So, Paul Reiser told a great story on The Tonight Show back when he was promoting this movie. He told the story about how he took his mother to the premier. Before going into the theater, he was worried she would get upset if she saw him die on screen, so he told her ahead of time about Burke's fate. She told him she'd be fine. During the movie, he could see the tension building in his mom, so he leaned on to remind her that Burke dies. She answers that she's fine. Finally, the scene comes. The alien pops out and Burke is trapped. The entire theater erupts in cheers. He turns to console his mom...only to find she's standing up cheering too.
Reiser was the biggest surprise in this film. Up until this, he was pigeonholed as the comedy guy, so I and a lot of other people were expecting him to be the comic relief of this film. Instead, he plays such a wonderfully hateable scumball that everyone cheers when he dies.
Hudson was the first to see that the vitals for his comrades were still there and proposed they go back in to rescue them. Scared as he was he was honorable and courageous when it mattered most. For all his talk when things went pear-shaped you'd want him fighting next to you.

All of this knowing what happened behind the scenes between James Cameron and the set crew makes this even better. They didn't think he had the directing chops hence why they barely listened to him on set and now Aliens is a scifi classic that's quoted, referenced, and even used by other writers as inspiration for their own works.
Sigourney Weaver was robbed of her Oscar for Aliens because they NEVER give a best actor or actress award for a mega budget action movie....to this day.
Arianna is a perfect reactor. She's talkative so the video isn't just a passive person staring at a screen off-screen but she doesn't talk over important moments or lines so she doesn't miss important details. She's also whip smart & can make really good predictions or insights as the movie is going along. Great video.

As far as Newt's accent, the actress Carrie Henn was born in Panama City, Florida to an American dad and English mom, but moved to England when she was two. So her accent was a strange mixture of southern US and English. It was the only movie she did, actually. Her family moved back to the US and she ended up becoming a schoolteacher and having her own family. She still keeps in touch with Sigourney Weaver.
The smartest thing they did was to not simply make it a carbon copy of the first one. The first one was a creepy horror movie; the second one was a war movie.
The Sarah Connor transformation from the first movie was insane. She was ready for the end of the world and you could see it. Ripley was just mama bear. The parental instincts kick in to protect kids. I like the theatrical better and people sorta cheaping those kinda actions just make me like the theatrical a bit more. They always trying to connect Newt as a replacement kid to the one who died while she was in cryosleep. The old promise with the new promise too. Instead of it all just being a thing people do on the battlefield. Also the ugly investigation vehicle and autoguns aren't as aesthetically pleasing as the rest of the gear as far as sci fi taste go.
Sigourney Weaver's reaction to seeing the Queen Alien for the first time is genuine. She had asked to avoid it until they shot the "reveal" scene so as to maximize the effect. And based upon your reaction, Arianna, it works! The Queen Alien is easily the masterpiece of the great Stan Winston and his "creature shop"!
Ripley using the loader at the end to fight the Queen is iconic- the reveal, the lighting, and top it off with the classic line "get away from her, you BITCH!"... such a great callback to her demonstrating her skills with the loader earlier in the film.
And it was set up at the beginning, at the inquest, when the company revokes her flight officer license, which forces her to get a job at the loading docks. Burke reinforces this at her apartment, when he's a condescending azshole and points out she couldn't get a better job.
You actually know what Burke's fate was because there's a deleted scene (And it's also in the novelization) that during Ripley's search for Newt, she runs into a cocooned Burke saying that he can feel the alien inside, that he was in pain. Ripley pops a hand grenade and puts it in his hands. When Ripley find's Newt's tracker, there's an explosion that indicates that Burke is now dead. TH-cam has the deleted scene.
The scene was cut because it didn't fit. They spend at least several hours in a comma with a facehugger implanting the egg. There wasn't enough time for Burke to be implanted and then wake up again.
Gorman is such a tragic story arc. You really don't like him at all and even get to the point of hating him. However, he redeems himself and shows that deep down inside he probably isn't a bad guy, he just was put in a bad position probably because the corporation knew he'd be easy to manipulate. And that scene with he and Vasquez clutching that charge as hard as they can to make sure they die quickly is powerful. And Vasquez is mad that he came back for her. He did not have to do that and now he will die with her.
The woman playing Vasquez is a good friend of James Cameron. She played John Connor's foster mother in "Terminator 2" and the Irish woman reading the kids a bedtime story when she knew her and the kids would not be saved in "Titanic". Hudson is Bill Paxton...the only actor whose characters have been killed by an Alien (Xenomorph), a Terminator (First film) and a Predator (part 2). Hicks has also been in several James Cameron films, this one, "Terminator" (Kyle Reese) as well as part 2 (Special Edition) and "The Abyss".
I got to meet Hicks, Vasquez, Bishop, and Newt a few years ago. I got Lance Henriksen’s signed autobiography titled, “Not Bad For a Human”. All the cast members were super to meet in person and more than happy to share personal stories.
I agree that the added scenes are good but you loose that reveal of Newt on the planet when the group gets there in the theatrical cut. I think it's better to watch the theatrical cut on a first time viewing and then watch the extended cut later.

