Tirunelli Temple Wayanad is also known as the "Kashi of the South". It is an ancient temple where Brahma is said to have installed the idol of Vishnu. It is believed that he found the idol from a gooseberry tree locally known as Nelli, hence Tirunelli got its name.

തിരുനെല്ലി ക്ഷേത്രം വയനാടിനെ "തെക്കിൻ്റെ കാശി" എന്നും വിളിക്കുന്നു. ബ്രഹ്മാവ് വിഷ്ണുവിൻ്റെ വിഗ്രഹം സ്ഥാപിച്ചതായി പറയപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു പുരാതന ക്ഷേത്രമാണിത്. പ്രാദേശികമായി നെല്ലി എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു നെല്ലിക്ക മരത്തിൽ നിന്നാണ് അദ്ദേഹം വിഗ്രഹം കണ്ടെത്തിയത്, അതിനാൽ തിരുനെല്ലിക്ക് ആ പേര് ലഭിച്ചുവെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.
