    I'm so glad I stumbled across this video. I was looking to pickup a used one that's not in working condition for cheap (150 Canadian) but I think I'll pass on it now. It looks like a good printer, but it's already showing its age two years ago, I doubt it's gotten better now.

      @@ChrisRiley Hi Chris. I recently got an R1+. The two z axis microswitches were kind of hanging and the 2 brass travel nuts were out of the Z axis housings, I put them back together. I may be wrong but these don't seem like home limits as they are relative, position wise to the Z axis, not the bed. I assume they are for 'truing up' the dual z stepper positions.
      If this is the case and there is no absolute z limit, it must rely on sudden z stepper current spike to detect bed contact or an accelerometer like the Rostock Max.
      I am using S3D to manually control the printer. X and Y work and home fine. Z will go up and down but when I try to home it just goes up about 8mm, keeps going up from there. Maybe S3D is using wrong g-code?
      Thanks

    • @ChrisRiley
      @ChrisRiley  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shingabiss I donated my R1 a while back, but if I remember correctly, it homes each Z motor individually, then uses those to Z switches to do it's leveling, not the best design. Check M119, my guess is the switches think they are triggered. Maybe the wrong leg on the switch got hooked up.

  • @RandomGreymane

    Chris - thanks for the current review of the R1. I have an older R1+ that has had multiple problems and has a front control I put on it so I could better monitor prints with and print standalone. . Can you possibly post your settings for your slicer? The changes you made in Marlin? The version I’m using of Marlin is probably pretty old but was current at the time I installed the control panel. Regardless thanks again!

    • @ChrisRiley
      @ChrisRiley  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching, yeah, I didn't really change Marlin that much, just the jerk values. You can do that with a M205 X10.00 eeprom command followed by an M500 to save it. I will get you my slicers settings.

    Is it good printer to buy in 2018 while there are many companies available. I don't want to spend time in learning much and want a printer less than $500, kindly advise me. Also can I use PETG and metal filaments in Robo R1 +

    • @ChrisRiley
      @ChrisRiley  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a really tough question now a days. I would say no the R1 isn't your machine. Anything in the sub $500 range there is going to be some assembly and a leaning curve. Really a Prusa machine would be the best cheapest printer to buy that gives on all the software and hardware configured right out on the box ready to go, but me are talking close to a $1000. You can probably fo PETG easy enough on the r1, meta fill would take a nozzle swap. Any machine you get to do a lot of metal fill will require a harder nozzle.
      I know this isn't a clear cut answer, but I hope it helps.

    Great review. I am pleased you aren't "down" on this printer. I picked one of these up in a home-shop liquidation sale two years ago. I have 3d printers at work so I didn't really get into this one that much, until recently working from home. It goes into lala land once in a while, the micro-switch-based z-offset (bed-leveling) calibration seems error-prone, so you have to watch the start of a print to make sure it didn't go into the weeds. Overall, pleased with this but I don't have high standards for prints. Mine suffers from the same shortcomings you mention. Fan noise is very high.. Hairspray works great for adhesion, my prints have been coming out adhered to the glass well. It's a cute little printer, like the R2D2 of 3D printing.

    • @ChrisRiley
      @ChrisRiley  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ha, I kinda like these little guys, not sure why, maybe it is the R2D2 aspect that make me like it. :)

      @@ChrisRiley I have three printers running right now, 24/7. The little Robo is beating out the Makerbot Z18 and Replicator+ - ha. I set them up for drag races and the Robo is consistent, no raft. The Mbots have to have a raft, I don't even look at them funny once I get prints working from them because they can start warping parts if anything changes the least. The raft on the Rep+ takes over an hour, and on the Z18 is over two hours. Go Robo...

    Hello Chris, I've had my Robo Printer for a few tears now, and after getting some nice prints with it, there's an issue I cannot resolve. When I try to connect to the printer, I get a message: "Port COM3 is being used". I tried connecting from all three ports available, and I get the same thing. I'm not a computer wiz, so I'm not sure what more to do. Can you please help? I will appreciate it.

    • @ChrisRiley
      @ChrisRiley  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think all of those run a RAMPS board. If could be any issue with your MEGA board. If you open device manager with the printer unplugged and expand com port, then plug the printer in, does the new COM port show up? Also, make sure Cura isn't running when you try it.

    Great review, I for one really appreciate 'level playing field' reviews (Average Joe Purchase/Use Experience.). I do think it's lame for a refurbed unit to NOT come with a power cord. That's crazy in my book.

    • @ChrisRiley
      @ChrisRiley  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks RJ! Agreed, the fact it didn't come with anything was a little surprising. I like to look at these printer as well as the new ones just to see where we came from and where we are going. The R1 isn't the new hot machine that people are going to run and buy, but is definitely an interesting machine from our recent 3D printing past.