Theatrical it's just another thing people do on the battlefield. In the extended cut people always making the connection it's more to do with her lost child which sorta cheapens her actions. The ugly investigation vehicle and autoguns aren't aesthetically pleasing. Then the extras of colonial life, not much lost on the cutting room floor.
@@jbacunn I prefer the extended version, because you then get the scenes with the Sentries, which do an amazing job at giving the marines ''a small win'' but also at the same time ratcheting up the tension. But I do agree that the scenes with Newt and her family should've been scrapped even in the extended cut, because not knowing anything about the colony or the people themselves prior to that first drop was TENSE when watching the theatrical cut.
Both the first movie and this one are master classes in how to ratchet tension and invest your audience in the story. Easily 2 of my favorite movies ever. The series stops here, though, there are no others. No more.....at all.....

Completely agree! I really appreciated how worked up she got during the scene of Ripley's debriefing for the company guys. I've never seen somebody feel so strongly on Ripley's behalf, I don't even think I did my first time. But during this reaction I was more like "YEAH! WHAT THE FUCK THATS BULLSHIT!!" 🤣
They have a real understanding of when to do the commentary and when to stop and listen. Too many reactors really feel they have to talk over the entire movie and they miss a lot of important stuff in the meantime.
When I was younger and dumber, I used to do Bishop's knife trick. Only nicked my fingers a few times. Never stabbed myself. edit - As for Newt's random accent, she's an American, raised in London and DID have a messed up American/British accent. It resolved after she moved back the the US, but as a child she had trouble trying to keep an American accent.
Saw this opening weekend in the theater almost 40 years ago. We were all going nuts! What a ride!! One of the best action movies of the 1980's. Pacing, tension, action, execution.....all top notch from James Cameron.
One of the best action sci-fi movie ever, even nearly 40 years later it hold its own because the practical effects were perfectly filmed. All the characters have something that makes em unique, Carrie Henn in her first and only movie role as Newt was a great character, Hicks sense of duty and leadership, Hudson cockiness/cowardiness, Vasquez being a badass, Gorman redeeming himself, Burke being the perfect representation of a corpo weasel... even the secondary character, I mean, one of my favorite scenes is when they're retreating from the hive, and Drake covers everyone, he essentially 'sacrificed' himself so that the others could live... Ripley ? She isn't badass cause of her brawn, but because of her smarts, her craftiness and her courage, she just finds a way to stay level-headed in front of danger. She should have been a model for the empowerment of women, at least I hope she was for many, cause strength of character should come above pretty much everything, and she's strong as fuck. Love your reactions, you are so genuine it's crazy. Thanks for making me re-live that masterpiece !
This was one of the better movies from the 80's wherein a woman plays a strong leadership part. Ripley never falters in the face of failure. Even Hicks pulling her back up after Newt gets captured is simply an expedient to the realization she was going to make in a moment more. She wasn't second in command of the Nostromo for nothing. You EARN a captain's license by being proficient. You BECOME a captain by making the right decisions and leading your crew in adversity. Weaver was a perfect choice for Alien, and she never let the character itself fail through her own efforts. The writing for -3 might have let us down, but she didn't.
I love that Newt calls Ripley " mommy". That ties in the fact early on Ripley never could honor her promise to her daughter that died before she came back. But Newt loses her family and finds a new mom in Ripley. So they just completed each other so to speak. Just my take...
It has even more of an impact if you see this extended edition that restores the cut scenes about Ripley's daughter. I agree whole-heartedly with you. It's a powerful moment in the film. My other favourite moment with Newt is when Ripley says "Cross my heart." You just KNOW what the second part of that expression is, and it's so significant in their case.
In a deleted scene Ripley runs into burke impregnated with an alien. Burke asks for mercy and Ripley hands him one of the explosives off that belt she throws at the nest. Then he presses it, then later on in one of the scenes you see Ripley and newt and a loud background explosion.
That scene where Newt slides down the shaft because of the grenade going off. The actress playing her, Carrie Henn, found it to be so fun that she purposefully botched the takes so that she could keep doing it over and over.
No she was born American in Florida to an American father and a British mother. She moved to the UK when she was young and then later moved back to the US to be a teacher. So she has a weird mix of American British accent.
Great observation at the end. Every reaction I've watched, when Ripley gets the Queen's head in one of the loader's "hands", they yell "crush her", forgetting the acid blood problem...
Fun fact: The Alien Queen is still considered the biggest movie prop, to this day Folks would say the T-Rex from “Jurassic Park” is bigger but that prop was half real and half CGI The Alien Queen took up an entire room with how big she is.
There was an edit filmed that had Ripley meet her daughter instead of the scene where she's told her daughter was dead, played by Sigourney's real life mother hence the similiarity in appearance, but James Cameron went with the "your daughter is dead" moment because he felt it would set up the Newt relationship better.
Great reaction! And proof that this sequel has lost none of its power to scare, shock, and keep you on the edge of your seat, 36 years after it was first released. This is often my response when asked what my favorite movie is as well, although it depends on my mood. Sometimes it's a Fincher movie (most of his work, and I'll even defend Alien 3 though he hates it), sometimes it's Shane Black (The Nice Guys or Kiss Kiss Bang Bang will do). But more often than not, I'll say this or Terminator 2 are my favorite movies.

