Thank you, Dr. Scott Hahn, for the very simple clarification. It's easy to understand and helps us Catholics to explain the same to the others using your simplicity. It's a gift, Dr. Hanh from God. Prayers!!!
You catholics better read the Bible for yourself! Purgatory does not exist in the Bible, it's an invention of the evil Vatican, the whore of Babylon. Read the Bible for yourself: the saved people will go to heaven with JESUS, the lost into hell and later into the Lake of Fire. Listen to real theologians like Dr. John Ankerberg and check out the Jack Chick Gospel Tracts!
When I face anti-Catholicism I just continue loving the person and loving Christ. I remind myself that God's will is the only will that matters; only God's opinion of me matters.

The suffering is the separation of our souls/spirits from God as we purify. We will be utterly burning in the pain of our desire to reunite with Him who created us.
@trollpatrol7215 Yes, and along with that, when a person finds themself in that purging process, an immense joy of knowing with infallible certitude that they will see God face to face!
If you suffer for your sins in a flame then the cross of Christ is of no effect to you, you are trying to enter through another door, but Jesus says, " I am the door by me if any man enter in he shall be saved." Jesus died for your sins, if you have to pay even one penny for your sins then you deny the cross, you make the blood of Jesus ineffective in your life, no one will see God except through the blood of the cross, no one.
@@alfran03 Yes, Jesus died to save us from eternal fire... Purgatory is only a waiting place of purification, in other words, you can still be saved and have to enter into purgatory. Once you are fully holy in the eyes of the lord, then you can enter his kingdom.

It is very difficult to convince any Protestant, or at least the ones I know. They seem to demand to see the EXACT wording in the Bible - in this case "Purgatory" - or it may be Confirmation or Confession. I try to explain that many doctrines are derived, from principles, eg Jesus gave the authority to forgive sins, he didn't use the word "confession". Then the counter-argument would be "that was only to the apostles". Then my counter-argument will be "if the power was extinguished with the apostles, then so was the Great Commission to preach to the whole world". On top of all that, these guys are reading modern English Protestant translations, and we know many words have been changed, like "tradition". And so it goes round & round in circles. I give up, not because I don't care for people, but unless they are willing to go back to the Greek and Latin (which I don't know, but the Early Church Fathers would explain from there), I have found zero progress.
"I have found zero progress", you say. But, fret not. There's a good chance that you planted a bug in their mind that will manifest later. One data point, that along with other data points they may have heard, or will hear, will lead them to realize the veracity of Catholic doctrine. Keep on truckin', bro.
Well you have an advantage as you don't believe the bible to be complete and as a roman Catholic you have been taught that the church is the authority and not the bible. purgatory is the state in which the individual atones for the sins that were unconfessed and un repented of in a stage between earth and heaven. Odd that 1 Peter 2:24 points out that Jesus has atoned for all the sins of the believer? You do not find any teaching by anyone in the scriptures about this . Heb 9:27 appears to state the opposite of what you accepted.
@@brucewmclaughlin9072 Yes, Jesus has atoned for all sins of all time of all people, BUT, that atonement is not a blanket forgiveness of everyone's every sin ever, but it is atonement in principal and is applied only when a person repents and confesses and desires reconciliation with God. Most of us will die without having been perfected in this life, having some lingering attachments to a sinful thing or two, so those last dredges of sin will be removed by the Blood of Jesus after we die, so we can be finally and fully sanctified in order to get into heaven. That is Purgatory.
I recently converted to Catholicism after nearly 49 years as a Protestant. I started out as a Southern Baptist at age 11, and then became an Episcopalian in my 20's. I was baptized in the Holy Spirit when I was 18. I am grateful to the Anglican Communion, as that is where God revealed to me the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist...at a time when I, too, was anti-Catholic (and especially anti-Real Presence). I went to a Christian college (Asbury University) where I was exposed to several different Protestant denominations. Many Protestants think they will not be judged after death, but I have always believed in the "Believer's Judgment" (2 Cor. 5:10), as many Protestants do. St. Paul said we will all sit before the Judgment Seat of Christ...not to determine whether we're saved or not, but what we have done, both good and bad. I never thought of that as a reference to purgatory, but it makes sense. We will have both reward and punishment, and our place in Kingdom of Heaven will be established, whether greatest, or least, or somewhere in between.
You were never a good and faithful Protestan, you was a uneducated individ that moved from a religion to another not because you were looking for the truth but because you were uneducated in the Bible teachings. Probably you never read the entire Bible for front to back. You were looking for a religion that tickle your ears and to make you fill good about yourself.
Welcome home to the only church founded by Jesus Christ. Please ignore the rude remark by the Protestant. I was Protestant for 55 years and history is on the side of the Catholic Church. God bless you.
Purgatory is only for believers who are destined for heaven. It's for the final purification, because 'nothing impure shall enter heaven' (Revelation 21:27). All practising Christians (Catholics & Protestants) believe in 'sanctification', the process to become more Christ-like, which is required of all disciples of Christ. "Be perfect, as your Heavenly Father is perfect" (Matt 5:48). It's a lifelong process & few people will be that perfect when they die; so this sanctification process may continue after death for some Christians, before their souls finally enter heaven. Concerning our fate for eternity, it's either only heaven or hell. Purgatory is temporary, & only for those going to heaven.

The reason the Lord came down is to save the sinner that whoever believes in him will be saved. So he also made it known that he came to implement the word of God accordingly and not through man's tradition. So did he brought the thief with him who humbled himself, absolutely yes. Remember after death comes judgement, nothing in between.
We Catholics believe that. There is only one judgement, one. But the outcome of the judgement is not always go free or be condemned to the death penalty. Sometimes it's stay in jail until you pay the last penny; then, after you pay your debt, go free. Protestants only see go free or die.
Yes, after death we are judged. if we died in the friendship of God, we are judged to be able to get into heaven. But if we have some lingering attachments to sin, He will finish sanctifying us before we get into heaven, because only perfectly pure people can be there. If we die in a state of rebellion (ie unrepented mortal sin), we are judged accordingly and won't get into heaven.

