This video's gotten a bit of information wrong. For instance, the animatronic scream in FNAF 1 is not a recording of a child screaming, it's a sound clip of a woman's scream from an 80's sci-fi horror film called _Inseminoid_ (1981). Apologies for that!
@@gruccinishikino12 Yeah. They mislead you and make you relax so jumpscare catches you off-guard. And since you know there are trolls who do like that, you expect a jumpscare all the time. Agreed. I'm completely unfazed by the jumpscares, but that sound is so... RAW. And once you learn about exactly why they make that sound at all, it becomes even worse. They're just kids, man... they didn't deserve this.
9:34 Actually it does. Foxy only sings when he’s farthest away from the office, letting the player know that they have quite some time before he runs down the hall.
that doesn't help you at all though. you still need to constantly look at him or you'll die, so the audio cue is useless and doesn't allow the player to do anything differently or better. the sound also doesn't play regularly enough to rely on it for that.
Timo B Another thing that I feel the need to point out is that you don't need to look right at foxy to keep him in place, you just need to have the cameras active. Tech Rules did a video where he broke down the animatronic AI in the game, and this was one of the things he found.
@@andrewlucia865 yup, same with freddy. that still means you have to look at the camera anyway, it's not really saving you any power to know if foxy is far away from you
13:24 HONESTLY THE MOST HORRIFYING SOUND EFFECT IN THE GAME. the labored breathing makes you aware that they are not only right in front of you, but also somewhat alive. the breathing sounds so painful and its so scary 10000/10 horror
This made me thinking: These animatronics are possessed by children, so something that you know... lived. Is this their poor attempt to go after their habits by nature trying to breath... without any sort of lungs? Just by analysing this is giving me shivers down my spine which once again shows how perfect this horror game is.
Why haven't I ever heard that in the game then? I've played it on the Switch, and I've also watched other people play it, and I've yet to hear that sound in the fame even once!
@yeah up yours too buddy Freddy laughs when he moves to another room. His last stop before your office is the bottom right corner of the map. He doesn’t go into the camera blind spot on that side like Chica. If your door is open, Freddy is in that corner and you hear his laugh, then yes, you are already dead, and you can expect Freddy to suddenly be in your face a few seconds later.
@yeah up yours too buddy I don’t remember the camera numbers, but if that’s the bottom-right camera, then yes. Just like all the animatronics, if you look at Freddy in the camera, he’ll be frozen in place for a bit. The amount of time he’s stuck for is dependent on what difficulty he’s set to. A big part of winning 4/20 mode is doing a loop of closing both doors, looking at Freddy, looking at Foxy, open both doors, repeat. It’s still really tough because the strat is mostly based on Freddy taking his time when the power runs out, which he is much less likely to do on 20 difficulty.
16:07 So theres this theory that I find quite interesting. The theory is that when the pizzeria was open and the power were to go out, Freddy would start playing his song and lighting up his eyes to attempt to calm down distressed children. Since his song seems to be in a music-box-lullaby-style, this would make a lot of sense.
I think that sort of design idea exists a fair amount in the series. iirc the Toy-series animatronics attack you because they’re programmed to protect children & the Glamrocks (at least Freddy & Chica) are designed to actively aid lost or stressed children until their parents or guardians can find them. In both cases you’re just sufficiently unfortunate that they’re instead trying to kill you.
@@ak4pro689 facial recognition so they can tell the difference between children/friendly adults & William. Only issue there is that the player character is Michael so they try to kill him
thats exactly whats happening, actually. the 0-20 aggression system is basically a chance out of 20 for the animatronic to move when it gets a chance. at level 20, they move literally every time they get a chance, because the chance is 20 out of 20. so in 20/20/20/20 mode every character is moving every few seconds
Actually waiting for a jumpscare to happen while not knowing the exact moment when it will happen nor having controll over it is actually scarier than receiving the jumpscare: the jumpscare actually ends everything while not receiving it lets you in constant stress and anxiety
14:23 If Bonnie or Chica get in the office, they'll force the camera down and kill you. If Freddy gets in the office, he will only kill you when the camera is down. So, if you know that Freddy is the one in the office - and it's close to 6 am - you can hide in the camera until the night ends, assuming you have enough power left to do so.
“Out of every any animatronic i made i think Bonny is the scariest.” -Scott Cawthon in the Making of the game, and Me who just thought i should say that
I read that Ben Burtt, the sound designer for Star Wars, once hung a microphone over his sleeping wife's mouth to capture her snores. Get material where you can!
16:42 a small detail that didn’t get mentioned is that right after you reach that point of total silence and total darkness, you can very faintly hear muffled footsteps in the blackness. This ramps up the stress and anxiety to the top as the player knows what’s coming. They can hear it coming, but have no way of telling when it’s going to happen. The very monsters you’ve been warding off are *right there* but you are powerless to defend yourself
Actually most of the sounds the animatronics make can be interpreted as the the children suffering. Bonnie and Chica's moans could be Jeremy and Susie in pain, Freddy's and Golden Freddy's laugh could be Gabriel, Cassidy and Evan crying, besides we know from the original movie scene that the jumpscare sound was taken from that it is a scream of a child, so that makes it a lot more disturbing