Ellen Ripley taught me what a good mother is supposed to look like. And Dwayne Kicks taught me the kind of Marine I wanted to be which positively affected my decisions in Iraq when two others around me needed to be confronted, I didn't hesitate. This film helped shape my morals when I was 12. Won't ever forget it.
I'm glad you reviewed this particular EXTENDED version of Aliens and not the original theatrical version. A lot of times extended editions are kinda tedious, but this is the exception to the rule: the extended footage (like the family discovering the aliens) really helps fill out the story.
I thought it was much better going in cold not knowing what was going on with the colonists. That way you are more immersed in what the marines are experiencing.

Because it wasn't "extended," it was RESTORED. The special edition is the original version, as written, filmed, and intended to be seen. The theatrical was just cut for time, and created plot holes.
This movie is pushing 40 years. Saw it first time in the early 90's and its still in my top 5 sci-fi movies. Arianna is great at reacting. She lives the movie. And feel with the characters.
The cocooning into an egg scene in the first film was only in the alternate 2003 cut, so when Aliens came out, it wasn't known to audiences and wasn't considered canonical (arguably, it still isn't).
In the original movie, the Nostromo was 10 months out, so if we assume that the Sulaco is at least as fast (it's probably faster), then Ripley and the Colonial Marines took at most 10 months to reach LV-426 (now known as Acheron, according to the prequels).
You'll love this one (i had to have it pointed out to me): Vasquez is actor Jenette Goldstein who played Janelle Voight, John Connor's stepmom in TERMINATOR 2.
The actor playing Pvt. Vasquez also played John Connor's foster mother in James Cameron's Terminator 2: Judgment Day, the Irish mother in James Cameron's Titanic, and a bridge officer aboard the Enterprise-B in Star Trek Generations. Bill Paxton (Pvt. Hudson) was one of the punks killed at the beginning of James Cameron's The Terminator, the treasure hunter in Titanic, nasty older brother in Weird Science, and the male lead in Twister. Michael Biehn (Cpl. Hicks) was Kyle Reese in The Terminator & Terminator 2, and a bad guy in James Cameron's The Abyss. Good catch on the guy from The Shawshank Redemption! Another guy from that film was a guard in The Green Mile from the same author an director, and another guard in The Green Mile was in Saving Private Ryan.

