  • Today on the woodlathe we have the third and final large bowl blank to come from a single black walnut trees main trunk crotch section. This piece started out cut square at 17x17 inch and 6.5 inches thick. I began the turning process by first marking out a rough circle on the workpiece and roughing it round using my miter saw since the bandsaw is currently out of operation. Once the blank was roughly round with a center mark on the face the faceplate ring was added and attached with all 6 screws. The woodlathe was ran in low speed range to maximize torque on a piece this large. The final piece Im calling a more "modern" style bowl featuring a straight wall rim and a pleasantly curved sidewall. This bowl is finished with a food safe safe finish that can be found at the link below in the description. In the end this project finished out at 15 inches across and 5 inches in overall height, making for a beautiful piece on any table.

Nice looking chuck of Walnut Chase, and the finish just makes that grain pop.

Awesome grain pattern. Almost looks like a skeleton pattern of a back or a Cobra.

Beautiful piece of walnut! That crotch figure is out of this world. Well done!
Just curious, are you all carbide all the time?

Thank you Doug! That grain really was the best of the 3 bowls I got from the single crotch piece I blanked out. As far as carbide, I am currently unless it's spindle turning as I am down a grinding station and waiting for new setup 😉 stay tuned as I'm working on it appearing soon hopefully!

@DougMilleratWoodSpunRound I actually miss turning more with traditional tools at times, but .u freehand sharpening skills leave a lot to be desired 🤣