And this doesn't rule out post-death completion of a believer's sanctification through the final application of the Blood of the Cross to the person. That's all Purgatory is, it is a process, not a place. It is the last stage of a believer's sanctification, for those who die with some lingering attachments to sin. @@AmericanBerean Interesting how you agree with 1 Peter 2:24 and then state for those who die with some lingering attachments to sin. Christ atoned for every sin and there are no lingering sins . Purgatory is man made and contradicts the complete atonement for all of our sins. I am completely sin free in the eyes of God , yet I sin every day . I am still sin free in the eyes of God because Jesus has atoned for every sin I have done , am doing , or will do. I am righteous because of Christ, I have the gift of salvation through faith, I do not depend on works to supplement my salvation , and I try to do the works that God created me for Eph2:10 Romans 7 speaks about sin and it is repeated twice to get your attention. Interesting because I thought it was me who was sinning and could not stop no matter how much I tied to.
@@brucewmclaughlin9072 "I am completely sin free in the eyes of God , yet I sin every day . I am still sin free in the eyes of God because Jesus has atoned for every sin I have done , am doing , or will do." Yes, Jesus dies for ALL our sins... when we're born again into God's family, we are a clean slate. Our rebirth removed the primary effect of Adam's Sin (eternal separation from God), and forgave us of all our past sins, if any. But we still bear the secondary effects of that original Sin (weakened will, disordered desires, inhibited intellect), collectively known as concupiscence, the tendency to sin. So, as children of God, we can still sin and we're not forgiven those present and future sins until we commit and repent of them. If we don't repent of whatever sin, we are not forgiven of it. So, if we die in that state of unrepented venial sin, we'll be finally purified in the process of Purgatory before we can get into heaven. In the case of a mortal sin (deliberate commission of a "sin unto death", as John puts it), we lose our salvation, until such time as we repent of it and confess it for forgiveness. If a child of God is in a state of mortal sin, he has separated himself from God, and if he dies unrepentant, he is bound for Hell. (That is the "unforgivable sin" Jesus spoke of in Matthew.) Jesus' Sacrifice was not a blanket forgiveness of all believers' sins of all time. That is a new and novel idea, from the 16th century or later, amounting to a doctrine of man.
Hebrews 9:27 " And it is appointed unto men once to die,but after this judgement" "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness." 1 John 1:9
When I read the passage from 1 Cor 3 I am reminded of Jesus’ parable of the sheep and the goats. Things aren’t as simple as using baptism as a free pass to heaven. If we don’t have great love, as Jesus loves, then what little we have done for Jesus is pointless and in the end will be burned up/thrown out/etc, even if we will still be saved because of Jesus Christ’s gift of salvation. Like the servant with the 1 talent, if we a lousy job with the gifts that God has given us then he will give what little he first gave us to someone else and let us in the back door to heaven while those who sacrificed much and loved much will be welcomed with fanfare into the front gates. (Of course there are varying degrees of the above and everyone is judged only by God) And why do we need purgatory?… Everyone who is saved but is not ready for heaven needs purgatory. Think of it as showing up at the biggest celebration of the century in the biggest city of the world with a red carpet entryway and cameras flashing, celebrities being interviewed and people going in one by one. Then you show up and you realize that you hadn’t showered or shaved in weeks, you smell, your clothes are filthy, and you have no shoes. What’s more, you were just mugged and you’re battered and bleeding. It’s clear you aren’t presentable enough to go into the party and aren’t even healthy enough, even if you could manage to clean yourself up. So you get cleaned up and check yourself into a hospital and wait for the healing process to complete. Now, most of us are not ready for heaven. EVEN if we had recently gone to confession we still have what is called a “temporal inclination to sin”. In other words, our will is not automatically and habitually inclined toward loving God completely. To shed that inclination is difficult. It’s painful. I find it unfortunate that so many Christians get into such heated debates over the saved/not-saved/purgatory issue when much of that can be avoided if we would all look at it with logic. When we die we don’t stop being human. God won’t just run ramshod over our personalities if he has been so patient with us while we are alive. That would be like taking away His gift of free will. If He wanted to do something like that then why didn’t he just free us from our sinful inclinations at our baptism? Then we would only have to deal with external temptations from evil, like He did. He didn’t create us as robots. He made us as intellectual beings, in His own image, to live in relationship with Him for eternity. So,what’s my take? God please purify me now and help me to love you as you love me…because I’d rather not have to be purified later, and I DEFINITELY don’t want to miss the chance of loving you or any of your creatures while I am able.
Interesting read. As Christ has forgiven every sin and we are perfect in the eyes of God because of what Christ has done there is no need to do a final clean up in purgatory.. Everyone who is saved but is not ready for heaven needs purgatory. . Flaw found . You are saved and washed in the blood of the lamb, you are sanctified and justified as 1 Cor 6:11 points out in the past tense As flesh and blood does not inherit the kingdom of God , we are not able to make ourselves clean on this planet. Christ has done that completely already the moment you repent , confess your sins , get baptized , confess the Lord to others, you are completely sin free in the eyes of God. Think of it as showing up at the biggest celebration of the century in the biggest city of the world with a red carpet entryway and cameras flashing, celebrities being interviewed and people going in one by one. So you get cleaned up and check yourself into a hospital and wait for the healing process to complete. Yes and what you seem to miss here is the Lord cleans and heals the person before he walks into the celebration. A different story if the person is not a believer. Now, most of us are not ready for heaven. On our own , no we are not ready for heaven . With Christ in our lives then we are ready for heaven Col 2: 9-15 EVEN if we had recently gone to confession we still have what is called a “temporal inclination to sin”. Romans 7: gives you a valid clue to what sin is and we die as sinful people but spiritually we are alive in Christ. In other words, our will is not automatically and habitually inclined toward loving God completely. To shed that inclination is difficult. It’s painful. And it happens here while you live as after you die Heb 9:27 does not give you a third option.
All believers are saints.God purifies us on the cross. Paul said that after all he is an unprofitable servant. Our works are burnt up but we are saved by the skin of our teeth. Christ has put away all sin forever. Are you saying that Christ’s work on the cross is insufficient for salvation? The argument must answer this question. Otherwise why the cross?

A thought about ‘Purgatory’: at the point of my death I will be a human person with my identity, character, personality, knowledge, will all at some level of perfection/ imperfection. My hope is that God will grant me eternal life with Himself. If I die today, I vividly realize that the current state of my person (identity, character, personality, knowledge, will, etc) is most definitely NOT the state I want to be in throughout eternity. So, I’m going to have to change - i.e. be perfected. If I am really close to perfect right now, like 98-99% - then I suppose God can just miraculously zap away the last smidgeons of my imperfection, and I’d still be able to recognize that I’m still ME. But if - as is so so very much more likely the case - my perfection level is somewhere far far FAR lower than 98%, then an instantaneous miraculous zapping would result in such a radically different ME that I would be unlikely to even recognize myself. So, I think that for I-MYSELF to be saved, sanctified, and prepared for eternal life then I-MYSELF must go through the change in all its necessary aspects. My ‘selfhood’, my ‘identity’, my ‘character’, my ‘personality’, my ‘will’ must grow through the process - otherwise I wouldn’t recognize the perfected me as being ME. It would be some stranger who goes on to eternal life, and not really ME. To remain ME, then I-MYSELF need to experience the changing, the perfecting, the purifying, the ‘purging’. Anyway, I am a believer who once considered Purgatory just plain silly, but who now thinks of Purgatory as yet another very loving and encouraging gift of the Lord’s merciful kindness.
@@ph50493 I agree 100 percent! BUT, please try to understand Purgatory as a phase of the Lord’s merciful plan to lift us up and share His eternal life with us. Purgatory has nothing to do with us doing ‘works’, but rather with us receiving His gift of purification. Of course, people who are actually PERFECT at the point of their death won’t need the gift of purification, but the imperfect among us certainly will. Also the Scriptures are given by the Lord to His Family - to reveal Himself to humanity, to promise, to thrill, to remind, to admonish, to inspire prayer and relationship - but the Bible is not intended as a source book for the practice of amateur theology.

