This was Sigourney Weaver's first movie. She was an unknown aspiring actress. She played it so well, you could feel her terror. I saw this in a theater, it was packed. The entire audience reacted together. You could hear the screams outside through the walls of the theater. It was a different world back then.
No it wasn't. She was a small time actress not a big name yet, but that was like her 5th movie, i just checked her iMDB to be sure. I was just a teenager when I saw this film, and not when it was released, they played it again in the late 80s. Today I work in films and had the luck to be on a meeting with Sigourney and I am expecting this rough, tough, laidback woman but she is the most polite, soft speaking actor I EVER met. By the way, it was also Ridley Scott's first film, he did commercials before.
Yep, a sci-fi horror film done to perfection. Even after so many years , it's the sci-fi horror film benchmark to which all other sci-fi horror films made since then are compared . A classic, a masterpiece !

@@Harkness78 It's slow and lethargic by today's standards when people want everything quick and fast but not by late 70's ,80's standards. Back then people and things weren't in such a rush, including film plots , they let them develop at a slower pace .
It is true, yet it has one big flaw imo and that is the demise of the antagonist, the alien, it so flippin unsatisfying. In Aliens the first basic aliens dies so well, burst so juciely compare to this entity that terrorised us the whole movie. We deserved better death for it.
Yes, I agree. Women can be strong and still be feminine. Creating a "strong female character" should embrace the characteristics that make a woman unique and not just have her behaving like a man.
The roles were written to be non-specific and they read both men and women for all the roles, unusual for the time. This film would have been so much weaker with a different Ripley. Really, the whole cast (older, bitching about their jobs, sniping at each other, but competent) moved the film from good to timeless..
Oh, boy! I am, of course, particularly looking forward to this one. "Alien" has been in our culture, lived in our heads, for 43 years. It's strength has not suffered. So excited to share it anew with a viewer I enjoy. Thanks, ya'll. See you!
I have been obsessed with this film since I saw it in the early 80s as a single digit. Not fully prepared for it; still not sure I am. A true masterpiece of sci-fi and horror...!
I will say, it is kind of incredible to see people who know nothing about this movie, simply because it has been such an iconic part of the cultural Zeitgeist for so many years, especially with just how influential it has been. After all this is one of those movies that spawned its own sub-genre of imitators and probably one of the best sequels in movie history
Alien is one of the most horrifying and dread inspiring blockbuster movies of all time. You're not a wimp for being affected by it, and anyone who gives you shit for it is an edgelord or a psychopath.
Right! I remember first watching this film. It was awhile before I rematched it because it is just so stressful. I was rather young at the time. Still not what I would consider a relaxing movie to watch, ha.
I really can't recall what my first reaction to the film was. However, I do remember my dad's - he was so (visibly) shaken that he couldn't go to sleep, which actually is a very unusual reaction from him.
Imagine a dark, crowded theater watching this in 1979-1980. I remember at the end when Ripley was getting Jonesy, the Cat, someone in the audience screamed" F**K the Cat". A bunch of us laughed, cutting the tension. This movie was the most suspenseful, terrifying movie of its time.
I still consider this movie one the most suspensful and terrifying films ever made. Only movie that comes close to quality of feeling is: The Thing 1982 for me.
When I was 14 I watched it for the first time in a dark room at night alone with my cat and of course my cat jumped on my lap with the most impeccable timing ever (breakfast scene). I probably woke some neighbors up with my screaming. For weeks afterwards I had problems getting to sleep because the Alien would always be around me in the dark, in my imagination. I had to sleep with lights on for some time.

I believe the original movie posters had the quote “In Space No One Can Hear You Scream”… As far as crying it depends on the movie and how well it does a good job getting you emotionally invested. Can’t wait for you to watch Aliens next.
Incredible reaction! During the chestburster scene, the actors weren't told exactly what would happen, just that the guy would be on the table freaking out, so their reactions of shock, and horror were totally real.
@@greenman4946 their scripts mention the alien however it never told them how they would be introduced to it. Except for John hurt, the actor with the chestburster. Even then his details are still very vague and he even kept acting the scene even when director originally called cut but backtracked himself and told them to keep going since everyone’s reactions were so genuine.
Funny thing is, they didn't need to do that for Veronica Cartwright. Crying and screaming at the same time is sort of her go to move as an actress. Ever since she was in The Birds as a kid she seems to do it more often than not in her acting gigs.
@@pickleboy6059 That's one of the advantages of practical effects. They did the same thing in "Shaun of the Dead," when the Irish guy met his maker and in the final duel in "Sanjuro." The actors really have something to react to, and once in character, be shocked and horrified by because they don't know how horrific it's really going to be, instead of trying to react to a tennis ball on the end of a stick.
My mom told me she and her best friend went to the movies to see this while she was pregnant for me. The scene where the alien burst out of the dude's chest at the dinner table scared her best friend so badly, she got up and left the theater. Mom had to go after her big and pregnant, both ended up not finishing the movie.
My parents saw this for a date night when she was 7 months pregnant. Mom was so scared she had to leave the theater for fear of having my little sister early. She didn't but it left an impression. This movie even freaked out my Dad, and he don't scare easily.

