  • After taking two wrecked Chevy Volts and making one good car. I replaced all the airbags and seat belts. Now it is time to replace the Airbag Module. I purchased a brand new unit from GM and here is the programming process.

    I start my vehicle without programming ecu, i used GDS2 for clear high voltage DTCs from Hybrid powertrain control module1/2 and that's it,ready to go. On place airbag i put 2ohm resistors, no DTC or error massage on dashboard ;)

    Flash,
    An excellent presentation of a common issue ( when cars have modules replaced, or "Frankecar" builds that require MFR downloads and calibrations.
    You have the cadence, personality, and clarity to be a trainer. Autel should have you on-staff as content builder ( or have they already ? )
    A note to the public.... BUYING the tool does not replace education. Beware of cheap knockoffs all over the net, AIMED at those that want a cheap, fast, easy fix. Even a lot of mechanics that do not continually learn new diagnostics techniques have been buying tools, standing back, and expecting the car to fix itself.... is akin tp car owner going to Autozone, and having them stick a dongle in, and getting a response of which part to replace.... does not work that way.... The errors are merely the beginning of a logical, step by step testing of the variables that can CAUSE a certain failure or TSB. YES, this tool can do a lot of those tests, but many will require knowledge of a POWERPROBE, or other tools. Diagnostics is the pathway, and education for diagnostics is essential, before buying the latest and greatest tools. The subscriptions to manufacturer's websites are partially RESTRICTED. Locksmith data is on a SECURED side of each site, with separate logins. One must apply and be approved ( rigorous background checks and audits ) This helps assure against theft of vehicles using aftermarket tools for many cars. How secure a particular YMM is, is determined by the immo system, how hard it is to reverse engineer, and other factors. Most shops buy remotes and cutting of keys from locksmiths, as this saves waiting for mail-order ones that are correct and usable about 85% of the time ( 15% have bad circuit board, wrong circuit boards or wrong chip type, worn out buttons becausethey are made from used remotes with new plastic ) That is up to my clients, as I WILL cut their ebayzanon sourced keys... but I will not guarantee them. Many locksmiths WILL NOT cut or program other-sourced keys at all.... so ask your locksmith first.
    All of the above paragraph is to give an idea that auto service shops that work on "any year make model, any problem"..... likely will not do as thorough, complete and long lasting repair, as a shop that has a lot of experience with that particular make. This is why you see a lot of shops that ONLY do Volvo and Saab, or ONLY Ford/Lincoln/Mercury, ONLY Toyota and Subaru. Part of this is the amount of specialization, the annual subscription costs, the manufacturer site to USE the J-Passthrough box.
    Choose a mechanic who is passionate. A huge shop, particularly dealerships and franchise tire companies, are there to rack up sales of sometimes unrelated, profitable service... stuff that is their wheelhouse, can be done same day and OFTEN not needed.
    I will not do diagnostics beyond the ECU/PCM/Immo Box, as related to a lost key situation. I am a locksmith, not a mechanic. I am working my way toward being a diagnostician, as I HAVE to learn more and more of this every day, to do my job. I am able to correct most situations, but will refer the vehicle when I and my backup knowledge base can not resolve.
    I did not intend to hijack the comments, jsut passing along some needed info to the public who may be searching about the volt or similar systems

    Very nice video Only thing I wish you would have added to it is the reason you did not use the other module out of the other vehicle. And Letting your viewers know that global a modules are not reusable

    Can this programmer do any ECU or module coding in generally without OE software? Not so much programming/updating just changing vin and such to make it work in the car.

    Budget wise ,I plan to get by using an old former windows 7 I-3- laptop with 4gb ram with a new 500GB SSD with a fresh install of Windows 10 pro to do programming off of.
    I suspect with a new SSD , it would work as good as an I-5 with a conventional hard drive, but will GM's program prevent the programming process if it does not see that the PC has an I-5 or better processor?

      I have seen many computers that were not at GM spec do programming, however if you need to call GM support and it does not meet or exceed their requirements they will not help.

      @@FlashPerformance, but as far as you know , since the recent changes to Windows 10 pro, their TDS program isn't in intrusive in itself going to check and warn you that your PC does not meet GM required specs and not let you proceed further

    What is a good lap top to use for reflashing. Also what is meant by segmenting lap top to use other oem manufactures software?
    There seems to be alot of “stuff” left out. As far as I can tell my Autel Maxisys. Did not come with instructions and I have been learning by use only. Time consuming and frustrating

    I have a 2018 Chevy Tahoe, DTC for right front door impact sensor, checked all wiring, swapped senor to driver's door and driver's door to passenger(same part numbers) problem moved to driver's door, ordered sensor from GM, installed and got a invalid serial data config DTC (B0085)now, original fault gone. Read that you have to set ID in the air bag module, downloaded TIS from GM J2534 passthrough to vehicle tried to program sensors but no listing only has program/reprogram SDM/Air bag module, so did that, getting error E4491, E4423(error 5 at step 0). Any ideas???

    I do have a question. i know that by having the hood open the engine generator should turn on. However, there is my situation.
    2011 Volt, not rebuilt, i had a code come up that had low cells. car will not charge anymore. Dealer says i need to replace my hybrid system. fine,, not going to since i want to use the engine instead. However, it will not start - it used to run when i had to hood open... This all happened all of a sudden. Dealer tells me there might be a code that keep it from turning the engine on until i replace the hybrid system. This is untrue, i have a friend in the same situation and their car turns on all the time... Do you know if there is a code that is keeping it from running the engine? the car actually stranded me on the freeway, it just lost power and never again turn on... any ideas? thanks... (i did not have any lights or codes on the dash when this happened on the freeway... after that it has a low cell codes....)

      Depending on the code I can think of multiple reasons the vehicle would not run. What are the codes the vehicle is showing?

      It is not recommended to use a used module for Airbag. Some vehicle manufacturers offer the ability to reset them Most do not.

      J2534 is a USA standard, but more of the world is starting to adopt it as well. You will have to check out your local laws and abilities, I am not sure.

      The module can not be reset with a scan tool, it has to be reset at the chip level, and their are companies that can do that. I decided to go with a new one instead.

      @@priusgame1178 There are 3 parts to this job, Removal and replacement of the Airbag module, cost of the airbag module plus mark up, and programming. I would quote 2 hrs for module removal and replacement, most shops will take the product cost and double it to the nearest $9.95, and programming time would be a least 1 hr shop rate plus the cost of the subscription. Labor rates vary across the country.

      The J2534 device between the 908SP and the IM608 are the same. You will be able to perform programming exactly the same as I did in this video. There are many steps to set up your system for programming, if you are in the USA you will start by going to NASTF.org They have all the information to get you started. If you are outside the USA market I have no idea how to help you.

Since, I will be using the device out of States, what's the best option for me, especially when it comes to programming keys and modules. I am really impressed by the IM608, the way you demonstrated it's capability in your video it's remarkable, but will it help me execute programming tasks in field.

      I tried to reset the Airbag module on this vehicle. There was no option with the Autel or with the J2534 box.

      The box used in this video is the MaxiFlash that comes with the IM608. The Autel J2534 boxes are pretty solid. If you want a box that will do everything I would recommend the CarDaq3 from AESwave.com

      J2534 is a USA Programming protocol. We use NASTF.org as out resource for programming and connection to the OE. If you are outside of the USA market I have no idea how to help.

    thats literally GM set up...I've been working for GM for about 3 years now ... this is the "old" setup before their new and improved main stream set up.. I wonder how ford looks and honda.