John Henry Newman talks about the ignored but importaint ancient Christian belief traditions that Protestantism has never correctly understood as foundational to Christian belief. Purgatory is simply one of those elements. I am neither Catholic nor Prostestant, but am astonished by the richness of early Christian tradition that has historically become battle-ground for belief. As there is one Christ, there can be only one Christianity; all else is either dishonesty or error.

My understanding was that He offered us the opportunity to suffer with Him on the cross in love (vicariously through our life's sufferings), so that we could be more fully incorporated into the eternal love of the Holy Trinity. Certainly His sacrifice was more than enough, (infinitely so), but it is in His desire to be in relationship with us in the midst of our sin-torn life that He afforded us this opportunity to suffer with Him. And how lucky I am that this is the case, for now my suffering has meaning. What once was a death knell, sounding into the deep of my wounds, tempting me to despair, is now a clarion call of hope; for I am desired even in my sin and pain and suffering. I am called to struggle with Christ through it all, not allowing sin to characterize the deepest part of my heart, but rather Christ's call to crack open my smelly heart and pour it over Him, so that His infinite healing power can flow through me, and I can draw near to Him on the cross, and sin no more.

Dr. Scott Hahn, would you then say in the light of your interpretation of the scriptures that Purgatory is a process more than a place that takes place in Heaven when we are not yet perfect as He is perfect and we are purified or purged by fire, by Christ?
Luke 16:19-21 Jesus makes it abundantly clear that there are two distinct realms in which the souls of the dead exist. One is a place of reward, a Paradise. The other is a place of torment and suffering, where souls are separated from the Lord eternally.
Abraham's bosom and Gehenna are both parts of Sheol, the realm of the dead. Then Christ sacrificed himself and went down to Sheol himself, to stage a massive jailbreak. The Lord led the righteous departed to Heaven, emptying Abraham's bosom. There is no purgatory, just like there will be no rapture. If it's new, it ain't true. Purgatory wasn't a thing for over 1,000 years after the death of our Saviour.

Purgatory makes perfect sense to me. I believe if you confess your sins and are sincerely sorry God will forgive you, but there has to be some accountability for sin. We may, in our ignorance, think we aren't sinning but we are all sinners.

