers but I am not very optimistic. I am afraid Fuji will loose many customers with this problem.
Wow, I'm just puzzled that the focus system actually worked. But as you said, if the underlying issues are fixed, it could be a fantastic and reliable autofocus again. Maybe they should just throw away the contrast detection part of the code and only focus on phase AF.
Interesting video. I upgraded to fw 4 on my XT3 because it was supposed to have greatly improved the autofocus. I use single point rather than continuous autofocus. It seems to work fairly well when the subject is well lit. I understand from your excellent video that it is not worthwhile upgrading to the latest firmware.
That's why the XH1 is the only Fuji I still own. I never thought it was perfect, but it looks a lot better than this. I had an XS20 but sold it a little after 1 month since the focus was very bad.
Kaizen is dead especially for lesser series. Even X-T5 got demoted to 2nd class now. I don't even have any expectations anymore for any sort of fix for X-T4 (or even X-T3)
"Top notch autofocus" I guess I'm staying on 5.11 then - I only use multi because face detection tends to detect faces everywhere but on the main face. Thanks for the hard testing work Edvard!
It's such a shame... i love everything about my X-T4 but AF. And with release of new platform, it probably will never get fixed. If they could at least give us some frankenstein X-T3 v3 + X-T4 firmware. Seriously fire entire AF department, it would be better if they did nothing for the last 5 years.
excellent work you put into that video. Got the X-H2S and am struggling. Being a "fanboy" of the ergonomics (old school dials) and picture quality - I find myself looking for other brands. Sony in particular. Fuji: get it fixed please.
Those who object to this video are pure fanboys. The more who show the issues of AF on Fuji's, the more pressure Fuji will be under to finally get their act together and give AF that is as reliable and user friendly as other brands. If not, users who buy into the system, then gets dissapointed, and then told they are the problem, will leave the system for good and so then later, Fuji stops making cameras
A real fanboy wants Fuji to succeed and to do that they need a great and reliable autofocus. So anyone who neglects the obvious issues isn't a real fanboy. 🤷♂
I cant believe they dont know about this before they release. This is a camera company that releases firmware with obscure fixes for all sorts of things all the time. The focus issue is not an "obscure" problem, it's obvious. So they know about it but dont know how to fix it and keep quiet. Which is pretty shocking really. Not because companies dont do this (they do this all the time). But because we see Fujifilm as pretty good technically. It's not a cheap camera company. So the fact they cant do this basic stuff in 2024 whereas every other camera company has nailed it (Panasonic, Canon, Sony and Nikon) makes you think the whole framework they have been building these camera firmwares on is flawed. And the only real fix is a completely rewritten firmware. Which will take years. But they cant say that. CAF tracking on any image is a fixed issue in the tech world. I'm sure there are opebn source C++ libraries all over the place that can do it. No one else has a big problem with it but Fujifilm. The funny thing is, when I tried a GH7 with my old as hell, 20mm f1.7 m43 lens, CAF was perfect! And that has one of the loudest and slowest motors around. So it's never been any lens that stops this working. It's always software. This is crazy from Fujifilm. You cant charge £2.5K for these cameras lol. Not for video work in 2024.
Thank you so much for your call out with the existing problem. Seems like AF still works mostly on contrast detection, which is very very bad. I upgrade to firmware 7.10 the first hour it was released and test it out. I can live with that but not impress and always waiting for your video to point out the problem that I or another people have not seen. I hope Fujifilm saw your video. You know Corpo always has first priority to fix problem which was mostly call out by an social media influencer, which is also sad. Ps. I think I should downgrade my X-T3 to firmware 3!
I wanted to buy the xt3 but i think i will keep my xpro2 for longer, even if it doesn t have all the features of more modern cameras ,but i think the autofocus on xpro2,xt2,xt20 ,xe2 was perfect for what it was...one big problem that i encountered all the time was the worming efect on all fujifilm cameras, even using iridient or capture onr didn t change much. Nice video! And thanks for pure information and solid facts about the problems you encounter with fujifilm gear
Thanks for this video. Can’t make it any clearer how broken the Fuji AF is. I’m five years, two bodies and nine lenses into the ecosystem but no more. Can’t afford to jump to Sony at this time, and it’s such a shame given the pleasing look and ergonomics of Fuji cameras, but working AF is non-negotiable.
AF was the main reason I have sold my Fuji. I liked the ergonomics and the Fuji picture science. But the AF was so frustrating, I was completaly fed up.I have switched to another brand and gues what? I am happy. If they solve the AF problem and it will remain useable for other 2 or 3 firmware updates I will get back to Fuji.
I now need to check where my firmware is on my xt3. I use the sigma 18-35 for video and I really don't see these issues and I usually use Multi. Maybe it's a good thing I haven't upgraded yet. Might test it for myself to see haha! Thanks for these videos.
I think this is enough and we need no more review about Fujifilm AF. Let's see how they will handle this serious problem they have made. Btw, thanks very much for your effort to make these reviews.
I mean this video is more than enough for us and Fujifilm to understand what is happening to the AF system. Unless other reviewers can find out something new, more videos about Fujifilm AF make no sense from now on, TBH.
Multi seem to focus better than xh2s on xt2 when subject has less contrast than background 💀. Seems like new firmwares use mainly contrast points, not phase ones. This whole situation reminds me of the X-TRANS 1 where there were no phase points whatsoever I use xt2 and it’s AF buggs me but when I saw Fuji’s new stuff, I appreciated xt2 more.
Funny, X-T3 version 3.0 was so exciting at the time with the “finally fixed” autofocus, well it wasn’t and 5 years later still isn’t lol. I remember trying to record a podcast with 3.0 and it focus pulsed maybe 3-4 times in the space of a 30 minute video, unusable :(
Great couple of videos, you went really in depth on the investigation. I'm still on an X-T2 and use it for photography, however I share similar sentiment with you regarding firmware upgrades leading to autofocus downgrades. In my experience, using the autofocus on S mode, on single point mode (don't bother with face or eye, I think it was never performant enough on the X-T2) I find that even though the camera confirms focus with the "green box" or beep sound, occasionally images do come out out-of-focus, this appears started to happen after the firmware upgrades but I'm not sure exactly which one. Now you could blame this on user error, ( ok fujifan boy 😉) but in the out-of-focus images I struggle to find any planes in focus, it's like its focused on the extremes either infinity or the the min focusing distance where nothing in the frame is in focus. Anyway just sharing here in-case it helps you with your investigation or if anyone else has experienced anything similar?
I think this is the core problem why fujifilm cameras have bad autofocus. The flying eye , hand detection were nothing compared to this.

