Woodturning Projects That Sell - The Craftsman Rolling Pin
Today's project on the wood lathe is another project in the woodturning that sells series. As craft fair season is upon us many may be looking for a quick easy project that is a great impulse buy and stock item. This is also a great beginner woodturning project to practice tool control, shaping, and turning large flat areas. This project that sells starts with a 2.75-inch square by 20-inch-long piece of walnut or any wood of your choosing and finishes as a beautiful and fully functional 18-inch rolling pin. The rolling pin was sanded to 240 grit, burnished with 0000 steel wool and finished with a food safe finish that can be found at the link below in the description. Does anyone know what rpm he was using for this?
If I recall correctly I was somewhere in the range of 2250-2350. Other than turning down the nubs on the ends of handles and then I'm usually much slower in the 1000-1200rpm range

what are the dimensions on your template?
Just turned these in woodshop. 68 year old newbie one year. Great to see another approach.
can you tell us the three diameters, distance to middle diameter and overall length please.
Thanks for helping a begginner like myself seeing that this can be done. Though I admit going to practice on a few cheap pieces of wood first, I would hate to ruin the good stuff. BTW, nice display at the end.

What a horrible technique, this is no wood turning, this is scratching. I would recommend to take a wood turning course. There you will learn to use the right tools (yours are waste), how tho sharpen- and how to use them correctly. Your skills should not be copied, it will lead to frustration, surface is full of tear outs and your sanding orgy will not save it! Only the the idea with the heart is nice!

Thank you! I do not have an available template but the rolling area of the pin is 13 inches and the pin itself is 18 inches overall length. Handles are each 2.5inches

At what speed are you turning?
Thank you for watching! I'm turning these heart bowls a bit faster than you would a regular bowl as I'm treating them like a winged bowl and the increased speed helps reduce that airngap time when cutting around the wings of the bowl
Sometimes the simple jobs can be quit rewarding, and you can finish them really quickly .