Not an action movie or thriller, he'd have went to the movies to see that all by himself. Mom was pretty much immune to getting scared from horror movies, to where she would allow me and my little sister watch them with her on weekends, leading to a lot of sleepless nights for me in my youth and current desensitization I have to this day. She did NOT care what I watched either; some of the gooiest, wettest puppets and special effects of that generation, I was exposed to as early as 5 years old

Never seen a reaction with tears. I think it may have something to do with the sheer isolation and inevitability of it all. The characters are established quickly and believably and all the actors sell their emotions really well, Weaver most of all. Just an unmatched film.
People generally mistake crying as being caused by sadness and pain, but it is actually a reaction to stress or feelings of helplessness (which can be brought on by sadness and pain). That’s why crying releases endorphins, the anti-stress hormones to make you feel better. So while it is not a common reaction to horror movies, it is not unheard of either.
A friend of mine saw this movie in the theatre when it first came out. He missed the chest-bursting scene because he went to the bathroom. He came back to the theatre to find the entire audience in chaos.
Don't knock yourself Arianna! When this film first hit the cinemas it quite literally scared the living shit out of all audiences. It also firmly established a new genre of film: Science Fiction Horror! The second instalment, 'Aliens', was released barely six years later and its mere existence in theatres created such great fearful anxiety that returning viewers were reluctant to take their seats before this feature began! That is the power of motion pictures!
True, the previous decades had movies like _Forbidden Planet,_ _Planet of the Vampires,_ _It, the Terror Beyond Space_ and numerous other films that likely influenced Ridley Scott.

Might I add The Quatermass Xperiment and it's sequels along with X the Unknown, The Invasion of the Bodysnatchers, The Andromeda Strain and many many others. As commented on before, Sci-fi Horror definitely didn't start in 1979 with Alien (Alien is still a great film however and I still think it's the best in the franchise). 😉😊🥰

Fun fact: in the original script (called Star Beast) Ripley was a man. Sigourney Weaver auditioned for a different part and Ridley Scott was so impressed by her he changed Ripley to a woman for her.

It was in the script itself, so anyone who says it wasn't gender neutral doesn't know what they're talking about.

Ridley Scott said, "I was making the Texas Chainsaw Massacre in space horror movie, where there is no place to escape to, and the alien was going to take out the crew one by one." Ridley succeeded beyond his own expectations, I think.
I'm 35 years old. my father is a huge fan of this film. I remember always being drawn towards the action figures and posters he had in his art room. I think I was about 7 when he showed me this film. to this day the opening title sequence paralyzes me to this day. this is the one horror film will always be my favorite for nostalgia reasons and it just being a great film. also brought my girlfriend and I closer cause we had the same experience growing up. we have alien plushes scattered around the house lol

I had the honor of seeing this at the Theater with my dad and cousin when I was 14. It was my first R-Rated movie and it did not disappoint! I was never so scared seeing this on the big screen. 40 years later, it came back to the big screen and my son (23) and I went and saw it in it's natural goriness. Maybe in space no one can hear you scream, but in a theater, everyone can! Next is Aliens!
I was 14, too, when I saw it in the theatre, and just like you it was my first R-rated movie (or rather with an age requirement of 15). It was kind of a rite of passage for those of us born in 1965 to 1) manage to bluff our way into the theatre, and 2) watch the movie everyone was talking about. "Alien" has aged better than most of us...