Where in the Bible is Christmas and Easter mentioned and where does it say that the Bible is a Christian's only source of information. When was the Bible written and what did they follow before that?
My question is simple . A spanking causes nerve fibers to be stimulated that are appreciated as pain. Over time one makes the connection that a given behavior results in pain and the behavior is reduced. What is the mechanism of purification in purgatory?
It’s appointed unto man once to die and after that the judgment Hebrews 9:27. . But we cannot buy the gift of God with money Acts 8:20 ❤
Yes it is Hard for them to accept the Truth, satan Loves their worship to him through man made statues, praying to and for the dead, Listening to Untested Spirits , medals beads, all give satan worship and takes away the worship direct to Jesus Alone who is the only Mediator to God the Father.... Makes me want to cry, sadly we can only pray ,before it is to late for them. to Be Born Again as Jesus said we must be...
@@beagle5 Thanks for your encouragement and response. Yes purgatory was established by Pope Sixtus 1V in 1476 when he wanted money for the building of Sistine Chapel. You could get indulgences by paying money. Today people are paying 10 dollars for Mass Cards for the dead.
They make up a bunch of self aggrandizing doctrines like claiming to be the first church, the church Christ established, rosaries, transubstantiation, etc. and then grasp at verses out of context to support said doctrines. By the way, purgatory makes no sense in light of the Pauline epistles, and Hebrews. We are sanctified by His blood and "He hath offered one sacrifice for sin forever."
Addition... Revelation 22: 18-19; If anyone adds any word to the living Word of God; God will punish them with the plagues, it describe in His Holy Word. And anyone take away what is in God's living Word; God will, take away from them the tree 🌳 of life and from His Holy City 🙏 😳 🎉
I am a born Catholic. I recently posted on a Catholic you tube channel about praying with my blessed St Benedict medal before going to sleep at night, and how effective it was at keeping Satan away. I received a reply from someone who told me to "turn away from my idols and pray to Jesus". This person was most likely a non Catholic. It pains me to see how some other non Catholic Christian sects bash the Catholic church!
Yes, and mostly because they don't really understand some of the doctrines and practices, such as using blessed prayer tools, aka sacramentals, as you do. They don't understand that we are not worshiping that object but only using it to enhance our worship of God. Now, someone who doesn't feel they need such help, that's fine, they don't HAVE to use these optional devotions.
No one is a born Catholic. Catholics must make the decision for themselves whether to accept the substitutionary sacrifice of Jesus for all of our sins or remain as the common man with it's consequences. Acts 2:38 can not apply to any baptized baby as if that takes away any sin. As to medals ? Late invention not found in the early church along with the rosary , brown scapular , or any other trinkets that the superstitious would use. Heb 12:2 tells who we are to focus on imitate Christ EPH 5:1 The weapons of our warfare are found in Eph 6:10-18 You might notice that medals, the rosary , and scapulars are not mentioned !
@@brucewmclaughlin9072 let me rephrase that - I was born into a practicing Catholic family; and I chose to remain in it. Sacramentals are part of the Catholic faith. Would you criticize a Jew for wearing a special prayer shawl and cap?
@@brucewmclaughlin9072 Regarding your reference to Acts 2:38, saying baptism doesn't take away sin, Infant Baptism is the sign of God adopting that child as His own. As Paul points out, it is the sign of the New Covenant, as circumcision was the sign of the Old (Col2:11-12). Now, under the Old Covenant, they didn't have the Grace which Jesus provides for us in the New Covenant, so that now the sign of the Covenant actually conveys the Sactifying Grace which washes away the primary effect of Adam's Sin (which is everlasting separation from God), making the recipient Justified and Sanctified. (for an adult, his personal sins are also washed away). (Sins after baptism are another matter for another discussion, but suffice to say repentance and confession allow Grace to heal us then).
@@AmericanBerean Baptism does not remove sins at all ,it is symbolic of the death and resurrection of our lives dying to sin and being raised in new life as a new creation of God. Baptizing a baby to remove original sin sounds pious but has no basis in scripture. Every baptism found in the new testament involves a decision made by the individual. Babies are not capable of sin , repentance, confession of sin , or confession of faith in the savior. Sin is atoned for by Jesus 1 Peter 2:24 So why would you look to objects to provide protection for you from satans attacks when the scriptures point you to Eph 6:10-18 and not to objects?
St. Catherine of Genoa (1551): “I believe no happiness can be found worthy to be compared with that of a soul in Purgatory except that of the saints in Paradise: and day by day this happiness grows as God flows into these souls.” In some popular prayers and devotions, and in some spiritual writings, purgatory is described as sort of a temporary hell, and differing from hell only in that those in purgatory know they will eventually go to heaven. However, the Catechism of the Catholic Church rejects that view of purgatory. The Catholic Church does not teach that purgatory is a place or that those in purgatory experience the pain of fire: purgatory is not a “mini-hell,” and is entirely different from the punishment of the damned. I too have recently come to the catholic church and the idea of purgatory was kind of interesting because in other churches there is that all or nothing kind of mentality as you say, saved not saved, even n some traditional churches hell or heaven, and the passage the evangelical churches tend to fall on for the saved/not saved version is 2 corinthians 5:8 - to be absent from the body is to be present with the lord. Thankfully at least we have people like SH and others who come and tell us these things because I also know that many people are constantly either worried because they fear losing their salvation or fear they won't get to heaven, or they are so sure of it they can carry on regardless because they are fully convinced the once saved always saved is the motto they have adapted which takes little or no effort or thought on their part.......... Part of my coming to the catholic church was and is the direct correllation and mirroring of the practises in Judaism which then lead me through some teaching to see the connection between the two and that connection was Peter, if he was the builder of the first church in Rome which he was or certainly the catalyst of it and if the practises and rituals are a continuation of the Jewish practices which they are then this must be the church and teaching we need. For me this is yet another confirmation of this.
My biggest criticism of Catholicism is the worship and prayers to Mary. Mary was not sinless. First Commandment of our Lord is "Have no other gods before me" not to mention worshipping of angels and prayers for the dead. That is dead religion.
@@patmelton43the problem is that Protestants are the one insisting we Catholics worship the Blessed Mother this question really baffles me. We love The Blessed Mother just like our mother she is the Mother of the Catholic Church. We honour her just like Jesus honour her. She was created by God and whatever power she has comes all from God. We never treat her as a goddess. Now my question to you is are better than Jesus Christ? If The Blessed Mother is enough for Jesus if Jesus love His mother so much, why can’t you? Why is the blessed mother enough to you?
@isabel I love conversion stories and I’m so excited for you. Welcome home. What Protestants need to understand is purgatory exist because of the mercy of God. He love us so much that he won’t send us straight to hell if we die unclean only if we don’t have mortal sin. So purgatory is a blessing for us to totally purify ourselves before we get to heaven. Because sins has consequences we still owe God a debt in that way we can pay Our debts in purgatory. What a blessing.
@@Maya-yp2ey Give me an example of that because I think you are lying. Why would protestant tell catholics anything except stop your works-based religion?
To describe certain relationships with the Catholic Church, I have used the letter 'C' to state three conditions. Talking to a Converted Catholic who was raised Baptist, she described me as a Cradle Catholic, since I was raised that way. I refer to myself as a Completed Catholic, since the Lord Jesus Christ found me, baptized me in His Spirit, and I have been growing in grace and the knowledge of Him. Learning truth in the Bible also sheds light on what is false. Many Catholic doctrines are not scriptural. At least 3 doctrines concerning Mary we can cite. The Catholic Church is more about Mary and the pope than Jesus. Jesus warned the scribes and Pharisees about teaching for doctrines the commandments of men (Mt. 15:9). Since hearing what others have said about Joe Biden, I can add two more 'C' conditions; a Cafeteria Catholic chooses what he will from that religion and discards the rest. Also, Corrupt Catholic can apply here and be extended to the evil priests, clergy and popes in history.
The Bible itself is another “doctrine” not in the Bible the Catholic church developed for the world. Dont forget that big one…🤷🏽♂ History shows us that Jesus didn't leave us a bible, - the apostles didn't tell us which books belong in the bible, - the church fathers never agreed on the 27 books of the NT through the 4th century, - not only did they not agree but their individual lists of would-be NT canons were GROWING during this time, growing in numbers of hundreds of “inspired” NT writings. Therefore, if it wasn't the Catholic/Orthodox church that compiled the 27 books of the NT in the 5th century with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and preserved it by laboriously hand copying them over and over throughout the centuries before the invention of the printing press, the “rule of faith” for many, please tell us who did? And if this church no longer exists today, what good is the text which came forth from her if she couldn't sustain herself?
Purgatory makes perfect sense....it's like doing an exam....very very few get 100% (heaven) straight up......and then some fail (Hell)....but the majority fall between 50% and 99% (Purgatory, at some level)
That is why we need Jesus. Jesus’ blood alone cleanses the believer from all unrighteousness. It is hard to comprehend but that is why it takes faith to believe that God’s grace alone has rid the believer of his sin. For the believer, though he still may struggle with sin, God now sees His Son, the sinless Lamb having taken their place on the cross. To accept purgatory is to say that Jesus’ sacrifice wasn’t enough. Jesus went through the full extent of hell for us so that we wouldn’t have to.
@@austinfarlow2065 Again Purgatory is in the Jewish Bible Torah, Jesus our Lord is Jewish not American. Respect the ancestry and traditions of our Lord Jesus, read the Bible thru the Jewish tradition..period.
@@austinfarlow2065 This isn't a discussion about salvation. Catholics agree with you. However, Scripture is clear that believers will face the Judgment Seat of Christ...not to find out whether we are going to heaven or hell (heaven is a given as you have said, for those who are in Christ), but whether our works were good or bad. See 2 Cor. 5:10. Our bad or worthless works will be burned up; we will receive rewards for good works in Christ. Purgatory isn't hell. It is a final place of purification, and will ultimately determine each person's rank in heaven. Both Jesus and St. Paul spoke of this.
Catholics don't teach salvation by works. This was the first myth that got busted for me. However, we are also never saved apart from works (James 2:14-26; Hebrews 11, entire chapter). Here is the passage you quoted, but in context: Ephesians 2:8 For it is by grace that you have been saved through faith. This has not come from you but from the gift of God. 9 It does not come from works, so that no one can boast. 10 *For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for a life of good works that God had prepared for us to do.*

Luke 16 just speaks of the hereafter. We either go to heaven or hell. There is no third choice. Some people may lose their rewards but never your salvation, once you are saved. The Holy Spirit keeps us and the Bible says "He seals us until the day of Judgment."
@@mschmidt1645 the fire in 1 Cor 3 is “the day” of future judgment, which will test the quality of our works and mercifully burn them up (ie., our works, not us) if they are found to be wanting. The loss suffered in that case is a loss of reward. It is a single “day” of judgment, still future, corporate, public, and brief. No mention of them waiting long ages while their works are being burned. Rather, we should imagine this loss of reward happening in an instant.
My question about purgatory would be if Jesus paid for our sin,,. Why do we have to pay for it again? I feel like if I had to pay for my own sin then why did Jesus have to die for it? It was explained to me by the Episcopal priest, saying if you go out to dinner with someone and they pay the bill do you have to pay it again no, you don’t you repent for it, but I don’t believe that I have to pay for it in purgatory
Instead of paying for dinner, I will offer a different scenario: Jesus' suffering through His Passion and death, opened the chain and unlocked the prison' gate from where sin had us slaved. But it is up to us (cooperating with God's Grace) to get up and step out from that place and turn our lives around and walk through the narrow gate. So, we have to do our part
That is why it is necessary to have an authority in teaching the Bible to avoid heresies as is the further breaking down of Christianity to 40,000 denominations til this day. Only the Catholic Church can provide this authority and so honestly we should ne on communion with Rome as Christians.
If the RCC is teaching the truth, to whom did this prophecy apply? It was to happen after the death of the apostles. (Acts 20:30) and from among you yourselves men will rise and speak twisted things to draw away the disciples after themselves. Just wondering.