I recommend looking into it if you have the time, you may find yourself having a newfound appreciation for the game.
I used to work night shifts at an Ikea, and Scott managed to nail the atmosphere a retail space has after closing hours. It's not even exaggerated all that much, large buildings just naturally make creepy noises and are full of scary silhouettes after nightfall.

okay, the swirly sound is actually somewhat advantageous. It's programmed to play every now and then once an animatronic comes too close for comfort. As in, somewhere right outside your office. It gives you the information that you are in immediate danger.
In addition, I'm pretty sure the more subtle, "darker" audio that he shows just after plays after one of the animatronics leaves the stage, or whenever their "aggressiveness level" gets above 0. I can't remember which.
@@heheheiamderpmatter375 Afaik, the weird swirling noise actually plays when the animatronics move in general, and the other one plays when they're super close. Reminds me of the "something lurking" noise from Fnaf 3, that sound sends terror down my spine.
Also, Foxy only sings his song in his first phase. If you are taking too much care of Freddy and cant/don't check Foxy, you can tell if you have a lot of time if you haven't heard his song in a long time

The “swirl” noise, is actually an indicator that the animatronics have gone in the hallway at least once. So it’s kind of like a one-time motion sensor.
@@Charcoal0511 I built FNAF 1 in minecraft, and the cave sounds are really creepy, even more when mixed with FNAF. And they play inside the building, that is ABOVE the surface. I have no explanation to it
@TMRapp No, it's actually Scott's son, who he recorded the laugh of and pitched and slowed it down. You can find it in the interview he did with Dawko. (I believe that's the spelling.) Scott's children playtest every one of his games, and lend themselves for some sound effects, as well as Scott himself (Phone Guy, namely).
Personally, I think the circus song is the scariest part of the fnaf 1. It's incredibly loud and makes you feel like something is coming to get you. It can genuinely make you jump every time it happens
When fnaf first came out, I played it straight for 4 days to beat it. I was getting Bonnie nightmares. Hearing the sound when it appears at the doorway and walking into my bedroom whilst I was sleeping. Then hearing the raspy breathing. It was stuff like this which is why fnaf 1 is so scary to me.

You’ve forgotten one crucial audio clip, one that ramps up tension even further after the total blackout of the 3rd phase. Footsteps. Sometimes you’ll hear Freddy slowly walking towards you before he kills you, stressing you out even further because of the suspense. That there makes things even more horrifying.
you can't SEE him, but you can HEAR him. even when you know he must be just inches away from you. the darkness is horrifying because it's unwilling to let you see what demise awaits you.
Thats actually a very good point. Footsteps are, at least some games, giveaways that someone is around. It's scary in this context because well.... you know.
*yes* , I hate this so much. It’s the main reason I try to avoid the blackout, not cause of the jumpscare but because I hate the “psychological horror” part of it because you don’t know where he is and when he decides enough is enough and kills you.
The aesthetic (lack of color) of this channel makes me think we’re seeing through the eyes of someone who can’t see so they use sounds to “paint” the world. I really love it
his voice, the way everything is drawn in black and white, the editing (especially the part where he switched from a normal voice over to the phone), makes this video so much better than it needed to be. Almost reminiscent of the twilight zone, but just a little more chill. Props to you man!
Friendly tip to you all: if you find that Foxy has left Pirate's Cove, DO NOT view the West Hall camera. Shut the left door first and then check the West Hall camera. It will prevent his "run" down the hallway.
You've forgotten to mention that they have 25 seconds to close the door or else Foxy will start running anyways, so it is impossible for you to just not view West Hall to stop Foxy's death run
@@an-animal-lover you have 25 seconds to close the door if you don't check the cams. The only prevention is the door, not checking the cams is the delay. You can survive Foxy's run, you just need to be quick about it.

