For Halloween, I'm analyzing the sound design in the first Five Nights at Freddy's game, which demonstrates the unique roles audio can play in a horror game! Sound isn't just a scare tactic; it can support or diminish the amount of control a player feels over a nightmarish scenario.
After this video, I made a follow-up video about this game's sequels! • Sound Intensity and th...

This video's gotten a bit of information wrong. For instance, the animatronic scream in FNAF 1 is not a recording of a child screaming, it's a sound clip of a woman's scream from an 80's sci-fi horror film called _Inseminoid_ (1981). Apologies for that!
i haven't gotten scared by FNAF in a long time, this video actually got me a few times!

I agree. A bunch of red herrings- and a bunch of helpful cues.
Also fnaf 2 is heavily dependent on audio if you play 10/20 mode

16:40 the fact he didn't play a jumpscare to demonstrate how well the sound design was done in this game is my favourite part of the video
Same here because I was so tense, waiting for one
I hardly waited for a jumpscare, I had felt myself being tricked by him :)))
I read this as jumpscare warning so when I got to that point I was terrified waiting lmfao
16:07 So theres this theory that I find quite interesting. The theory is that when the pizzeria was open and the power were to go out, Freddy would start playing his song and lighting up his eyes to attempt to calm down distressed children. Since his song seems to be in a music-box-lullaby-style, this would make a lot of sense.
Yeah, that's actually a good theory. Because why else would he have that function installed?
I think that sort of design idea exists a fair amount in the series. iirc the Toy-series animatronics attack you because they’re programmed to protect children & the Glamrocks (at least Freddy & Chica) are designed to actively aid lost or stressed children until their parents or guardians can find them. In both cases you’re just sufficiently unfortunate that they’re instead trying to kill you.

So, if you know that Freddy is the one in the office - and it's close to 6 am - you can hide in the camera until the night ends, assuming you have enough power left to do so.

HONESTLY THE MOST HORRIFYING SOUND EFFECT IN THE GAME.
the labored breathing makes you aware that they are not only right in front of you, but also somewhat alive. the breathing sounds so painful and its so scary 10000/10 horror
This made me thinking: These animatronics are possessed by children, so something that you know... lived. Is this their poor attempt to go after their habits by nature trying to breath... without any sort of lungs? Just by analysing this is giving me shivers down my spine which once again shows how perfect this horror game is.
I WAS ABOUT TO COMMENT ABOUT THIS I HAVE EARBUDS IN IN A DARK ROOM AND I HID UNDER MY BLANKET

They're just kids, man... they didn't deserve this.
@@heavenlydusk That's What I Image When I Hear It.
okay, the swirly sound is actually somewhat advantageous. It's programmed to play every now and then once an animatronic comes too close for comfort. As in, somewhere right outside your office. It gives you the information that you are in immediate danger.
EXACTALLY. That is true and it actually took some people to realize that
Everytime i play this albeit not often either i miss that audio cue or it never plays. Does play with others tho
In addition, I'm pretty sure the more subtle, "darker" audio that he shows just after plays after one of the animatronics leaves the stage, or whenever their "aggressiveness level" gets above 0. I can't remember which.
@@heheheiamderpmatter375 Afaik, the weird swirling noise actually plays when the animatronics move in general, and the other one plays when they're super close.

8:41 Circus is extremely stressful to hear when you put it at full volume playing fnaf. The song goes so fast and quick that it feels like a lot is happening even though not much is happening. One of my favourite audio clips from the game is foxy’s “singing” in FNAF 1. That little “dum dum diddley dum dum” is really creepy, and when you first play through you have no idea what it is. It really adds to the game.
I didn't even knew it existed until mobile version got updated to be on par with pc. But I really liked it, it's so in character of animatronics and actually makes me safer.
In the files it calls it a pirate song

