Older artist here, losing my eyesight. Decided recently to try working with a gelli plate, not knowing much about it, and stumbled on your channel. you're opening new possibilities for me and I can't tell you how grateful I am.
Hi there - very glad the videos are helping out. I reckon working on the bigger plates may be accessible if you're struggling with your eyesight. I did a video on big oil pastel drawing transfer that might be useful to you. Remember, Turner did his absolute best work when his eyesight got too strained for detail - not just HIS best work, but some of the best and most groundbreaking work ever made : ) xxx
I am revisiting gel printing from my high school days. Back then we made our own plates. I'm so excited to find your tutorials! I want to do my own art. So many of the other channels gear more towards card making or just photo transfers. This is really inspiring! Thank you!
Thanks so much for your generous sharing and your examples of experiments. You are a skilled & creative artist, and it’s amazing what you find to do with a gelli plate!!
If drawing is a challenge, maybe tracing over an existing drawing would work (for example, tracing over a photocopy placed on top of some thicker paper)
Your experiments take the gel plate to exciting levels. I like the originality you put into your art without using all the store-bought stencils and such. That is real art to me. To be a free thinker and use what is around you and see what works. My question: What is the best way to clean the plate with the mediums you use, like, crayon, pastels, charcoal, ect...I have an old plate. I used charcoal on it but the ghost is still on it. Thanks for sharing your techniques, intriguing to watch.
Extremely well produced video that answers a lot of questions by being about the art, not the artist. So many videos ramble: not this one though. Thank you.
Oh this is so exciting to me! I've just recently gotten a gel plate and it started playing around with it and I am going to have fun! I'm going to have so much fun with this! Thank you so much for showing this technique. 🥰
I love all the great things you do with everyday supplies. And then you go on to mash the techniques together to make even more amazing art. Fabulous videos! I bought a pack of foam printing plates that look like cardstock but hold a line even better. They don't wear out like the cardstock. I've made small texture plates with them but you are inspiring me to go big!
Hi Robin, that's a lovely comment, thanks. It's been really important to me to use accessible and, where possible, cheap materials. The basics - gel plate / brayer / paint cost enough as is, so I've been avoiding all the fancy pants pre cut stencils and what not.
Loved this! It didn’t matter that the clarity of line wasn’t perfect or completely transferred. I thought it really added character to the piece. I’m new to all this and am looking forward to experimenting with this technique - as soon as my gelli plate arrives 😍😍
Thanks for joining the faculty of “digitdot university” in 2021. So easy to learn technical stuff from every video, but most important is watching & hearing the passion for making art in your voice. No faking that. Bravo!
Bowled over by such lovely comments. Of course, I love making stuff, so I'm delighted that comes across. All I want is for people to feel motivated to have a go and adapt things to their own needs : )
Thank you, these are excellent tutorials and you are so generous with what you share. I hope you get lots of donations as you are providing a good quality service. I am hooked.
So glad you started this channel… again, using the pen like this is a great way to test drawings and work through ideas before scratching and inking up drypoint plates. Great to see all your ideas and experiments… can’t wait to see what happens next… kindest regards Sharon.
Hi Sharon, lovely to read your comments as always. As you've noted, this could be a great way to check potential of a drypoint idea, especially as you can photocopy and make little amendments so quickly. You can't get that lovely fine quality of line you get from a dry point but it's pretty good and a lot less mess!!!! Sure I've said it in other videos, but I'm getting a lot creatively from the channel too : )
The very first pull and I’m already so excited! Thank you for making this video! I’m new to gelli printing, and your channel has so many amazing cool ideas. I was just layering a couple magazine pages and then at a loss for what else I could do. Thank you!!
I love what you've done here. I am new to gelli printing and want to use it to add to abstract paintings. I love the hand drawn, monoprint quality you have achieved. As someone else commented, so many others are using pre-made stencils. Your technique is individual and exciting with so many possibilities. Thank you for sharing, I look forward to trying it out... once I've made my plate 😊
I enjoyed watching your process of using the ball point pen as an embossment. I never would have thought of doing that. I have only made transfer prints on a plexiglass plate. Thank you! I am a printmaker in the East coat of the United States. 😊
Thank you for sharing another fun technique. Have only seen this with styrofoam (take out containers) and have tried it with fun foam (cheap kids stuff). The fun foam with the adhesive backing might lend itself to combining the pen technique with your collograph techniques. . You are so much fun to watch - it does not hurt at all that you are clearly a talented artist. Thanks for sharing - always perk up when I see you have posted.
Such a lovely comment Jan. i've only tried printing directly from foam - pizza bases etc - using weaterbased inks. Not done anything with them on gel plate yet. I'll have a go!
Love your techniques and I love Wayne Thiebaud. I met him in Milwaukee years ago and even got his autograph. Super glad I found your channel. Very inspiring!
hi beverly, mentioning Wayne Thiebaud's work resonated with a few people, and I hope a few more discovered his work because of the video. I think he took the mantle from that long line of American realist painters many of us love; Sargent, Whistler, Bellows, Wyeth, Hopper...
Thank you so much Mark, I really really enjoyed watching you creating these Gelli Plate prints, with ballpoint pens. Did transfer really well. Please stay safe and well too xxx Mags
Printmaking just became a lot easier watching your videos! I bought a gel plate recently to start experimenting so looking forward to trying some of your technique suggestions.
Its so versatile : ) Technique works brilliantly along with wax crayon areas to create mid tones and textures - see vid linked below th-cam.com/video/_imymWTVJv0/w-d-xo.html
Love watching your videos, so clever and inspiring. I checked out Wayne Thibaud, he passed on Xmas day just over 3 weeks after this video. What an umpresssive output of work, and such a long life.
Beautiful technique! Thank you soooo. Inch for sharing your experimental gelli printing techniques! You are an amazing artist too and soooo generous to share! !
Thank you for sharing this! I just purchased a Gelli Plate and am researching all the different ways it can be used. Being an Artist myself, the ability to create these fun prints from ballpoint drawings is so intriguing!
Yay Mark!!! Maha told me you had a channel and I’m so happy she did! This is a really exciting process that I am going to have to try. I love print making but most of what I learned in school requires a press and a lot of special equipment, so this is great how accessible it is. Love seeing your face and learning from you (you’re such a great teacher). Cheers to you and the fam
hey Kirsta!!!! hope you're well. you're definitely gonna have to try a gel plate. a little ingenuity and you can do all sorts with them!!! Stay in touch, i'm guessing you're still painting???
Interesting ideas for sure 🤩! We take our drawings digitize them print them using a laser printer and get some pretty nifty and similar results. Also allows us to keep the original and utilize the copies for all sorts of adventures 😉
Hi there, sounds good. I've tried the same with scans and laser prints of drawings but found it hit and miss. This method I've found i get a cleaner line...
@@yeatesmakes It did take a bit of time to perfect the process but we have been really successful with it. You should check out some of our shorts or last stream 😉🥰
It's all Wayne Thiebaud!!! I rippped his drawing technique completely for this. He's up there with Kathe Kollwitz, Bradford, Durer, Kiefer, Doig amongst loads of others as one of my fave artists!!!
Cheers Pasquale, blown away that people in so many places are tuning in and trying some techniques I'm sharing : ) ps. my neighbour is from the Ardeche, he's like family, I love him!!!!