I was able to see this on the big screen about 2015 or so. It was amazing to see that this movie has claustrophobic feeling on the big screen. VHS, DVD, BluRay, 4K all make you feel cramped with the crew.
"How did it get this big this fast?!" They didn't explain in the movie but there was actually a day or two that passed while they were building the trackers and makeshift weapons to use against the creature. In the meantime, it was gorging itself on stored organic and inorganic supplies throughout the ship and growing at an accellerated rate.
Someone possibly should have put two and two together. They found the alien ship with the eggs that released the facehugger alien, they also found a dead alien pilot whose ribs seem to have burst outwards, the same thing that happens to their crewmember. Somewhere along the lifecycle this thing must get big enough to be laying a ton of 2-3ft tall eggs, and it grew damn fast inside him...
I also saw a single piece of concept art that showed a centipede thing that was in a life stage between the chestburster and xenomorph full size. It never made it to production though, but it would have helped explain the size issue.
What sets 'Alien' apart from other horror movies is that we can relate to characters. They are just simple workers trying to make a living. All the dialogue, jokes, messing around with co-workers make them so relatable to us. You don't get that feeling with other movies because the characters are just meat to be killed by a monster.
Exactly. And that's what has been lost over all of the following Alien films since the original one. I don't like Sci fi or anything too unbelievable but this film hit a nice balance as the future just looked dark and bleak and guys were still blue collar

This movie has been traumatizing people for over 40 years now. It's amazing how well it holds up and still scares the crap out of people. The chestburster scene is iconic for a reason! Wouldn't it be great if this film had a sequel that is not only an equally amazing 10/10 but an ACTION horror movie? WELL GOOD NEWS!
The Alien sequel was basically an action movie with lots of standard wisecracks and marines shooting at about a thousand creatures like swatting flies. No comparison to the original.
Just imagine..... this movie is 43 years old and it STILL scares the crap out of first time viewers today! That's how GOOD this movie really is! Just a timeless masterpiece!
It IS an emotional film if you have any empathy for people who are just caught in an impossible situation trying to do a job of work up against forces beyond their control. Good on you.
Another game changing movie.... Was supposed to simply be an "answer" to the surprise of Star Wars but then some crazy idiot gave it to Ridley Scott and suddenly SciFi had staggering weight and intensity!

The great thing about the crew of the Nostromo is that they immediately figured out the Xenomorphs' acidic blood just by observing the behavior of it as it melted through the ship. A lot of modern horror characters are absolutely clueless even when they see something happening right in front of them, so to see the Nostromo crew figure stuff out right away is part of the brilliance of the film.
I never thought about that, but it’s so true. Even though the characters are highly intelligent, being scientists and all, the mystery of the Alien remains
The movie made it to Turkey in 1981 and i'm proud to tell that my mother was pregnant with me when they were watching the movie in theater with my father :) Giger's Xenomorph is one of the most breathtaking (no pun intended) alien life forms ever designed. Timeless classic. Great reaction!
Excellent, heartfelt reactions. Arianna, I have watched this movie many, many times. It was easy for me to become emotionally attached to the characters. The Cocoon scene is very disturbing, and somewhat difficult to watch. As many times as I have seen this movie, I still tense-up and break into a sweat! Amazing Cast; I cannot think of anyone better for this film. Tom Skerritt, “Captain Dallas”, is now age 88 (still active in the film industry), and is the only surviving male cast member, including the young man who portrayed the Alien (he died quite young). Sigourney and Veronica are alive and well. A perfect film, in every way!
Why is it so fun to watch these old movies with younger folks? I think it's cool to see the younger generation appreciate and enjoy films I grew up with. I'm actually surprised how much the younger folks enjoy - Diehard, Alien/s, etc - it's a great surprise. Films are so different now that it must be really different for a younger person to watch these 70s.80s,90s flicks. Keep up your great work and keep having fun.
I'm glad you saw this "blind", not really knowing what it was about. in 1979, the trailers for it showed absolutely nothing about it. not who was in it, what specifically it was about. all the trailers showed was an egg with a crack in it, eerie green light spilling of the crack, and the tag line: "In space, no one can hear you scream." Everyone went to see it on the big screen blind. and consider: this was all done practical. the only CGI were the graphics seen on the monochromatic computer screens on the ship.
That's how I saw it. We were about 30 years old and just happened to go to the movies on a Friday night. The theater was full of teenage girls who screamed at everything. Sometimes I jumped because they screamed and not because something scared me. Usually his night off was Tuesday and our movies were almost private showings.
I am proud of you for being affected by this movie. Especially when parker and Lambert are killed toward the end. Lambert is violated by the alien before her death. The psychological interpretation of that can make a person emotional. Also Lamberts final scream and the immediate silence is an indication that Ripley is now alone with that horrible creature on that giant, gothic ship. All of the elements of horror are there.
Parker and Lambert's death scene is the one that disturbed me the most too. Everything you mentioned about that scene got under my skin and lingered there for a looooong time.

