There a feeling of nostalgia for sure. I just realized something. I technically "discovered" R Tech on my own way back when I played Double Dash. It wasn't cause I was any good though, just the opposite. I didn't know how to get mini turbos, but I noticed that I could drift tighter if I spammed the shoulder button. I'd use it on the corkscrew in Wario Stadium. If I was better at the game, I'd probably have never used it or even found it, cause I'd be able to actually use mini turbos.
"The current record doesn't tell the whole story. The journey of how players got there shows the dedication, patience, and perseverance involved in setting these times." This applies to so much more than just speed-running.
Of course. However, in context of game speedruns, I feel like it's actually impactful since playing video games wouldn't seem all that dramatic when not talking about huge competitions/tournaments.
I’d highly recommend watching the whole video, but in case you want to go one section at a time, here are the time stamps, by game: 1:33 - Super Mario Kart 7:43 - Mario Kart 64 14:12 - Super Circuit 18:27 - Double Dash 23:02 - Mario Kart DS 29:07 - Mario Kart Wii 34:32 - Mario Kart 7 40:12 - Mario Kart 8

The freakiest part about all this is that the narration was so good, the images were so good, and the soundtrack was so good that when I got to the end, and he started talking about effort and perseverance, my eyes watered up. I never thought I'd get emotional over Rainbow Road...
An awesome video. And I liked the Jon Bois reference as well. And it made me think of some of the similarities between your styles. As well as the differences both of which add up to make the styles as good as they are.
@@Freezezonian I gotta agree. I'm not particularly huge into the speedrunning scene, let alone the Mario kart speedrunning scene. But the fact that I know summoningsalt made it means it's gonna be enjoyable
I discovered your channel just a couple of months ago but I've found so much comfort and inspiration in these videos. Hearing those recurring music tracks, connecting the dots between returning speedrunners across multiple videos, it's obvious you've made something all your own on a topic you possess great knowledge of. Keep doing what you're doing.
I'm just proud that I as a child, 20 years ago, discovered the shortcut on rainbow road on my own. I was playing with the jump button and thought it was funny how you could hover the entire downhill section right after the start. And then I just tried to jump over it, to the left. I didn't make it the first time, but I came close to a piece of road and then I kept trying until I made it and beat all my friends on that track :D
I'm going through a rough time in my life right now, but your videos always bring a smile to my face without fail. Thank you, and please keep these up.
I'm not a sports guy and only sort of a video game guy. Definitely a stats guy though. I think Jon knows his audience isn't sportsy. In Scorigami doesn't he have a section where he literally explains the game of football? That's pretty funny.
Hearing your small speech at the end of the video is the most satisfying thing. This video was a special ending to the Mario Kart Marathon on your channel. Good work to you and all the runners who helped in making this video happen
Ah yes… the most iconic video to me that introduced me to summoning salt. Probably one of my favourite summoning salt videos, so glad it popped up in my recommended again.
Summoning Salt, I don’t know if you saw my Twitter post where I tagged you. But I managed to topple Gogoku7 back in February and take the Mk7 Rainbow Road World Record from him! You weren’t wrong when you said Gogoku would be beaten someday. I’m actually grinding the track again to take the track to a 1:35.7 which is the theoretical human limit despite the Sum of Best now being a 1:35.604
Thanks for subscribing! My uploads are a bit slow currently as I'm taking 3 classes for college this Summer. But I should hopefully be able to get an upload out within the next couple days :)
I've started watching your videos to wind down to sleep, because they're surprisingly calming - the only problem now is that I struggle to stop the video and move to actual sleep because they're too interesting :'))
Time Skips: 0:00 - Intro 1:32 - Super Mario Kart 7:39 - Mario Kart 64 14:08 - Mario Kart Super Circuit 18:24 - Mario Kart Double Dash 23:00 - Mario Kart DS 29:04 - Mario Kart Wii 34:27 - Mario Kart 7 40:08 - Mario Kart 8 46:20 - Conclusion
The editing on these videos is incredible. Really gives a lot of gravity to something that's ultimately not all that important (in the grand scheme of things). Great job, as always.
Yooooo!! 16:38 This strategy was something I kinda experimented with as a young lad. I just remember thinking “Hey you can bounce pretty far and it’ll let you keep driving if you land it”, but I remember also thinking to myself that it was too difficult to pull off consistently and so I never practiced or thought more of it. Little did I know, dang
"There may not be many athletes left named Bob, but..." I see that Summoning Salt not only makes hour long videos on niche subjects but also watches them lmfao
Every once in a while a guy comes along who is just THE GUY at doing a certain thing and it's like magic. Summoning Salt and Speed Run history videos is one of those combinations that's just more than the sum of its ingredients. I like your style man, keep it up.
Don’t suppose I can say it enough, finally had time to watch the episode in full, and bravo! Beautifully crafted, very informative and accurate. Your painstaking work not only on the quality, but also in reaching out to the MK communities and gathering the facts is admirable; amazing content. I’m gonna see if I can shake the dust off my GBA and rust off my fingers to try and sub 34”50 on MKSC RR. If I’m able to get it, I’ll dedicate the run to you haha. Excellent content, as always.
Summoning Salt would have a very hard time making a 40 minute video about the I Am Bread speedrun history, as theres only 5 runners on the any% category on speedrun.com
I could talk about bread for 40 minuets, would this include discussion on things like the diffrences between a sandwich and a toco and the point where bread is toast?
I love listening and watching them break down speedruns and talk about the meta details of the game. The presentation and narration is perfect and I love it.
Would like to point out something as a community member from MKDS, MKW and MKSC. The "Mander" and "Bjork" players mentioned in this video are theorized to be the same person. Mander has a history of causing chaos in the community and it was a matter of time until what he's done got onto TH-cam. Mander claimed to have played MKSC for over 18000 hours, and was exceptionally good at the game, but he had a lot of technical wisdom and was the first to add a speedometer into MKW, and his runs in MKW and some MKSC runs were proved as TAS. A whole nother video could be made about this guy because the background of it is so weird. One of Mander's times in MKSC was on one of the Donut Plains tracks, and even after using TAS for hours on end to try to match it, Hahaae (the guy also mentioned in the video) couldn't even match it with TAS. His times are pretty much rejected as a whole, and there was also a wifi player on MKDS back in the day in 2006-2007 named NTT West that beat some of the top players and was also theorized to be him.
I actually talked with him on twitter about this a couple months ago while I was doing research. He maintains that his MKSC stuff is legitimate, and says he isn't interested in the skepticism that some have. Really strange story behind it all.
山田太郎 There was also a time in which Bjork was theorized to be Casey-B, a mkw player who also tased. Casey also impostered horseface, a Japanese mkw Player who no one can contact. If I remember correctly, Casey was suspected to be bjork too. But this never was confirmed and I personally don’t think it’s true. I don’t know much about this but I’m interested. If anyone in the community knows about this please comment.

