You are a true professional (artist) in every sense of the word. I sit and watch your videos and the results are fantastic. Years ago, my 24-foot sailboat was in need of a paint job. To have the boat yard crew paint the topsides with AwlGrip was above my pay grade. Instead, and for half the cost, the yard resprayed with new gel coat. The yard crew did the prep work and sprayed the gel coat with the gun. I then wet sanded (many hours) and with a heavy-duty polishing machine and polishing compound, brought the gel coat to a mirror like shine. So, I know from first-hand experience, the work involved.
Sir you are a beast in this matter. I've been watching videos for some time and yours are the best. Your videos are very instructive and are not very long like others that last for hours. I really thank you since the way you teach. Only requires patience and common sense, no sophisticated equipment or materials. My respect for you.
Thank you so much for that. I was told that it wasn’t possible to repair Awlcraft 2000. Pity you don’t live in Italy! Great video, you anticipated all the questions imaginable. Thank you again
Another excellent video! As usual I walk away with more knowledge after watching. That is an interesting tip on masking "backward" for the painting. I'd have NEVER thought of that one!!!
I was just told by a repair facility that my Flag Blue can not be repaired and it needs to be completely repainted or it will never match. Thank you for taking the time to do this video, share your extraordinary talent and save me the pain of working with someone that is clearly not up to the task.
Excellent timing on this video. I’m almost done with mine, did a couple of repairs before seeing this and not happy with the outcome. Now I see what I did wrong. I bet you were thinking of me with the comment on the tack rag 😂
Had to laugh for a moment thought ya had ya flask there.. much respect to ya mate a tradesman with pride in there work that even offer out some trade secrets. Cheers
Frankie thank you for this video :) wanting to do paint repairs on my boat with the same awlgrip color. this was super helpful and awesome to see all the steps :)
Love all the detail shown in your videos! I was wondering how to go about repairing the area under my gas vents on a black iron painted hull. I have tried buffing with little success. Much appreciated.
Question if you are still checking- I just did a roll and tip touch up of original Awlgrip (not 2000). Using a lot of your information as a guide! Thanks. On my 3rd coat and it's hiding the spot pretty well. Can I machine polish the spot once I finish wet sanding the tipped edges with 1500/2000/3000 to Get it to blend in? Can I do it by hand sanding? spot is about 6" by 12"- Then Can I machine polish the entire hull once done? AWLGRIP seems to say no, but unsure? Your advice is much appreciated! Thanks and keep up the amazing work!
@@boatpaintingrestorationwit3029 algrip blue but alcraft clear . It’s on 4 seasons and still looks very good. I was concerned about the combo but it seems to be fine .
I usually steer clear of clear coats on boats that stay in saltwater but the upside is the clear you have is an acrylic urethane. Meaning it’s repairable and can be buffed with no issues. Regular awlgrip is not repairable in the fact that there will always be a evident halo. But because you have the awlcraft clear then you’re good to go 👌👌
@@boatpaintingrestorationwit3029 that is a exactly the reason the painter cited . Easy buffing. I have have large yet covered fenders that rub against it all winter put fine scratches. I run a buffer over it in the spring with a light compound and all scratches are gone . So the plan worked well.
looks amazing, love how you blended into the original color. I have an older awlGRIP (not awlcraft) flag blue sailboat hull to tackle at some point, can you take the same approach with the prep? and can you apply Awlcraft 2000 on top of that old AwlGrip paint. I've been told you can't sand or buff the old awlgrip with any compounds, you will just get scratches? This old boat has lots of scratches, and a few worn area where i can see white primer underneath the flag blue. all advice would be greatly appreciated
Hi mate Tony from wales 👍 Been watching all your videos they are superb I’ve just bought a 33 ft fishing boat and I’m doing. Full refurb on it I’m gona have a go at painting the boat my self but was thinking of rolling and tipping it Might ask for some tips if that’s ok Frankie 👍 Cheers butty
Thanks Frankie for sharing your expertise. If you had a similar repair that was clear coated would you blend the clear the same way as the topcoat? If you didn't breach the topcoat in preparation, is priming necessary (orginal paint is Awlgrip, dark blue)?
Frankie , do you ever spray with fade out thinner after the last coat ? It works very good with acrylic paints , awlcraft , awlgrip and quantum . It helps before the process with the 3.000 and buffing. Give your lights please !

