Hi some guys are complaining about their shocks being to soft, to make them a pit harder adjust the bottom unit by lifting the spring up and half turn out of groove makes it harder, it works for me and dont cost nothing.
Why does everyone who buys a small bike insist on trying to get them to do what a larger bike does? Yes you hit 70mph, but you revved the piss out of the little motor to do it, and you will most certainly wear it out a whole lot quicker. If you wanna do 70 mph all day long then buy something 500cc's or larger.
Remember that the speedo gets it's reading from the gearbox, not the front tire... Monkey's speedo lies 10-11% from the get go. Now after the sprocket change, it lies 17-18% Your 55 was actually 50. And your 70 is now actually 62

It is a false reading from the speedo. All Japanese bikes indicate a speed of about 10% faster than true speed. Use a GPS on your phone to get a more accurate speed. I have a friend who was riding his Honda Shadow 750 with me last week, and I'm riding an old Harley Sportster, which has a very accurate speedometer. After the ride, he ask me why I was going "so fast!". Lol.. He said dude, you were doing like 78mph the whole time! Lol.. In reality I was only doing the speed limit, which was 70.
10 months and no reply! Easy to know how the top speed was achieved. With 16% error, which is roughly the margin you get by going down 1 tooth in the front.
The question is, where is the speed sensor takes it’s data from? If it is from the wheel speed, then yes you go at the speed it displays. But if the sensor is reading the transmission output shaft speed. Then what you see on the display is wrong.