technically a lot of these sound effects weren't made by him I believe, they were just stock sound effects. he did get a composer after a while though (who did a fantastic job) and I'm pretty sure the sound effects are original now.
One of the creepiest sounds in this game (or entire series) is Freddy's 'laugh'. It's so disturbing because it sounds more like a sob. The more I think about how it's the child inside who's crying for help the more sad and scared I feel.
This is why in my personal cannon, i like to see this game as it's own thing, it's way more disturbing when you have almost no knowledge of why/what/where/how it's happening
I have to admit, five nights at Freddy’s 1 is terrifying. The audio makes it so much scarier. I played night 1-3 without audio not realising you needed audio cues, and when I started playing with audio, it got so much scarier. I am a little wimp when it comes to playing the games.
I love the visual of Scott beating the love of God out of his kitchen and then recording him at 3 am getting the c h e e s e, mixing the audio and slamming it into the game
It’s crazy how with such little money, Scott was able to create a worldwide popular series that went on for years and is still going. That just shows you can do anything with nothing.
@@pikmp23 the game design of the franchise was at it's peak in the first entry, I really don't think it's a coincidence the game was massively popular. The luck was in the youtube exposure he got, which he would've inevitably got anyway. Horror youtube was also at it's peak back then
Five Nights at Freddy's might have had janky mechanics at times, and a weird complex story, but god damn the atmosphere and audio made up for it big time
I remember when the first fnaf game came out and it was just so simple, no lore whatsoever. Just creepy and fun gameplay. Now its just so complicated.😢
I’ve heard I theory on why Freddy had his song. It was that if the power went out in the Pizzeria he would play the song to help the children not freak out. It makes sense to me
Okay nobody is talking about how everywhere in this video any eyes that show up on screen look at you, or how when a picture fades the eyes fade last or they also turn to look at you while fading. THAT is so subtle a detail and it's impressive.
5:17 The origin of that sound has been found. It comes from the movie The Woman in Black (2012) at about 1:01:40. The little sounds at the end is footsteps, because someone in the movie is running.
One of my favourite audio clips from the game is foxy’s “singing” in FNAF 1. That little “dum dum diddley dum dum” is really creepy, and when you first play through you have no idea what it is. It really adds to the game.
Yeah, some of the random and even not so random sounds you hear really unnerve you, since it seems there is a lot going on outside the office but you don't know what or how close-
I'm a bit late to this video but I love how he added tiny scary details to immerse us further. Like how Bonnie looks at us(breaking the 4th wall) at 13:39 or how he does a itty bitty jumpscare at 5:32 with the eyes in the violin. THAT is great story-telling, little details like that go a looog way(at least for me).
Scruffy's dedication to his craft never ceases to amaze. Stuff like rotoscoping moments of the game, and the visual aids (in particular, I loved the information being obscured behind the fan). I got spooked just watching this, dredging up old memories of horror.
Game Theory also does it, and I fucking hate it. LIKE I'M TRYING TO LISTEN TO YOUR THEORETICAL SPEECH ABOUT FNAF'S LORE AND BACKSTORY AND WHY YOU GOTTA HIT ME WITH THE PUPPET JUMPSCARE?! 7:39 fun fact: the swirling noise actually plays when an animatronic is close, this ultimately can be used as a trump card to an expeirienced player. As this gives both valuable info and power efficiency at the cost of mild inaccuracy and slow reaction times in some cases.
@@xxsegaxx you actually don't. This has been proven to be false by people that have dug through the game's code. It's basically placebo. Phone dude suggests that you should try playing dead if caught, so the next time power goes out you stop moving, and with this lack of motion time seems to be drawn out and you are left on the edge od your seat just hoping it'll hit 6 before you die, so it just seems like you live longer. In reality, it is completely random.
Then does that mean the opposite is true?like I remember moving a lot of times and he kills me faster so...the amount is random but if you move does that moment last less?
5:08 Not sure who else picked up on this, but when Bonnie fades out, his eyes are the same as they are in the Backstage cam, it's brief, 11 frames, but it's a nice touch (for those who don't know, the < and > keys are frame by frame when paused)
7:37 The audio is triggered when the animatronics are moving closer to you as signified by the file name for it as "danger.ogg", basically there to warn you that someone is *closer* but dosent help identify how *close* they are to you.
@@oSHIshnagy or when foxy is ready to make a break for the office (which is annoying when he stays that way because it prevents you from knowing if bonnie and chica are close)
Basically when an animatronic is close to the office, it happens in every game apart from pizza sim (yes including fnaf 4, the ambience gets quieter when Bonnie or Chica are at their door or foxy is in his last stage)
The "swirling sound" that is put under red herrings does actually signify something. That is the "danger ambience", which will only play when an animatronic is close to you. This type of sound is in many of the fnaf games, but is most obvious in fnaf 2
Yes, I played FNAF 2 on xbox, and I'm pretty sure the only way I was able to get through nights 4 and 5 was because of that ambience warning me of something in either main hall or vents, usually main hall
The progression of the series is just the most surreal, terrifying, disturbing thing. The slow descension into pure insanity with each game coming out is what really gets me.
I must say, I thank you deeply for giving legitimate warnings as to when the jumpscare sound will play. I have seen and heard so many dumb "3, 2, haha just kidding I played it at 2 that's so funny" and it's refreshing to see someone who gives a real countdown.