I saw this in the theater when it was released and I reacted the same way; no one had ever seen anything like this before this movie. The characters feel real so seeing them killed in such terrible ways is emotional
Out of all the reaction videos i watched, you have nailed it. It is a space tug boat for hauling ships and massive refineries. Glad i am not the only person.
These were all top notch actors who brought serious skills and heart to their roles. All of the characters had personality that you could humanly relate to. Except for Ashe, you didn't want to see any of them die. That's why you cried.
There’s a subplot in the longer version of the movie where Ripley and Dallas were seeing each other. Near the end of the movie, Ripley finds the crew cocooned by the alien but beyond help…still alive for the most part.
@@Diegesis Actually, it isn't. It is the director's cut but even with the new scenes added, they cut the movie a few minutes shorter then the theatrical cut. This is about the only movie where I prefer the theatrical cut over the director's.
@@Diegesis It appears that Theatrical vs Directors cut is primarily boiled down to the Director's Cut adds back in the "Ripley tries to enforce quarantine" and "Dallas and Harry Dean Stanton being used as eggs" scenes, while deleting some of the longer tracking ambiance shots to make the rest of the film tighter, actually shortening the runtime even with the extra scenes. So yes, this is clearly the "Directors Cut" (Ridley actually preferred the other) that you used. Really either cut is fine, although the Xeno's using bodies contradicts the life cycle shown in Aliens.
@@grife3000 I too prefer the theatrical version - better atmosphere in my opinion. as for the lifecycle, not necessarily contradictory. in lack of a queen, ants and bees do have the ability to create a queen egg. I like to think that is what it was doing. Ridley stated that he envisioned them as having a rather short lifecycle and the recycling of biomaterial from life forms was how it reproduces before it dies.
One thing that I always think is cool is how drastically films like this overestimated where our hardware building capabilities would be “in the future” but underestimated our software building capabilities. Lol this massive, amazing spaceship with cryopods and a cyborg is being run by like a Commodore 64 operating system 🤣🤣
I think of it as it's a commercial utility tug boat, not a cutting edge civilian starliner or military flagship. "The Company" is going to use the cheapest thing they possibly can to reliably run the ship. Anything more is a waste of money as the crew probably spends over 90% of any voyage asleep. I think it's great, it looks advanced by 1979 standards, but aged by our own (maybe even the crews') standard and even if by accident, more accurate than they may have realized.
I first saw this movie at theater back in the early 80's. I was 7. Very scary for a little kid, I couldn't even sit in my seat. It remains as one of my favorites of all time.
I'm only 32yrs but I've been raised with 70-80 movies (I was raised by my granpa). It's cool to see younger generations look at these movies today and are like "omg this is soooo good!!!". Some of these movies aged like a good whine. Like Terminator 2. Most of this movie as better FX and practical effects than todays movies and it don't age.

27:49 Because this movie, unlike most horror films, actually makes you *care* about the characters. That's how ahead of its time Alien was. Even today, this film has been untouched by time and is still a masterpiece of cinema.
Love this movie to bits, I remember this movie traumatizing me as a teenager and I've loved it ever since. Ellen Ripley is literally my movie heroine, I've always wanted to be just like her an ass kicking, take no s**t survivor that uses determination and intelligence to make it through any situation.
I remember sitting in the theater as a teenager watching this movie, sitting way down in the chair , peeping through my fingers, with a knot in my stomach. The Alien busting out my man’s chest left me traumatize for a few years. The tension, suspense, and the leaving things to your imagination is what made this film such a classic !!!👍🏽👍🏽

every time i see a reaction to this movie i'm struck all over again at how good it still looks. not just the designs and effects, but the cinematography, editing, all of it. whatever else you think of them, scott's first four movies, even one that doesn't fully work like "legend," have to be among the most visually stunning.