The freeway comparison was post pipe installation. That the comparison there was apples to apples. Really, the pipe did not do much to the top speed as we did not open up the air box. Should have been mentioned though... you are correct. Thanks for watching! -- Kyle & the Chap Moto Team
Ok, it begs the question. If it is so simple to get an extra 15mph, why didn’t Honda ship this beauty with the 14 T sprocket? I imagine they are aware of the advantage. I cannot even phantom Honda engineers being unaware of this. Perhaps there was a reason for the 15T. Just scratching my head here.....
Changing to a 14t sprocket makes the speedometer inaccurate. It will indicate you're going faster than you really are. Maybe it gained him 3-4 mph faster, but definitely not 15.
OK, so that sounds good but there’s a big butt there. Did you actually gain more speed or is your speedometer not showing correctly now it’s like putting a bigger set of tires on your truck. Your speedometer won’t read right no more.
My old 450 nighthawk got 70 honest mpg . It would use more if I ran it needlessly hard . But just regular computing at 55-70 mph it got 70 mpg . I checked it nearly every 3 gal . It held about .5 gal in reserve. I had 0 problems exceeding the speed limit with it . 9,000 rpm machine , with a 6 speed . It was alot of machine to take off road tho .
Best option is 36T rear sprocket.... why? Because 14T is too short and also in the ABS models the ABS light turns ON detecting there is a lot of speed difference between front wheel and rear wheel. In all Europe all models from Grom to Monkey since 2016 all models came with mandatory ABS. And I think in America also is a optional. So you need to inform properly.
Impossible to have speed difference between front and rear wheel unless the wheels are different diameter or your spinning a wheel, has nothing to do with gearing.
@@petebusch9069 The bike is designed with front wheel ABS signal to work along with 15/34 sprockets, and the speedo signal is taken from the gearbox. SO... if you put a smaller front sprocket or taller sprocket on rear wheel, the gearbox will be spinning FASTER than before, and front wheel ABS signal will be different than gearbox speedo signal and it will detect anomaly turning ABS light ON.
Hello, it's always best to stick with stock setup if you are concerned with the performance and longevity. But some people like to tinker and modify, which is fine, but can come with some issues that may need require more attention from the rider.
Kinda only depends how how you’re riding I would guess cause if you’re pinning it wide open with the og sprocket and then not with the new 14 tooth it might help
Even in stock form, I wouldn't expect that little 125cc engine to last forever being run wide open almost all the time. It's not going to break it, but it will definitely increase wear and tear.
I don't understand why your bike is so slow? The UK bikes I know of and mine included will hit over 70mph indicated. I've had 76mph on the flat with a slight tail wind. My Speedo reads about 4mph faster than GPS.
Same for the Honda super cub American one seems a lot slower...in fact i was thinking of upping the front sprocket (from 15 to 16 tooth ) to relax the motor at top end...
Are American ones lower than eu market ones, because everyone I know that has these are hitting anything between 65 - 70 mph as standard. Something doesn't sound right if yours only hitting 50mph
And I know they're doing those speeds because they are riding next to me on my Street Triple, I'm seriously considering selling my 675 and getting one of these for a commuter bike where I live, as I have too many bike medium and big bikes
Thanks for watching! Check out this video I created after the sprocket install: th-cam.com/video/6h-9rX3y9_I/w-d-xo.html GPS speed was high 60's mph. Super fun little bike!
Yep. My completely stock Monkey will accelerate uphill in 4th to 60mph and hits an indicated 76mph on the flat with a tail wind. I'm not changing my gearing!
@@TonesAtTinwell I'm with you. 180 lbs and my stock monkey was hitting 65 on a flat. It zips straight up to 50 mph in a few seconds. It's getting to 60mph that takes a min. Lol
This is interesting but resonates with me because when I went to bigger tires on my tacoma it became slower and 4th gear was faster than 5th gear. Thanks for posting, guess I’m buying a 14 tooth front sprocket for the monkey bike.
Hello, messing with the gear ratios is one way to get a motorcycle to perform as you desire. You can also improve air flow at the intake, run a different exhaust etc.
I'm sure you know by now that the speedo is controlled by the transmission, not the front tire wheel speed, so all your measurements are going to be wrong. Although, it's likely true that you'll gain speed overall because Honda keeps the top gear tall and out of the powerband for sound/economy regulations, but you're probably much closer to about 60 than 70.
Hello, we didn't dyno the bike, but did notice that the change made the power more usable across the board. Better performance first-third with first and second gear shortened up a little which helped with third gear/fourth gear.
What other mods did you do to the engine performance wise though? The bike looked completely stock in the pre sprocket video and it had at least an aftermarket exhaust on it in the after sprocket change ride.
Our opinion is, that while the Super Cub is a very cool retro looking machine, the Monkey is more versatile--for customization and terrain. Plus there's less bodywork to deal with/replace/repair in the event of a crash.
@@chaparralmotorsports Yeah, informative video, but the lane filtering/splitting was hard to watch, cringe-worthy and wreckless. Hard to believe that would be legal anywhere. But, leave it to Cali...
@@chaparralmotorsports is it even legal to take the monkey on the 210 fwy in CA? I thought there was a 150cc limit? Just wondering as I am getting a monkey soon.
Hi Tj, if I recall correctly, both the 150R and 150R Expert use a 15T front/counter shaft sprocket. The rear sprocket on the two models is different. The 150R uses a 50T and the 150R Expert uses a 56T--at least that's the case with the late model units. The Monkey comes stock with a 15T counter shaft (that's all that was changed in this video) and we changed it to a 14T JT Sprocket. Thanks for watching.
Am I seeing correctly? Are you passing between cars in the same lane as you? If so, how is that safe or legal? Thanks for the info but that was a scary ride.😬
Hello, it is called lane splitting or lane filtering. It is a legal practice here in California and is becoming legal for motorcycle travel in more and more states.
Hi Twin, it a toss up. Some people wont be bothered by the speedo or they'll calibrate their speedo accordingly. Others might not like how the bike rides/performs with the new gearing. It's really a matter of preference.
It's not freeway legal as it can not do 65 mph. After the exhaust and gearing... I was totally ripping the freeway - but only when I knew traffic was "slower" than I could go. They are DOT approved.
Is it safe to ride the monkey on long rides (50 miles or longer) with the RPM's so high? Do you think that will damage the motor? I had the 14t sprocket on a long ride recently and I hated hearing that thing scream the whole way. I liked having the 4th gear (overdrive) in the original sprocket. Should I put the original back on?
Another post pointed out that it's off the gearbox, so the speedo showing 70mph was inaccurate. Something like 7.9% increase in "speed" that displays on the speedo. So others suggested gauging speed by GPS instead.
Hello, this article may help you. There is a chart at the end that shows you the difference changing the sprockets make: www.chapmoto.com/blog/2011/04/25/adjusting-your-drive-ratio-changing-your-sprockets-for-maximum-performance/
@@chaparralmotorsports Turns out it's a break in. When you first get the bike it's slow during the break in miles. After a certain mileage the computer opens up %100. Keeps from people blowing the motor to soon and makes the bike less likely to breakdown. Smart thinking by honda if you ask me
I tried the 14t and ended up putting it back to stock. What I learned was lost top end speed and gained low end torque not to mention lost fuel mileage. At 45 mph the motor was screaming more then stock. The speedometer is now off and putting more miles on the bike then it actually has. So there’s a bit of a trade off switching the sprocket. I ride most of the time around 40-50 mph so for me it’s not worth changing.

