My sister had her two little boys in a private daycare, and one day the oldest boy mentioned that the daycare lady "smelled funny". She drops by unannounced the next time the boys were there. Sure enough, the lady was drinking. Sis pulled the boys right then and there.
If you have your children in daycare, licenced or not, make it a point to drop by unannounced, on different days and times. If they protest, I'd worry about why they're protesting.

If your very excuse involves admitting that you can't handle the number of kids you're responsible for, WHY DO YOU HAVE THAT MANY KIDS THERE? Even if it weren't such a TINY apartment (I've had sheds/workshops bigger than that!), she KNEW that she either needed to reduce the number or hire help, as what if instead of just making noise, one of the children electrocuted themselves in an exposed outlet, and she didn't notice? But there are some very good caretakers who run unlicensed daycares. I've known a couple of them myself. They just can't afford all of the requirements to get a license. But they also don't watch 10 or 12 kids all at once, so they technically don't need a license.

    • @Rhaenarys
      @Rhaenarys 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

@@rebeccahetrick6576 agreed. Plenty of people watch their family members kids not because the parents don't care, but because they trust the family member and yes...its cheaper, which means affordable.
A lot of people don't consider the fact that many single mothers live off the system because that's pretty much their only choice. Most daycares cost as much as your entire min wage paycheck, making it not even worth working just to send your kids away. So having cheaper or free options like that is almost always preferable. It's not about not caring about your kids, it's about not having enough affordable choices. Plus, why not have grandma or auntie watch them!?

FWIW, while living there, OP had no way to prove that the landlady was being racist; all he had was the assumption that that's what was happening, given her comments. Only after his apartment was up for rent again could he effect a sting operation to prove her active racism and discrimination.

For most people, it's not worth their time to go out of their way to cut people down for wrongdoings.
But when you give them an excuse to, now nothing is stopping them from putting you in your place, because they have a moral (and often legal) standing that can't be refuted. Humans are good at turning negative emotions into benefits. A number of inventions or accomplishments, for example, came about because someone said 'you can't do that'.
Is it right to let someone who's conducting illegal or obviously immoral activity go just because it's not directly affecting you? no.
but in no way does that make them as bad as the people conducting such activities.
Additionally, starting a fight with the person who owns your house can and will always cause problems for you, and cops can be pretty iffy on helping people. Him getting an eviction notice gave him a method to prove the landlord's discrimination while also preventing her from giving him backlash for fighting her.

While this guy is most likely a jerk sober, as well as when he's using, there are many times when addicted people just need someone to talk to, a person who can help them, help themselves. My lawyer said to me that he saw who I could be if given the chance, he wanted to help me have that chance by getting me into the program...he told me that no matter how horrible I thought I was, no matter how badly I thought I couldn't be saved and wasnt worth the effort, (my own words from previous covos with him) that I deserved the chance to try and make that untrue, and that I wasn't horrible I just did what I thought I needed to do to survive, and that everyone is worth saving. And his words stuck with me and as time went on and I went to those meetings and those group classes, got on methadone to help with the cravings (heroin and meth addiction for me) eventually it turned from faking it to wanting to truly do it and be it. I think it was the day I woke up, and realized that I actually liked looking back at myself in the mirror. No longer did I see a girl I hated being, a girl I had once sworn i'd never be - doing things to survive that I swore I'd never do - I saw *me* like the true version of myself that I kept hidden under all the drugs and fuckery and kept beaten down, shoved behind a mask. I'm proud of everything I've overcome to be where and who I am today, and also of every other addict who has made their way to sobriety. Story 3 was a big risk - if there was multiple witnesses (the author himself notes that every house in the community turned on its lights/was disturbed by the music, and would have wanted to track down and hold the perpetrator to account) to whom the noisy house really was, then no amount of covering up would have helped. The police could have also been crafty, and left an officer/witness nearby on foot, and they'd have easily seen what was going on after the car left. The notion that nobody else would have called this in and pointed the finger, which would have exonerated the neighbor, makes this not impossible, but arguably implausible. It was a big risk that the police didn't decide to do simple division, approach other homes for witnesses, or even obtain entry to the home (if they believed the home was actually occupied, as per multiple witnesses, but they were hiding, depending on what country you're in, that can give grounds for entry, but not in others) - I wouldn't want to risk my family getting arrested on chance.

@@realulli Not quite sure how that circles the square with any reason you're responding to. How'd any of the third party neighbours (most of the potential witnesses) know that the annoying neighbor was the only witness who acted to call? They cannot knowing withhold out of malice against the pest neighbor if they don't know the pest was the caller, which they won't unless they're omniscient/have a good explanation to. It's a mighty big assumption that nobody doesn't have the foresight of a god and doesn't speak freely - and then you're back to an angry wife and sister getting arrested for this long shot scheme.