One of the best sequels ever. Cameron is such an amazing writer/director. I know he's done some cheesy stuff in his films, but he's a master at pacing, character development, and tension. This has been in my top 10 since it came out, I've probably seen it over 500 times. Lol

You're correct, the actor who played Drake, Mark Rolston, was in The Shawshank Redemption. He also dies in The Departed & Ahsoka. (He's the Republic captain in the opening scene of Ahsoka who called Baylan Skoll & Shin Hati "overconfident Imperial trash" (& not Jedi) before Baylan lightsabers him through the chest.)
There are a couple moments during the final battle where they had to use dolls on a model set instead of practical effects. Now that I've been shown it I can't unsee the moments, but thankfully its quick enough it doesn't take away from the tension.

You watched the extended cut of this movie. What was so good about the theatrical cut is that you really didn't need to see the first one to enjoy this one. When this came out in theaters I went to go see it WITHOUT see Alien. I enjoyed this a lot without needing a ton of backstory. I didn't know who Ripley was or that she had a daughter or why she was in that escape ship from the first movie. I just knew what I needed as the movie progressed.
That "me too", at around 28:50, is what cemented this as THE action film for me. She's scared as Newt is, as the marines are. I've watched action protagonists and I've enjoyed action flicks, but this is the best for me. Hands down, no holds barred, whatever is the idiom, fookin' hell it's a great movie.
I had the pleasure of seeing this in the theater in Horton Plaza in San Diego and I had almost the same reaction when the door opened to reveal Ripley in the power loader, except I think I used a different word before 'yeah.' 😅
Back in the early 90s, only a few years after it’s release, my 10th grade Biology teacher (Mr Crouch) let me write a biological classification report on the xenomorph for extra credit . He thought it was very interesting and asked me where I got the idea for the creature and was surprised to hear that my report came from two movies, comics and novels. My favorite part of this movie is when Ripley is climbing out of the airlock after having blown the queen out into space. That moment is a perfect metaphor for her character arc and a perfect example of what a heroine is. I can’t wait for my sons to see these movies and hear what they get from them.

At the 70th World Science Fiction Convention in 2012, "Get away from her, you bitch!" was voted the most iconic line of dialogue from any science fiction film, narrowly beating out the line that came in second place, "May the Force be with you." Yes, that is Mark Ralston, who played Boggs Diamond in "Shawshank." The man is a sweetheart in person, a truly nice guy (and he has an amazing sense of comedic timing when allowed to play comedy), but he admits that because -- and these are his words -- "I've got a tough guy face" he's made his career playing hard asses of one type or another. As an aside, the picture of Ripley's 66-year old daughter is actually a picture of Elizabeth Inglis, Sigourney Weaver's mother. As another aside, a bunch of math students at CalTech back in 2017 figured out that given we know the precise population of the Hadley's Hope colony, we know how many xenomorphs in total there are. (They started with 158 colonists of all ages; if you subtract the one guy who died when they pried the facehugger off of him, and Newt, that leaves you with 156 total xenomorphs, including the Queen). With carefully tracking how many of the aliens were killed, they estimated that when Ripley went back into the nest, there couldn't have been more than 10 - 15 aliens left, including the queen.
The original theatrical cut of _Alien_ did not include the "cocoon" scene with Dallas, so when people first saw _Aliens_ back in 1986, this was the first they had seen of this kind of thing.
4:22 Here's the thing at this point in the future where humanity goes off exploring the other star systems of the galaxy, we really just don't know what's out there, and for exploration it takes a certain type of person who has an open mind, perhaps open to a fault, and is not afraid to take risks. The hard truth is that people out there are going to die because of some unknown thing they ran into for which we have no way to prepare in advance. They're not going to have someone who's Earthbound watching and saying "Hell no, that doesn't feel right, you shouldn't go in there or open that or whatever else might expose you to some unknown like that!". They have to take the risk, and sometimes that risk is going to be enormous and we won't know it until after the fact. That's how the Nostromo ended up on that planetoid, and that's what drove those wildcatters out there to the Ilium range. Exploration, discovery.
I like that Cameron went with a 10mm ammo in the rifles because at the time of filming this movie (1985) 10mm was an essentially new handgun round that was so powerful that only a few regular shooters could handle it correctly. Even today the 10mm round is powerful enough to go bear hunting with in a handgun.
This is my favorite movie of all time and you demonstrated why. Ty for this. Seeing you go through the roller coaster for the first time took me too, even after watching it for the 100th time I still get goosebumps. Subscribed
There is a great history of the kid that played Nute. She is now a Primary Scholl teacher. She said that the water in the scene where she is in it and the monster rises they had heated and it was too hot so Her and the "monster" sat on the edge with their feet in the water waiting for the filming.
Fun side note, Amanda Ripley her daughter is the protagonist of the game Alien: Isolation where she's searching what happened to her mother after the events of the first movie
Something I notice at 37:22 is that Ripley tells Newt to close her eyes and turns her away from the Queen, only for Newt to see Bishop flying behind them ... which means she didn't close her eyes. It has to be deliberate, though I'm not quite sure why.
There's STILL two pairs of shoes that I want from watching 80's movies, 1. The self tying Nike Air Mags from Back To The Future Part Two and 2. The Reebok Alien Stompers that Ripley wears in this movie!

