    Question, what model sander and what brand sandpaper are you using here?

  • @johnlemieux7464
    @johnlemieux7464 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm in the middle of prepping my Hudson Force 50. I used the 3M Acrylifiller and really dislike it. I know you said it would shrink and it did, but I am finding that it also swells with 545 over the top so when I sanded the 545 it opens up the filler and now I am concerned the Awlgrip will swell it again. What is your experience with this? Long boarding a 50 foot hull is something I really don't ever want to do again.
    Thanks for your videos.

    That came up a treat, lov watching you work.
    Couple of quick questions, how do you know when to change your sanding disks, and secondly do you ever clear coat of the paint.

    • @boatpaintingrestorationwit3029
      @boatpaintingrestorationwit3029  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Changing the discs is something you notice while sanding. When you start with a new disc it sand great and makes progress. When you start noticing it taking longer to get the finish sanding done, change the paper. Clear coat. No. Unless it’s metallic. Clear coat doesn’t belong on a boat that spends its life on/in saltwater. At least that’s my opinion

    • @cspray5386
      @cspray5386 ปีที่แล้ว

      Clear coat is definitely the way to go.
      But a bit more expensive.
      The colours in the solid fade over time.
      The SE range from awlgrip is designed for this.

    Frankie - Love your work. Appreciate the videos and the information sharing. 1. Just wondering how much primer you mix up at a time? How much paint at 1 time? Do you mix during the short cure times between coats? 2. Just wondering as we never see that part in your videos, (when you mix and how much at a time for 545 and 2000) Thanks!! 3. Also, I assume you would go with a gray Primer with a Stars and Stripes Blue Color? (I know you like gray regardless) Have you painted stars and stripes blue before?

    Great videos and instruction, thank you! How do you sand the corners?

    • @boatpaintingrestorationwit3029
      @boatpaintingrestorationwit3029  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really sure I understand the question. Lol. Around the transom corners and bow corner, I roll the sander around it the best I can. Then when I do my final rinse with a scotchbrite, that’s when I really concentrate on corners. It always works great and comes out like it’s supposed to. Paint definitely sticks and you don’t have to worry about it flaking off. Hope this answers what you were asking 👌

    Awesome video! Quick question. I want to awlgrip the inside of my boat, but the surface is rough from the factory (gelcoated over un-sanded glass) how would i go about getting a good bond? sanding only touches the high spots even with a sanding sponge. Would seahawk s90 etch the gelcoat enough for 545 primer?

      Just the hull? 4 grand is fair if taking it somewhere to have it painted. There’s a lot of factors the play into effect also. Just depends on what the condition is and how many colors you want. A 23 ft boat could easily cost 10 grand plus if you were wanting a tricked out paint job with Graphics

    1) thats what i always wondered in regards to the tack rag. Its a waxy sticky feel and i could never wrap why u would get a CLEAN surface and then put a waxy substance to it.
    2) since u are doing black.....why are the doors open? I assume there is gonna be trash everywhere in the paint. Im NOT questioning your ability. Just thought that with the doors wide open, theres no way that there arent gonna be boogers in the paint.

    Curious why unmask after primer

    • @boatpaintingrestorationwit3029
      @boatpaintingrestorationwit3029  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because one, if any overspray creeps through the plastic anywhere it gives you time to get it cleaned up. Two, primer or topcoat on plastic will flake off the plastic with the slightest air movement. Sucks when/if it blows off and into your finish product. It does happen. Best to not chance it

    • @wr8010
      @wr8010 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok someone said cause when pull tape have big line which didn’t make sense to me you spray cars and don’t unmask after every coat which is what I was told to do after every coat which seemed highly ridiculous but I see the difference in plastic moving versus paper tightly taped to windows not moving thanks for reply