Regarding the duplex / daycare story: the landlady could not have "evicted" him that quickly. What she did was possibly terminate the lease / rental agreement and given him until some date to move out. The lease would have spelled out the conditions for doing this. If OP had ignored the move out date, THEN she would have had to start the eviction process, which is a legal process involving court in which OP could have appealed. If the court had decided to evict, you would have a certain amount of time to vacate before the sheriff shows up and physically removes you. At least this is how it works in every state I've ever heard of.

Honestly it worries me how much it costs to call an ambulance in America…. I live in the UK and our ambulances are free to call for. Occasionally there’ll be an advert telling us how much it costs the NHS for each medical service (this is aimed at cutting costs to the NHS by stopping extraneous calls, for instance wanting a lift to hospital when you don’t necessarily need one)
The last ad campaign I saw said this-
    ‘Calling an ambulance-£247
    Stepping into A&E-£124
    Stepping into a GPsurgery-£32
    A call to NHS 111-£16
A click on NHS choices website-£0.46.
    Stop, think, and choose well.’
Those costs are what it costs the NHS, not what it costs you. The whole medical service is actually free for us to use as many times as we need to, with the exception of NHS dentistry (£24 band 1 which includes cleaning and X-rays, £65 band 2 which includes band 1 plus tooth removal, filling etc, and £282 which includes all of the above plus crowns and dentures). Shocking how a supposedly first world country treats it taxpayers who need help medically.

So one morning-after, the disgusted neighbor made a charitable call upon the young men. One kid, seriously hungover, answered the door to find his kind, caring neighbor bearing a large platter of runny over-easy eggs and smoked oysters, saying here, you'll need some serious protein after all that drinking, and shoved it right under the kid's nose. The kid's eyes bugged out, he clasped both hands over his mouth and dashed for, presumably, the bathroom. The neighbor yelled after him that he'd be happy to do that anytime they had a party!! For grievous offenses (which never happened) the HOA could put a lien on the property. The HOA members have gotten angry at home owners who tried to use them as their private police. “My neighbor is parking his car in the lane. Stop him.” They should be talking to their neighbor. It’s not the HOAs duty to do that. The HOA did nothing and eventually the neighbors figured it out.

I had a neighbour next door, who rented from an owner who had previously lived there and was still a very good friend. At first I got along fine with the new people, although I started to keep my distance when I realized the wife, had a habit of calling the police and by laws officers on people who annoyed her. Then she decided to start on me.
First she ordered her doormat husband to stop talking with me. Then she called the police and made a false claim, and the second I had closed the door on the police I phoned my friend the owner of her house and offered her fair market value for the house. She accepted my offer. I spent the next couple of weeks calling the police every time the neighbours got loud and unruly, and being drug addicts that happened every night. By the time I had possession I had a dozen valid reasons for summary eviction.
Problem solved. Don't screw with your neighbours when they can buy and sell you a dozen times.

That fake “patient” problem is easy enough to take care of: when he refuses to enter the ER, call the sheriffs department and press charges on him for abusing the 911 system. It happens all the time, I don’t know what was preventing you from doing that.

At the time that was related in the story (i.e. before cell phones) camcorders were still very expensive (over a thousand dollars US), and very few private citizens were going to shell out for one. That's not lucky, it's being in the know. The OP was a two-way radio guy, well up on his tech awareness.

Cant believe the first story, they said “it turns out that discrimination and choosing your tenants based on race it’s illegal” not shit Sherlock. Anybody could have told you that. Discriminations is illegal on all aspects of life and law. The only exceptions to choosing people based on race or ethnicity it’s for acting jobs, financial aid, etc.

I am a paramedic in California for a reasonably busy Fire Department. We have an obligation to transport everyone but we also can get signed refusals. I know that if I had a patient who was abusing the system my chief would do the same as OPs supervisor and Medical Director. Good to see more stories involving EMS.

OP in the first story was kinda cruddy. First they said the landlord didn't want to rent to POC's, but that wasn't their business as long as they were able to rent a place. Then they turned around and said that they aren't one to sit around while an injustice is being committed. And finally, they employ the help of their black coworkers to take down the landlord. All of a sudden they care about POC's being discriminated against, when it benefits THEM to take the landlord down! It's the fake activism and exploiting BLK folk for me! 🤷🏾‍♀️

I used to know an ambulance driver here in the UK where, thanks to the glory of the NHS, the service is free at point of use. He was full of stories of the service being abused. One of his "regulars" always insisted on taking a photo of his "saviours" and had a cork board covered in such pictures, His ambition, apparently, was to have a picture of "Every ambulance-driver in Essex."
The truth was that he was a sad and lonely man, who just wanted some human interaction.