@@RosalindToh I think you hit on a key insight focusing on the concept of Purgatory as being entirely constrained by *time and space* . That is the key. Only *matter* is constrained by time and space! And yet, oddly, that does not specifically disallow the concept of Purgatory, but rather *reconciles it* with of all things ..... reincarnation! It's an unprovable theory surely, but one that does make sense to me because it explains the apparent injustices and inconsistencies between peoples' lives. Some short, some long, some more agonizing than others, etc., etc. Given enough iterations in the "loop," until the conditions are met for us to "exit the loop" onto another stage in our soul's existence, our soul may then have a chance to be judged more fairly with equal justice for all. What are we after all? Our bodies? Or are our bodies just like clothes, discardable matter once they have fulfilled their purpose? Just look at any mummy in a museum. Just dust and discarded debris. Nothing else remains there of the person it once was. In general, I think we are *not supposed* to know consciously how this stuff works so we are not biased as we go through our lives. Each life is a unique experience in ... learning for our souls. Maybe this is why we don't *generally* remember past lives consciously, except for some exceptional cases (if we are to accept some people's testimonials to that effect). Perhaps there is a *reason* for those specific cases, for their lives, and perhaps for our lives as well. Overall, I suspect it would be rather overwhelming or disheartening for most (as it is for me) to know this for real. I've had a revulsion to the idea of reincarnation. Just to think to have to repeat all the trials and tribulations I've gone through in this life (and most of humanity has had it worse), can be disheartening. Maybe that's why we are *spared* from remembering! Like I said, I do not *know* any of this epistemologically or scientifically. It's just an intuition, but one that makes some logical sense. It certainly makes more sense than a final condemnation, by a loving God, of a soul as a result of a single life's experience. Perhaps the Hindus were onto something here.
He is a smooth talker and very effective. The Jews were given the OT. They did not and do not hold Maccabees as scripture. Rome had the audacity to add this to provide support for purgatory. Maccabees was written after the Tanakh was established but they do read it The Jews pray FOR the dead (not to) because they are a little more intelligent about G-D than Christians are. The dead are dead. They haven't gone to heaven or torment or anywhere else. As the Bible is plain on the subject we "sleep" in the grave until the Day of Resurrection then after the Day of Resurrection comes the Day of Judgement. Read the Bible. Oh and one other thing, Paul was a false apostle. Acts chapter 1 verses 21 and 22 states the qualifications for an apostle and Paul NEVER had them.
The Jews that recognized Christ as the Son of God, the second person of the Trinity, DID hold Maccabees as scripture: That's why this book is in the versions of the Bible used by the apostolic churches (Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Ethiopian Orthodox) You want to follow the teachings of the Jews who were the bad guys in the Bible? Have at it. I agree, though, that praying for the dead is not direct evidence for purgatory. If you believe in purgatory, however, the practice supports that belief.
The only time I read Jesus pray for the dead was to raise them to life again. Completely different from praying their souls into heaven. That cannot be done. Remember the story of the rich man and Lazarus? There is a great gulf between and none can pass from one side to another.

The doctrine of Purgatory defeats the work of the Cross. John. 1:5:13.says ,I have written these things that you may KNOW that you eternal life. Salvation is not a guessing game.
Purgatory does not defeat the work of the Cross, it manifests it! it is the application of the Blood of the Cross for the last time to the believer. After someone is born again into God's family, he is saved. But then he still tends to sin, even if only in a thought. At the time of his death, a believer might be holding on to some sinful things. After death, then, the Blood of Christ is applied a final, completing time, purging the believer of all remaining attachments to sin and tendencies to sin, absolutely perfecting that soul for the rest of eternity. (Unless he's a martyr. That sacrificial action serves the purpose that Purgatory does.)
@@kenkeil9067 Yes, as you say, "Jesus forgives us of all our sins and cleanses us from all unrighteousness". At the time we are born again into His family, Jesus does remove Sin from us, both the Sin of Adam, and our personal sins. The Sin of Adam (aka 'Original' Sin) separated all humans from union with God. When we're born again, that separation is undone and all our personal sins are washed away. But we still suffer from the tendency to sin (ie, fleeting impure thoughts or desires, or undue anger, etc). We can't get into heaven if we still have that tendency to sin. That tendency to sin will ultimately be removed only after we die and are purged from it, so you can see that Purgatory is a merciful thing indeed.
“Today” you will be with me in paradise (not after some time in purgatory) (said Jesus to the thief on the cross who was not baptized and clearly had sin in his life).
Paradise is where Abraham was and the parable of Lazarus being in his bosum. Our Lord Jesus Christ had NOT ascended into Heaven so the gates of Heaven were NOT open at that time. You can see where the rich man asked Father Abraham to ask Lazarus to dip his finger in water and bring it to him....(Also proof of intercession from Holy/Saints from) Abraham DID NOT say he couldn't send anyone to warn the rich man's brothers...Abraham said it would do no good! Since Our Lord Jesus Christ had NOT ascended into Heaven, he went and preached to the Spirits in PRISON, 1Pt.3:19-20 who had DISOBEYED since the days of Noah...8 were saved in all!...These Spirits were in PURGATORY...NOT HELL AS PROTESTANTS WANT YOU TO BELIEVE...ONCE CONDEMNED, NO ONE COMES OUT FROM HELL!

I used to believe in alternate dimensions that exist outside of time and space. I used to believe in souls (ghosts) and a communion of the holy dead. Six decades of observation and more recently critical thought tells me there isn't sufficient evidence such things exist. Belief is helpful in hopeless situations, but many people are hardwired to only believe with evidence and not feelings. Imagine if the afterlife were on trial, would the prosecution have enough evidence to prove its existence beyond a reasonable doubt? If so, present the evidence.
Purgatory, a total contradiction of what Jesus did on the cross. His death cleansed our sins and His rightousness is imputed into us. Romans4. We can stand before God, based only on His rightousness, not ours or us suffering for our sins. Jesus did that. Scott Hahn knows better, but he has so sold his soul to a false and corrupt religious system, that he twist scriptures to make it fit his man made religion.
Purgatory does not contradict Jesus' work, if MANIFESTS it. Purgatory is basically just the final application of the Blood of the Cross to the justified believer, which thus completes his sanctification.

