    I was diagnosed with SIBO but my symptoms continued after taking antibiotics. It wasn't until I got help for anxiety and PTSD that my "SIBO" resolved. I'm not saying everyone's SIBO symptoms are related to mental health, but in my case, mirtazapine and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy changed my life and improved my gut health.
    Edit: I learned how the gut and mind are connected, and that made a huge difference, too.

      My more agressive bloat was helped w antibiotics when had ibsD, xifaxin with flagyl 30days and taper down to monthly one weekly. Lactulose testing sucked! I'm very intolerant. 10yrs varied antibiotics after that but I had good luck w fodmap on antibiotics. Originally issues started after bacterial pneumonia with gastritis/gastroparesis issues. I lost 86 lb in under 6 mo!! Did better for years but then constipation took over after breaking my back at T11-T12 and pain meds. Fodmap no longer helps me at all but still leaning towards controlled carb diet. Weight back up but I live on steroids, too many antibiotics and was finally dx secondary progressive multiple sclerosis Apr 2020. The issue was always more about nerve signals but would in turn let bacteria out of control from lack of movement. Now its colonic inertia plaguing me and begging my body to consistently have a bm every 25 days. I have a sacral nerve stimulator for overactive bladder. It works great but has not influenced the bowels. Too many years of antibiotics made me worse with candida overgrowth/lack of watching sugar because I was not told I was prediabetic. If I could start over I would have been on fodmap 5 years earlier, had lactose testing done early, watched sugar, avoiding any Repeated antibiotics that were for 30day treatments and adjusted meds. Finding out I was vitamin B and D deficient in my 20s with so called fibromyalgia was a big clue. I should have been taken seriously all along by my all doctors and conditions. As the problem tilted to lack of gi motility after breaking my back they should have looked at the full picture again. I have so much more than a bad gut/bad vision. At one point I figured out 11 out of 17 were listed with constipation with the colonic inertia. My heart issues were again medication side effects and nerve signal issues. I am down ONE weekly bm if everything goes perfectly. Which is highly rare. But still relying on 2x daily zelnorm (switching again too inconsistent which is probably the nerves but its affecting hypokalemia and my heart), weekly linzess and monthly colon prepsxwhen necessary. Theres hope for people but I cant stress enough look at whole pictures not symptoms!!

    Why are so many many happy about this? SIBO was just a name for a cluster of symptoms that bother so many people on a daily basis. IBS or SIBO whatever we call it, people need real help for a very real symptoms!

    • @stargazerbird
      @stargazerbird 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      But giving a different name and prescribing antibiotics and weird regimes for it just set us all back. I have IBS. It’s perfectly manageable using the FODMAP charts. The trouble is if you try to go or stay vegan. I gave it up because I simply can’t tolerate beans lentils etc. Now do fish and eggs for protein with a lot of fruit and greens and some starches (although not sweet potatoes or artichokes) the rest of the time.

    • @ChristensenPetra
      @ChristensenPetra 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@stargazerbird I have IBS too. I can't manage it with FODMAP alone. However, I digress; it seems to me that you and like-minded think that SIBO is an excuse to eat fish or any other flesh/animal products or byproducts. It us the other way around; if you want to eat meats you need to find a valid excuse to, preferably medical to explain your behaviors. That's how it is.
      Maybe we need to strip it of its name, perceived causes and treatments in order to find the true problem. But SIBO never was a disease that made vegans lose their judgment. Keep it separated.

    *AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO ALL:* Dr. Greger isn't an expert in this complex topic you should take some of what he says with a grain of salt, no doubt there's absolutely a ton of bad information out there and SIBO is thrown around like a buzzword. Now most studies have a very narrow and simple understanding of SIBO, to complicate matters further SIBO is generally too simply defined and understood at this point. And yes it can be misdiagnosed or treated incorrectly by those who know very little about SIBO. Also don't self diagnose, talk to a Doctor first who also specializes in SIBO, it has to be a case by case basis and customized treatment plan with an expert, in some cases it can take up to 2-5 trials of treatment before SIBO is fully resolved. What we should realize with SIBO it should be looked as one component of understanding in the bigger picture as so far as it pertains to the overall health of the intestinal tract.
    A good resource to start to get a understanding of SIBO is linked below:
    *Gojiman's The SIBO Hub:* th-cam.com/play/UUTh3RWqF1sf5qJ5TKY4BDrQ.html
    *Also strongly recommend watching this comprehensive playlist on SIBO/IBS/IBD by Dr. Richard Hagmeyer D.C, CFMP:*
    th-cam.com/play/PLuRkeaETgRYrjQ4yAHwb5WaMAwqBI7lGW.html
    Hope this helps someone have a broader & fuller perspective, and be free from chronic health woes.

    Dr. Greger, I would love to see you do a video on the accuracy/efficacy of all these home microbiome tests that are available now, such as Viome, GI MAP, etc. Are they any good, or just a waste of money? Functional medicine practitioners love them, but regular MD's seem to think the information you get from them is not that useful (even if it is accurate), in creating a treatment plan.

    • @erickoepp5212
      @erickoepp5212 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      GI MAP is good. Definitely not a waste of money when a trained expert is reviewing the results and looking for specific bacteria/pathogens that can then be addressed without* antibiotics. There are few experts that excel in both parts of this.

    As a result of ulcerative colitis my colon was removed. I have a J-pouch, where the gut bacteria that normally live in the colon are nested. As a result of most likely bacterial imbalances (since the antibiotic ciprofloxacin reduces my symptoms) I have a chronic inflammation in my J-pouch. It was interesting but also worrying to hear that bacteria living in the small intestine that are supposed to be in the colon can cause issues. Since my J-pouch is made with small intestine. If that were the problem, then it would be hard to fix since these bacteria will always be in my J-pouch since my colon is gone.