British Accent" In case anyone else was wondering about this as well, the girl that plays Newt is American, but her family was mostly in England growing up, so when she did this movie, she had a slight British accent and did the best she could to lose it. her parents, or one of them may be English. I don't remember the whole story. The whole "MOSTLY" line is iconic, and was said all the time. The line was parodied on South Park in one of the earlier season 1 or 2 episodes. She lost the accent, and is currently, or at least, last I saw, an Elementary School teacher in America, or England.
Burke is Paul Reisner. At the time he was a somewhat popular comedian on the rise. He later got a sitcom called Mad About You that was a big hit. Hudson is Bill Paxton who just died about a few years ago. Probably the biggest star from this movie. Vazquez is played by the same woman that played the step mom in Terminator two. Surprisingly she is Jewish. The robot dude is the same guy who played the Phycologists in Terminator 1. Hicks, played Reese in Terminator 1 and Johnny Ringo in Tombstone.

She's talkative so the video isn't just a passive person staring at a screen off-screen but she doesn't talk over important moments or lines so she doesn't miss important details. She's also whip smart & can make really good predictions or insights as the movie is going along. Great video.

As far as Newt's accent, the actress Carrie Henn was born in Panama City, Florida to an American dad and English mom, but moved to England when she was two. So her accent was a strange mixture of southern US and English. It was the only movie she did, actually. Her family moved back to the US and she ended up becoming a schoolteacher and having her own family. She still keeps in touch with Sigourney Weaver.
The actor who plays Burke took his mother to a screening. She applauded when his character died 🤣
And then after the movie, she kicked his ass throughout the trip back home.

I like the theatrical better and people sorta cheaping those kinda actions just make me like the theatrical a bit more. They always trying to connect Newt as a replacement kid to the one who died while she was in cryosleep. The old promise with the new promise too. Instead of it all just being a thing people do on the battlefield. Also the ugly investigation vehicle and autoguns aren't as aesthetically pleasing as the rest of the gear as far as sci fi taste go.

Sigourney Weaver's reaction to seeing the Queen Alien for the first time is genuine.
She had asked to avoid it until they shot the "reveal" scene so as to maximize the effect.
And based upon your reaction, Arianna, it works!
The Queen Alien is easily the masterpiece of the great Stan Winston and his "creature shop"!
Ripley using the loader at the end to fight the Queen is iconic- the reveal, the lighting, and top it off with the classic line "get away from her, you BITCH!"... such a great callback to her demonstrating her skills with the loader earlier in the film.
And it was set up at the beginning, at the inquest, when the company revokes her flight officer license, which forces her to get a job at the loading docks. Burke reinforces this at her apartment, when he's a condescending azshole and points out she couldn't get a better job.
You actually know what Burke's fate was because there's a deleted scene (And it's also in the novelization) that during Ripley's search for Newt, she runs into a cocooned Burke saying that he can feel the alien inside, that he was in pain. Ripley pops a hand grenade and puts it in his hands. When Ripley find's Newt's tracker, there's an explosion that indicates that Burke is now dead. TH-cam has the deleted scene.
The scene was cut because it didn't fit. They spend at least several hours in a comma with a facehugger implanting the egg. There wasn't enough time for Burke to be implanted and then wake up again.
Gorman is such a tragic story arc. You really don't like him at all and even get to the point of hating him. However, he redeems himself and shows that deep down inside he probably isn't a bad guy, he just was put in a bad position probably because the corporation knew he'd be easy to manipulate. And that scene with he and Vasquez clutching that charge as hard as they can to make sure they die quickly is powerful. And Vasquez is mad that he came back for her. He did not have to do that and now he will die with her.