Hello my name is Mike I just want to let you know that we’ve watched pretty much all of your videos and we thank you so much for the info and for teaching us I have a question for you we recently had a boat painted with awl craft paint A month later we had the boat filled up with gas and some overflow of the gas spilled onto the paint causing the paint to shrivel and turn into a mushy condition we are trying to find out what could have caused this because who has not had An overflow of gas to their cars and boats and I don’t think that that should’ve happened do you have any knowledge on to this please we really need your help
Hey mike. There are a few different reasons as to why this might have happened. One it the paint wasn’t mixed properly. 2 is if the fitting wasn’t removed before paint and was taped off poorly and paint got on the fitting itself, when it overflowed, the fuel managed to creep behind the paint and that could have caused that to happen. Seeing it in person would be a big help.
@@boatpaintingrestorationwit3029 Something else that may be a factor is the length of time between when the boat was painted and when fuel was spilled on the paint. Doesn't this stuff need about 2 weeks to fully cure? And I'm asking, not telling. I just read that and wanted to know if what I read is correct about the cure time?
Great vids you do. I have had some of the same repairs to almost same color on my boat but Awlgrip told me never ever put wax on awlgrip so I'm wondering why you do it?
Wax is definitely not recommended but copolymer is. The true wax I used at the end has copolymer shield Technology and is designed for paint. After using the various compounds and machine polish, then it’s good to seal it off with a copolymer product of sorts👌
Brother if you can one video explains well about 1 the mixing process a lot people me the first one don’t get the mixing process and the products I go to web site is so many different numbers for one color I really don’t know what to do !!!!
Hello, Thank you for your video really complete, love it. Got a question: Which sand paper would you use for the final sanding before buffing? I got 3m trizact 3000. Which one do you recommend?
Well done on this video. Really good 👍. If I buy a hull with old awlgrip, is there a diy brush and tip paint that can go over the awlgrip or do I have to spray on?
You can roll and tip awlgrip if you choose to. There are multiple different type paints out there that you can roll and tip. Awlcraft however is not one of them.
Frankie, do you ever use high build and if so can give is some tips on that? I’m painting a Seacraft CC and can see some print thru in the gel coat from the woven I guess. Will 545 hide that or should I high build it? I have watched most of your videos and have learned a ton. You are very talented and a great teacher. Thank you very much!
Greg Mason hey bud. I do use high build sometimes but usually when that’s needed I use Barrust 235 instead. If you sand good and apply 3-4 coats of 545 that will usually make the print thru disappear. It will really depend on what your finish color will be. The darker the color the more likely the print will be visible. If going light then the print will definitely disappear.
Frankie, I appreciate the great content and videos you are putting out. I use the 3M accuspray gun too for shooting gel coat with the red tips. I am about to start shooting primer and paint, which tips are you using to shoot 545 and Awlcraft?
Wow! Thanks for the education, Frankie. I have the exact same damage and am about to repair. I have a question: When repairing my Awlgrip painted boat should I use the softer Awlcraft 2000 for the repair so it can be buffed as shown in your video? THANKS!
I was wet sanding this weekend with an electric orbital, and it started raining. I stopped when i started feeling the electricity in my hand after about 2 hours 😅😅
Planing on painting my deck soon, it has a lot of spider cracks and other cracks in gelcoat. what is going to be the best way to prep these cracks before staring the painting process?
Hey Bruce. If it’s a bunch of close range cracks is various areas then I’d recommend removing all product back to bare glass and put some new glass on those areas. Only way to prevent them from coming back. If they are scattered and by themselves then you can just grind them out with a die grinder or dremel tool. Bevel the edges and grind through the crack into the glass and backfill with epoxy ( thickend epoxy, or awlfair, or a product similar) you will be good to go after that. Just now seeing this message 👌👌
Randy Greenberg this boat was painted a few years ago with awlcraft 2000 flag blue. It was a gelcoat finish before it was painted. The process I showed with priming and painting for these repairs is how you would tackle the whole boat for a full paint job. I knew what color it was so I was able to quickly knock out the repair. Hope that helps.
Yes and it works just fine. However or, Barrust is hard as all get out and tough to sand. Doing a quick scratch and over coating with 545 is quicker with better finish results. 545 sand like butter. Lol
You can but a halo will always be evident. Guess it depends on how picky you need to be. You could probably make it look perfect but it will only last a short period of time. Especially if it’s a darker color.
No. Only if it’s really hot outside will I flush gun after each coat but usually not needed. I add more paint as needed but when I mix up a batch it lasts for the entire process. I fill the cup as needed 👌
Thank you David. No to the clear coat. I only use clear if I’m spraying metallics. I’m not a fan of clear coat and boats that stay in saltwater. That’s just me. 👌
