- Today we will be taking a quick look at how to get rid of rust on postwar Lionel freight cars! This is extremely easy to do all you need is some evapo rust and a bin with a lid.

Strain the evaporust and re-use it. The name refers to the fact water can be added if it evaporates. While it does have a finite number of reactions (the company site lists this in pounds of metal treated) there is a lot of use left in that tub.

Thanks for sharing. I found the Evapo-rust on Amazon and I'm going to order some. On those wheels, just a drop of light oil where the wheels meet the axles and those will spin like a Hot Wheels car.
Awesome restoration project.
While Evaporust is relatively safe to use, I still wear surgical gloves and safety glasses while working with it. One challenge with finding it is that most retailers that carry it don't keep a lot in stock - I've never seen more than one or two jugs on the shelf. Evaporust also comes in a gel formula for use on small spots or vertical surfaces.

Evaporust is amazing and does remove most paint. Vinegar does the same job on rust and is far cheaper.
I use either Rustoleum or Krylon paint and primer in one. Semi gloss black looks best. Do two or three light coats according to the direction on the can.

If the frames were blackened originally, rather than painted, you can use gun Blueing to re-blacken them.I use Birchwood's "Perma-Blue"

Soak it in white vinegar! With a little light scrubbing from a green scrub pad.

It’s possible that it is not stripping the paint, even though you see bare metal. Rust often begins on surfaces where the paint has already been chipped away… and in bad cases, it can slowly erode the paint surface as it bubbles up from underneath it.
I have done a few tests with Evapo-rust and it has done an excellent job so far.
I love the stuff it works wonders!
I used light gray rustoleum self etching primer helps the paint adhear better
Nice video and yes in the train World a lot of people use the evapor rust I bought some used tubular track a year ago and soak them in the evaporust and then took them out and put them in the oven at 300° for 20 minutes to dry them out and it was a success and just so you know it's pronounced evapa rust like an app on your phone

Don’t dump chemicals into the storm sewer!! Oftentimes the storm sewer is plumbed directly to waterways. If the chemical says it is safe to dispose by dumping, pour it in the toilet so that it goes to the water treatment plant.
I just bought six old tank cars off eBay and three of them have rust, one pretty heavy. Looking forward to restoring them, including decals.

I use purple rust remover if i need to only in extreme conditions
white vinegar removes rust also
Buy yourself some rubber gloves to protect your skin. They are very reasonable from harbor freight and other sources. Great for painting too.
Label says dump back in the container and use it over again.
Why wouldn't you just drop the rusted frame into, percent white vinegar, and let it in the solution for 24 to 48 hours to get rid of the rust, it's a whole lot cheaper price and much easier to find too, and then put the car into a baking soda and water solution to neutralize the acid, and then rinse it off and put the car in the oven at about 200 or so degrees Fahrenheit for about an hour or so to dry the car off, and, VOLA, no more rust on the train car frame!
Many of us labor to add rust to our rolling stock! 😂
If that stuff removes the rust. Think what it does when it soaks in to your skin. In closing. It was nice knowing you.
Although its non toxic....gloves are a good idea.....coca-cola and vinegar also both eat rust and we eat and drink that stuff😬
Use Scalecoat Red oxide Primer.

You need gloves on dude, n it's not water it is a chemical! I just use white vinegar, cheaper, same results. 😊
