VW Golf/Jetta/Rabbit Mk5 Bonnet/Hood Stuck Closed? Alternative method to open!

Here is an alternative method to release a VW Golf Mk5 (and probably Mk6 also) bonnet that is stuck closed. Hope it helps someone!

My bonnet lock assembly turned out to be seized up. It was still stiff after a clean and lube. Until i get another one i have disconnected the cable and attached a tie wrap to the lever instead. To open my bonnet i just turn the VW badge to remove it then pull down on the tie wrap. It works great as a temporary fix 🙂

Had the same stuck bonnet catch problem on my 57 plate MK5 Golf TDi 1.9 Match. One of my mechanic friends popped over to help. He got me to pull the bonnet release lever as he banged on the bonnet, with his fist, in the area near to the bonnet catch mechanism. And Voila! The mechanism released and the bonnet opened. Give this a try before dismantling the VW badge, grill etc.

Thanks! Good tip! Sorry, I didn't mention that in the video. I had already used that method successfully on a few occasions before this happened. Despite using loads of WD40 each time to try to keep it free it eventually seized up. Hope yours stays loose 🙂

Hi, yes I've had 4 VWs because I like them. But I enjoy tinkering with any car really if a friend needs a hand. It's just a hobby.
