Your channel is so underrated, One Piece youtube is dominated by clickbait, big red arrows and circles but your content is so interesting and thought-provoking. Amazing work!
While this is true. There's nothing wrong with "clickbaitin". The problem is when the video doesn't back it up. He should definitely work/think more on his titles and thumbnails in order to get more click, since he indeed have great videos.
that's not the definition of clickbait. The definition is only "something to make people click". As in Oxford Dictionary: "material put on the internet in order to attract attention and encourage visitors to click on a link to a particular web page".

I was given this exact quote, “(on the internet) content whose main purpose is to attract attention and encourage visitors to click on a link to a particular web page.” This quote never once mentions the requirement of information either not being presented, or the information being false.

This would also explain why Shanks treated Blackbeard as such a major threat far before anyone else even really knew his name.

Regarding Shanks and his powerful Haki, remember that every time Shanks become a playable character in any OP games, his ability is always revolved around powerful Haki spam. Yeah, i know they aren't cannon, but they were still discussed by Oda himself at least during game development
@@Naomasa11 it could be both tbh. Most, if not all, of his attacks would be a regular basic attacks like sword slashes. But Shanks imbues it with so much haki it's pretty much turns into something akin to massive long lightsaber. Hell, some of his older moves involves him walking while throwing explosive haki casually (a reference to him appear in WB ship to warns about Ace's chase for BB)

Shanks should be viewed as a Prophet among the pirates...which is why the Gorosei allows him to dialogue with them. He has confronted Whitebeard with dire warnings about Blackbeard's growing threat ...when he confronted Kaido, his words must haveconvinced the Oni Yonko to reconsider his attack against Whitebeard. Whatever Shanks says. ...it cannot be ignored.
A very interesting theory! The only issue I can think of is during Ace's flashback when he meets Shanks, Shanks did not know who Ace was despite his bounty and reputation at the time. Obviously upon hearing he is Luffy's older brother he acts friendly and drinks with him, but it was very vague at that point if Shanks realized Ace was Roger's son. Ace was named after Roger's sword, and that is a fact I'm sure Shanks noticed if he didn't initially know who Ace was related to at first meeting. That's why I'm not 100% convinced Shanks meant to give Ace the Gomu Gomu no mi on Dawn Island, especially since he didn't seem to show much interest in Ace during his pirate career up until he decided to hunt Blackbeard. It's possible after Luffy ate the fruit he decided as you said to bet it all on him, and made the call to let Ace find his own way in the world without his interference.
Or; Shanks knew _perfectly well_ who Ace was, and kept his cards close to his chest as he always does. By that point, Luffy had already eaten his fruit, and considering giving Ace the fruit was just no longer part of the plan.

I think Coby during the war was an interesting point. Maybe he changed fate by using his free will. We have the many different types of will power in One Piece, but perhaps free will is the strongest of them all and able to change fate. Coby's free will taught to him by Luffy in the first chapter, maybe 'free will' is the will of D. Shanks taught it to Luffy and Luffy taught it to Coby, they each in turn changed fate. While the majority of the marines have given up their free will to follow orders.

Also with the relatively new revelation of Shanks telling Beckmann that they should go get the One Piece makes sense, if he foresees someone like blackbeard reaching Laugh Tale before Luffy he'd want to make sure it doesn't fall into the wrong hands.

I like how chill this channel is, others es to to drill into your ears and talk so fast and superlatives but I like how slow this feels.
This video made me curious about how Shanks got injured by Blackbeard with the scar on his eye as well as if Blackbeard knowingly went for his eyes, maybe his left eye in particular. I don't know when Shanks' jolly roger was depicted as having the red slashes through the left eye but I always assumed it was due to the scar on his left eye from Blackbeard. If the jolly roger had the lines across Shanks' left eye before this incident, could it be depicting a foreshadowed future-sight ability as the red lines across his left eye might denote something more than the injury, or maybe it was never depicting the scar if Shanks had the scar before we see the jolly roger. Like if Oda is showing us that his eyes, left specifically, have something more to them or an ability we haven't figured out yet. This would give Blackbeard, another character seemingly in the know, a reason to target the eye and since Blackbeard has so many undiscovered abilities and knowledge maybe he knew to target the eye for this reason. Hopefully someone out there who has more One Piece knowledge than me has thought about this cause there is so much I have missed in manga and anime but it feels like a possible hint at something more by Oda. I wouldn't be surprised if he hinted at a Shanks ability from day 1 that we have yet to see, Oda being Oda.
Hopefully a year later isn't too late for this to be seen cause I am genuinely curious and hope you, Hidden Island, or anyone else with more One Piece know-how can respond and tell me if I'm missing something obvious or something. As for the final question of the video; I'm someone who's been introduced to one piece through spoilers rather than the manga itself. I don't mind getting spoiled cause op is so dense you can't really have it all spoiled. So I've been reading one piece and having the nika twist in mind is an entirely different experience... You start seeing so many references.
For example I've recently binged water 7, Enies lobby and post EL and the most striking thing was the 3rd character popularity poll where Oda says Luffy shines like the sun, or iceberg saying the 1000 sunny is going to "cross the thousand seas shining like the sun" or how blackbeard ponders what will win between the darkness and the sun. What a time to be a one piece fan!

