    All upgrades in this video were printed using colorfabb PLA/PHA filament from printedsolid.com. It's fantastic material!
    What's up Nerdgasm fans! This video will show you all of the things I've done since I received my Robo 3D printer to get it printing reliability with no hassles. Out of the box the printer never really performed well for me but after I tracked down the problems, made some tweaks and printed some upgrades I'm happy to report it works like a charm and is not giving me anymore problems! I hope that the information in this video is useful to you early adopters and helps you maximize your print quality when using this inexpensive printer. Don't give up guys, just like all technology like this tweaking is just a part of the experience and you will be very proud with the results once you do.

    One thing I forgot to mention in the video is to use 'Furnace Cement (from Amazon)' to secure the thermister (heat probe) to the print head instead of Kapton tape, it gives a much better connection between the censor and the block and the temps are far more stable as a result!
    Special thanks to Harrison V and Braydon M for being a source of information and support while I got this Robo3D figured out!
    When I first received the printer and unboxed it I had several problems I had to trouble shoot and figure out ranging from the bed leveling issues to inconsistent feeding issues. Over the weeks with help from the internet and the guys at Robo3D and PrintedSolid I was able to tweak, upgrade and tinker to get this printer to become a solid work horse just like my Ultimaker (But not as fast, but that is expected).
    The biggest problem with this printed I have found is the print head. The stock print head on the ABS model (can't speak for the PLA model) seems to have a problem with the tube inside cracking causing oozing or temperature problems leading to material extruding too hot or too cool. I also had problems with it jamming and clearing a jam from it was a nightmare. I found upgrading to an E3D print head was the best solution since this print head can handle any material and has not jammed on me once yet!
    I hope this was helpful for you guys, please let me know in the comments if this solved your problems or if you have other problems I don't address in the video (maybe I can work with them and address them in a future video). I also would like to know if you found better solutions to some of the problems then I did. This show is an independent production of Jerry Berg (aka Barnacules). Thanks for posting this video. I love my Robo3D, but I ran into the exact problems you talked about. I ended up ordering a new E3D head today since mine will only run about 2 minutes before clogging now (was working like a champ for about 4 weeks). Your updates have truly helped it all.

    Just unboxed my new Robo, and the folks over there are listening, most of your upgrades are already addressed. Spool holder is in a different location, Z-axis rods continue into supports at the inside top of the housing, and the main drive gear for the print head has no slop at all. There is not a switch in the location you showed, so I can't speak to that yet, and have yet to start a print but will update when I do. Keep keeping them straight over there!

    Thank you for this video! I just got the robo 3d r1plus, and had some issues that you described in your video. They have since added a stabilizer in the top for the rods and I'm sure a bunch of other upgrades (fixes). Thank you for the spool! Better design than the one that comes with it in my opinion. Will be printing this next. Great Video.

    Great video. Thanks for your contributions to the community!
    One note, I'd suggest that you modify your Z rod stabilizer so that its adjustable. No two printers will have the same tolerances and those rods need to be super accurate to prevent jamming as the z axis moves up. If you make the stabilizers adjustable then users can run their z axis all the way up THEN tighten the stabilizers so the spacing will be near perfect.
    If you install this stabilizer as is, make sure you run your z axis all the way up to make sure it doesn't jam.
    Good stuff. I love that a $700 printer with a few modifications can make really good prints.
    Thanks again,
    Tony

    I've some questions about the endheat installation:
    1- Did you flash some firmware on the robo 3d to use a high temperature?
    2- Did you fabricate a new support for the E3D hotend or the actual support fit well?
    3- About the conection, did you just cut the wires out and connected them with the new E3D hotend wires?... and connect independently the fan directly from the power?

    you should have a look at the bq hephestos 2 printer, its a DIY 3d printer but has a lot of good points in it, like the extruder comes with all the fans on it, it auto-levels and checks the distance from the platform before each print and stuff. I have one and I love it, not too expensive either

    I'm planning on getting the ABS model, and I've been looking at your modifications, i like and understand most of them but have a couple of questions like for instance, where you got the rods you used to stabilize the z axis and how these are mounted on to the actual printer ( not the bottom or top, but the actual head rails... its the best way i can describe it... i assume thats how it was done) and also, where exactly does the thermister need to be secured onto the printer, i've tried to extrapolate this from the video, but i'm not even sure what wire i'm looking at, i thank you for your help!

    It's also a great idea to reduce z wobble by printing a guide and glueing a bearing on the end. Then use it to stabilize the Z axis threaded rod from wobbling as it moves up. It eliminates banding as your prints get taller.

    Just got my robo and I'm having exactly the same issues. Thanks so much for sharing, you've been super helpful and linking all the 3d parts is a bonus! Can't wait to flip the z-axis and try "on the fly leveling".
    I'm having alot of trouble with PLA sticking to painters tape, would you say hairspray is better?

    • @Barnacules
      @Barnacules  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the Extreme Hold hairspray works fantastic. Spray it on while the bed is heating up and let it get tacky and start your print. I've yet to have something come unstuck. And when it cools it usually just pops right off.

