    If you think the actor playing the Srgt is pretty good at being in charge, that's because he's the real deal. He was a former Srgt in Vietnam so yeah he knows how to act on charge. Behind the scenes he helped the cast with acting more like an authentic unit working together.

      Yeah, you guys are right.Al Matthews who played Sergeant Apone, was a real life Marine Corps Sergeant, who served with the 1st Marine Division in Vietnam.He also played the African American GI In YANKS who gets into a fight with a racist White GI because he was dancing with a white girl at the New Year’s Eve event in England during World War Two.Sergeant Matthews died in 2018 aged 75.RIP SERGEANT MATTHEWS 🙏

      Well, thanks for the clue leading to this information, I had no idea :
      "Al Matthews became the first black Marine to be meritoriously promoted to the rank of Sergeant (E-5). Williams was also the first "black voice" on England's national station, 'Radio 1."
      May he rest in peace.

    The illusion of so many aliens was created with only five costumes. The way it was filmed was genius.

    While *_Alien_* is a cosmic horror film, *_Aliens_* is a sci-fi action film, and they're both _amazing_ examples of both.
    Personally, I'm a very big fan of Ridley Scott's continuation with *_Prometheus_* & *_Alien Covenant_* a lot because they maintain his same cosmic horror element from his first film, whereas *_Alien³_* & *_Alien: Resurrection_* are more of the sci-fi action in their tone.
    Hopefully you have a good time with whichever of the ones you decide to check out after this!!

      I'd disagree with describing Alien as COSMIC horror. Horror, to be sure, but more body horror. At the end of the day, it's just a beast that wants to eat/impregnate you. Nothing cosmic about it.

    • @smockboy
      @smockboy ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@YourXavier You're right, Alien is far more body horror than cosmic horror - but it's not entirely fair to say there are no elements of cosmic horror in it. It plays on the fear of the unknown/unknowable both in its themes and cinematography by barely showing the xenomorph, and what we do see of the xenomorph is both familiar and unfamiliar in uncomfortable ways. The 'gore' in the movie is less of the blood, guts, and bone variety (though, there is some of that) and more the unfamiliar, slimy, goopy substances (the white fluid 'blood' of the androids, the green acid blood of the xenomorph, the slimy textures of the egg room and the eggs themselves as they open. Lastly, the combination of horror and sci-fi elements and the way that the 'technologically advanced' humans are placed in a position of helplessness in the face of an unknown, amoral, and unrelenting entity. Those are all hallmarks of cosmic horror. That said, it certainly doesn't have the most genre-defining elements of cosmic horror: There's no sense of the xenomorph or the setting being 'beyond human comprehension' , the audience isn't confronted with their own insignificance in the grand scheme of things at any point in the movie, there's no sense of human preconceptions of the nature of reality being challenged or incorrect (i.e. nothing in the movie obviously defies what we know of physics, chemistry, biology, etc.), there's no supernatural elements woven into the themes or story, and the settings have a more 'industrial' rather than 'gothic' tone to them.

    The Directors Cut is really good. The only critisism I have of that version is that seeing Hadley's Hope operational and seeing a Face Hugger so early kinda spoils the scene with the marines seeing the Face Huggers in the formaldehyde tanks for the first time. Even though it is a sequel and we can assume most people already know what the Xenomprphs look like, you're supposed to experience it through the eyes of the marines. When they first see it, we're supoosed to see it. Other than that it's a really good version.

      @miller-joel ปีที่แล้ว

      @@juliangrant9718 I didn't delete anything. yt shadow bans for some reason. Sort by date, and it shows up. The questions point out how ridiculous your assumptions are. We had all seen a facehugger before. We all knew what they were and how they worked. We all knew exactly what happened when they lost contact with the colony. There's no "mystery" there.
      This is not a movie for people who had never seen Alien. And even if they had not seen it, it's going to be just as surprising. In fact, if you've never seen a facehugger before, and you don't see the colony scene, you can't understand exactly what the danger is when the facehuggers are chasing Ripley and Newt in the med lab, or when Newt is captured. So that's yet another reason the colony scene is necessary.

