Rust (or steel wool) dissolved in vinegar creates iron acetate - which reacts with tannins and oxidises. It can vary from wood to wood how dark it goes depending on the tannin content.
You know what has a load of tannins? Veg tanned leather! If you use it on unfinished veg tanned leather that'll pretty much go black.
@@jackadams8745 true enough, point being the vinegar has another use after it has done it's work on the rust so no need to throw it away
@@ScrewsAndTools no, just brush the wood over with it and it works, does go darker over time and depending on how much iron there is in the rust, but darkens the wood really well

1. Забыл про нагретую Кока-колу, она и как антиржавчина работает и как средства для оксидирования (воронения);
2. После таких операций с плашками надо каждую проверить резьбовой калибр-пробкой (проходной, не проходной), потом нарезать этими плашками резьбу и проверить ее опять же....Очень тонкая работа с резьбонарезного инструмента удалять ржавчину.
Спасибо, интересный формат, собственно идея для ряда роликов хороша раскрывать небольшие секретики и тонкости мастерства, которые уже как бы очевидны, но для других-открытие, спасибо, например сколько я потратил времени и нервов на пайку латуни, не получалось ничего, а оказывается надо то было под длинные швы подкладывать пластинки и все держится, спасибо Вашим видео, мастер!!!

Интересно было бы подсчитать концентрацию кислоты в каждом растворе🤔
И сравнить с концентрацией в жидкости для чистки ванн и унитазов от ржавого налета, например.
Займусь на выходных, это прямо азартный эксперимент.
Привет, могу сказать вот что. Тот обычный раствор который я чаще всего использую, в нем или фосфорная или ортофосфорная кислота, металл не трогает, но если положить алюминий или дюраль жрет быстро. Но уксус самый мягкий - особенно для мелких деталей старого предмета.
@@ScrewsAndTools ортофосфорная кислота- основной ингридиент состава для ванн тоже. Просто я никогда не пыталась растворить ржавчину. Чисто хочу провести химический эксперимент, благо есть тест-полоски и куча ржавого инструмента с заброшки. Будет чем заняться на длинных выходных. Я знаю, что лимонной кислотой темнят инструмент и она создаёт плёнку на поверхности, предохраняющую от ржавчины, но сама никогда не пробовала.

my go-to rust remover is Evaporust, it is a chelating rust remover, works extremely well, and is non-toxic. It's super fast if you heat it up, and the solution can be reused hundreds of times.

Not really the best at that price, there are better alternatives which perform better than evaporust at a fraction of the cost.

Пользуюсь уксусом. Главное, использовать водный раствор, а не концентрат. 70% кислота разъедает сам металл. Самый гуманный вариант - пищевой 9% уксус. Долго (каждые 12 часов стоит проверять состояние детали, а очистка в целом при сильной ржавчине занимает 1 - 2 суток), но эффективно. Уже кучу ржавого инструмента с чердака так оживил.

Interesting. I wonder if you could get better results by using a higher concentration of citric acid (and a higher concentration of soda to neutralise it)?
Hi, maybe yes, but if we have a subject where rust is more than 80-100 years old, it's already difficult there. + it will take a very big waste of time. Although, I use vinegar for small details, especially old items (bayonet knives, scabbards, accessories of scabbard)

What would happen, if you mixed vinegar with citric acid? Vinegar is more acidic, but citric acid forms a complex solution with iron, so they could work better together.

I use oxalic acid. Its labeled as "wood bleach" too. I dont know what it is called in qartulad or where to buy. I order from US.

Привет! Попробуй лучше "Трилон Б". Съедает ржавчину, не затрагивая живой металл. С ним правда сложнее работать, но результат намного лучше. Особенно на деталях, где следует сохранить первоначальный калибр.
You need to heat the citric acid. I boild all my coleman latern parts in citric acid when i restore them.

You just mixed the citric acid too weak.
Since the vinegar was stronger acid it worked better.
If its a single piece metal than use electrolysis. If its multiple metal piece(poor conductivity), like a bike chain, then use diluted vinegar.
I use 9% acidity distilled vinegar.
Just soak it use vinegar + lime and the results more satisfied. For better results soak it 1 days.

Lemon juice IS citric acid.
After vinegar you should clean with a brush in a mixture of baking soda, water, and dish soap. This will clean the rest!

@@ScrewsAndTools I find abrasives remove a lot of extra material, and can be hard to get an even finish. Instead, I'll use a vinegar, baking soda, water and soap, with a plastic brush for light rust. For heavier rusting I'll use a wire brush or if I really need it a "Scotch Brite" pad. This is like a heavy duty green scrubbing pad for pots and pans. It's not quite as destructive as sandpaper, and leaves more of a "brushed" steel finish. The baking soda and soap will stop the chemical reaction from the vinegar which could make more rust. I restore vintage tools as a hobby, and like to use the old fashioned methods, so this is from my experience doing that! We don't get many nice old swords where I live :). Your restorations are beautiful!

Уксус весьма едкая штука и его удаление нейтрализацией не всегда 100% из мелких пор и кратеров а значит продолжение коррозии. Соль и лимон слабо подходит для глубоких окислений, но хороша для тонких слоев на металле и на меди, но там уксус справится лучше. А вот с лимонкой вобще неоднозначная тема. Вроде как 20% расствор хорошо удаляет. Да еще и патинировать можно в горячем расстворе. И меньше взаимодействует с самим металлои, только с его оксидами. Это из курса химии в универе + пару статей по удалению ржавчины разными полручными средствами. 20% расствор это 160грамм на 800мл.

Это то да, но я часто получаю такие вопросы. Вот, поэтому винный по скорости и качеству отличился, хотя у лимонной кислоты тоже свои плюсы есть (ежели на долго)
Лимонная кислота хорошо очищает ржавчины, но нахождение в ней предмета должно составлять не менее суток. К тому же это самый дешёвый способ.
Еще она не плохо справляется с напильниками которые забились, но в том случае если нет актуально средства под рукой.

Try Coca Cola as well, although I suppose it's mostly citric acid...it's great for cleaning up battery terminals at the very least.
Coca-Cola has phosphoric acid. It is used because citric acid would give too much of a sour taste to the product.
Also good for cleaning copper and brass