The woman playing Vasquez is a good friend of James Cameron. She played John Connor's foster mother in "Terminator 2" and the Irish woman reading the kids a bedtime story when she knew her and the kids would not be saved in "Titanic". Hudson is Bill Paxton...the only actor whose characters have been killed by an Alien (Xenomorph), a Terminator (First film) and a Predator (part 2). Hicks has also been in several James Cameron films, this one, "Terminator" (Kyle Reese) as well as part 2 (Special Edition) and "The Abyss".
I got to meet Hicks, Vasquez, Bishop, and Newt a few years ago. I got Lance Henriksen’s signed autobiography titled, “Not Bad For a Human”. All the cast members were super to meet in person and more than happy to share personal stories.

I agree that the added scenes are good but you loose that reveal of Newt on the planet when the group gets there in the theatrical cut. I think it's better to watch the theatrical cut on a first time viewing and then watch the extended cut later.

@@jbacunn I prefer the extended version, because you then get the scenes with the Sentries, which do an amazing job at giving the marines ''a small win'' but also at the same time ratcheting up the tension.
But I do agree that the scenes with Newt and her family should've been scrapped even in the extended cut, because not knowing anything about the colony or the people themselves prior to that first drop was TENSE when watching the theatrical cut.

Completely agree! I really appreciated how worked up she got during the scene of Ripley's debriefing for the company guys. I've never seen somebody feel so strongly on Ripley's behalf, I don't even think I did my first time. But during this reaction I was more like "YEAH! WHAT THE FUCK THATS BULLSHIT!!" 🤣
They have a real understanding of when to do the commentary and when to stop and listen. Too many reactors really feel they have to talk over the entire movie and they miss a lot of important stuff in the meantime.
When I was younger and dumber, I used to do Bishop's knife trick. Only nicked my fingers a few times. Never stabbed myself.
edit - As for Newt's random accent, she's an American, raised in London and DID have a messed up American/British accent. It resolved after she moved back the the US, but as a child she had trouble trying to keep an American accent.

Saw this opening weekend in the theater almost 40 years ago. We were all going nuts! What a ride!! One of the best action movies of the 1980's. Pacing, tension, action, execution.....all top notch from James Cameron.

One of the best action sci-fi movie ever, even nearly 40 years later it hold its own because the practical effects were perfectly filmed. All the characters have something that makes em unique, Carrie Henn in her first and only movie role as Newt was a great character, Hicks sense of duty and leadership, Hudson cockiness/cowardiness, Vasquez being a badass, Gorman redeeming himself, Burke being the perfect representation of a corpo weasel... even the secondary character, I mean, one of my favorite scenes is when they're retreating from the hive, and Drake covers everyone, he essentially 'sacrificed' himself so that the others could live...
Ripley ? She isn't badass cause of her brawn, but because of her smarts, her craftiness and her courage, she just finds a way to stay level-headed in front of danger. She should have been a model for the empowerment of women, at least I hope she was for many, cause strength of character should come above pretty much everything, and she's strong as fuck.