    James Cameron is director genius - he directed three of first four highest-grossing films of all time (Avatar I & II, Titanic), he created best sequels of all time (Aliens and Terminator II)
    .. but this was his second big movie he ever made and he get the crew from original Alien, directed by that time legendary Ridley Scott ..
    .. so the crew thank they know better and did not want to listen him, he had to deal with a crew mutiny.
    To convince the crew of his qualities and abilities, he organized a screening of his film Terminator for its members. However, most of the staff ignored his invitation and did not bother to come.
    They even made t-shirts You can't scare me. I work for James Cameron."

    Where Ridley Scott left off, James Cameron came in and made this sequel in his own style, which - just as you observed - is fast-paced. The suspense of the original movie is replaced with action; the mystery and foreboding is enhanced by the race to survive; the threat of one alien is magnified by the presence of several, culminating in the discovery that they have an insect-like Queen against whom there is a final showdown. In short, where "Alien" was cerebral, "Aliens" is physical - not that there's anything wrong with it!
    The casting is good, with Sigourney Weaver playing the increasingly tortured Ripley - the PTSD of her encounter with the first alien is soon compounded by the revelation that having drifted in space for nearly 60 years, everyone she knew and loved has predeceased her and she is an anachronism. That tees up her relationship with Newt later on: on learning that she has lost her daughter, she is motivated to be there for this little girl, who has just lost her real mother.
    That's a good question about Bishop the Android: was his cry of shock and pain on being torn apart by the Queen real, in which case he ended the movie in agony, or was it just part of his programming to emulate human responses to stimuli? One suspects it might be the latter...
    It's up to you whether to carry on with this particular franchise, Whimsory. Avoiding spoilers: Alien 3 is a very different animal, dystopian and depressing; Alien Resurrection is interesting although it feels more like a 90s Hollywood blockbuster (which, to be fair, it is!) than the suspenseful horror that begat it. And then there are the Alien versus Predator spin-offs, which seem to be vehicles for meshing together the creatures from the two classic movies but not much else. They have $2 million worth of special effects and $2 worth of intelligent script-writing.....

    Theatrical cut would be my choice for Aliens. Extra stuff is extra here. Waterworld theatrical would be my choice too.
    That said there are movies that need director's cut because sometimes studios mess with the director's vision so much and *people are actually fans of the director's cut*, where the most watched version is the alternate version. Blade Runner with the intentionally bad voice over is one example. Brazil with US theatrical cut, omg, avoid avoid!

    On a side note - I don't see Ripley as selfless - I think she's more of a survivor mentality the one exception being when her mother-mode kicked in and she wanted to save Newt. She had no such reaction when the other marines were being cocooned and you could easily say when she drove the troop transport/tank/vehicle into the Terraforming facility to rescue the marines that that was survivor-mode as well. Those troops were her best chance at getting off the planet alive since the ones in the vehicle with here were all basically worthless in a fight (except for Bishop who only really prooved himself to be reliable later on).

The actress Jenette Goldstein (who is 100 percent Jewish and 0 percent Hispanic, by the way) showed up to the casting call dressed like a Mexican migrant farm worker because she thought that's what the movie "Aliens" was going to be about. The casting director thought that was so funny that he offered her the part on the condition she play the role in the Mexican immigrant character.

Everyone's character adds just the right amount to the mix, with Ripley's interactions with Newt being particularly well done.
    James Cameron used a lot of the same themes again in "Terminator 2"... including having a kicka$$ female lead, lots of guns and explosions, being hunted by seemingly unstoppable foes, motherhood, artificial humanoids, and those same artificial humanoids acting in ways which redeemed them as being more human than they'd been previously depicted.
