    Hey Frankie, thank you for these incredible videos. You are a great instructor. I have a question for ya-do you need to break down and clean your gun between each coat primer, and each coat of paint?

    Nice job,, l know how hard awgrip is to paint, l just sprayed a 47 foot yaht turned out perfect outside in 12 mph winds and came back the next day too dull!!! Wasn't even tacky when I left but the early morning dew took away my beautiful shine in places and I had to sand it all over again and respray,,

    Frankie you don't have to answer if you think it's too personal. I find I am not good enough to try a full job like that on my own boat. What would the estimate for a boat like that be? I love the videos.

    Hey Frankie, Love your channel and am about to paint my 29' Ericson sailboat. Your advice is invaluable.
    How do you feel about clear coat over topside paint? Is it worth it?

    • @boatpaintingrestorationwit3029
      @boatpaintingrestorationwit3029  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would not recommend clear coat. I’ve never been a fan of it and I would only use clear if spraying metallic. I personally do not believe clear should be on a boat that spends its life in saltwater. This is just my opinion. The advantages to clear is it hides imperfections. But once it starts to break down then you have another mess to deal with. With that being said, there are others out there that would recommend it. Everyone has their own opinion on the matter.

    Frankie. I’ve enjoyed your videos. I’m looking at a Selene 50 ocean trawler that has been neglected. The hull was repainted about 4 years ago but looks like it wasn’t properly prepped prior to repainting. Subsequently, hit was hit by a barge and then “touched up”. There are many areas of spider cracks around portholes and other fixtures. Also there is a two foot area of stress fractures probably secondary to the collision. I really like the boat but it also has problems with mechanicals. The owner knows boat such as this are rare finds in the current market but I don’t want to overpay for a boat I want. Knowing the damage, what should a yard that does restoration charge me to repair the hull? I know it is difficult to give an exact price but could you at least give a range of what to expect to cost.?

    Hey Frankie, awesome videos. I finished my third coat yesterday doing everything i saw in the video, but today i have streaks of haze all along the hull. Should i sand down and add another coat, or is there a way to sand at a very high grit and polish? Thanks

    • @boatpaintingrestorationwit3029
      @boatpaintingrestorationwit3029  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Usually when it hazes it’s because of moisture. Night air setting on the surface etc. sometimes it happens on bigger boats in certain areas where there is a fridge, or ac unit etc. just all depends. If you used awlcraft then yes you can polish it out but you might be better off spraying another coat.

      @boatpaintingrestorationwit3029  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mondragonpride11 I do airfile and torcher board when needed. Most of the time these boats have a lumpy/dimply contour from the factory. I prefer to try and make the repair match the surrounding. It’s rare that I come across a hull that is perfect. But when I do, I blocksand. Lol

    Why you retape and mask off at every stage ,why the masking can't stay through out the whole process?

    • @boatpaintingrestorationwit3029
      @boatpaintingrestorationwit3029  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There are a few different reasons. 1 ( the amount of dust that gets trapped in and on the plastic that will get in your topcoat when spraying) 2 ( after the primer cures on the plastic, when you spray the topcoat, the air that hits the plastic and makes the plastic move has the ability to release cured primer flakes off the plastic and it can land in your fresh paint) it sucks when that happens and is not worth chancing. It’s also good to remove plastic after each step to ensure that no overspray found its way onto surrounding surface. If there’s a way for the overspray to find its way through the plastic, it will. Ultimately it’s just not worth chancing. However, if it was my own personal boat, well I’d probably chance it 😂👌👌

    Frankie-, You may want to stagger the trigger points (start and stop) 3 coats turns into 6 coats in these areas.

  • @donnfl
    @donnfl 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    You never mention how long your waiting between coats. Great video though. thanks

    • @boatpaintingrestorationwit3029
      @boatpaintingrestorationwit3029  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      donnfl it’s something I never think about. The time between coats all depends. With the bigger boats usually by the time you’re finished with the first coat you can immediately start on the second. With the smaller boats that’s not the case. The thumb test is how I go about knowing when to proceed. You push your thumb down on the tape where you have painted and count to 2. Remove your thumb and if no paint is stuck to your thumb then your ready for the next coat 👌👌. Good old thumb test. Hope this helps

    So why does AWL say don’t do a tac coat? They say it will not make the final coats smooth. You are the man doing the actual work professionally so I trust your experience it’s just kinda confusing

    • @boatpaintingrestorationwit3029
      @boatpaintingrestorationwit3029  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think they say that because of the new formulas that constantly come out. I just prefer to stick with what I know. When I do my first coat, I call it a light tack coat but all in all it’s still a wet coat. The goal it to not go for color coverage until the 2nd coat. Even then you will still see light spots. The 3rd coat is when it all comes together. Not sure if this answers your question but I don’t know how else to explain it.

      Thanks Frankie I put down 4 coats and it came out well in my opinion especially for a rookie. My question now is I wasn’t going to clear coat it (it’s flag blue ) but should I wet /dry sand it with 1500 then cut and wax it? I was planning on it. Thoughts?
