Predator is a 1987 American science fiction action film directed by John McTiernan and written by brothers Jim and John Thomas. It is the first installment in the Predator franchise. It stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as the leader of an elite paramilitary rescue team on a mission to save hostages in guerrilla-held territory in a Central American rainforest, who encounter the deadly Predator (Kevin Peter Hall), a technologically advanced alien who stalks and hunts them down.

The Predator decides to fight Dutch hand to hand out of respect. The creature has a code of honor. Apparently no man has ever given him as much trouble as Dutch so he felt like he found a worthy adversary.

In the original draft of the story, Dutch was supposed to beat the Predator in the fistfight rather easily. Any other action star at that time would have been happy with that, but surprisingly, Arnold said to the director that it didn't make any sense. "He's a monster, I'm just a man," he said. Arnold proposed this scenario instead.

Billy took off his shirt because he knew he was going to die anyway. He decided to go out like a warrior and a man in face to face, hand to hand combat instead of using technology, and show the Predator he was willing to fight it that way with his knife. He drew his own blood so the enemy couldn't draw first blood on him. The Predator respected Billy for fighting him like that that's why he took his skull and spine as a trophy because the Predator knew he killed a brave opponent. Later the Predator does the same thing...takes off his weapons and mask so he can fight Arnold in a more fair, "man on man" combat.
The Predator was looking at Arnold's skull in that shot not looking at the shape but just trying to understand why this one gave him so much trouble - if there was anything different about him. He couldn't believe he had put up such a fight.

    • @thehitman8248

Fun fact: The predator's iconic clicking sound was done by voice actor Peter Cullen, aka Optimus Prime in Transformers, inspired by the sound of the wriggling legs of an overturned Horseshoe-crab he saw as a kid.
As for the design: it was originally Jean Claude van Damme in a crustacean-like costume, but it translated very poorly to film, so Arnold suggested contacting Stan Winston with whom he had previously collaborated with for the Terminator. Winston drew sketches on the flight to the set, adding the dreadlocks. James Cameron, seated next to Winston, suggested adding mandibles as a final touch 👌🏼
The Predator himself was played by 7ft tall actor Kevin Peter Hall, best known as the bigfoot Harry in Harry & the Hendersons, who also gets a out-of-costume cameo as the helicopter pilot at the end of the film.

    • @josephbeckett2330

I can see it. Man movies use alternative views as a way to help the audience differentiate between characters, for instance scenes only seen in black and white might indicate we are seeing the killer's perspective, or seeing everything in greyscale except for a single piece of clothing in red might indicate we are seeing the movie from a truly neutral perspective, or zooming in of the horror, for instance. We saw this in the Terminator when we witnessed that his point of view was all in red for example. It is a type of movie storytelling technique that does not perfectly translate. It also makes perfect sense if you are seeing this from the perspective of someone not understanding the alien technology + genetics. If the Predator is using heat vision googles, for instance, we might reasonably assume that "it" might not have them on at all times.
I, as an active duty soldier do not walk around 24/7 with night vision googles one. And honestly, I would estimate I have them on maybe 0.001% of the time, favorably. Additionally, part of the point of the movie is to demonstrate just how unknown this thing is. A lot of us have the advantage of knowing some of the generic lore now, but if this is the first you have really seen of the . . . universe, it is very understandable.

I will say though that I don’t think the mud would successfully mask that heat signature for very long lol. Plus there is the interesting question of how much is his vision vs the mask, which you don’t know until he takes it off. Even then, it’s sort of confusing. But I really like the contrast. I did think it was pretty obvious that the predator could see movements and vague outlines of shapes as WELL as anything giving off a heat signature.
However, I see countless people completely unable to understand seemingly obvious metaphors, themes, and character motivations, often chalking it up to bad storytelling or completely misinterpreting it. I’m just noting this because I rarely see comments by people stunned at someone’s idiocy or whatever when this is the case.

25:40 the motivation is something that Predator calls "a worthy kill" someone like Billy, who stood up to him one on one, without a firearm, even denying the Predator a chance of drawing 1st blood by cutting himself with a knife. Billy is a "worthy opponent" by Predator standards, so he "rewards" Billy by taking his spine and skull as a throphy (the demon that takes thropies of men). Everyone else, besides Dutch obviously, is not worthy, and they're just gutted and skinned post mortem.
Also, the Predator won't kill unarmed, injured or very ill people (like cancer or something like that). Basically Everyone that doesn't pose a threat.

23:25 He's Native and he chose to die on his own terms, proudly fighting with just a knife, like his Native ancestors would have done. That's at least the interpretation I've always gave to the scene which, as I commented earlier, is my favorite of the entire movie. • @herrzimm
    @herrzimm 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

No, you had it right. Predator's use of thermal vision allowed him to track everyone down, as well as figure out there was some kind of trap/warning by the amount of time that everyone spent in an area and the way they moved to place the trap/warning. Which is why when Arnold got covered in mud, he became "background noise" and unseen due to the mud being wet/cold and blocking off body temps. When he came back later at night, the mud had hardened, but isolated the body temp making Arnold remain unseen until he went into the water and it washed off.
Also, dry shaving... especially when sweaty... isn't really that big of a deal when you maintain a "close shave" like Mac did. It is really only when you grow "whiskers" that dry-shaving can become painful. Keep it close (like Mac did due to his habit of daily shaving) and it becomes extremely easy and painless.

  • @irreliventable

This movie is so unique. Equal parts 80's action and an episode of the twilight zone. None of the sequels were able to capture that since so much of the final result was ad libbed and altered from the original script. The monster was completely redesigned because the director hated the original costume. This forced them to film the scenes with the alien long after other scenes were done. This added to the use of tension and the predator's "stalker vision" scenes in the first two acts instead of action scenes with the actors and the monster together. Arnold himself changed two things in the movie. First was a terribly out of place "romance" between him and the woman. The other was the final battle with the predator. Originally the monster wasn't supposed to be that much stronger than a human when you take away it's technology. Arny was supposed to win the hand to hand fight at the end. But by the time the monster was redesigned into a giant powerhouse the outcome of the fight was changed. Many people think this or that thing would have made the sequels better but the real problem the first movie wasn't really planned so even if you use the same crew for the sequel the results won't automatically be the same.

Holy shit you are way overthinking this. It can't see him when he's covered in mud. That's all you need to know. It's not that important. What is important is how near perfect this film is. It builds the creature reveal the same way Spielberg built the shark in 'Jaws'. It's not plagued by endless subplots like many modern films *cough Star Wars*. It is endlessly quotable. It relies on very little exposition. It's pacing is perfect. It's casting is perfect and it introduces its characters in a way that immediately makes you understand who these guys are. They're a diverse group of "badasses" who then get butchered (except Arnie). It achieves everything it needs to in just under 2 hours without overdoing it. It has a definite beginning, middle crisis and explosive end, and then it ends exactly when it needs to. If this film was made today, the Predator would still be hanging from the Helicopter as it takes off. We'd also get some stupid "explanation" as to why the Predator hunts humans. We don't need to know. That's what makes it terrifying.
