- The career or Giulia Imperio, and the rise in general of Italian weightlifting over the last few years has been incredible to watch. The lifting of Antonino Pizzolato, Giulia Imperio, Giulia Miserendino, Mirko Zanni, Cristiano Ficco, Lucrezia Magistris, Sergio Massida, and Oscar Reyes has been exciting to watch, and yet their performances as a whole didn't live up to those expectations.

It's pretty clear than the men's Chinese team is the peak of aesthetics, but the Italian ladies take the W on the women's side, even their eyebrows are so aesthetic.

This is interesting I always viewed this Italian team more calculated in approach, but the race for a qualification total forces them to almost shadow a old school Bulgarian go for broke mentality, I feel like the Paris qualifying standards are disruptive to a lot of different sports training blocks leading to the next Olympic games. I would love to hear your opinion or breakdown of the negatives of new qualification format in a video.
Italians seem to be always “crazy” across all their sports, in rowing they’re always down by miles throughout the middle , but then sprint to the front in a mad dash in the last 200m

One thing i noticed about Giulia Imperio is that she flexes her wrists inwards towards herself during the first pull where as most athletes keep a neutral wrist/slightly outwardly bent wrist. I don't have enough knowledge on the sport to know how it might affect her performance, just something I spotted while watching HookGrip/ATG slo mos
These days there seem to be a lot of weightlifters/coaches who preach cocking the wrists back in like Giulia does here. I think it's more personal preference.

2600m altitude really is kind of weird when you've been used to living below 200m altitude for most your life, I don't think that was respected enough when planing this event

I fully admit i'm not the expert, but i really fail to see how this method is much more beneficial than just taking some lighter attempts to get on the board. Surely if an athlete fails to record a total at consecutive meets it will start to affect them mentally... I feel like treating the first, or both first and second attempts as warmups to make that top 8 number would be more logical, and allows the lifter to build confidence by registering totals? Again, this isn't my job, and i'm sure i don't know better than the italian national team staff... but maybe a worlds performance like this will cause them to reconsider an play it more conservative at future compeititons... time will tell whther theyre right.

I was watching an interview w/ Meso Hassouna and he said that he always prefers to take the risk of going heavier as it gets him in the competition mindset, because if he goes too light he won’t try hard enough and end up missing due to silly mistakes. Ultimately I think it depends on the athlete.
Edit: though I also agree that it is bad attempt selection to make your first attempt a PR that you have missed several times in training hall. it should be challenging but not impossible. PRs are best as 2nd/3rd attempts
All the athletes had to lift heavier on competition day because of the new Olympic qualifying totals that they need - that’s why there were so many missed lifts the entire competition week as the athletes actually had to go 100% or more. I believe it was said in the commentary of the 73kg session they uploaded.

Do you think there is a optimal body composition/physique/muscle distribution for an olylifter.
I think that big strong glutes are super important for explosive lifting.
But many athletes especially females don't have it. Instead they have much bigger quads.
The power comes from the center (hips, core). I think having bigger quads (especially vastus lateralis) is a sign of a improper muscle activation pattern.
There are many reasons for this wrong pattern. Never the less the glutes should be the prime mover.
Uh legs start the movement, like when a girls legs are behind her shoulders and Ankles crossed behind her head kicking like mad ....thank God