Is there no a final destination that is not heaven. Some souls go to the new heaven and new earth where they will live eternally. Isn’t there a holding zone-heaven-before the new world.
I wonder why the sufferings and pains and death of Christ on the cross are hardly ever discussed when Purgatory is the subject. My objection to Purgatory, as a Protestant, has very little to do with “once-saved-always-saved.” Much more, I object to the idea that MY suffering can accomplish for me what CHRIST’S suffering cannot. The way I see it, if Christ’s pains are not enough to cleanse me from sin completely, then no amount of suffering on my part is going to compensate. It is an insult to the blood of Christ to say it is insufficient to save-that it requires my two-cent contribution of pain. What would my suffering in Purgatory accomplish? Is my guilt being punished? But Christ was already punished for my guilt. Is my sin being paid for? The death of Christ already paid for sin. Is my soul being cleansed? Isn’t the blood of Christ able to cleanse my conscience from every dead work? What need is there for Purgatory, then? It is laughable to suggest that my suffering would allow me to stand before God without embarrassment. If anything, it would make me more embarrassed. It is also a mistake to believe that anything less than eternal suffering on my part is enough for me to pay for even one little sin against God’s holiness. Neither my righteousness nor my suffering can ever make me worthy of heaven. Ever! Only Christ.
The misconception is that your sufferings and Christ's sufferings are somehow separate from one another. This is completely the opposite. It is in Purgatory that we're finally uniting ourselves with Christ's sufferings. We're truly aligning ourselves to be like Christ. Christ tells us himself to pick up our cross and follow him. That we will drink the same cup he does, he even warns the Apostles of this. "The way I see it, if Christ’s pains are not enough to cleanse me from sin completely, then no amount of suffering on my part is going to compensate. It is an insult to the blood of Christ to say it is insufficient to save-that it requires my two-cent contribution of pain. " If you're in Purgatory, you are already saved by the merits of Christ on the Cross. Your reward is eternal life in Heaven. Nothing is going to change that. The issue being though is that even though you acknowledged and accepted Christ's sacrifice on the Cross, you still had some attachment to sin when you died. That isn't because Christ failed to cleanse you. That's because you chose to dirty yourself and did not fully allow him to scrub you. Unless you want conclude that you died perfect and without sin. "It is laughable to suggest that my suffering would allow me to stand before God without embarrassment. If anything, it would make me more embarrassed." Why should you be embarassed other than it being an attack on your pride? The Apostles certainly weren't. They rejoiced in the fact that they were suffering in the name of the Lord, for the would share in His glory. "So they went on their way from the presence of the Council, rejoicing that they had been considered worthy to suffer shame for His name." Acts 5:41 "But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel. 16 I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.” Acts 9:15-16 "Now if we are children, then we are heirs-heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory." Romans 8:17 "For what credit is there if, when you sin and are harshly treated, you endure it with patience? But if when you do what is right and suffer for it you patiently endure it, this finds favor with God." 1 Peter 2:20 "For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ. 6 If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. 7 And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort." 2 Corinthians 1:5-7 There's also an entire chapter in 2 Corinthians where Paul boasts in his own sufferings. "It is also a mistake to believe that anything less than eternal suffering on my part is enough for me to pay for even one little sin against God’s holiness. " You would be correct. For the wages of sins is death (Romans 6:23). For its only the merits of Christ that purchased for us the reward of eternal life. We're not Pelagianists. The sufferings we go through would be meaningless without Christ. "Neither my righteousness nor my suffering can ever make me worthy of heaven. Ever! Only Christ." Correct. We as Catholics agree with you. We said the same thing about Pelagianism.
@@Cklert thank you for your interaction. I do already understand all that you’re saying about purgatory. It still does not make any sense to me. You say that purgatory is me being more united to Christ and identifying with his suffering. However, the Bible never depicts any of that stuff as actually atoning for my sins! Only Christ’s suffering on the cross can accomplish that. His suffering paid for sins, and whoever trusts him is already worthy of heaven because of his work, full-stop. Conformity to Christ’s likeness is the goal of salvation, not the cause. It is a gracious gift to share in Christ’s sufferings, but that doesn’t save me or anyone. It doesn’t remove sin. It is a fruit of salvation-part of the gift. It is not part of the root. You say that I wold only be embarrassed by suffering in purgatory because it is a blow to my pride. But of course, that’s what embarrassment IS! A blow to one’s pride. That’s the very definition of embarrassment. So, why then did the original video insinuate that one purpose of our suffering in purgatory is so that we can stand before God without being embarrassed? I think it’s because you think I need to be PROUD of myself in order to stand before God! I need to be able to look at myself and be pleased with what I see! I need to be able to stand there at the end and say, Yup. I suffered enough. I’m good now. I was sufficiently punished for all my sins. Now I’m finally worthy to stand in God’s presence! Except I’m still not worthy. I never will be. That fact that I was purged in purgatory only proves that to be true. So, I’m still embarrassed after purgatory. Just more so now. The only solution is to look away from myself. I will never be worthy. A hundred billion years in purgatory will not change that. But the Lamb who was slain is worthy. Only Christ’s suffering on the cross can accomplish that. His suffering paid for sins, and whoever trusts him is already worthy of heaven because of his work, full-stop. " We agree. The doctrine of Purgatory depends entirely on Christ's sacrifice. Perhaps I'm not being clear: *If you're in Purgatory, you have already been saved.* there is no maybe. Your reward is set and nothing will change that. Your soul is simply being prepared for perfection. As for the Bible never depicting that stuff. I'm sorry to say, that's incorrect. Hebrews 12:4-13 shows that God disciplines and gives us suffering to strengthen us against sin. That's why all the passages showcase the glory in suffering. "Conformity to Christ’s likeness is the goal of salvation, not the cause. It is a gracious gift to share in Christ’s sufferings, but that doesn’t save me or anyone. It doesn’t remove sin. It is a fruit of salvation-part of the gift. It is not part of the root." We agree, once again, *Purgatory is part of the gift of Salvation* it isn't a 'second chance to atone' it's simply the final process of sanctification that God gave us. He makes us perfect in this way. "You say that I wold only be embarrassed by suffering in purgatory because it is a blow to my pride. But of course, that’s what embarrassment IS! A blow to one’s pride. That’s the very definition of embarrassment. " Yes, and pride is a sin. It is dubbed "the queen of all sins." The opposite, humility, which is what Christ demonstrated. This is a non-sequitur. You cannot feel embarassment after Purgatory, because you would be in Heaven in the full Glory of the Lord. The fact that you were in Purgatory to begin with, proved that God did see you as worthy, not because of you or your merits obviously. But because you faithfully died in the Grace of Him. "So, why then did the original video insinuate that one purpose of our suffering in purgatory is so that we can stand before God without being embarrassed? I think it’s because you think I need to be PROUD of myself in order to stand before God! I need to be able to look at myself and be pleased with what I see! " He's quoting 1 John: 2:28: "And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming." And I'm actually proclaiming the opposite of being proud. I didn't think I need to explain this, but when we're finally in the presence of God, all our sins will be revealed to us. The Truth will be revealed to us. We will be ashamed of them. What John is saying is that by remaining and following Christ, even his suffering, God humbles us, so that we bear no shame, no pride, and no attachment to our sins. "Except I’m still not worthy. I never will be. That fact that I was purged in purgatory only proves that to be true. So, I’m still embarrassed after purgatory. Just more so now. " Except, once again that's not how Purgatory works. It is fair to say that you're not worthy. We're ALL not worthy. But the fact that you were in Purgatory, means that God saw that you *were* worthy by His Grace. It is only through the inviation of Christ are we worthy. But to say that you will never be worthy is dangerously close to self-hatred and despair. Against Jesus message of Love and Hope.

