I so loved this one. In fact I will listen again. Taking notes. Having conversations with non catholics about this can be frustrating. What's even more so, are the one's who used to be catholic! The catholic faith is so misunderstood by many. It's mind numbing what other denominations think we believe. I'm praying for you... for all of us 🙏
Hi Sandi. Yes, it is frustrating & I used to be one of those bringing out the old Protestant tropes.😄Don’t give up. You never know what little fire you might start with your faithful witness.🙏❤️
When my nephew approached me and asked me why we worshipped false gods(statues), and why we worship the antichrist etc etc etc it absolutely blew my mind! Right now he is tangled up, I am afraid to say, in the occult. It is driven by fear, misunderstanding, drugs and outright evil. I pray for him, Clyde, and all of my brothers and sisters who are duped by evil. Lord, I beseech You, for I know that if it affects us this way, it truly affects You much deeper. My Jesus Mercy. 🙏❤️🙏❤️🙏
Day 140 *Purgatory* My heart doesn't love God the way He should be loved. I love God's gifts a lot and his creatures as well. But I don't know if I love the creator the way he deserves to be loved. And so Purgatory is that place where not only our worldly attachments are purified but *our hearts are made capable of loving God the way he is meant to be loved* . This is supposed to happen in this life. But if it doesn't happen in this life, then God gives us this incredible opportunity to have it happen in Purgatory Oh the mercy of God ❤️
As a convert, I did not realize that I was still harboring some Protestant concepts. Lots of people would tease me about being a goody goody, and to fit in, to deflect that, I would quip, "Hey, I am no saint." I had bought into this, I can be covered by Christ, and basically say, but hey I'm not perfect, and shrug off my little inconsistencies and bad habits. It has taken me many years as a Catholic to finally say, I am a saint in the making. To recognize I can't just slide by, or feel bad or embarrassed that I am trying to be like Christ. Sure I am not perfect, but I am to be perfecting my heart with the help of church and Christ. I am supposed to be a saint (that is the goal God intends) not just shrug it off as too hard to be, or a silly idea that I could be so good; it is after all what Jesus wants for me. I might not ever get there to that level closeness to Jesus, in this lifetime ( I hope so), but I am going to fight hard, really hard to do the next right thing, and really let God teach me. When I fail, I will just get up and take the hand of JEsus and start over again. It's a journey. Maybe you have felt this way too.
I have absolutely felt all that you express! I’m a convert too; it’s only been in the last few years that I started taking my commitment to Christ & the Church seriously. Almost a year ago I started praying the Liturgy of the Hours; when I found out it’s the prayer of the Church. I didn’t pray the rosary & very few written prayers. I still thought extemporaneous prayer was the best prayer. I started praying the LotH intentionally 4 times a day. Since then I’ve added the rosary, the Divine Mercy chaplet & novenas. I’m working on doing a Consecration to Mary soon. Right now I’m praying the Novena to the Holy Spirit & finishing a Novena to St. Rita, my confirmation saint. My interior life has exploded 💥💥💥 God is so GOOD! I want to be a saint! I have a long way to go, but I know through God’ love & mercy & the gift of perseverance I will make it.🙏❤️Hopefully I won’t have to spend too much time in Purgatory 😳😄
@@TrixRN - I'm a revert. I found about the Liturgy of the Hours maybe about 2 years ago?? They need more advertising for that one. I have been doing the hinge offices off and and on for the last few months. If you have not found him, Paul Rose of "Sing the Hours" does really great content. It's really helped me in many ways. And yes, I'm looking to lighten the load in Purgatory, too. God is very good!
@@atrifle8364 I found Sing the Hours, but decided against using a video; I spend WAY too much time on TH-cam as it is😆Instead I use an app, Divine Office, & set the alarm in it to go off at morning, midday, evening, & night prayers. So no matter what I’m doing on YT I switch over to the app & pray. It recites the prayers & readings & sings the hymns. It has a cool feature where you can look at the globe & see how many people are using the app when you are. With morning prayer I also pray the Invitatory & listen to the Office of Readings.
@@atrifle8364 Amen to all of the above. I am a lifelong catholic and still learning. I pray and search for more priests like Fr Mike. I started reading the writings of Pope Francis. He is incredibly misunderstood, misquoted, misinterpreted and targeted intentionally with evil misinformation. Grrr. For the intentions of Pope Francis, Fr Mike and all priests and religious may they proclaim the Gospel in Truth through Christ Our Lord. Amen. 🙏❤️🙏
Purgatory is a state of those who die in God’s friendship, assured of their eternal salvation, but who still have need to purification to enter into the happiness of heaven. We can help these poor souls by almsgiving, indulgences, and works of penance. Hell consists in the eternal damnation of those who die in mortal sin through their own free choice. Lord, I ask you for your grace and mercy. Give me a contrite heart of true repentance. 🙏
And please, Lord, I, too ask for your grace and mercy. Please give me a contrite heart of true repentance, and help me to persevere in it until my death, and beyond...
Holy God, our beautiful Lord, please bring back my family and others who are lost from you. Let them know of you and have you in the center of their lives and relationships. Amen.
And my sister, her family, and my aunts and cousins. Prayers for everyone here. Lord, trust in your mercy. Please let what I am going through be my purgatory now! ❤😢
Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. ❤🙏❤ 1 Peter 1:6-7 In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7 These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith-of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire-may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.
Father, may everything that I do this day, whether it be full of joy or pain, whether it be full of love or of grief, I ask that everything I go through today be offered to you just like Jesus offered everything to you. It is in his name we pray. Amen. 5/20/2023
Hello and I will be going to the Sat. vigil mass with my son. We have a terrible forest fire going on here so I will have to recheck and make sure the road to get there is still open. 🙏
@@dianefrank3688Ooh, Diane be careful.😳We’ve had so much rain I don’t know if a fire would stay lit.😁 I know one year (years & years ago) we had really bad fires all through east Texas. It was a really dry year. I had a cousin who lived in the area & a mandatory evacuation was called. He made the news because he was out fighting the fire to save his house. He was actually able to fight it enough to keep the fire from getting too close. We all fussed at him because he could’ve died.😳

