    This was my first time competing in years. Things however didn't exactly go to plan... such is sport, and such is life! But there are many positives that can be taken away from such an event in life. You either get down on yourself and the situation or you look for the many positives that come out of it.
    The last few months of training have been a joy, and whatever the MRI shows I'm sure I'll be more than equipped to handle!

    Seb, I think this is exactly what Ilya meant when he was talking about your lifts on Insta the other day (get your lower back stronger). Crazy to think that man has great knowledge and could catch little details like these. All the best on your recovery. Hoping to see you back soon and stronger.

      In my unprofessional opinion, I think its caused by weak glutes and pelvic positioning in the catch for your snatch. The more you push your butt out, the less glute activation you create and more legs you will compensate for. I feel like a combination of weak adductor/abductor and tight hamstrings creates an almost inactive glute(s) that feels like it never fires where your lower back iss compensating for. I dont think the MRI will help because its probably just a muscular imbalance. I feel like you will find more "excuses" based on the MRI. All in all, I hope you feel better man.

      @@WeightliftingHouse check your hip internal rotation. If you lack hip IR range of motion that is the reason of back pain

      Also, your hips are probably SO tight that no amount of body weight rehab exercises like will "unlock" those super tight hip and glute muscles. You need someone to do some heavy DEEP (oh yes) tissue message to let those other stabilizing muscles do their job again.
      Muscles need to be able to lengthen and shorten under load. If those muscled are constantly shortened or at a lengthened position, they will only get tighter and weaker and other muscles will want to compensate for those weaker muscles.

    Gutted about the back. Hell, seeing you stirred up by your thoughts at midnight made my heart heavy. You shouldn't feel embarrassed about what isn't in your control. You didn't choose to be injured. It was nice to see your progress back to this point - to see you overcome all the challenges and still do the thing. Of all of the Weightlifting House content I've consumed over the years, your journey back to the platform has been the most relatable. Whenever you start up again, we'll all be in your corner cheering you on.

    I can hear the heartbreak about the contest Seb. But keep your head up man, you did great! I followed on IG to watch the prep and you worked hard, don’t be embarrassed. Sometimes lifting is all gas and sometimes lifting is ass, it’s all a part of life

    I totally feel you man. I’m 34, not very strong and signed up to compete with my gym friends in October. Probably going to open with a 68kg snatch…..
    It was great seeing you excited to compete and make it out to the platform. Your story is very relatable. Onwards and upwards right? Consistency and persistence is what leads to improvement.
    I mean, lifting builds killer legs, so at least there’s that 😊. Cheers man, great content, hope you can heal up that back quickly.

    I really feel for you, back injuries are the worst, and the timing is just so gutting. Honestly this makes me feel less alone with my struggles, and so I appreciate you sharing, and I’ll go donate for sure. I really hope you can find a reassuring plan for yourself for moving on from this, recover and rebuild, and meanwhile remember everything that you’re doing so brilliantly, the app, the channel, the streaming, everything!

    Thanks for being so vulnerable. You and a few others are the reason why I love WL so much. I feel your pain and embarrassment as I am in week 3 of 10 in a cast post surgery for a lunate dislocation of my left wrist after a failed clean. I was so embarrassed at the moment for doing so in front of others. 3 weeks later I just had to pivot. Think positively, hope/pray for a good recovery and embrace the humbleness. Reading the Word more. Spending time with family and focusing on other things changes your perspective on what really matters in life. I don’t mean give up on things and definitely hit PT/OT like crazy so you can return to lifting, but maybe with some downtime refocus on something else that’s important to you.

    longevity for the body is more important ❤️ I feel the same way. Haven’t been able to get anywhere close to my old powerlifting numbers, and can’t really progress in weightlifting without being scared of my back breaking. Every kilo counts for any small amount of progress. Definitely learned to stay healthy first over anything else. best of luck to you Seb!

    Don't let it get you down Seb. I have a lot of friends in lifting who also struggle with back injuries, and the road to recovery is never a straight line - there's always set backs and "retweaks". But I've also seen lots of my friends who had back injuries for years get back to consistent heavy training and set all time PRs again. The key is not to give up. You'll get there bud

    This was very moving to watch. I competed from 1981 to 1987 and after I didn't really follow the sport much except watching the Olympics and world champs. Thanks to you I am now following the sport again and I watch all your videos ❤️

    I haven't been following WH for that long, but since then you guys got the app released, streamed the European championships and now the Asian championships. And you've done a competition, Seb! All of those things are worth celebrating alone.

    Tweaked my low back in 2017. Specifically, I tore a ligament, and could barely walk or put socks on at the time. Although there’s no structural damage remaining (MRI confirmed last year), it still aches and has drained my confidence under the bar. My consultant suggested that radio frequency ablation of the nerves could be an option if it persists (which it is). Good on you for giving it a shot though, and I really do feel your pain, literally.