Learn all you can about salvation and focus on Christ as God's word tells you in Heb 12:2 Hebrews 9:27 points to no place for a clean up that purgatory claims. You are either in Christ and He in you or you are an unbeliever. Heaven or hell no final place for you to atone for sins when it is Christ who already atoned for your sins once and for all.

@@brucewmclaughlin9072 sez "Heaven or hell no final place for you to atone for sins when it is Christ who already atoned for your sins once and for all."
You are 100% correct in this. And this doesn't rule out post-death completion of a believer's sanctification through the final application of the Blood of the Cross to the person. That's all Purgatory is, it is a process, not a place. It is the last stage of a believer's sanctification, for those who die with some lingering attachments to sin. (This excludes un-repented mortal sins. Purgatory is not a second chance. Our life on Earth is our only chance.)

@@brucewmclaughlin9072 "I am completely sin free in the eyes of God , yet I sin every day . I am still sin free in the eyes of God because Jesus has atoned for every sin I have done , am doing , or will do."
Yes, Jesus dies for ALL our sins... when we're born again into God's family, we are a clean slate. (That is the "unforgivable sin" Jesus spoke of in Matthew.)
Jesus' Sacrifice was not a blanket forgiveness of all believers' sins of all time. That is a new and novel idea, from the 16th century or later, amounting to a doctrine of man.
The best description I have heard.
Hebrews 9:27 " And it is appointed unto men once to die,but after this judgement"
"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness." 1 John 1:9
(Of course there are varying degrees of the above and everyone is judged only by God)
And why do we need purgatory?… Everyone who is saved but is not ready for heaven needs purgatory.

Yes and what you seem to miss here is the Lord cleans and heals the person before he walks into the celebration. A different story if the person is not a believer.
Now, most of us are not ready for heaven.
On our own , no we are not ready for heaven . With Christ in our lives then we are ready for heaven Col 2: 9-15
EVEN if we had recently gone to confession we still have what is called a “temporal inclination to sin”.

JESUS PAID IT ALL ON THE CROSS! YOU CAN’T ADD TO THE FINISHED WORK OF THE CROSS. READ YOUR BIBLE!

I don't think the Catholic Church teaches that Jesus' sacrifice on the cross was not sufficient for the salvation of sinners.

Luke 16:19-21
Jesus makes it abundantly clear that there are two distinct realms in which the souls of the dead exist. One is a place of reward, a Paradise. The other is a place of torment and suffering, where souls are separated from the Lord eternally.
NO He didn't.
Abraham's bosom and Gehenna are both parts of Sheol, the realm of the dead. Then Christ sacrificed himself and went down to Sheol himself, to stage a massive jailbreak. The Lord led the righteous departed to Heaven, emptying Abraham's bosom.

Sin is atoned for by Jesus 1 Peter 2:24

St. Catherine of Genoa (1551):
“I believe no happiness can be found worthy to be compared with that of a soul in Purgatory except that of the saints in Paradise: and day by day this happiness grows as God flows into these souls.”
In some popular prayers and devotions, and in some spiritual writings, purgatory is described as sort of a temporary hell, and differing from hell only in that those in purgatory know they will eventually go to heaven.

Dont forget that big one…🤷🏽♂
History shows us that Jesus didn't leave us a bible, - the apostles didn't tell us which books belong in the bible, - the church fathers never agreed on the 27 books of the NT through the 4th century, - not only did they not agree but their individual lists of would-be NT canons were GROWING during this time, growing in numbers of hundreds of “inspired” NT writings.

Catholics pray for the souls in purgatory
To help them into heaven.
Hell is for the true corrupt sinner. Evil.
He is a smooth talker and very effective. The Jews were given the OT. They did not and do not hold Maccabees as scripture. Rome had the audacity to add this to provide support for purgatory. The fact that Jews prayed for the dead is not biblical evidence for purgatory. Also his interpretation from Paul is deeply flawed.
Dr.Scott Hann is just the one of the hundreds of thousands former staunch anti Catholic Evangelicals who converted to Catholicism .this yr in April another breaking record of Evangelicals who converted to Catholicism here in the US.there was even a contingent from Harvard University.its not just here ,but numerous former anti Catholic Pastors in Latin American countries,Philippines ,to name a few have also converted to HIS one and only Catholic church.Dr Hann exemplifies tha saying “ Protestant chuch gets the worst Catholics ,while Catholic church gets the best Protestant”. Shall people believe you or the thousands former anti Catholic Scriptual Scholars,Historians,Theologians,Pastors,Intellectuals ,to name a few ,who are now Catholic. Many more are following their footsteps. There have even Catholics, who became anti Catholic Evangelical Pastors ,who have now reverted to Catholicism. Some of these brilliant men and women of God took several yrs of intense studying for Christian truth and found it in the church they used to believe as whore of babylon, idolators, unbiblical and all other misconceptions and lies they had about Catholicism.read, read, read History and dig deeper!just to reiterate shall we believe you or them?
The Jews that recognized Christ as the Son of God, the second person of the Trinity, DID hold Maccabees as scripture: That's why this book is in the versions of the Bible used by the apostolic churches (Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Ethiopian Orthodox)
You want to follow the teachings of the Jews who were the bad guys in the Bible?
Thanku Dr Hahn for your explanation well said .
God bless.🙏👏

I am a devout Catholic who has lived with a lot of Protestant relatives . I feel sad that they are ignorant about the theology on Purgatory and even go as far to ridicule those who pray for departed souls !
I'm similarly situated. It can be somewhat frustrating, so I just pray that they, as well as my Catholic relatives, just grow in the Spirit all the days of their lives. Because if they do, and the live long enough, they WILL become Catholic (because that is the FULLNESS of Earthly faith-practice).
I agree! Protestants CANNOT differentiate the difference of "Praying" FOR the dead vs. PRAYING TO THE DEAD, (NECROMANCY) as the falsely claim. The first is a humble request for the happy repose of our dearly beloved and the second on, (Praying TO the dead) is seeking information, a Mortal sin and strictly condemned by the Catholic Church.