@@thomashill5768 I google searched “Softpedia fujifilm xt3 firmware update 3.00” and I also download the an application called “Hex Fiend” on my computer.
Once you download the file for the update. You open hex fiend and drag and drop that firmware file and a bunch of code should appear.
Do you know where we can find the Firmware 3.0 or 3.2? thanks!
@@thomashill5768 edvard posted a video about it 4 months ago, that same information worked on my xt3.
There’s somewhere in the code where it’ll look like “030000 000000” indicating it is firmware 3.00. You’ll want to change the code to something higher than your current camera firmware.
My xt3 was on 5.10 and I want to change the code to where the camera will want to upgrade to 5.11. Modified code should be something like “050000 110000”
Thank you, Edvard, for working these issues out and make them public in a very clear and transparent way. It is important to hold a company accountable for worsening the features with firmware update. It's a shame for Fujifilm, which always propagates "Kaizen" Updates and doing the opposite. Also the communication about these issues are totally a total mess. I hope they will finally get their things together and fix these problems as soon as possible. Otherwise, they will lose lots of customers, me included.
Absolutely mental what the video shows. Thank you for your efforts and tests.
Sold my X-T5 2 weeks ago. Not just because of autofocus but a bug reason…. I paid good money for a modern camera with features and they should work
Which bug? Please share! I'm looking to recommend XT5 to my friend.

Maybe now you've discovered where it all went wrong, Fujifilm can go back and rehire the devs from back then

@@andreasbuder4417 My fuji XE4 focuses like a camera from 2012.
So no, its not that new, it has been very basic for many years now.
Fuji Looks like a big company with too much berucracy and a lot of meetings and no one doing the actual job and caring about the final product (at least in the af department)
Fuji should hire you and put you as the lead autofocus department there.
I'm selling X-T3 with fw 3.3 for $1500.
Better AF than any of the latest Fujifilm camera
/JK. I'm keep this baby as the Legendary camera that outperform even 2 generations after
Grateful that you are making these videos!
I guess that's how they get to improved the battery life. They reduce the processing power that drives the motor and only uses contrast detection 😀
This might be actually true 🤦♂
Great job, I wish Fujifilm would see your film and take a look at it.
If they hired someone like you for beta testing, maybe they wouldn't release faulty firmware.