Dear Lord, Accept my prayers, today, for all my deceased family, friends and all the poor souls in purgatory. In Jesus Name🙏🏻 Bless Fr. Mike and all my brothers & Sisters in Christ. Send your blessings on all who have strayed & bring them home to you, Especially my children. In Jesus name. Amen
Oh, Lord, meet me in my brokenness, meet me in my sin, always call me back to you, teach me to make good, honest confessions, I want to choose Heaven. Teach me how to treat each person in my life with more and more love. With Your love, dear Lord, and teach me also to love myself, and my neighbor, to desire and work for what is right for everyone in my sphere of influence, one person at a time. And I pray for everyone, and thank you for Fr. Mike.
This was so good and helpful! As a Protestant, depravity doctrine, never felt right to me. However, for me, the message that, no matter what I ever did, God still loved me (this is true BUT we should see transformation) made me only want to know and love God more…it drew me to God because I had been forgiven much. I wanted to be more like Jesus. Somehow, I think Martin Luther needed to KNOW that he could “rest” in God’s love. We ALL need to know that we can “rest” in God’s love for he is unchanging. Like the “Little Flower” encourages, “Run to God when you sin!” He will take you up in His arms! ♥️
Amen!! I pray for unity amongst us all. I think that Martin Luther tried to fix things in the catholic church that needed fixing, and I appreciate that, but I hate that he left the church. ❤️🙏❤️
Thank you Lord for your love and mercy, grant us the grace to continue to turn to You for your merciful forgiveness for rejecting Your Love through our sinfulness, Amen

I believe both Luther and Calvin were trained as lawyers, thus the attraction of "imputing" righteousness. This episode is an excellent addressing parts of the Protestant framework. Really wonderful, thanks!

I suspect the most consistent thing about life has to be its inconsistency. Don't all of us live with a fear of the unknown? It's this eerie inconsistency that keeps all of us living on the edges of our chairs. Yet it was in this inconsistency that God had His finest hour. Never did the good in the world so intertwine with the bad as it did on the cross. God on a Cross. Humanity at its worst. Divinity at Its best. God is not stumped by an evil world. He doesn't gasp in amazement at the depth of our faith or the depth of our failures. He knows the condition of the world and loves it just the same. For just when we find a place where God will never be (like on a cross) we look again and there He is, in the Flesh. The Peace of God transcends all logic, scheming and efforts to explain it. This kind of peace is not a human achievement. It is a gift from above(John 14:27). The peace that kept His thoughts clear and Heart pure as He hung on the cross. This was His Peace. This can be your peace. - Max Lucado Calm Moments for Anxious Days
I had written about my thorn on my side; today, here. This contemplative thought by Max Lucado; matches perfectly. You are surely lead by the Holy Ghost. I had an outreach effort done yesterday. Sometimes - being a good listener is all we can do; and then; we go to the throne of God. I wrote it down; so that you all can pray with me. I WILL TAKE THIS PRAYER TO THE LORD. THANK YOU.
My understanding of the teaching of the Council is that purgatory exists and there ARE souls there. The church teaches that Hell exists but does teach that any soul is there. I am truly enjoying the work you are doing, Father and am totally committed to completing the podcast.
Yes this is a very hard topic but I say yes yes yes yes and I love Jesus I love my neighbors Community I love you father Mike we just need to keep praying one-day-at-a-time and I know y'all just keep me in prayer cuz this topic always frightens me and it really shouldn't alright everybody good night and sweet dreams God bless