This was one of the better movies from the 80's wherein a woman plays a strong leadership part. Ripley never falters in the face of failure. Even Hicks pulling her back up after Newt gets captured is simply an expedient to the realization she was going to make in a moment more. She wasn't second in command of the Nostromo for nothing. You EARN a captain's license by being proficient. You BECOME a captain by making the right decisions and leading your crew in adversity.
Weaver was a perfect choice for Alien, and she never let the character itself fail through her own efforts. The writing for -3 might have let us down, but she didn't.
The guy that plays Corporal Hicks "the grunt" 😆 also played Kyle Reese in The Terminator. Bill Paxton was in both as well

I love that Newt calls Ripley " mommy". That ties in the fact early on Ripley never could honor her promise to her daughter that died before she came back. But Newt loses her family and finds a new mom in Ripley. So they just completed each other so to speak. Just my take...
It has even more of an impact if you see this extended edition that restores the cut scenes about Ripley's daughter. I agree whole-heartedly with you. It's a powerful moment in the film.
My other favourite moment with Newt is when Ripley says "Cross my heart." You just KNOW what the second part of that expression is, and it's so significant in their case.
In a deleted scene Ripley runs into burke impregnated with an alien. Burke asks for mercy and Ripley hands him one of the explosives off that belt she throws at the nest. Then he presses it, then later on in one of the scenes you see Ripley and newt and a loud background explosion.
That scene where Newt slides down the shaft because of the grenade going off. The actress playing her, Carrie Henn, found it to be so fun that she purposefully botched the takes so that she could keep doing it over and over.

There was an edit filmed that had Ripley meet her daughter instead of the scene where she's told her daughter was dead, played by Sigourney's real life mother hence the similiarity in appearance, but James Cameron went with the "your daughter is dead" moment because he felt it would set up the Newt relationship better.
Great reaction! And proof that this sequel has lost none of its power to scare, shock, and keep you on the edge of your seat, 36 years after it was first released. This is often my response when asked what my favorite movie is as well, although it depends on my mood. Sometimes it's a Fincher movie (most of his work, and I'll even defend Alien 3 though he hates it), sometimes it's Shane Black (The Nice Guys or Kiss Kiss Bang Bang will do). But more often than not, I'll say this or Terminator 2 are my favorite movies.
Alien 3 does not exist. It's a disgrace and a travesty.

Ellen Ripley taught me what a good mother is supposed to look like. And Dwayne Kicks taught me the kind of Marine I wanted to be which positively affected my decisions in Iraq when two others around me needed to be confronted, I didn't hesitate. This film helped shape my morals when I was 12. Won't ever forget it.
I'm glad you reviewed this particular EXTENDED version of Aliens and not the original theatrical version. A lot of times extended editions are kinda tedious, but this is the exception to the rule: the extended footage (like the family discovering the aliens) really helps fill out the story.
I thought it was much better going in cold not knowing what was going on with the colonists. That way you are more immersed in what the marines are experiencing.

Because it wasn't "extended," it was RESTORED. The special edition is the original version, as written, filmed, and intended to be seen. The theatrical was just cut for time, and created plot holes.

This movie is pushing 40 years. Saw it first time in the early 90's and its still in my top 5 sci-fi movies. Arianna is great at reacting. She lives the movie. And feel with the characters.
The cocooning into an egg scene in the first film was only in the alternate 2003 cut, so when Aliens came out, it wasn't known to audiences and wasn't considered canonical (arguably, it still isn't).

In the original movie, the Nostromo was 10 months out, so if we assume that the Sulaco is at least as fast (it's probably faster), then Ripley and the Colonial Marines took at most 10 months to reach LV-426 (now known as Acheron, according to the prequels).

You're correct, the actor who played Drake, Mark Rolston, was in The Shawshank Redemption. He also dies in The Departed & Ahsoka. (He's the Republic captain in the opening scene of Ahsoka who called Baylan Skoll & Shin Hati "overconfident Imperial trash" (& not Jedi) before Baylan lightsabers him through the chest.)
There are a couple moments during the final battle where they had to use dolls on a model set instead of practical effects. Now that I've been shown it I can't unsee the moments, but thankfully its quick enough it doesn't take away from the tension.

You watched the extended cut of this movie. What was so good about the theatrical cut is that you really didn't need to see the first one to enjoy this one. When this came out in theaters I went to go see it WITHOUT see Alien. I enjoyed this a lot without needing a ton of backstory. I didn't know who Ripley was or that she had a daughter or why she was in that escape ship from the first movie. I just knew what I needed as the movie progressed.
That "me too", at around 28:50, is what cemented this as THE action film for me. She's scared as Newt is, as the marines are.
I've watched action protagonists and I've enjoyed action flicks, but this is the best for me. Hands down, no holds barred, whatever is the idiom, fookin' hell it's a great movie.