I fully understand your point and in the next months I would maybe sell the Sony for the same reason, but I don't know, I want to try it first
Bravo pour ton travail Edvard ! Continue !

These are good videos, I hope Fujifilm is watching 👌
I will only say.. Fujifilm CEO - mr. Goto should watch this video every single day in the morning, before he will go out to work :)
"Are you impressed?" - Actually I am! How's this still possible is mind blowing. Good work - on your side, not Fujifilm though (sadly).
Yes bro do a part three. You're not ready
That was a bloody good demonstration of CDAF and PDAF!!!
Great video. Lets wait for those non technical guys saying it is your skill.
Fuji should just hire Sony autofocus engineers, before everyone jumps ship.
Good work. Thank you Edvard, for this! 👍🏻🤗
Very detailed information and analysis of the AF zaga good job! just subscribed
That you Edvard for your work and effort.
The question is: why doesn't Fujifilm do this kind of testing before releasing a firmware? It seems incredible, absurd, that every time it's the users who notice the bugs.
Since there is no working firmware for the X-T4 I will be forced to sell it.
@@Probabilmente million dollar question
Thanks, really appreciate the analysis. Still waiting for Fujifilm to fix my X-H2S.
That's why the XH1 is the only Fuji I still own. I never thought it was perfect, but it looks a lot better than this. I had an XS20 but sold it a little after 1 month since the focus was very bad.

Keep up the real work Edvard. You are the real Fuji fanboy. Also Fuji please give AF updates to XS10. #Kaizen
Kaizen is dead especially for lesser series. Even X-T5 got demoted to 2nd class now. I don't even have any expectations anymore for any sort of fix for X-T4 (or even X-T3)

100% Whoevers in charge of AF should be fired.
This is the point where Fujifilm should actually start paying you for doing their job

excellent work you put into that video. Got the X-H2S and am struggling. Being a "fanboy" of the ergonomics (old school dials) and picture quality - I find myself looking for other brands. Sony in particular. Fuji: get it fixed please.
Weldone and thanks for this deep test....Fuji should correct all this ,else we will move on
Those who object to this video are pure fanboys.
Not for video work in 2024.
felt lucky for keeping my beloved xt3

Can’t afford to jump to Sony at this time, and it’s such a shame given the pleasing look and ergonomics of Fuji cameras, but working AF is non-negotiable.
great tests, really nothing to critisize here. Hopefully fujifilm sees that and fixes
"I convinced you. No? Okay..." 🤣 Best Part.
Wouldn't it be possible to organize a petition or create an email template to send en masse to Fuji? Haha, that would be the best thing to do
I now need to check where my firmware is on my xt3.
If we don't have more videos on this Fuji will simply ignore the problem, the more people complain the more likely Fuji are to do something.
I mean this video is more than enough for us and Fujifilm to understand what is happening to the AF system. Unless other reviewers can find out something new, more videos about Fujifilm AF make no sense from now on, TBH.
I switched to Fuji for the ergonomics and the film simulation recipes. What's the point of having that if I can't get a reliable autofocus?
Bravo din nou!🎉
Where can I download firmware version 3.0? Thank you for your help.
Multi seem to focus better than xh2s on xt2 when subject has less contrast than background 💀. Seems like new firmwares use mainly contrast points, not phase ones. This whole situation reminds me of the X-TRANS 1 where there were no phase points whatsoever
I use xt2 and it’s AF buggs me but when I saw Fuji’s new stuff, I appreciated xt2 more.
its kinda like they downgraded from a machine gun to a revolver
Every time i think about going to fuji i watch your videos and say nah!!

Funny, X-T3 version 3.0 was so exciting at the time with the “finally fixed” autofocus, well it wasn’t and 5 years later still isn’t lol. I remember trying to record a podcast with 3.0 and it focus pulsed maybe 3-4 times in the space of a 30 minute video, unusable :(
Sold my XT-5 for a Lumix S5II - loved fuji color science but best decision ever. Thanks for keeping them accountable

Sadly kaizen dies after new CEO comes
Doing god's work here. Hopefully fuji listens
Great video. Thanks for the hard work
Great couple of videos, you went really in depth on the investigation.