@@JohnSmith-kc6ov I was expecting the "I'm not gonna play a jumpscare here" part to get suddenly cut off by the familiar cry, but it wasn't. Quite surprising to me.
There's actually another example of advantageous audio, in the form Bonnie's and Chica's footsteps. When they initially step off of the Main Stage, they do not make a sound, but after that, every time either one moves, you can hear a footstep sound, and depending on how loud it is, you can tell how close they are to you.
Audio is such a MASSIVE atmosphere setting tool that’s so often easily overlooked, pauses of quite moments, loud effects like the jump scares , dying children, down to simple background effects such as a air conditioner or fan. They are really a make or break tool that people overlook and underate way to often
Can we also talk about how absolutely STRESS INDUCING it is when, during endgame when the power goes out, the only audio information you are given other than Freddy’s song Is his *footsteps* As he slowly walks to your door, then into your office For me, honestly, that’s when my heart-rate skyrockets the MOST
The creepy ambiance of red herrings gives me the chills, you feel the emptiness through the halls outside the office with slight underlying feeling of something twisted and gruesome going on within the pizzeria.
I just wonder how Scott came up with all of this alone. It’s hard to design functional concepts without prior knowledge in psychology. You have to know what gets people’s gears spinning. This game was far ahead of its time.
I guess he had some experience doing games like this before. FNaF wasn't his first game, let alone his first franchise. He's done plenty of other games in Clickteam such as- which I'm playing through lately- The Desolate Hope. It's actually free on Steam if you're curious. I believe it's the only non-FNaF game under Scott's publishing name that is on Steam.
I would assume he talked to other game devs he knows personally, and asked people in his life for feedback. Maybe some of the people he previously worked with had an interest in horror. They could've given advice on how to create a solid horror atmosphere.
he did say in the Dawko interview that, while working on the game, he would let his kids test the mechanics so i guess that adds up to it. He knows how to scare someone
"Having some non-zero sound ambience actually makes an environment calmer than one with total silence." Straight facts. The library at my school is dead quite, so if I were to try to study there, I'd be anxious about not making the slightest noise that would interrupt the silence.
Funny, that kind of ties into the next FNAF-related video he made. Specifically the Pizzeria Simulator section, "food tastes better when you're hungry." Which means sounds you cause yourself feel louder than sounds you don't- especially in situations with a lack of sound and/or when you have to focus. So kind of like when you sneak into the kitchen to grab a midnight snack while your family is asleep, and every little creak of the floorboard and opening the cabinet sounds SO MUCH LOUDER than had you done it around noon because of having to focus on staying quiet.
@@aquaticchaos1717 fnaf 4 was the section on how sounds feel louder in a quiet environment, pizza sim was how things feel louder and more worrying when you make the sound, but your point still stands.
It's almost scarier when you show things in black and white. I'm not scared of fnaf so much anymore, but it does help that the characters are a friendly purple and yellow

I don’t remember the camera numbers, but if that’s the bottom-right camera, then yes.