I had the pleasure of seeing this in the theater in Horton Plaza in San Diego and I had almost the same reaction when the door opened to reveal Ripley in the power loader, except I think I used a different word before 'yeah.' 😅
Back in the early 90s, only a few years after it’s release, my 10th grade Biology teacher (Mr Crouch) let me write a biological classification report on the xenomorph for extra credit . He thought it was very interesting and asked me where I got the idea for the creature and was surprised to hear that my report came from two movies, comics and novels.
My favorite part of this movie is when Ripley is climbing out of the airlock after having blown the queen out into space. That moment is a perfect metaphor for her character arc and a perfect example of what a heroine is. I can’t wait for my sons to see these movies and hear what they get from them.
Carrie Henn's father was an air force officer stationed in England when she got scouted to play Newt. That's where the accent probably comes from

Yes, that is Mark Ralston, who played Boggs Diamond in "Shawshank." The man is a sweetheart in person, a truly nice guy (and he has an amazing sense of comedic timing when allowed to play comedy), but he admits that because -- and these are his words -- "I've got a tough guy face" he's made his career playing hard asses of one type or another.
As an aside, the picture of Ripley's 66-year old daughter is actually a picture of Elizabeth Inglis, Sigourney Weaver's mother.
As another aside, a bunch of math students at CalTech back in 2017 figured out that given we know the precise population of the Hadley's Hope colony, we know how many xenomorphs in total there are. (They started with 158 colonists of all ages; if you subtract the one guy who died when they pried the facehugger off of him, and Newt, that leaves you with 156 total xenomorphs, including the Queen). With carefully tracking how many of the aliens were killed, they estimated that when Ripley went back into the nest, there couldn't have been more than 10 - 15 aliens left, including the queen.
The original theatrical cut of _Alien_ did not include the "cocoon" scene with Dallas, so when people first saw _Aliens_ back in 1986, this was the first they had seen of this kind of thing.
4:22 Here's the thing at this point in the future where humanity goes off exploring the other star systems of the galaxy, we really just don't know what's out there, and for exploration it takes a certain type of person who has an open mind, perhaps open to a fault, and is not afraid to take risks. The hard truth is that people out there are going to die because of some unknown thing they ran into for which we have no way to prepare in advance. They're not going to have someone who's Earthbound watching and saying "Hell no, that doesn't feel right, you shouldn't go in there or open that or whatever else might expose you to some unknown like that!". That's how the Nostromo ended up on that planetoid, and that's what drove those wildcatters out there to the Ilium range. Exploration, discovery.

I like that Cameron went with a 10mm ammo in the rifles because at the time of filming this movie (1985) 10mm was an essentially new handgun round that was so powerful that only a few regular shooters could handle it correctly. Even today the 10mm round is powerful enough to go bear hunting with in a handgun.

There is a great history of the kid that played Nute. She is now a Primary Scholl teacher. She said that the water in the scene where she is in it and the monster rises they had heated and it was too hot so Her and the "monster" sat on the edge with their feet in the water waiting for the filming.

Something I notice at 37:22 is that Ripley tells Newt to close her eyes and turns her away from the Queen, only for Newt to see Bishop flying behind them ... which means she didn't close her eyes. It has to be deliberate, though I'm not quite sure why.

In case anyone else was wondering about this as well, the girl that plays Newt is American, but her family was mostly in England growing up, so when she did this movie, she had a slight British accent and did the best she could to lose it. her parents, or one of them may be English. I don't remember the whole story. The whole "MOSTLY" line is iconic, and was said all the time. The line was parodied on South Park in one of the earlier season 1 or 2 episodes. She lost the accent, and is currently, or at least, last I saw, an Elementary School teacher in America, or England.
Burke is Paul Reisner. At the time he was a somewhat popular comedian on the rise. He later got a sitcom called Mad About You that was a big hit. Hudson is Bill Paxton who just died about a few years ago. Probably the biggest star from this movie. Vazquez is played by the same woman that played the step mom in Terminator two. Surprisingly she is Jewish. The robot dude is the same guy who played the Phycologists in Terminator 1. Hicks, played Reese in Terminator 1 and Johnny Ringo in Tombstone.