I did go and watch...
The state of your gel plate adds texture to your creations. I’m so jealous I can’t draw like yourself 😂
!! The state of my plate was just laziness initially !!
That's great. If you're making a picture to sell you can sign it with the plate!
I love that we learn WITH you when you are experimenting! Thank you!
Glad to hear - I do not want to give the impression it is all plain sailing so usually film my first attempts, with all the pitfalls that brings : )
Thanks for telling me you let it dry!! No one else I have watched has ever said that ❤❤❤😊
Pretty important for avoiding rips - I learnt the hard way!!!!
Love this technique! I’m so grateful when you show us your explorations and share the whole process, including the less successful aspects. Thank you!
A pleasure T Hanna, glad you enjoyed it : )
Absolutely BRILLIANT I was captivated by the whole process. Thank you.
Thank you. This was very interesting and opens the door to some amazing possibilities.Thank you for sharing your insights.

what's the recipe to make your own gel plate? Could you share one (tested)?
Oooh, very interesting technique. The green lines on black was actually my favourite. :)
Hope it works for you : )
Thanks so much for your generous sharing and your examples of experiments. You are a skilled & creative artist, and it’s amazing what you find to do with a gelli plate!!
So much potential with this technique. Being able to draw so well must help too!😉
LOADS of potential!!! Can't wait to get stuck in to some diferent types of drawing to explore! Cheers, as ever, for comments Gina : )

Your channel popped up in our feed and am loving your printing/ collage videos. Excellent stuff, Rich.
Glad to have added a bit more float to your boat : )
I likes your desire to experiment
This is the most innovative gell plate demonstration that I've see. Great work and thank you for sharing.
never would have thought this would have worked !!!
it works so well, check out vids I did on using damp paper too, helps with not having to press so hard : )
Love how you experimented and brought us along. Great discovery 💡
That's great news Kathleen : )
Dude!!! Don't clean your plate! Crusty goodness there! Great vid, love ALL your experiments !😃
Crusty goodness!!! That made me chuckle Sue, cheers!!!
Merci beaucoup 👍🌸🌸🌸
Fun! Especially love the character of the last one.

I always love the grunge on your gel plate. It’s like visual ASMR or art mukbang lol.
LOL, I think I would fail at ASMR videos, my house is way too noisy!!!
Excellent!!! You have me excited about exploring my gel plate as a tool❤ Thank you
Hey, I'm new to gel printing, and collages. This is absolutely great, 😊
You’ll have fun !!
Amazing! Love the feel of the drawing...soft and vintage.

Very nice discovery with the gelli plate
