  • In this video I fix my 2005 GMC Envoy, which is also like a Trailblazer, from a common whining noise issue. What I first thought was a power steering pump issue actually turned out to be a simple idler pulley fix. I replaced the original idler pulley with a genuine ACDelco unit and it worked perfectly. No more whining noise and it cost just about $25.

You may have noticed the pulley coming off the engine was different than the one I showed as the comparison with the bad bearing. This is because the pulley that I pulled off the motor was an old part I had laying around that I threw on while waiting for the new part to come in. The pulley I showed with the bad bearing was indeed the original part that was causing the whining noise.

After years of frustration and hundreds of dollars replace a water pump, power steering pump, alternator, etc. I came across this video and decided to give it a shot. I changed out 2 pulleys, smooth and grooved (together less than $20), and couldn't believe it. Now my engine is quiet. I cannot thank you enough!!!!!!!!!

OK, while you release belt, why didn't you check by hand the alternator bearing and power steering pump bearing and water pump bearing and compressor pulley bearing and pulley tension bearing.

Thank you for posting this video! Man I have had that noise on my 2005 silverado for months! I thought it was alternator, power steering....I could not figure it out. I came across your video and I was like oh SH*t can it be that simple? It sure was. My truck is nice and quiet again and I actually sat in it for 15 minutes running enjoying the silence. Only a $22 fix. Thanks again!

Man Jimmy... You Sir May have just ended my most aggravating thing about my 2005 Tahoe. Even though the sound wasn’t horrible to anyone else in the vehicle, it annoyed the sh*t outta me. Found my new weekend project!!

My power steering pump only makes noise when starting the vehicle in really cold temperatures. But once fluid circulates and warms up it goes away anyone got any questions

Thank you for sharing this. You saved me so much trouble shooting and money. I was certain that it was the power steering pump. I luckily came across your post, bought the idler pulley and my son put it on. Problem fixed!! Thanks again.

I want to say thank you for your video it's saved my son a lot of money thinking it was the power steering pump turns out it was the pulley

Good stuff. I will recommend a mechanic's stethoscope, about $10 at parts store, which will greatly help you pinpoint the source of a noise. Your Envoy is pretty crowded and you'd have to be VERY careful when using it. I diagnosed a bad power steering pump in my 1993 Jeep Wrangler that way.