Anyone else ever notice how much Freddy's laughter sounds like crying
Well crying _is_ just laughing in minor key
I don't know why reading this made me extremely sad.
I laugh outside and cry inside
@TMRapp No, it's actually Scott's son, who he recorded the laugh of and pitched and slowed it down. You can find it in the interview he did with Dawko. (I believe that's the spelling.)
Scott's children playtest every one of his games, and lend themselves for some sound effects, as well as Scott himself (Phone Guy, namely).
Especially the first one he played where he gasps in the middle
I never realized that Freddy’s laugh sounds a little like distorted crying too. Which can tie into a lotta theories and stuff.
I didn’t realise his laughs actually signalled something other than he’d left the stage. Like I didn’t realise with each laugh he gets closer.
His "Laughs" have little hics like a crying child would
@Mamta Singh Michael didn't die though? So he wouldn't be able to possess Golden Freddy
@@agaytoaster I think he or she is talking about the crying child (Chris Afton).
Actually most of the sounds the animatronics make can be interpreted as the the children suffering. Bonnie and Chica's moans could be Jeremy and Susie in pain, Freddy's and Golden Freddy's laugh could be Gabriel, Cassidy and Evan crying, besides we know from the original movie scene that the jumpscare sound was taken from that it is a scream of a child, so that makes it a lot more disturbing
The aesthetic (lack of color) of this channel makes me think we’re seeing through the eyes of someone who can’t see so they use sounds to “paint” the world. I really love it
That ominous droning sound reminds me of some of Minecraft's cave noises.. **Shudders** Those things gave me the creeps when I was a little kid. So much so that I was _terrified_ of going into those caves, so I basically couldn't play Minecraft in its entirety until I got older and braver. Lmao.
My personal least favorite (the one I'm most scared by) from all these sounds is definitely the labored breathing. It really hammers home the point of these animatronics being possessed and likely in some form of horrible, unimaginable suffering. 😣
Fun fact: Apparently according to a reply to another comment that also brought up Minecraft's creepy ambience, there's actually a set time it occurs. By hitting F3 to open that special menu, you'll find a meter labeled "mood" that gradually increases based on if you're underwater, somewhere really dark, in another dimension, and so on. And once it hits 100% the ambience will play.
Also the fun part about cave sounds is that they don’t just occur in the dark or underground, you can get them perfectly safe in a nice bright field above ground
To this day, I will not go mining in minecraft caves. I will, however, go into actual caves, and mines, for fun.... weird how things work out. The game is scarier than real life, which is actually the opposite of scary!
@@wyster14 *when you accidentally build your house on top of a minecraft cave and get cave noises* anyway, actual caves don't make sounds (if they do then you should probably get out of there pretty fast lol) and are actually very fun and pretty to explore in real life. The Minecraft cave noises will forever haunt me

Freddy laughs when he moves to another room. His last stop before your office is the bottom right corner of the map. He doesn’t go into the camera blind spot on that side like Chica.
If your door is open, Freddy is in that corner and you hear his laugh, then yes, you are already dead, and you can expect Freddy to suddenly be in your face a few seconds later.
@yeah up yours too buddy
I don’t remember the camera numbers, but if that’s the bottom-right camera, then yes. Just like all the animatronics, if you look at Freddy in the camera, he’ll be frozen in place for a bit. The amount of time he’s stuck for is dependent on what difficulty he’s set to.
A big part of winning 4/20 mode is doing a loop of closing both doors, looking at Freddy, looking at Foxy, open both doors, repeat. It’s still really tough because the strat is mostly based on Freddy taking his time when the power runs out, which he is much less likely to do on 20 difficulty.
@yeah up yours too buddy
It is fun every now and then. Glad you enjoyed it!
One thing I didn’t hear you mention in this is that what makes the atmosphere wayyy creepier in Freddy’s jumpscare after you run out of power is that after he does his little jingle you sometimes hear footsteps as if he’s walking right up to you and getting ready to scare you at any moment but you can’t tell for the life of you when he’s gonna do it.
This is my favourite FNaF essay video I've ever seen. It's so well-made, and puts in the spotlight how beautifully crafted the original atmosphere of the series was.
I used to work night shifts at an Ikea, and Scott managed to nail the atmosphere a retail space has after closing hours. It's not even exaggerated all that much, large buildings just naturally make creepy noises and are full of scary silhouettes after nightfall.
Good to know! That's pretty cool actually
what Ikea? In Sweden?
Were there faceless employees with distorted physical features mauling you while saying “the store is now closed, please exit the building”?