Nah this makes hella sense when when you think about how in buggys flashback, the day roger died, shanks told him he changed his mind about going after the one piece, leading the next generation n shit. he mustve realized something, depending on what roger told him. buggy thought he was “goalless” n parted ways with him, but in the end the goal is to lead joyboy’s will inheritor on the right path, knowing its not shanks himself, passing down the hat to the right man.

It's a nice theory you have there! I like it, I also have a theory of my own:
So when Luffy's awakening came we focused too much around that the Gomu Gomu no mi is a Zoan fruit and not a paramecia, but we did not pay attention to a major detail, the fact that the gorosei said that zoan fruits have a mind of their own. My theory is that when Shanks was talking to Roger before Roger left the ship and asked him a couple questions before crying, I believe that Roger may have intrusted Shanks with the job to find the Gomu Gomu no mi, since it is really valuable and cannot be in the hands of the World Government. So I believe that Shanks had the goal to find that fruit and steal it from the World Government. And since Zoan fruits have a mind of their own the devil fruit told Shanks to take it to Luffy. The Gomu Gomu no mi's rightful owner. it feels too much of a Coincidence that Shanks had the most important fruit in the world in front of Luffy in an open chest with his guard down.
On the subject of future vision, fate, and how an augur like Shanks can be surprised, I like to imagine that it's sort of a situation like The Outsider from Dishonored. In the first game specifically, he is characterized as being able to see all of time, and all possible outcomes. However, he doesn't actually know which choices people will make. So he gives powers to people that are significant in this world, people who hold the potential to cause great change and upheaval, and then he sits back and watches with great interest.
Similarly, I think that those gifted with future vision aren't seeing "the future," they are just seeing the most likely outcome of the current circumstances. I mean, Haki is supposed to be an extension of natural abilities, and Observation Haki is specifically meant to be instinct. I'm sure we've all had moments in our lives where we moved out of the way of something that we hadn't yet consciously become aware of. That's the result of your collective senses making an informed decision and bypassing the process of running it past your logical mind. You're picking up a collection of tiny inputs, and putting them together to see a greater whole, and act on something that, from your perspective, has not yet happened. It makes sense then that all Observation Haki's future vision is, is just a far greater degree of detail in this situation. You're extrapolating on what your heightened senses are picking up, and forming a visual image of this prediction.
Thus, Luffy demonstrates unpredictability. Katakuri was considered near invincible due to his future sight that surpassed the emperors, yet Luffy eventually got the better of him. Shanks has incredible Observation Haki, even if we don't believe that he can see the future, and so it is impressive that a dumb kid managed to do something like stealing the Model Nika, right under his nose. Joyboy's whole thing was being weird, ridiculous, and unpredictable. It makes sense then for the fruit bearing his will to select a person so unpredictable and goofy as Luffy.

I agree with your supposition that Shanks has Future Sight on another level compared to other combatants with precedence set via Madame Sharley.
I think the theory about Shanks having future sight plays really well into Luffys origin and the themes of Fate in one piece as a whole.
One of the few, If not the only time we see Shanks taken aback and shocked in the series is when Luffy eats the Hito Hito no Mi, Gaining its powers. Sure, It could be a bit of a gag considering the comical tone of the scene, But maybe shanks isn’t just shocked about Luffy eating the fruit, But also by the fact that Luffy changed the course of the future by forcing himself into the position of “chosen one”, and Shanks himself couldn’t predict it.
In the end, Luffy was literally free enough to act outside destiny, at first it was in a small way, But later chapters would show how consequential luffy would become. And I think that first incident with Shanks and the Hito Hito no Mi is what made him so interested in Luffy alongside his Devil Fruit.

