Amazing episode. What was said in the ending about the best tank in the world is quite true. You may have the best equipment, best whatever. But main point is the people operating/using it.
The Leopard 2 normally uses 2 types of ammunition : (1) APFSDS - T (Armor Piercing Fin Stabilized Discarding Sabot - Tracer) and (2) HEAT - MP - T (High Explosive Anti-Tank - Multi-Purpose - Tracer) rounds. The APFSDS-T round penetrates about 450mm thick armour at 2km range. The HEAT-MP-T round is effective against both soft and hard targets. They are using the APFSDS - T rounds.
I believe that is incorrect. The AFPSDS round's main purpose is to disable the electronics aka the functionality and mobility of the tank. It is piercing through the tank at such a high velocity to destroy the vital components. It's design to create a clean pierce so it can go deep. There is minimal spray if not negligible.
All arms of the army are equally important as the fighting force will only function effectively as 1 combine arm. I'm glad that SAF is moving into this direction to be force multiplier in view of limited resources. Using modern platforms like the Leopard tank to leverage on this.
AFPSDS sabot is a pure kinetic energy round. It does not have any explosives. What you said is true only when it hit the electronics. As the penetrator enters the tank, heated fragments of metal fly off in all directions including the armour of the tank. So the crews inside will die & the tank is rendered worthless as it's just a piece of metal without the crews. That's the main purpose of AFPSDS, to kill tank crews.
Fleece jackets, long johns and balaclava are issued before the trip. But then again, no need for those jackets when you are in the tank itself, since it'll be comfortable enough. I've got first-hand experience
If the armour is defeated, the heat and spalling (molten particle spray) generated by the penetrator going through the armour + the pressure wave would destroy the target.
I agree. But history has shown that infantry armed with a good anti-tank weapon are way more effective, in the jungles and built-up areas. In open areas, the tank will be vulnerable to air and artillery power
You can see how that in Boys to Men (IV) where the background was in either School of Armour or Armour Training Centre. The show really reminds me of my NS active & reservist days in 40 SAR & 432 SAR! :)
Best tank in world is not the hardware but the software. The crew. I believe an efficient SM1 crew will be able to outfox a weakly trained Leopard crew anytime.
Go to 4:38, click on the gear icon and change playback speed to x0.25 instead of the normal x1. You will see a hit on right on the left corner (where the petrol tank of most tanks will be). Go to 4:59, another hit (center of enemy tank), go to 5:15 a near miss (over), at 5:16 another hit (center of tank). So I counted 3 hits and 1 miss. Oh, by the way, these guys are training to be tank commanders, so they don't need to hit their targets, their gunners are the ones who need to hit the targets, and those guys practice a lot :)
I have been told by my Singaporean friends that a person of minority race is not allowed to operate a tank or any advance vehicle during their NS training. This is utterly disgusting the way the military conducts itself regarding the way it treats its minority.
Actually, you are the one who is naive and sheltered. We need an army made up of professionals. But in line with the current ruling party of needing cheap labour, we have any army consisting of poorly paid conscripts with majority having poor morale. Also, changing our military doctrine from guerilla warfare to a conventional warfare is foolish as recent history has shown, a conventional army can never overcome guerilla tactics.
Armour infantry soldiers, my salute to you all. The training is tough but you guys are tougher

You are right, Singapore is small, that's why the tactics is not to fight in Singapore, but strike at the enemy first and fight in their lands.
Excellent! On Target! This is our aim to train our future son's no wasting of ammo. Keep it up!

Leopard Tank is an Excellent choice for SAF ARMOUR Tankies to OWN.

are u supposed to hit the moving target or the houses?
in Germany, even their forests look so nice...cool greenery. Flat landscapes, perfect drive to huge german leopand tank...or benz

Yap, that's why our fellow Brothers & I serve National Service.

Great episode! Quite an eye opener for me!

leopard 2a4 is so damn awesome.. Well done mindef..
Well done cyberpioneer! Excellent episode.
Any chance of an episode on Armour Infantry?

Please answer why good tanks have spall liner to protect the crews?
hats off to url guys. being an army daughter im very sure i know e hard work url put in. *applauds*
I like the caption about this video...firing the bigger weapon ia one hell of transitioning to specialisation in the military career
Is there fan in the tank or something?
Well, in Armour, we are taught to avoid a head on with another tank. Instead, trying to flank for the "sweet spot" of your enemy's tank.

When the MP series will be released ?
Awesome episode. Makes me miss army days though my vocation isnt armor.
What about the ground infantry units. Recon, rangers, etc. etc.?
i think guerilla is more suited to defensive? an offensive insurgency is quite difficult?
"heated fragments of metal fly off in all directions"
hi i have a question why are the tv series like 20+ minutes and these like 5 to ten?
The sabot round penetrated through the target and land behind the it. Unless you fire a HEAT round, the target will blow to pieces.
Is that APCBC round or a SABOT round
Huh? Quite a number of the shots filmed went through the target. You looking closely? Don't look at the dust cloud.
Will there be any new episodes of Every Singaporean Son3 about the commandos?
What training area did you use, Sennylager or Bergen Honne?
will they be featured in future series?
what happens to the spent penetrator rod?
Obviously, you do not the know about modern MBT's urban warfare upgrade modular package.
Hi, how are they posted to logistics? What requirements?
Its called a sabot right?
they have their reasons.
what about commando's full training?
We need an army to do sai kang.
i think all the leopard tank crew has to do is to just hit the SM1 head on.
they fire sabot rounds?
D u record in the army
So that other countries wont dare to attack Singapore even it is a small country
how about artillery?
Don't tell me this is ghost story
Singapore Israel Asia Tenggara...
In 20-30 years time Tanks no need crew liao.
Seems like no target hit.

if all are hits then the title of this vid would have to change...
but SG so small, got space to run an insurgency meh?
You are young and have much to see my American friend.
For starters, take a look outside your country.

All miss haha

Cend0l69 not true
Cend0l69 not true the reason you see so many Chinese in the military is because majority of the Singapore population is made up of Chinese
It's only said like that because they themselves are the disgusting ones, only weirdos say things like that
WHY THE HELL DOES SINGAPORE NEED AN ARMY ANYWAYS?
why not? Singapore can't keep nagging other people for protection. Independence through self-support.
Actually, you are the one who is naive and sheltered. We need an army made up of professionals. SO IN OTHER WORDS THIS WHOLE THING IS A JOKE
All armoured, air force or navy is always chinese... No other race
iMail 19 not true
