XTool D7 Scan Tool First Try and Mini Review. Graphing Data and Airbag Fault VW Golf Jetta Mk5 TDI

  • My first experiences using the XTool D7 diagnostic scan tool on my car. Graphing of data, actuation tests, basic settings etc. I was not sent this tool to review by the manufacturer. I paid for it out of my hard earned cash. It will hopefully pay for itself over a few years in saved Garage costs, and I can use it to help friends and family out with their cars. Thanks for watching!

    Very informative review of a first time try out of this scanning & diagnostic tool. You kept it brief and to the point rather than a rambling boring video.

      Thanks mate! I used it for the first time in anger the other day on a steering rack fault and it was very helpful 🙂

      @@GrubbyRabbitRepairs yes nice to see what can you do with this xtool d7, can you show how record data and graph, and how playback on the d7 ?

      This is a really good video on graphing, recording and playing back data. I found it after I had made this video. th-cam.com/video/Q6owi50q6sE/w-d-xo.html

    What version of Android does your tool have. I saw the new ones are coming out with android 10. Can you make a video of tablet's Android functionality?

      Hi, it's got Android 10. I will try and make a video on it's Android functionality 🙂

    Is this the 2023 with the ECU program?

      Hi, i bought this in April 2023 so I assume it's a 2023 model. It's updated online so I don't think it matters what year it was made. I downloaded and installed all the available online updates when I made this video. There is an option for ECU Programming in the Special Functions menu. I think it only works on limited cars though. Check on the XTool website or email their support for details of what cars ECU Programming works on. Thanks for your comment 🙂

    Where can you monitor the battery/voltage

    • @GrubbyRabbitRepairs
      @GrubbyRabbitRepairs  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, on my VW Golf you could see voltage at about 9:21 on the video in the engine module live data. With engine off it should read battery voltage, with engine on it will read alternator voltage. More modern cars would probably have more in depth data showing in one of the modules. I know there is a special function for resetting battery monitor after battery replacement for some cars. Within that battery special function menu there would be a live data button with battery specific data if applicable to your car.

    Unless this supports full module coding, it can't even come close to VCDS overall . . . . May well be easier for diag, though.

    • @GrubbyRabbitRepairs
      @GrubbyRabbitRepairs  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, sorry what I said was unfair to VCDS. No, the D7 can only code limited modules on only a couple of makes of car I believe. I really meant the D7 feels much more user friendly for the DIY mechanic who is unlikely to need to do module programming. For advanced stuff like programming then VCDS for VAG cars would be far superior. Although I have recently used my D7 to program a new key remote and immobiliser chip for a Toyota so was very pleased with that! Thanks very much for your comment 🙂

    "Slapping the dashboard".. Schrodingers Box would call that 'the percussion test'' (we used unknowingly to perform the percussion test in early days of B&W tele!)

    You say it "recognised the car" but then you had to choose "a variant"! I thought it would read the VIN and really be able to recognise the car.
    Will continue watching.
    Have watched several OTT reviews that show esoteric functions that are of no interest. I'm looking for something that will solve a real-life common problem-- in my case why my car won't start. My cheapo reader shows no codes even when I removed the rail and all 4 plugs. Have spent time and money changing fuel filter and pump without being 100% certain they were at fault so want to stop that approach.
    This could help my decision. Thanks.

      Hi, it recognises make and model and engine type, you just have to sometimes fine tune by selecting body shape, auto/manual etc. No hassle really. But the live data and graphing could definitely help you find your non starting issue. It will read lots of data like fuel rail pressure, cam and crank sensor readings, signal to starter relay etc that would prevent starting. It also reads all modules whereas your cheap one will probably only read engine codes. That may help you if it's maybe an imobiliser or something else that has a separate module. I'm just a DIYer but have already found it very helpful when replacing steering rack and resetting steering angle sensor, turning off oil service lights, helping friend try to diagnose rough running etc.
      What are your symptoms?

      @@GrubbyRabbitRepairs Thanks for thoughtful, useful reply.
      Well the saga started off with good starting, some seconds running, then cutting out. Changed fuel filter, pump, air, oil filter, oil pressure switch, spark plugs. No change. One vido suggested disconnecting MAF switch -- lo and behold it run, rough, for over 1/2 minute!! Reconnected switch, cut out. All warning lights went out!
      Next, cleaned throttle body which was DISGUSTINGLY dirty. Everyone says idle will shoot up initially. Made no difference.
      MAF sensors look clean but auto shop don't sell special cleaner. Pressure tester on fuel rail shows 50psi holding. Still only runs for a few seconds with or without MAF connected. Cheap OBD reader gives no codes. Trying to buy Xtool D7, 4 not available in France, and Amazon won't post it from UK or US because it's a "non-digital item" (???). Phew.

      Sounds frustrating! Can you get isopropyl alcohol or similar from a chemists or something? Rubbing alcohol I think they call it. Or electrical contact cleaner? I'm sure that would clean up your MAF safely with it unplugged. Is it a petrol engine? Could you have an air/vacuum leak too as well as a dodgy MAF? Stuck open evap purge valve or split hose or something. Ive seen vids of home made jam jar smoke machines to check for air leaks. If it runs long enough to see some fuel trim figures and O2 sensor readings on a scan tool that would probably give you a clue. Tricky though if it barely runs at all 😕.

      @@GrubbyRabbitRepairs Thanks you for replying and your suggestions. I do have isoprophyl (?) alcohol but everyone insists it must be the specific (MAF? MAP? I've forgotten) cleaner which my auto shop in France has never even heard of. Anyhoo, today I got delivery of the D7 in 3 days of ordering it from Aliexpress at 365€ all in... so am binge-watching, rewatching all vids on the subject. Something must go right tomorrow...😁😏
      THANK you again.