Yeah, that's actually a good theory. Because why else would he have that function installed?
I think that sort of design idea exists a fair amount in the series. iirc the Toy-series animatronics attack you because they’re programmed to protect children & the Glamrocks (at least Freddy & Chica) are designed to actively aid lost or stressed children until their parents or guardians can find them. In both cases you’re just sufficiently unfortunate that they’re instead trying to kill you.

with all that weight, it's possible for the whole building to fall
thats exactly whats happening, actually. the 0-20 aggression system is basically a chance out of 20 for the animatronic to move when it gets a chance. at level 20, they move literally every time they get a chance, because the chance is 20 out of 20. so in 20/20/20/20 mode every character is moving every few seconds

One of my favourite audio clips from the game is foxy’s “singing” in FNAF 1. That little “dum dum diddley dum dum” is really creepy, and when you first play through you have no idea what it is. It really adds to the game.
Yeah, some of the random and even not so random sounds you hear really unnerve you, since it seems there is a lot going on outside the office but you don't know what or how close-
what's even creepier about his song is that you can hear him take a breath in the middle of it

He jumpscared us once but warned us before so yeah
I love the detail whenever the phone is on screen the 1,9,8,7 keys are all slightly worn. Nice.
7:39 fun fact: the swirling noise actually plays when an animatronic is close, this ultimately can be used as a trump card to an expeirienced player. As this gives both valuable info and power efficiency at the cost of mild inaccuracy and slow reaction times in some cases.
yo good tip thanks!
those sounds, that sound like something you'd hear on a Submarine or a in a Tunnel. its so scary.
this comment sounds like one of those old fnaf rumors (play dead to avoid freddy, that sort of stuff), but it's actually true!
You missed when the power goes out and Freddy is done with his song, you can hear his footsteps approach you in the darkness
And to correct his information a bit,if you do play dead you actually last longer before Freddy kills you so it's not that useless to play dead.
The time it takes for Freddy to kill you is completely random chance. Not influenced by that.
A lot more things are chance then you'd think.
Then does that mean the opposite is true?like I remember moving a lot of times and he kills me faster so...the amount is random but if you move does that moment last less?
*HEADS UP* to everyone, no jump scares without warnings! I promise.

The audio is triggered when the animatronics are moving closer to you as signified by the file name for it as "danger.ogg", basically there to warn you that someone is *closer* but dosent help identify how *close* they are to you.
More specifically, In the hallway.
@@oSHIshnagy or when foxy is ready to make a break for the office (which is annoying when he stays that way because it prevents you from knowing if bonnie and chica are close)
Basically when an animatronic is close to the office, it happens in every game apart from pizza sim (yes including fnaf 4, the ambience gets quieter when Bonnie or Chica are at their door or foxy is in his last stage)
im pretty sure this audio plays as soon as you begin a night lol
@@juanvazquez5836 you should try the games again and listen for the music, you’ll see what I mean.
The "swirling sound" that is put under red herrings does actually signify something. That is the "danger ambience", which will only play when an animatronic is close to you. This type of sound is in many of the fnaf games, but is most obvious in fnaf 2

Fun fact: The animatronic scream is basically a cutted version of a woman’s scream giving birth to an alien in the film „Inseminoid” from 1981.

There's actually another example of advantageous audio, in the form Bonnie's and Chica's footsteps.
When they initially step off of the Main Stage, they do not make a sound, but after that, every time either one moves, you can hear a footstep sound, and depending on how loud it is, you can tell how close they are to you.

@@aquaticchaos1717 What about Chipper game?
I would assume he talked to other game devs he knows personally, and asked people in his life for feedback. Maybe some of the people he previously worked with had an interest in horror. They could've given advice on how to create a solid horror atmosphere.
There are many great horror sound designs from other games to learn from.
he did say in the Dawko interview that, while working on the game, he would let his kids test the mechanics so i guess that adds up to it. He knows how to scare someone

"Having some non-zero sound ambience actually makes an environment calmer than one with total silence."
Straight facts.
@@aquaticchaos1717 Great explanation