@@s66s46 Why would you add if it is in Sweden if you had no info on it? also learn to use google (I know this was a joke you are simply not permitted to humor since you failed your test w/ this joke)
I just learned that freddy’s laugh is when he is moving, that means in 20/20/20/20 mode he is literally sprinting all over the place
with all that weight, it's possible for the whole building to fall
thats exactly whats happening, actually. the 0-20 aggression system is basically a chance out of 20 for the animatronic to move when it gets a chance. at level 20, they move literally every time they get a chance, because the chance is 20 out of 20. so in 20/20/20/20 mode every character is moving every few seconds

You know the silence is stressful when even when scruffy literally says "i'm not going to play a jumpscare right now" you straight up don't trust him (at least i didn't, sorry)
Edit: Scruffy, may your woes be few and your days many

I love the visual of Scott beating the love of God out of his kitchen and then recording him at 3 am getting the c h e e s e, mixing the audio and slamming it into the game
Yea my dude is beating the fuck out of his kitchen
It's probably a stock sound effect like the others

@@Trainer67 you good man?
The first FNAF came out when I was 13 and I was really into the series until the 4th one. That was around the time I started thinking that the whole series was "cringe" and for kids and stopped paying attention to it.
Now at 21 I've started to appreciate these games and how they were designed again (at least the first few games).
I love the detail whenever the phone is on screen the 1,9,8,7 keys are all slightly worn. Nice.
Can we all just appreciate how he didn’t jump scare us once, unlike a lot of other fnaf videos?
@@lincolnehret That’s not... a jump scare lol
@@lincolnehret Well yeah, but he warned us.
Thank god for this man appreciate it
Game Theory also does it, and I fucking hate it.
LIKE I'M TRYING TO LISTEN TO YOUR THEORETICAL SPEECH ABOUT FNAF'S LORE AND BACKSTORY AND WHY YOU GOTTA HIT ME WITH THE PUPPET JUMPSCARE?! I GET YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT WHO IS THE PUPPET AND WHO IS HE POSSESSED BY, A CHILD VICTIM, A FAMILY MEMBER OF THE PURPLE GUY OR SOMETHING BCJNFJFJF, BUT DON'T HIT ME WITH THAT
He jumpscared us once but warned us before so yeah

5:08 Not sure who else picked up on this, but when Bonnie fades out, his eyes are the same as they are in the Backstage cam, it's brief, 11 frames, but it's a nice touch (for those who don't know, the < and > keys are frame by frame when paused)
11:44 low key sounds like bonnie is saying "open the door, please" on loop and its terrifying
Unpopular opinion: Say what you want about fnaf, the first game was a cultural reset on horror games
True
thats a rather popular opinion
That's not an unpopular opinion that's the thing I most hear in fans and non-fans FNaF videos lol
I love the first game, all of the games are brilliant and the lore is amazing it’s just a big chunk of the fandom gives the games a bad rep
What they said ^
I personally think this one is the best in the series from a purely horror standpoint. It does so much to build the atmosphere, more than what just adding more animatronics can do. I miss the hallucinations, the rare environmental changes, the justified audial indicators of them being close rather than some high repeating tone...
holy shit i never realised just how clever the sound design was for FNAF
Glad to see that 1000 people agree

5:17 The origin of that sound has been found. It comes from the movie The Woman in Black (2012) at about 1:01:40. The little sounds at the end is footsteps, because someone in the movie is running.
“I’m not going to play a jumpscare here.”
May you have a pleasant evening
The warning and countdown for the jumpscare noise, oh hell yeah. When I heard him say "I'm not going to play a jumpscare here" it felt so safe and reassuring. May his pillow always be cool, headphones never catch on doorhandles, phone charger be long enough for him to roll over, and sleep always be restful

that would be a amazing blessing

I was looking for someone to mention this
While I'm happy you don't have to worry, I'm sad he didn't animate more of the jumpscares in the video, because his animating of Bonnie's was awesome.
@@apaterson147 not to be that guy buuuuut..