Question : if Honda Monkey can run up to about 60ish MPH after modification, my question, is that allow driving US interstate highway?? Appreciate & thank you
Hello, Andre, thanks for watching our video. No the bike is still not legal for driving on the highways/freeways--at least not in California. This is because of the bike's engine displacement. In California a motorcycle or scooter has to have an engine of at least 150cc to be legal on the highway.
I am sure the engine would not pull to 70 mph without hitting the rev limiter. Any way now the speedometer would be inaccurate. Noticed a GPS was not used. Fail.
To get similar results from switching rear sprocket you would need to actually add multiple teeth. And the part would be more expensive so it doesnt make much sense to do.
adding teeth to the rear sprocket is the correct way to go, using smaller sprocket on the front will cause your chain to wear out much faster and more likely to break. however when going with a larger sprocket on the rear, you will also have to buy a new ,longer chain. this is the way to go if you want to be safe.
I ordered the sprocket immediately upon completion of this video. Absolutely the best ang for buck of any upgrade on any motorcycle that I have or had. Thanks for the great video.

Is it possible to convert the Monkey to a 250cc motor? 125cc 4 strokes is too weak.
Almost anything is possible when it comes to modifying/customizing motorcycles.
Great watch ! Nice and simple install.
Thanks! 👍
Impact wrench for removal would make it much easier and put less strain on the gears.
If you have one on hand, yes.
I don't know why you're not talking about, in the first video, you have the stock exhaust on it. In the second video, you have a aftermarket pipe.
You should do an update on the 2022 monkey version for this upgrade, considering it has 5 instead of 4 gears :)
maybe when we get some in stock.
@@misstrunchbull3953 You're a weird fella, aren't you
OK, so that sounds good but there’s a big butt there. Did you actually gain more speed or is your speedometer not showing correctly now it’s like putting a bigger set of tires on your truck. Your speedometer won’t read right no more.
Hello, great point.
Wow that's really good. Thanks for sharing.
Leave chain lube in the casing, it traps junk away from the chain and sprockets.
Thanks for your tip Jay.

You get used to it after years of riding.
speed sensor is on the gearbox outputshaft... if you change the front sprocket 1 teeth smaller it shows 7.5% more speed .......
Thanks. We'll take note of that for future reference.
Thank you for your feedback and for your caution Esteban. I did not think that ABS would be effected... interesting.
Impossible to have speed difference between front and rear wheel unless the wheels are different diameter or your spinning a wheel, has nothing to do with gearing.
That is impossible if you think about it.

Looks awesome ! Question what will this do to engine temp.and engine life ! Thank you ... Enjoy .
Hello, it's always best to stick with stock setup if you are concerned with the performance and longevity. But some people like to tinker and modify, which is fine, but can come with some issues that may need require more attention from the rider.
@@chaparralmotorsports Thank you , keep up the good work !
@@trevorjameson3213 Thank you ...
Maybe the air fuel mixture for EPA numbers.
All you commenters should be quoting your WEIGHT so your speed runs can be put into perspective. Pounds AND kilos, please.
@Mario Torres Ouch !! That was harsh....
Thats because miles are shorter in the UK!
BTW Monkey 2022 already have a 14T sproket. With a top speed of 111km/h for me as 150lbs
Thanks for pointing that. Thanks for watching. Ride safe
Riding that tiny thing between cars on the freeway. You have a lot of faith in your fellow man, for some reason I don't understand.
You get used to it, just like riding any other motorcycle on the highway.
I did not see a 2022 option?