    I agree with everything you said about being able to get in the gym and train. The WH.AI program is the only program I've been able to follow for all 17 weeks (my chosen duration) without having to stop due to overuse or injury.

    I have never weight lifted before I found your channel. I went from not being able to do any of the movements to snatching 60kg for reps. For me it's not about the weight, it's about the love and appreciation of the sport and perfecting the movement in the process of making my whole body stronger.

    weightlifting ai is definitely incredible i am a brand new weightlifter and I just completed my first 10 weeks. the beginning my snatch and clean and jerk were super light. after the training cycle my snatch went from only being 115lbs to 190lbs and my clean and jerk from 175lbs to 235 lbs I really enjoy weightlifting and I wish I started doing this sooner especially being that I am 26 now. so thank you so much see for this app and hopefully one day well get the train together because if it wasn't for you I wouldn't be participating in such an amazing sport.

    Do not feel embarrassed or discouraged man! Us watching are not expecting perfection from you. It's inspiring to watch someone with a project as time and effort-consuming as yourself go the extra mile to train for the sport you (and we) love. It's relatable. As someone who is also coming back to lifting and not in the shape I was pre-pandemic, it motivates me to see your updates. It's a setback but also it serves to expose areas you need to improve in order to earn your performances in the sport. I'd suggest you look into the bulletproofing trend on TH-cam and do some exercises that will aim to strengthen your lower back so you can come back stronger. Best of luck!

    It isn't how low you fall, it isn't how high you rise after the fall, the inspiration to us is how diligently you strive to rise from that fall. I am subscribed to the channel (when I remember to check that youtube hadn't unsubscribed me😁). Weightlifting House is the best channel for weightlifting and you have built it into what it is.     Mate don't be embarrassed! I'd rather see 'real' content like this where someone gets injured and faces the struggle bravely than just endless videos of people smashing PRs. Everybody who lifts or plays sports gets injuries and that's when you actually need to see someone sharing your experience the most, so you know you're not alone and it's not all doom and gloom, that you can come back like they did. Anyway, sounds like you have a great attitude about the injury. Well done for making it back for this comp and I look forward to seeing you get back to your best in the future

    Seb! Stay positive brother. Weightlifting House has made a huge difference for me personally and always helps my motivation. Something to think about... Being BOTH a coach and athlete is almost impossible. We only have so much brain power and there is a huge difference between remembering techniques and DOING the technique.

    Thst 85 snatch looked so easy too. I was gobsmacked to see you talking after one lift as I knew it must be something ominous but was thinking you’d tell us you missed your next lifts. I have watched your progress and noticed a lot of power but thought the arms bend too fast on the turnover and you looked rocky in the low catch. Don’t give up, 29 is no way the end. I’m 61 and I still need to lift. Maybe try power or half squat snatch or split even? The mri and a weightlifting physiotherapist might help? And keep doing what you do. You hypnotised me into signing up for the Asian championship today with your infectious enthusiasm and I was powerless but to sign up. And never ever give up lifting something. Most days I can only lift empty Olympic dumbbells. Yesterday I put my back out with deadlift exercises on the bull worker. It means nothing, I will fix my back again and soon be Olympic lifting again. Seb, you’re a champ.

    I wouldn’t even consider myself a proficient weightlifter yet but in my personal, ‘anecdotal’ experience, injuries like this usually pop up 80% of the time when after a long hiatus of not training regularly or extensively, you accelerate the frequency of your training, as well as the volume and other demands.
    The good news is that it’s often just a warning sign and not a major injury.
    Between April last year and February this year, there were multiple instances where my back would spasm, producing the symptoms you are describing.
    I put it down to a few things:
    - Training infrequency (injuries would occur after having a week off or multiple days off)
    - Increasing volume or load too rapidly
    - Back, hips and core were too weak to handle the load
    - Improper form (although this is actually the lesser cause sometimes)
    By no means am I saying my problems and your problems are the same but I thought I’d share my experiences as they sound eerily familiar to yours. Hope you get better soon and back into training!

    Had to take two painkillers for my lower back pain while watching this. I know how it feels. Remember to never give up and start rehabbing as soon as possible.

However, in my opinion what really came across in your video is that you are really enjoying the process.     4months progress made…. Keep training ‘around’ your back mate… don’t give up or feel bad… this is the challenge most us face to varying degrees… you aren’t alone in this

    Do not be too hard on yourself. I've been in your situation and can tell you there is a rewarding training life after competitive weightlifting. MRIs etc can only take you so far - real life exercise experience, what works and what doesn't count more. A skilled and dedicated physical therapist can help some of the way - Henoch, Squat University and people of that ilk.