9:34 Actually it does. Foxy only sings when he’s farthest away from the office, letting the player know that they have quite some time before he runs down the hall.
that doesn't help you at all though. you still need to constantly look at him or you'll die, so the audio cue is useless and doesn't allow the player to do anything differently or better. the sound also doesn't play regularly enough to rely on it for that.
Timo B Another thing that I feel the need to point out is that you don't need to look right at foxy to keep him in place, you just need to have the cameras active. Tech Rules did a video where he broke down the animatronic AI in the game, and this was one of the things he found.
@@andrewlucia865 yup, same with freddy. that still means you have to look at the camera anyway, it's not really saving you any power to know if foxy is far away from you
I always thought that was Freddy singing. I'm glad I know now
The audio give me ptsd
almost 2 years have passed, this video is still holding up to its value
I think the sting when you catch them in the doorway is ambiguous re: whether it's diagetic or non-diagetic. Yes, the base sound file seems to be a string sting... _but_ with the processing it's been put through, it ends up sounding like a mechanical groan.
Also, the Freddy Laugh sound clue (in addition to still spooking you even after you know how it works) is a double-edged sword or maybe even an outright trap. Yes, it tells you about his position without checking the cameras... but focusing the camera on him is the best way to stall his approach. So having that audio cue can actually lead you astray.
"Don't worry, I'm not gonna play a jumpscare here."
Me: "I DON'T TRUST YOU I DON'T TRUST YOU I DON'T TRUST YOU I DON'T TRUST YOU I DON'T TRUST YOU... Wait... Oh you actually didn't..."
That was somehow more stressful than actually playing the jumpscare lol.
This video is almost as scary as the game because he tries to make it not scary
Fun fact: The reason it was more scary too not have a jump scare was because a jump scare gives you a sense of relief. Like, its finally over. But when there is not one even long after he starts talking the scariness still stays because your waiting for a jumpscare.
FR tho! its because so many other youtubers making FNAF videos always play a jumpscare at a random time or they use a fake countdown but its nice to know that hes telling the truth
And it proves his point even further, love it
Even after reading your comment I still didn’t believe it 😂

I'm pretty sure the buzzing mentioned at 6:33 is actually the florescent light boosted a bit to be distracting since the buzz made by those lights is a generally eerie sound
7:45 that swirling sound is when chica or bonnie change locations
Actually it plays whenever either Bonnie or Chica are in the hallway and come closer to you. This can be confirmed by the name of the folder for this soundfile, wich is called "Danger" After all you can hear the swirling sound even without the cam's, like if the game tries to warn the player that they are close and you should keep an eye out for them.
You missed when the power goes out and Freddy is done with his song, you can hear his footsteps approach you in the darkness
And to correct his information a bit,if you do play dead you actually last longer before Freddy kills you so it's not that useless to play dead.
@@xxsegaxx you actually don't. This has been proven to be false by people that have dug through the game's code. It's basically placebo. Phone dude suggests that you should try playing dead if caught, so the next time power goes out you stop moving, and with this lack of motion time seems to be drawn out and you are left on the edge od your seat just hoping it'll hit 6 before you die, so it just seems like you live longer. In reality, it is completely random.
The time it takes for Freddy to kill you is completely random chance. Not influenced by that.
A lot more things are chance then you'd think.
Then does that mean the opposite is true?like I remember moving a lot of times and he kills me faster so...the amount is random but if you move does that moment last less?
If anyone is scared of jumpscares, he’ll warn you before playing them.
You’re a lifesaver, thank you :)