Prayers for your intentions, your father's intentions and all of the souls in need of prayer particularly those in need of purgatorial prayer today and every day especially at the Hour of Mercy. Amen 🙏❤️🙏 Jews do believe in a purgation that takes place after death though. I just found out that the Qaddish is only prayed for eleven months because it is thought to be an insult to imply that the loved one’s sins were so severe that he would require a full year of purification. Interesting verrrry interesting 🙏❤️🙏

The final part was later added. Sometimes I make a chaplet with the longer form on the large beads and the original form on the small beads.

Here is the prayer: (According to tradition, St. Gertrude the Great was told by Our Lord that each time she piously recited the following prayer, it would release 1,000 souls (or a vast number) from their suffering in purgatory.) The Prayer of St. Gertrude Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen. God would reply to St. Gertrude that He would use whatever was offered to Him for the faithful departed, according to His inclination to show pardon & mercy.

The “dung hill covered in snow” analogy for imputed righteousness that Luther put forward makes a stark contrast with the idea that God gives us the grace to actually be transformed into his likeness. The concern that some have that this somehow undermines the role of God in salvation is misplaced - when I’m transformed it’s because God has given me the grace and it redounds entirely to his merit not mine. But the argument for me is won by the idea that the ongoing process of purification, before and after death, is for my benefit. “Dung hills” can’t enjoy the the presence of God and the intimacy to which he calls us. To prepare our hearts and minds to be with God forever is a process that takes time and is rarely complete before the person dies. If God made it happen without involving a process over time then it would be like being given a personality transplant and the sudden discontinuity would be the equivalent of “me” being destroyed and a different person being brought into existence. How blessed we are that God wants to patiently transform us, with our cooperation, into the people he calls us to be.
Amen! Never did understand that “dung hill” analogy when I was a Protestant. It didn’t seem like it was biblical. Edit: Now I’m Catholic with the true teaching.