Thanks for sharing
For a small engine, this makes sense sometimes.
Hi Brian, right, gotta get some pick up where ever you can with these things. Thanks for watching.
I wonder if that would help my new 2023 Monkey. Currently topping out at 53 mph. Can't even get to where I need to go.
Yes it was overlooked. Thank you for the comments and valuable insight. Ride safe.
Did the torque do DOWN since the top end increased. I’d see riding this on off-road trails and hills. Any low-end issues?
Hello, we didn't dyno the bike, but did notice that the change made the power more usable across the board. Better performance first-third with first and second gear shortened up a little which helped with third gear/fourth gear.
How much is the 2024 honda mongkey?
And how much is the sprocket upgrade service?
Hello, please contact our vehicle sales department and service department for pricing (909) 889-2761. Thank you.
Did it affect the fuel economy?
What other mods did you do to the engine performance wise though? The bike looked completely stock in the pre sprocket video and it had at least an aftermarket exhaust on it in the after sprocket change ride.
Hello, yea at some point we installed a Yoshimura exhaust on the Monkey.
I know they are two different style bikes but I am looking at either the Monkey or Supercub, What is your take?
Our opinion is, that while the Super Cub is a very cool retro looking machine, the Monkey is more versatile--for customization and terrain. Plus there's less bodywork to deal with/replace/repair in the event of a crash.
That is some interesting driving on the highway, I must admit...
Is that even legal to just weave left end right through the traffic?
Hello Paul, lane filtering/splitting is legal in California. Thanks for watching.
@@chaparralmotorsports Ok. Thanks for your reaction.
@@chaparralmotorsports Yeah, informative video, but the lane filtering/splitting was hard to watch, cringe-worthy and wreckless. Hard to believe that would be legal anywhere. But, leave it to Cali...

Loctite isn't a bad idea.
Would be super helpful if you included socket sizes during the process.
Ok, we'll keep that in mind. Thanks for watching.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣not to difficult to figure it out, if one is too small, go up a size until you find the right one🤣🤣🤣
which one did you use the CRF150R or the CRF150R expert sprocket?
Hi Tj, if I recall correctly, both the 150R and 150R Expert use a 15T front/counter shaft sprocket. The rear sprocket on the two models is different. The 150R uses a 50T and the 150R Expert uses a 56T--at least that's the case with the late model units. The Monkey comes stock with a 15T counter shaft (that's all that was changed in this video) and we changed it to a 14T JT Sprocket. Thanks for watching.
so why Honda used the wrong sprocket on the bike???
No, Honda used the best suitable sprocket for a wide scenario of riding styles. We changed up the sprocket to see the difference in performance.
Would this be nesasary or beneficial in the five speed in the 2022s ? I'd like to see that put to the test.
Hello, we have yet to test ride a new model, we will put that into consideration. Thank you.
Would the speedometer not read wrong after the sprocket change though? I.e 70mph on the speedo may not actually be 70mph?
good point. We should have used GPS to monitor speed.
I swapped mine and it feels quicker, but since it screws up your speedo wouod u say this is worth doing it still?
Hi Twin, it a toss up. Some people wont be bothered by the speedo or they'll calibrate their speedo accordingly. Others might not like how the bike rides/performs with the new gearing. It's really a matter of preference.
Now put a 1 tooth larger rear sprocket, and see how that effects it.
Hi Joey, thanks for the suggestion. We'll work on it.
Great video brother!