Also, something not mentioned in this vid but in others on the channel is Blackbeard's philosophy, which is indeed fatalist and subscribes to the idea that people like himself were _destined_ to be where they are, as if fate is rigid.
Blackbeard is an evil Luffy. If we consider the future fixed, it suits Blackbeard, not Luffy, who believes every person should decide their own path. Interestingly enough, Luffy believes in always taking the freest path, and as a result, plans almost nothing and figures it out as he goes. Blackbeard waits years, decades, before acting on his plans, because he believes in destiny and is okay wasting valuable time on a specific strategy.
Interestingly, if this theory holds, Shanks was an agent of fate, bringing the hat and the fruit to Ace. Ace had been intended by other forces to be The New Pirate King which is ultimately not what Ace wanted at all - he wanted a father. And he got one in the form of Roger's sworn enemy.
Luffy _does_ want to be Pirate King, he actively wants to choose the hardest road possible at all times. Shanks could recognize that, and I think when he comes back to save Luffy from the bandits, by that point he has accepted the path that has been laid and he is doing what he can to safeguard Luffy.
Edit: ofc, if not for the timeline, my own crazy theory is that Ace is actually Dragon's son and Luffy is Roger's son, as a final layer of protection for the pirate king. I'm okay to be wrong here, but look at Luffy and Roger and then look at Ace and Dragon and tell me I'm not onto something lol
Amazing theory but I disagree with future sight only seeing the outcome. It forsees what will happen and the steps that take it there. Katakuri asked why pudding will fall to the ground because he didn't know or couldn't fathom that pudding was moved by sanjis words. He saw luffy was going to break mother carmels picture but he stopped him, preventing that outcome, while brook breaking it later was just a coincidence. Katakuri used future sight to see that the organ harvester underworld boss was going to kill some of bege's men, but he shot him with jellybean to stop that and beges men were safe at the end. It's a bit nitpicky but I just wanted to point it out. The farther in the future you see with future sight, it gets exponentially muddier until only the vague final outcome is seen.
When u mentioned shanks originally going to the village for ace, my mind was blown it makes so much sense.

Something like: This guy will not stop creating havoc, until he gets what he wants. Give him a title at a time, in order to cut his havoc short.
What Shanks keeps to himself is: Luffy is the one to beat him, but will probably also end the World government so better be quiet.

Small thing to add to 14:40 Ace and Luffy are mentioned in universe to look very similar and that's also true as kids, so if shanks saw a scruffy kid with black hair eating the Gum-Gum fruit it wouldn't be too strange. Either that or the will that Zoan fruits have could have changed the future to have Luffy eat it knowing he would be able to awaken it because his personality matches that of Joyboy's.

One of my lifes ultimate goal is to just genuinely sit with oda and talk about the themes of One Piece maybe over some tea. It doesnt seem like he presents these themes in a tongue and cheek fashion like other mangakas. To truly understand one piece, one must atleast have deep understanding of these themes and even world history, economics politics and stuff like that.

In The story of Mahabharata, theres this character named Khrisna, somewhat Shanks remind me of him.. he’s a God in human form (Vishnu) as God of creation and he is the one pulling all the strings to this epic story, guiding the protagonists to retain the throne they’ve once lost (they were the actual heir of the throne btw.).
Katakuri as a commander could see the future, its pretty reasonable to say that shanks can indeed see a time into the future

This theory is great!! Another thing that adds legitimacy to this is when shanks sees luffys new bounty poster with his Nika form on it, he says something along the lines of “ok guys time to go get the one piece”. Pretty much supporting what you’re saying as him being a gate keeper for it and waiting for the person with joy boys will to get to it. It’s like him saying “finally, it’s time” let’s go protect it until he gets here. Love all the Arthurian connections as well. Oda may be (in my opinion) the greatest story writer of all time when it comes to repurposing / reinventing certain key stories, religious aspects and symbolism, and the like into new story beats that have his original thoughts and progressions but show their clear inspirations. Idk if the last part made sense but that’s why he’s such a good writer. He’s taken a lot of stories and ideas throughout history that are so influential for a reason (they’re great/true/fun/interesting) and that creates that “can’t put my finger on why this is so good” feeling throughout his entire story
Also not just the story elements but actual cultures and real history as well. He creates such a real feeling world because of how deep he is with creating believable versions that his own characters have. Could go on and on. Add in how talented he is just art wise and that’s more than most people could ever ask for. He succeeds in all aspects of the art form

The point about predicting future may be essentially by a deep understanding of ‘will’.
When Luffy ate the fruit, he didn’t actively seek it, but just ate it with an empty head as he was hungry and took the closest thing next to him

I believe Shanks comes from one of the Five Families of the West and perhaps was a world noble intended to be a gorosei
The position of shanks in the world of one piece is that which Roger could not fulfill because of his personality and temperament. And that is to guide the world to its fated conclusion. Meaning that he is the literall guiding hand which roger was supposed to be.

That was a plausible, well informed theory. Nearing the stories final act Iyar the premonition shanks acts as a guardian of the one piece and would serve the final challenge luffy to acquire it. I had also qualms with the insinuation always was it luffy’s fate to evoke the pirate king, though this video recontextualized my understanding of the story. Thank you!

In the DUNE universe, prescience only operates in a field of possibility, with some events being very very certain and others being very fluctuating. Some can be observed to "become certain" after certain conditions are met when if these conditions were not met the events would have remained fluctuating. Maybe future sight in One Piece works similarly