This makes sense to me, heaven or hell, purgatory and purification. There are teachings of Christ i don't understand but either followed or strayed from and I didn't understand until later what it might or does have to do with love and choosing love. Good and gracious God, give all participating in CIAY and our families a sincere desire to love You and yhe grace to see just how good you are that we may freely choose You without fear of the world, fear of our sense of self, fear of struggle, or fear of persecution. Give us to grace to choose Younow and at the hour of our death because it is so clear that every and any other choice is the wrong one. Forgive us oh Lord for our blindness, our deafness, our dumbness, and deliver us from the grips and tricks of the evil one. Let us love You and love You the way You want to be loved. Holy Mary intercede for us where we are lacking, in Jesus' name amen.❤❤
I struggle with knowing that even if I make it to Heaven, what if someone I know goes to hell? Will I forget them so that I do not suffer knowing they are eternally damned? Will the infinite love of Gods presence drown out my memory of them? Maybe letting go of this is part of purgatory? Please pray for me to gain wisdom and clarity on this issue so I can have peace because this is ruining my peace, I am praying for all of you. Thank you and God bless you.
All we need is God, He is peace beyond understanding, when your up there with Him nothing will bother you, God’s Blessings and Graces to you on your journey ! ❤
One thought is we know God loves more perfectly than we can. In heaven our will is perfectly conformed to God's will and His just judgement. Praying for your loved ones, living or dead, is the right course and we are told we find peace by leaving the rest to God. "Cast all your worries upon him because he cares for you." 1 Peter 5:7.
I used to worry when I was a lot younger that my dad would not be in heaven. I would say I didn’t want to go to heaven if my daddy was in hell. I’ve since learned better. God is perfect Mercy & Justice. In the final judgement we will see how everything fits together. We will praise & glorify God for His justice & mercy. In the meantime we pray the Divine Mercy chaplet for our deceased family & friends that they are immersed in the love & mercy of Christ’s passion at the hour of death no matter how long ago it was.🙏❤️
Those who struggle with addiction go through a perpetual Purgatory that they may not even be able to conquer in this life. In fact, it is unlikely they do. The prayer of the broken addict is unbelievably powerful, "Father I know Your love for me, but i can't get over myself. Forgive me, Lord, you know how much my heart burns for You, but this body burns in these addictions all the more." Everyone is addicted to sin through concupiscence we battle everyday some days are easier than others, but ultimately, we will likely fall. We must get back up and look to the Father for to not is hell. Purgatory is one of the greatest graces of God. All of us who battle with our addictions may one day wake up and it will be all gone. GLORY TO JESUS CHRIST!!
Word. Dr. Brant Pitre et al have also shown how some parables of Jesus reference purgatory implicitly. For example Luke 12:35-48 describes severe and light punishments given to servants who did not do the will of their master. Contrast this to Luke 19:11-27 in which a different unfaithful servant who buried the talent given to him instead of investing it was punished by being cast away into darkness.
Thanks, Nathan! Great insight. I love Dr. Pitre’s teachings, especially when he points out the Jewish roots of our Catholic beliefs. God bless you. 🙏❤️
Once again it's not a choice but declaration. Either we fully believe and proclaim Jesus is the Way, the Truth; the Life or else we falsely claim that we are are the way the truth the life. The only one with a choice in the matter is choice of God as Jesus the chosen one and those Jesus chooses who know Jesus to be the authentic Way, Truth; Life. To speak of that narrow way which few have the strength to enter, I'm convinced the narrow gate is the door to the confessional. You know we have a little purgatory here on earth that is called Confession. It puts us in the state of grace to receive the Eucharist with the great communion of saints. Those who bypass this grace do themselves harm and harm to the community of the faithful. This is why some among us have fallen asleep not believing in transubstantiation that Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist: Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. If they forsake the cleansing of Reconciliation how will they be prepared for Purgatory's refining fire? I have come to see Purgatory in the final chapters of Revelation. There is a group of sinners bound for eternal damnation, the second death and another group of sinners in a place outside the city with the ability to be cleansed to enter the City of God. Could this be Purgatory? If so it's a suburb of heaven with a laundromat paid through penance and prayer to wash the peoples robes clean and be blessed to enter heaven. We do best to love Him and keep His commands but those who deceive themselves thinking they have no sin are sanctimonious delusional liars in the most wretched state and quite frightful to behold. I know I'm terrified for their sake be terrified for mine if I don't practice what I preach. Pray for the living and thrice as hard for the dead so they can in turn pray for us. All you holy angels and saints pray for us. Be blessed, Live blessed; bless others.
A life of faith does not guarantee immunity to troubles. This world is an ever-changing place and those changes are not always what we hope they will be. But while life may change, God's faithfulness to us does not. When worries leave you craving his constancy in this inconsistent world remember this. Max Lucado For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 DMCB
Thank you Father Mike. This Protestant view doesn’t make sense. I’m glad to hear the difference between…it’s the sinners prayer that they think saves them.
I grew up with that Protestant view, exactly the way Fr. Mike described it, I was a Catholic for 25 years not knowing that Jesus is the Holy Eucharist. And even after I knew, I have fallen. And I still humbly pray to be a Saint, because I know that nothing is too hard for God, I also know that I am a hard case, but Jesus, I Trust in You.
@@joanhaselman444 welcome back home. I was VERY stagnant..70’80’.+ I never went elsewhere. By researching other denominations (and there’s thousands man made) all it took was the Holy Spirit..all came full circle. Thank you dear Lord! If u ever want to chat..❤️❤️✝️✝️🙏🙏
If Fr. Mike says that we believe that we should be transformed intrinsically, how can the penances offered by the living help purify the souls in purgatory? If they still have attachments to sin or if they lack the love needed to enter heaven, how can the sacrifices of the living help them achieve that? Isnt it dependent on their own will and sincere repentance and transformation of heart?
Ultimately, how spiritual goods are shared is a mystery, but we know they ARE shared because of the Communion of Saints. For instance, how does your prayer for your friend help to hasten or obtain her healing ( or whatever she's praying for)? We don't know the exact mechanism, but we know prayers and fasting help to obtain graces for others more quickly than they may have been able to obtain on their own.
Good question, in the mean time I will not stop praying for my loved ones who have passed just in case. At worst, you spend time in prayer and reflection so it is not time wasted. What I really struggle with is even if I make it to heaven what if someone I love goes to hell? Will I forget about them in Heaven? Maybe Gods glorious presence will drown out their memory or something. Pray for me that I gain wisdom and peace over this issue.
@@wms72 this is true, I have been praying the Rosary that the men in my family stop hardening their hearts and become open to the holy spirit. @@jocelynsoriano1206They have to accept a lot of other things about Catholicism before they’ll accept this. However you can ask where the soul of a person is after they die. Most will say they’re in “soul sleep”. Then step-by-step you show all the places in the Bible where it shows souls are awake & aware after death, parable of Lazarus & the rich man, Revelation vision of martyrs under the altar, Hebrew’s “great cloud of witnesses” after listing the men of faith. There are places where it’s implied but not outright stated, Jesus saying Abraham & the prophets rejoiced to see His day.
Day 140 takeaways: If you die in God’s grace, but imperfectly purified, the soul goes through a purification process. After the Fall, mankind became DEPRIVED of righteousness but we did not become DEPRAVED. Martin Luther professed that mankind became DEPRAVED and salvation was imputed to souls. Lutherans believe the soul is passively clothed with the saving graces of Christ, like snow covering a dung heap. Hence, the idea of once saved, always saved. Therefore there was no need for Purgatory. The Catholic view is more an intrinsic justification to obtain salvation, meaning that individuals must choose to cooperate with God’s grace. Yet, we all fall short. In Purgatory our hearts are made capable of loving God more fully. Throughout Scripture, from the very beginning, Christians prayed for the dead. (1 Corn, 3-15 and 1 Peter, 1-7) Jesus speaks of Gehenna (Hell) more than He speaks on any other subject. We cannot love God if we sin gravely against Him, or against our neighbor, or against ourselves. It’s one thing to DESIRE Heaven, but it’s another thing to CHOOSE it. Hell is the definitive SELF-EXCLUSION from Communion with God and the Blessed. The chief punishment of Hell is eternal separation from God. God predestines no one to go to Hell. He wants everyone to choose Him.
Can anyone honestly say that they have perfectly loved God right up to the moment of their death? That they have perfectly loved their neighbor? If no one can say this then everyone has to go to purgatory, not like previously stated that some people go and some don't.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion have mercy on us and on the whole world ❤
Amen... +JMJ+