Read 2 Maccabees 12:39-46
While it's not in most Protestant Bibles, it's been a part of the original Bible and all Catholic Bibles since about 397AD. It was the Old Testament that the Apostles quoted from.
Matthew 12:30-32 (RSV2CE): 30 ¶ He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters. 31 ¶ Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.† 32 And whoever says a word against the Son of man will be forgiven; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.
Here, Jesus is talking about the forgiving of sins. You cannot be forgiven in hell and there is no sin in heaven so obviously Jesus is talking about somewhere else where sins are forgiven. Obviously He's talking about purgatory
You should know that Christianity is not based on only what is found in the Bible but what God has taught us through His Word, found in both oral traditions and written traditions. While I used to be a Bible only Protestant, the Word of the Lord came to me and showed me I was in error. Satan can deceive others and I was deceived many years by being in a Protestant church. Protestantism isn't from God even though members profess love for our Lord Jesus Christ.

Ahhh yes the chosen verses to presnt praying for the dead , not found anywhere else in scripture ! So maybe you should read the context of 2 Maccabee's 12:?
Purgatory has no basis in scripture and when you take a bit of time read up on all the verses used to convince you of purgatory ,and then make sure that the context of those verses prove what the cherry picked verses are correct? 2 Maccabee's 12 :
1. who died
2. why did they die?
3. who killed them ?
4.did they repent of their sins before they died ?
5. Was Judas correct in praying for them to attain godliness?
Now find in the new testament where un repentant sinners get prayed into heaven?
Matthew 12:30-32 (RSV2CE): 30 ¶ He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters. 31 ¶ Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.† 32 And whoever says a word against the Son of man will be forgiven; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.
The context is showing you that Blasphemy is the main subject and it will not be forgiven in this age or the one to come , not now not ever. There is no forgiveness of sins unless asked for / repented of and the new testament is quite clear on the matter.
Here, Jesus is talking about the forgiving of sins. You cannot be forgiven in hell and there is no sin in heaven so obviously Jesus is talking about somewhere else where sins are forgiven. Obviously He's talking about purgatory
So your conclusion does not include life on earth where you confess your sins and God removes all your sins and Jesus atones for all of your sins.

2 Thessalonians 2:15 (RSV2CE): 15 ¶ So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter.
And now we have the written word that we can read and quote from . Oral is no longer used or required.

AMEN!!!
If you're in Purgatory, you are already saved by the merits of Christ on the Cross.
If anything, it would make me more embarrassed."
Why should you be embarassed other than it being an attack on your pride? The Apostles certainly weren't. They rejoiced in the fact that they were suffering in the name of the Lord, for the would share in His glory.
"So they went on their way from the presence of the Council, rejoicing that they had been considered worthy to suffer shame for His name." Acts 5:41
"But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel. 16 I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.” Acts 9:15-16
"Now if we are children, then we are heirs-heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory." Romans 8:17
"For what credit is there if, when you sin and are harshly treated, you endure it with patience? But if when you do what is right and suffer for it you patiently endure it, this finds favor with God." 1 Peter 2:20
"For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ. 6 If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. 7 And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort." 2 Corinthians 1:5-7
There's also an entire chapter in 2 Corinthians where Paul boasts in his own sufferings.
"It is also a mistake to believe that anything less than eternal suffering on my part is enough for me to pay for even one little sin against God’s holiness. "
You would be correct.
Ever! Only Christ."
Correct.

And his righteous is more than enough for even me.

We agree. We agree, once again, *Purgatory is part of the gift of Salvation* it isn't a 'second chance to atone' it's simply the final process of sanctification that God gave us. He makes us perfect in this way.

Yes, and pride is a sin.

And I'm actually proclaiming the opposite of being proud.
Except, once again that's not how Purgatory works.

So Why then did Christ Have to Die, what is your answer please.?
"...that they may be ONE..." and here are many in the comments squabbling about who is the MOST correct... accept that your understanding is limited, and sincerely seek Truth, instead of purely arguing to validate your viewpoint. whether you agree or disagree with the Catholic doctrine of Purgatory, or the language used to justify and teach the doctrine, seeking the Truth that lead to the doctrine will do far more good than simply bashing the doctrine because your particular denomination's indoctrinational model disagrees. be ONE body with many parts... even if you don't speak the same language... the foot perceives Truth differently than the eyes and ears... perhaps you are a finger or toe trying to understand Truth meant for the nose or mouth... be the person Jesus calls YOU to be: repent, love God, love others, live accordingly... and remember that when one part suffers, all suffer, and when one part is honored, all can rejoice with it. Rejoice in Truth. Peace be with you Church.
No where in the New Testament does it say that we are called to pray the dead into heaven like they did in the Old Testament. Also 1 Corinthians 3 is not at all talking about purgatory. I suggest you read 1 Corinthians from the beginning to understand the context.
You didn’t listen to Dr Hahn. The translator of Biblical truth misses much if not a student of ancient languages. Protestants (I was a former evangelical) stand on their Bible’s which are incomplete. Listen to him again with an open mind and pray for revelation. Reading the early Church fathers began my journey back to Catholicism.
May God open the eyes of your heart to the truth about church unity. REREAD JOHN 17:20-23. Disunity in these times when satan is attacking is not the time to quibble over jots and tittles.
They prayed for the dead because the dead are in the grave (nowhere else) until the Day of Resurrection. They didn't pray one "into" heaven because NO ONE goes to heaven or ever has or ever will. We resurrect on the New Earth.

Please Catholics, read the Bible with the help of The Holy Spirit, Jesus only talked about Hell and heaven. Mostly hell . Repent is for now it's too late after your last breath. If I was the devil I would want people to think there is a second chance and there is venial sins that does not end in death.
Limbo is gone for the babies, Pugotory is just barely hanging in there for now !for the rest of us 😅
Limbo was a terrible catholic lie. I come from a catholic family. My nan had to have her baby buried in unconsecrated ground because she was an unmarried mother. I don't believe in purgatory either. I believe in Jesus and his undying love for us to be saved.

Limbo was a theology opinion of some, but not all Catholics, and was not a doctrine, so can be accepted or not. Purgatory is a doctrine that cannot be changed, because God established that final purging process. It is a great merciful thing, because most of us children of God die with some lingering attachments to sin and need to have them purged, else we couldn't otherwise get into heaven. (That doesn't apply to un-repentant mortal sinners. Their destination is hell.)
Hebrews 9:27 " And it is appointed unto men once to die,but after this judgement"
Purgatory doesn't exist. We need to get right with the Lord in this life, no second chances after death.
"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness." 1 John 1:9
Purgatory because the righteousness of Jesus was not enough!
I’m just trying to learn because I don’t know, but do you think that after you die you’re completely righteous to stand in the presence of God?

Purgatory ? No such thing in scripture . Jesus died and rose from the dead in our behalf . Those who believe in him will not perish but have everlasting life . No need for purgatory non sense . Jesus said it is finished. Satan is a deceiver and is alive and well in the catholic cult