The freakiest part about all this is that the narration was so good, the images were so good, and the soundtrack was so good that when I got to the end, and he started talking about effort and perseverance, my eyes watered up. I never thought I'd get emotional over Rainbow Road...

It is gaming time. Bonus for Jon Bois reference
I loved that Jon Bous reference.
Just when I thought I couldn’t love Summoning Salt any more, I hear him drop a Jon Bois reference at 32:22. Awesome video as always.
I mean I think Jon Bois obviously influenced his videos and I thought so way before this was posted. That reference just confirmed it for me

The music you use has become so damn iconic of speed running
I'm just proud that I as a child, 20 years ago, discovered the shortcut on rainbow road on my own.
I was playing with the jump button and thought it was funny how you could hover the entire downhill section right after the start.
And then I just tried to jump over it, to the left. I didn't make it the first time, but I came close to a piece of road and then I kept trying until I made it and beat all my friends on that track :D

Pretty good.
I'm watching this video for the first time and picked up on that immediately. My two worlds are colliding in the most unsuspecting way
Honestly this guy and Jon have the same energy
I was surprised there was so much gamer-sports overlap. But I guess Bois being a stats guy kinda bridges the chasm.
I'm not a sports guy and only sort of a video game guy. Definitely a stats guy though. I think Jon knows his audience isn't sportsy. In Scorigami doesn't he have a section where he literally explains the game of football? That's pretty funny.

You could talk about bread for 40 minutes and probably make the whole thing interesting. Incredible work.
It depends if he talks about what you americans call "bread" (basically just a sponge) or what we europeans especially germans call bread.
Bread is actually very interesting I watched like an hour documentary on it like a year ago so why not