    • @micwallace
      @micwallace 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Barnacules Nerdgasm , I'll give some hairspray a go. I flipped the z switch this morning and did some on the fly leveling. Seems to be working much better now, can't wait to print some mods and get it working even better. Thanks so much for your help!

    Hi jerry, I am not exactly a master of 3d printing, I was wondering whether I could use the v6 hot end with the fan holder, or whether you would recommend to just go with a v5. So, after watching your videos, I'm seriously considering getting a 3D printer because they are sooooo cool! Thanks for that Jerry. Lol I was considering getting this printer, mainly because of the cost (which compared to other ones is much more reasonable, especially considering that it would be my first printer). I have to say though that watching this video has put me off slightly as it does seem to be a flawed product. In particular replacing the print head doesn't look the most straight forward of procedures and I find it a little daunting to be having to mess around like that if I was to spend the money on the printer in the first place. Would you still recommend the Robo as a good, entry level 3D printer?

    Hi Jerry I was directed to your videos from another maker in the 3d community.... I have a few questions and comments on your video. First I would like to say JOB WELL DONE (tip of the hat) secondly I was curious as to when you got your robo printer I just received mine a few days ago, (it seems they have addressed the issue of the vertical rods) as my inner case has the spots for them to lock in on the top, as well as it has its own led lighting in it. Mine also came with a newer version material holder that locks into the outer case itself (but I still think I like yours better) my other concern is that with mine it has a good printing head (well so far anyways) but the problem I am having is the way that they mounted the cooling fan for the head is it now drags on the actual printed part area... sometimes catching on the filament and mucking up the entire print, I wish yours was newer so as you could possibly help me solve this issue. DO you always use 70 c for your bed temp? and what temp settings do you recommend for printing with PLA and or ABS??? looking forward to your responses keep up the good work and helping us all out .

    I like your take on this particular printer. I'm curious though, if the changes you've made, rather your upgrades, have been implimented into the latest version of this particular printer. I've recently had mixed luck with two different Davinici II printers from XYZ. Ugg.... I won't even get into why I dislike those printers so much. But recently purchased this printer under the label, Robo 3D - R1 Plus +3D. It will arrive next week and I'm wondering if the company that designed this printer has implimented any of these updates into it. Like the supports for the rods. I never had "tall print" problems with my Davinci Printer, but it had a slew of other issues that I won't go into. Any advice you may have on someone getting a brand new Robo would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. I'll be watching for more vids too. I've been 3D Printing for two years now with Davinci printers as well as an Afinia H series printer at my work place. I'm eager to see how the Robo holds up.

I bought the R1 a few months ago, and pretty much everything I ve seen him do for upgrades have already been included in the model I bought. I believe came out with the R1 Plus right after I bought mine, so it may include more improvements. I ve been very happy with my R1 so far.

    has Robo 3D included any of the "mods" you suggest in the latest versions of their products? They seem like must haves at this point.

      I just bought a Robo 3D two days ago, now called the Robo 3D R1 plus. A few of the things shown here to print are added to the new design. The most important being that the guide rods reach to the top of the case and fit into holes lined with foam to keep them supported.
      This being said there is still a bit of wobble in them and could be supported better, but it is one change that is similar to these here.
      All others such as the print head change are still relevant, and the need to make a top mounted spool holder is a godsend. So even if you buy one of the new models, print a spool holder first.

    I am in the market for a 3D printer and I want one that is under $1000 with a heated bed. Would this be a good first printer? I have the time and patients to make adjustments but I don't want to have to put one together. Any suggestions/comments?

      And one more question - did you have to flash the new firmware to bypass the temperature limit for the new E3D hotend? Thanks!

    • @djpoizon2k9
      @djpoizon2k9 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Taken from the "about" section: "One thing I forgot to mention in the video is to use 'Furnace Cement (from Amazon)' to secure the thermister (heat probe) to the print head instead of Kapton tape, it gives a much better connection between the censor and the block and the temps are far more stable as a result!"

    I am not good with wires - can you get a new printing nozzel 5pcs 0.4mm Extruder Nozzle For Creality Ender 3 CR-10/10S 3D Printer Are they universal?

  • @Fyrwulf
    @Fyrwulf 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just a note, there's two versions of that double sided tape. DO NOT use the foam stuff if you care at all about stability. Also, make absolutely sure there are no air bubbles when you mount the tape, otherwise the adhesive will oxidize and stop being an adhesive.

    Hi jerry, I started a 3D printing based business and it all started with me watching one of your videos. I'm currently marketing printers to the education sector and came across Robo3d as I'm looking for a manufacture who can keep up with my growing business. Do you still have it and are you still satisfied with it? also would you recomend it for a intro level printer for a classroom... once upgraded of course.

    • @TinaPeapod
      @TinaPeapod 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +3D Drones I would suggest getting the R1 upgraded model for the classroom. Great intro level. You literally plug it in and start printing.

      3D Drones yes you should get the r1 plus the I have it u just plug in and print no mods needed