My 2023 monkey comes with 14 tooth sprocket factory.
Good point, but this was an older model. Thanks for watching.
so what the best combination sprocket for 110cc engine motorcycle?
Hello, it depends on what you want out of the bike or the type of terrain/riding you do.
@@chaparralmotorsports i want both of speed and power and thank you
From what I understand this bike is not freeway legal in California, is the bike freeway legal in other states?
It's not freeway legal as it can not do 65 mph. After the exhaust and gearing... I was totally ripping the freeway - but only when I knew traffic was "slower" than I could go. They are DOT approved.
you are correct, California freeway legal is 150cc and up.
If you're going to be riding long distances then you
you'll probably want to go with the stock gearing for a little better ride.
Do you have stock air filter?stock exhaust?maybe the bike needs more air flow
I have a 2005 Honda Super Splender had same engine as Monkey,
Had a gear ration of 42/14=3.
Whats is exact gear ratio on your Honda Monkey now?
Al final, en 2022, 5 marchas ..
Yup
Curious, since the bike speed is derived from the gearbox output shaft - Did you re-calibrate the speedo?
Hello, sorry we did not.
But what kind of difference would it make with the 5sp trans?
Hello, sorry we haven not tested with the 5-speed.
But is the speedo driven off the front wheel or electronic off the gearbox?
Another post pointed out that it's off the gearbox, so the speedo showing 70mph was inaccurate. Something like 7.9% increase in "speed" that displays on the speedo. So others suggested gauging speed by GPS instead.
@@zocmedia1869 yup, the speed he reckons it does will be totally inaccurate then.
Curious why you sold your Monkey. Not fast enough?
Hello, it was a loaner from Honda for some videos.
If I do the same thing to my dirt bike, will increase the top speed too?
Hello, this article may help you. There is a chart at the end that shows you the difference changing the sprockets make: www.chapmoto.com/blog/2011/04/25/adjusting-your-drive-ratio-changing-your-sprockets-for-maximum-performance/
I believe once the bikes broke in a little bit it loosens up everything and get a little more speed out of it
Yeah that can account for a little bit of improved performance in some cases. Thanks for watching.
@@chaparralmotorsports Turns out it's a break in. When you first get the bike it's slow during the break in miles. After a certain mileage the computer opens up %100. Keeps from people blowing the motor to soon and makes the bike less likely to breakdown. Smart thinking by honda if you ask me
All you commenters should be quoting your WEIGHT so your speed runs can be put into perspective. Pounds AND kilos, please.
Hi Brian, good point. Thanks for watching.
Speedometer is off due to the sprocket change… need to recalibrate it with a speed doctor.
Got it. Thanks for watching.
Are you running a speedo healer? I’m curious what the actual speed is.
Hello, sorry with this mod we were not.
I tried the 14t and ended up putting it back to stock. What I learned was lost top
end speed and gained low end torque not to mention lost fuel mileage. At 45 mph the motor was screaming more then stock. The speedometer is now off and putting more miles on the bike then it actually has. So there’s a bit of a trade off switching the sprocket. I ride most of the time around 40-50 mph so for me it’s not worth changing.
Hello, thanks for sharing your findings. Yeah it is a trade off, so it really depends on what you want /are looking for from the bike.
Thanks. Helped me decide on this mod.

Hello, Andre, thanks for watching our video. No the bike is still not legal for driving on the highways/freeways--at least not in California. This is because of the bike's engine displacement. In California a motorcycle or scooter has to have an engine of at least 150cc to be legal on the highway.

@@chaparralmotorsports Hi, What will be the effect if 13 tooth will be used?

Thanks for the catch. Ride safe.
When you say sproket I think of that saturday night live skit called sprockets where the weird German guy starts dancing
hahaha. Pretty good.
Why not change the rear sprocket instead? Drop one tooth at the back?
To get similar results from switching rear sprocket you would need to actually add multiple teeth. And the part would be more expensive so it doesnt make much sense to do.
Rave, nice explanation. Thank you.
You would need to add roughly 2 teeth to the rear vs taking away 1 in the front.
Rear sprocket / Front sprocket x the wheel size = gear inches.
adding teeth to the rear sprocket is the correct way to go, using smaller sprocket on the front will cause your chain to wear out much faster and more likely to break. however when going with a larger sprocket on the rear, you will also have to buy a new ,longer chain. this is the way to go if you want to be safe.