My heart doesn't love God the way He should be loved.
But if it doesn't happen in this life, then God gives us this incredible opportunity to have it happen in Purgatory
Oh the mercy of God ❤️
My God, I believe, I adore, I hope and I love Thee! I beg pardon for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope and do not love Thee. Amen
Amen
Amen, this is the prayer I pray daily when the priest consecrates the bread, then again when he consecrates the wine.
My interior life has exploded 💥💥💥
God is so GOOD!

Hello everyone & Happy Day 140!🙏
Hello and I will be going to the Sat. vigil mass with my son.

My understanding of the teaching of the Council is that purgatory exists and there ARE souls there. The church teaches that Hell exists but does teach that any soul is there. I am truly enjoying the work you are doing, Father and am totally committed to completing the podcast.
At Fatima, our Lady told the three child seers that many souls go to hell because they have no one to pray or make sacrifices for them.

Just realized- the Jewish tradition of cleansing in the Mikveh is a type of earthly example of what purgatory is.
No, it's not. Purgatory involves suffering.

Jews do believe in a purgation that takes place after death though. I just found out that the Qaddish is only prayed for eleven months because it is thought to be an insult to imply that the loved one’s sins were so severe that he would require a full year of purification. Interesting verrrry interesting 🙏❤️🙏

The Prayer of St. Gertrude
Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen.

Exactly. Heaven is not Heaven if you are still a dung hill.
Amen! Never did understand that “dung hill” analogy when I was a Protestant. It didn’t seem like it was biblical.
Edit: Now I’m Catholic with the true teaching.

Word.
Thank you for that insight!

I love this analogy, mind if I steal it?

A life of faith does not guarantee immunity to troubles. This world is an ever-changing place and those changes are not always what we hope they will be.
We do need to take it seriously, but it doesn't seem like its talked about enough.
@@wms72 its not easy to explain to non-Catholics though
Good question, in the mean time I will not stop praying for my loved ones who have passed just in case. At worst, you spend time in prayer and reflection so it is not time wasted. What I really struggle with is even if I make it to heaven what if someone I love goes to hell? Will I forget about them in Heaven? Maybe Gods glorious presence will drown out their memory or something. Pray for me that I gain wisdom and peace over this issue.
@@wms72 this is true, I have been praying the Rosary that the men in my family stop hardening their hearts and become open to the holy spirit. I NEVER told them I prayed for them and they still do not know but I know two of them started going to mass and the other one is wearing a Rosary now (even though i think he is not supposed to but it is a latino thing lol).