    Man I feel for you. Wrecked my lower back in 2015 and just this year is the first time I’ve PRed in 7 years. See a physical therapist if you can. I thought it was my lower back but it was a psoas issue. It connects to your L4/L5 and after strengthening my glutes and hip flexors my back gives me much less trouble. Not perfect but trainable. Don’t give up man. Our bodies are resilient. Sorry for the two cents but I wish you luck!

    Seb, fair play back at it as said enjoying it. Like me don't count PB'/PR's from especially so long always wanted to get back lifting no matter what weights just enjoy !
    Back issues originally then finished military other issues still deal with, every day is 'therapy' as weightlifting t-shirt have says. Just enjoy love of doing it bleep the weight, do your best though enjoying it. Congrats first competitive lift in 4yrs.

    not the same situation but a story about embarrassment. i am new to the sport and in the 102 kg category. Sometimes i am excited but the thought that lingers in the background "who am i to shout yell and feel proud when im nowhere near good" ... im having fun im enjoying the sport who cares. I am glad you are getting back into it!

    Back injuries are the worst. I messed up my lower back in 2017 picking up a pre-mix machine alone and it's never been the same since. I always get some sciatica pain when I ride motorcycles or pickup something heavy.
    Walking a lot (4-5km) helps a lot as well as stretching and hip mobility exercises, but it still sucks.

    I'm not an expert by any means, but something that might help strengthen your back is Jefferson curls, just work up every week from extremely light weight. They help to strengthen the back in flexed positions, which essentially makes your back stronger in unusual positions so if you have some form breakdown with heavy weight, you will be okay. They really helped me, good luck with your recovery

    Hard luck Seb, now might he a good time to reach out to Squat University. Ive had similar issues with my back going and patellar tendinitis and his books have helped immeasurably.

    That's too bad. Your opener with 85k looked easy, good for much more sans back pain. I can relate. Back in 1972, at the USA Junior Nationals, I pressed 340lbs, second to Paul Linello's 345, but better than the four or five other lifters in the 90k class trailing us. However, during that lift, I pulled my spinal erector muscles and had to withdraw. Barring that injury, I think I could have totaled enough for at least a bronze.

    Dude, I feel for you and there is nothing to be ashamed of. I trained over a year for the American masters and then tweaked my back on a 60% snatch 3 days out. I limped out on to the platform and bombed out in front of my family and kids. Shit happens man but we still love this sport.
    It reminds me of a quote from the Bad News Bears but I think it applies equally to weightlifting and baseball. ‘[Weightlifting] is hard. You can love it, but believe me it don’t always love you back. It’s kinda like dating a German chick, ya know?’

    No reason to feel embarrassed about back pain. I had intermittent back pain for 30 years which was exacerbated by deadlifts and cleans until I discovered Stuart McGill's book, "Back Mechanic" available on his website or on Amazon. Since reading the book 18 months ago and implementing his suggestions --> no back pain. Did switch to Hex bar deadlifts with less weight, but cleans are on par with previous results. I hope you can sort out the cause of your back pain and resolve it.

    It's probably just a muscle spasm, but if you can then take the MRI. I've had it happen before when my lower back got fatigued FROM CRUNCHES and I had to take two weeks off. Doc prescribed muscle relaxants. That was annoying. Never did a crunch again.

    Takes a lot of guts to even train hard with a past injury let alone step out on the competition platform. I take solace in the last sentence of the commonly quoted Theodore Roosevelt "man in the arena" speech.

    Hey Seb, really hard to hear about your troubles. I highly suggest reaching out to the pain and rehab team from Barbell Medicine before you seek imaging. They do amazing work and might be able to help recontextualise your injury and what it means to your career.

    just hoping you dont nocebo yourself too much due to this injury. also, maybe try to manage your stress better in the lead up to meets? (doing all your stuff for weightlifting house, and other potential stressors from your personal life). i feel like it would help out with preventing or managing pain or injury better. You'll definitely get over this and make a comeback, thats for sure.

    I started using WHAI today and I too have a fragile lower back, so why not add some accessory option to it for lower back exercises like reverse hypers and stuff

    This isn’t legitimately weightlifting house until you do a video on Paul Anderson tons of legit lifters say they personally watched him squat 1,200 lbs he’s the strongest ever. I know his technique wasn’t great and he didn’t lift the most in weightlifting but I think he was the strongest ever.

    This may be a stupid question but have you gone to any Physios or reached out to therapists like Aaron from squat university that specifically work with weightlifters? I feel like you need somebody that understands the unique challenges that weightlifting presents and it helps when the therapist is a weightlifter himself/herself

    Don't get an MRI Seb. The results are useless, the rehab is the same anyway. Even if you were pain free they'd likely find something 'wrong' with you.

    This is why you always bulletproof your back first and train full deep snatches instead of wanting to power everything before even thinking of competing.
