  • How to Foam Roll the Piriformis to relieve low back pain and sciatica
Sciatica has many causes, one of them is from a tight piriformis.
In this video I show you the best way to safely foam roll your glutes and piriformis for glute pain, hip pain, low back pain and sciatica.
Why does the piriformis get tight?
When only on one side we typically find a tight piriformis on the side that the sacrum has shifted posterior or backwards.
This structural shift , imbalance , and restriction causes the piriformis to over work and become tight.
This is how you can isolate the piriformis to loosen up the tight muscle and help to relieve piriformis syndrome and sciatic nerve pain.

It took a lot of rolling over multiple days, but this finally really improved my condition. The part of the video where he talks about the piriformis was the key for me.

Mother of God. Once I hit the piriformis in the right glute that thing lit up like a Christmas three!
Not in a bad way but rather "this area is extremely tight and sensitive". I know what I'm working on now!

I woke up with pain in my left glute and hip during the night. After doing these simple exercises with the roller this morning, it feels so much better. This guy knows what he's talking about. Thanks!

This exercise helps the pain I have in my hips but I find I need to do it on a hard floor to get enough pressure on the hip and relieve tension.

My chiropractor recommended a foam roller so I bought two different kinds after watching this video and doing it, the pain/tightness is gone for now.

Hi there. Great and easy to follow video. Could I ask how often these exercises are recommended to be performed. I was advised that approx every 2-3 days so that I didn’t over do it. I do also see a registered osteopath. Thanks 😊🙏🏻

I recently had rotator cuff surgery on my right shoulder, but am out of my sling. Is there a way to do this on my right side without putting pressure on my right arm?

Please 🙏🏼 I have pain on the top of my back elephant bone I don’t know how else to describe it… Perhaps it’s the hipbone? It feels like a pinched nerve and I’m not sure if it’s sciatica because I don’t have pain going down the back of my leg into my foot. I have pain or a burning sensation sometimes that occurs on the outside of my right thigh. Are these exercises right for me? Thank you so much.

When I hit “the spot” where the most pain is, I feel something moving back and forth as I roll. It feels like a rubber band moving by the pressure of the roller. Does that make sense?

Dr. J, what do we do about the shifted sacrum that causes the problem in the first place? Does this rolling also shift that back?

Hey Jake, my specialty is chiropractic, so i'd be getting adjusted in the way that most appropriately would bring proper function back to the sacrum

Trying this now. Lifting the other leg over helps a lot. And thanks for the reminder of going s l o w l y....very helpful. I'll add this to my daily routine now. I've returned to hot power yoga after four years and oh boy, my muscles are very tight in the hips and glutes and buttocks. It's time to roll!!

Whate you are doing is making the pain worse. Ditch Foam rolling as it puts more pressure on your nerve. Neither stretching is working.
All what you have to do is strengthening the glutes and the core.
