    I love how your paints sort of bead up, leaving little white/blank spots on your papers, a bit like a 'resist' effect. Did you recently clean the plate with something that left a residue? I really would like to get that effect. :)

    • @VikkiReed
      @VikkiReed  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That seems to happen at the beginning of each session, and yes, I do clean the plate from time to time, with baby wipes and then "condition" with mineral oil, but then making sure nothing is left on the plate.

    I really enjoyed this video. I just bought some rice paper from Dick Blick and suddenly both of my gelli plates are sticking like crazy. Any ideas? I've tried too much paint, not enough paint. I've probably made over 500 pages from my plates, so I'm a bit stumped. Copy paper, baby oil, Dawn dish soup. It's crazy!

    • @VikkiReed
      @VikkiReed  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh my gosh, Carol, that sounds super frustrating! I don’t know anything about the rice paper from Dick Blick, but I can’t imagine why your plate is sticking so much…and you’ve even treated it with mineral oil! I can tell you that humidity and temperature levels do affect your prints, if it is under 20% or over 55% humidity, it’s very hard to get a good print. Also, I use fluid acrylics almost exclusively as opposed to heavy body, which I use only for photo transfers and projects similar. I would be very discouraged if I had gone 500 prints without success! I’m hoping for better results for you soon! BTW, I use JapanBargain Calligraphy Rice Paper from Amazon as my rice paper…

    I'm trying to see what kind of white you are using - when I use GOLDEN Titanium White it sticks to the Gel plate. You didn't seem to have the issue. :)

    • @VikkiReed
      @VikkiReed  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Heather, it is Golden Titanium White, but it is Fluid Acrylic, not Heavy Body. The Heavy Body Acrylics behave COMPLETELY differently on the gelli plate, and I don't use them very often...I know they are part of successful photo transfers, but I don't have that down yet!

    Can you do this on thicker papers? Eg watercolour paper… loving the effect but would love to add to it after it’s printed.

    • @VikkiReed
      @VikkiReed  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, thanks for your question, you can print on thicker paper, and I have even seen some artists print on canvas and fabric, although I have not been successful with that. If the paper has tooth or texture, the print is harder to capture. I print on the rice paper, then use it as collage in mixed media pieces, so potentially, using it in that way, you could add to it.

    Yupo also works well for making stencils/masks. I notice you often add a white to your colour mixes, is there a reason why?

      @VikkiReed  ปีที่แล้ว

      Shannon, thank you for your Yupo tip and question! I am just beginning to experiment with the Yupo as a stencil...and I use white when I want a different color than what comes directly without mixing, and I am hoping to achieve that

    What is the advantage over doing layers directly to paper?

    • @VikkiReed
      @VikkiReed  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      As in the paper that is your art piece? It is the same process. I use most of these papers as collage in mixed media art on canvas or panel, or you could apply this directly on panel. If you are making gelli print on Bristol for example, you would simply use this process on the Bristol. I have not found anything quite like the rice paper for lifting prints though...thank you for your question!

      Helgi, of course! I would start with Carbon Black, Titanium White, Golden Nickel Azo Gold, Phthalo Blue Green Shade, Green Gold, Quinacridone Magenta OR Permanent Violet Dark, and if you still have budget, Primary Yellow, then Teal. Basically with black and white, then a blue, red and yellow, you can mix any color. I avoid the cadmiums almost entirely because they tend to make things muddy. Thanks for your question and happy printing!

      Caelidh, yes, I can send you to my website to see artwork I create using the (usually torn) gelli prints as collage, vikkreed.com and there is a video showing a beautiful collage piece at the end I made with the prints, ...th-cam.com/video/ayEbsROhXeg/w-d-xo.html (Gelli Printing on Rice Paper) The thing about some other fluid acrylics is that they have less pigment and more "binder" and things just slip around on the plate, without giving a good result...may art supply abundance arrive for you soon!

      Eija, great question! I am in the Southwest Desert where it tends to be very warm and dry, so what you see is in real time, and the prints are dry almost instantly so I can continue on to the next layer. If you live where there is a lot of humidity, or it is very cool, that needs to be factored in, so yes, it needs to be dry!

    Can you use cardstock paper for these techniques or should it be paper with less texture?

    • @VikkiReed
      @VikkiReed  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tracy, I've just been printing with some heavier stock and although 24 lb and 32 lb (copy paper) still give great results, the card stock seems to make it more challenging to lift the print. It can be done, but I notice more paint gets left on the plate. The rice paper is amazing for lifting the prints, and for collage, but if you want to make greeting cards, you do need a slightly heavier stock. Thanks for watching!

      Yes! I haven't figured out how to gelli print on fabric (although others have). The smoother the surface, the cleaner the gelli print, so any "tooth" in the fabric disrupts the print a bit

      @VikkiReed I was thinking along the lines of marketing your prints to companies and they turn them into fabric. (Surface design). I think they're very marketable.

      Vox, I use them as collage in paintings, for greeting cards, or as the foundation for art pieces, I know others use them as journal pages. I have a video on "How to Reuse a Painted Canvas" which does show applying collage pieces to the painting to make bird shapes, thanks for your question and thanks for watching!
