Unfortunately even the best teachers are over worked and can't keep track of much more than their class work and lesson planning.
Fun perspective- in the US a child care provider cannot have more than 15 children per adult, 16-30 requires 2, etc, and a child care center can be shut down and loose their license for breaking it. The average class size in the US is 32...
A lot of our government systems in the US that are there to protect the innocent are already over whelmed with work, which creates apathetic bureaucrats, which in turn piles more work onto the ones that care until they become apathetic, but without essentially tearing apart the entire government and rebuilding it we don't have any viable way to initiate change.

Having grown up in the foster care system from when I was 8 (home wasn't safe for any of us at that time) sometimes the foster home wasn't much better. The only thing that saved me was uncles and aunts took all of us in (we were 10 strong) and raised us. I know we all have thanked our aunts and uncles and cousins for the way they helped us kids. Some of the kids moved home but others only moved back after Mom and Dad were divorced and it was safe for our children to be with Grandma with Grandpa out of the picture. Foster care can be a difficult time in anyone's life whether you are in a foster home or a parent of a child in foster care. I often wonder if there is a better way to help families in need to avoid foster care in the first place rather than leaving it to an emergency situation that requires so much more than what might have been prevented.

I thought that the ending was fake, as burning a house down is not something you can actually get a permit for. As it turns out, you can, and people do! From what I have read, most FDs only let you do it as a training exercise for their guys, but some places treat it the same way that any other controlled burn on your land would be treated. Gg op for dishing out a satisfying and legal revenge.

It's happened in the small rural town I live in. Except it's the firemen who start the fire, then practice putting it out, start it again, put it out again, wash, rinse, repeat.
It's usually done to houses that are dilapidated beyond economical repair.
After the debris is cleared, the property owners build a new house on the lot.
(This is done only occasionally. Most of the time, a crew will come in with a front end loader and backhoe and tear the old house down.)

Different places, different rules. The local fire department did a training burn on a former Burger King. You could smell the ghosts of burgers and fries for many miles.

    • @PatrickRsGhost
      @PatrickRsGhost 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

It varies from state to state, county to county. In most cases you have to call the local fire department for a burn permit, they'll ask what you plan to burn, you tell them what it is, and depending on weather conditions and other factors, they may give you the OK over the phone, they may have to come out to inspect the proposed burn site, or they may insist on doing the controlled burn themselves.
I remember my dad calling the local fire department many times when we were cleaning up my great-grandparents' old farm back in the late 90s. My great-grandmother had passed away three years earlier and my great-granddad went into a nursing home.
A lot of the buildings were overgrown with brush, and we'd cut the brush down so we could get to the buildings to assess their condition (salvagable or not) and to clean the buildings themselves out. We'd pile the brush up in one area, douse it with kerosene (wasn't as volatile as regular gasoline), and let 'er rip.
When my dad was planning to burn down the old barn, which had collapsed from brush overgrowth, age, and a couple of heavy storms, my mom and I both urged him to call in the local fire department (volunteer FD) and let them do it. Give them some exercise. It was close to a heavily-traveled dirt/gravel road and was way bigger than your average pile of brush, but my dad said he'd handle it.
Famous last words. He got it started maybe about 9 AM or so. Called my mom at work (he had taken early retirement due to his health) and reported it was going good and strong. 2 PM rolls around, it's still going. 5 PM (she got off at 6), still going, might have to stay the night to keep an eye on it. She told him she'd come down to stay with him.
She stopped by the house we lived in at the time (in another city an hour or so away from where my great-grandparents lived), picked up their meds for the night and next morning, gave me some money to call for pizza, and headed on down to the farm. I can still remember the hot coals that were still burning three days later, on a Saturday. There were some old milk jugs full of oil stored up in various places (my great-grandad used them as drain pans whenever he changed the oil on his old Ford 9N tractor), and a ton of old hay. Excellent fodder.

The events in this story are horrifying but not surprising, I have no doubt this story is 100% true. I'll be honest, I put off watching this video for the longest time because any media depicting foster care takes me back to my time in the system, and I'd really rather not revisit those years. My best friend grew up mostly in a foster home a lot like the one in the story. Unfortunately a lot of foster parents treat it as a for-profit prison. They get money from the government to raise the kids, spend a tiny fraction on the kids, and force the kids to do all of the chores and whatever other work they can find for them.
Just as one example, my friend wore glasses and his foster parents got extra money every year that was supposed to go to getting him eye tests and new glasses. He didn't get new glasses once in the years he was with that foster family: even when one of the arms broke. He had to replace the arms of his glasses with bamboo that he glued together because they wouldn't pay for new frames (despite getting money from the government specifically for that), which of course meant he got made fun of constantly at school because kids are jerks about things like that.
He had absolutely nothing of his own, all the foster kids had to share rooms, all of their clothes were second or third hand, and they didn't get to eat the proper meals that the foster parents got: theirs was always the cheapest things like rice, beans & pasta that were easy enough for one of the foster kids to make for all of them.
It's all for the money. Everything that my friend & the other foster kids had to suffer through was so that the foster parents could keep more government money for themselves, including the physical abuse. That was to keep them in line so that they wouldn't tell people how badly they were being treated & the foster parents wouldn't lose income either by having kids taken away or by having to spend more on the kids. And much like in the story, my friend's foster parents were very active in their church and hid behind their religion to try to pretend to be decent people.

I'm glad he at least got the satisfaction of hurting Linda, but... I think a better revenge might have been to simply buy the house, evict Linda, and then convert it to a rental property (or refurbish and sell it for a higher profit). He would have had a steady stream of income _IN ADDITION_ to the satisfaction of keeping something away from his tormentor.

It breaks my heart to think they’ve failed yet another family. Legally burning the house down felt good and I didn’t even see it. I feel like sexual assault is one of the things in fostercare that people seem to overlook until the victims become offenders then they punish just the people at the end of it. Having worked with foster kids and heard some of their stories has really motivated me to put foster parenting on my list of things to do before I die. My cousin adopted her foster kids last month and I’m glad to see them in such good hands.

I was a foster kid, I was adopted by my foster family, my adoptive mom was a DCFS worker and hearing this story just set my blood boiling. People abuse the system to gain access to kids for nefarious reasons and this story hit all of them. It's terrifying to know how many workers she had to whip in shape to keep such things from happening under her watch, all because they wanted to avoid paperwork.
But take my word for it, there are good SW out there who will do everything in their power and pull every technicality there is to make sure a kid is safe. I, a hand full of girls and at least 16 boys all learned this because of the excellent worker my mom was. after she retired she admitted to somethings that would have ended her career if they had been discovered. she always said they deserved a chance and she would do anything to make sure they got that chance. oh and those kids I mentioned earlier? Those were just the ones my parents fostered (not at the same time obviously) she did the same for hundreds of cases she worked

A huge part of the problem of why the foster care system is so messed up it’s because of people like her & my foster mother who only had foster kids for the money. Once my foster moms house was paid off she didn’t keep any more foster kids. Not only that but on top of the monthly stipend that they get they also get food stamps and the kids get the free medical and all that. We were also given a clothing allowance which my foster sisters and brothers and I never did receive.