Truly one of the best Lovecraftian cosmic horror movies we will ever see. My girlfriend and I went to see this in summer ‘79 - she was gripping my forearm so tightly I thought the blood supply was getting cut off. At key points I was holding my breath and didn’t realize it. I enjoy the Alien franchise in it’s entirety - sometimes for better or worse - but the first film will always remain the high watermark for me. I loved your reaction! It’s such a good movie. In the early 80’s my Junior High showed this movie to us 9th graders for a science class party at the end of the year. LOVED it!
An amazing movie. One of the things that I read about it, and it makes sense (from a certain twisted point of view), is that the writer and director intentionally created much of the visuals with as much disturbing sexual imagery and undertones in mind as possible (the face hugger symbolizing rape, the phallic design of the alien's head, the alien bursting out of the chest to represent birth) because they knew that our subconscious minds see sex as both a great but also potentially disturbing and gross.
I read somewhere that on a list of 100 primal fears common to humanity (spiders, darkness, isolation, death, snakes, asphyxiation, rape, choking, ….) that Alien had 78 of them.
When the movie first came out, the promotional material/trailers also told us nothing. It was an amazing experience in 1979, probably the greatest science fiction/horror movie I had ever seen and everyone I saw it with liked it also. Moreover, even the actors had some surprises in store and the reactions in one scene in particular are very genuine.
Movies aren't made like this nowadays. Modern movies are all about how much CGI and tropes you can cram into it. Nobody cares to tell a good story with good acting anymore. This was quite the event back in 79. Everybody (including me) was expecting to see a Star Wars rip off, instead we got a horror movie set in space. It was excellent then, and it's still excellent now.
I agree with you completely on your response to what Ash said. I have always felt the line, "I can't lie to you about your chances, but....you have my sympathies" is one of the darkest and yet most realist lines ever written for film.
Ok, so, 2001, THX 1138, Soylent Green, Silent Running, Andromeda Strain, etc. Alien. How long does it take till you see the full size Alien? Perfect for a deep space movie. Yaphet Kotto, Harry Dean Stanton....as you watch all 4 of the movies, watch how there is more and more slimy lubrication associated with each movie. It gets pretty ridiculous.
fun fact... the actors did not know how the alien was going to present it's self. so the surprise and shock is so genuine that the scene becomes that much more powerful.
And there it is. When this was released ( no truer description) we were caught off guard...lol. Watching this in a crowded theater was an experience. Some people were sitting in the aisles because they didn't want to return to their seats. After they landed on the planet all bets were off, from there it was visceral. .." I admire its purity...

18:24, for this scene, they actually had a Doberman muzzled hiding behind a box, and when the director said action, they removed the box, and the cat was hissing at the dog to make the scene work.
My first time watching this was in the Egyptian in Hollywood. Huge first-run theater, pieces of the movie sets out front. Everyone screaming in the audience.

This was Sigourney Weaver's first movie. She was an unknown aspiring actress. She played it so well, you could feel her terror. I saw this in a theater, it was packed. The entire audience reacted together. You could hear the screams outside through the walls of the theater.
It was a different world back then.
No it wasn't. She was a small time actress not a big name yet, but that was like her 5th movie, i just checked her iMDB to be sure.

I was just a teenager when I saw this film, and not when it was released, they played it again in the late 80s. Today I work in films and had the luck to be on a meeting with Sigourney and I am expecting this rough, tough, laidback woman but she is the most polite, soft speaking actor I EVER met. By the way, it was also Ridley Scott's first film, he did commercials before.

Back then people and things weren't in such a rush, including film plots , they let them develop at a slower pace .
It is true, yet it has one big flaw imo and that is the demise of the antagonist, the alien, it so flippin unsatisfying.
In Aliens the first basic aliens dies so well, burst so juciely compare to this entity that terrorised us the whole movie.

Yes, I agree. Women can be strong and still be feminine. Creating a "strong female character" should embrace the characteristics that make a woman unique and not just have her behaving like a man.
The roles were written to be non-specific and they read both men and women for all the roles, unusual for the time. This film would have been so much weaker with a different Ripley. Really, the whole cast (older, bitching about their jobs, sniping at each other, but competent) moved the film from good to timeless..

I will say, it is kind of incredible to see people who know nothing about this movie, simply because it has been such an iconic part of the cultural Zeitgeist for so many years, especially with just how influential it has been. After all this is one of those movies that spawned its own sub-genre of imitators and probably one of the best sequels in movie history
Alien is one of the most horrifying and dread inspiring blockbuster movies of all time. You're not a wimp for being affected by it, and anyone who gives you shit for it is an edgelord or a psychopath.
Right! I remember first watching this film. It was awhile before I rematched it because it is just so stressful. I was rather young at the time. Still not what I would consider a relaxing movie to watch, ha.
I really can't recall what my first reaction to the film was. However, I do remember my dad's - he was so (visibly) shaken that he couldn't go to sleep, which actually is a very unusual reaction from him.

Imagine a dark, crowded theater watching this in 1979-1980. I remember at the end when Ripley was getting Jonesy, the Cat, someone in the audience screamed" F**K the Cat". A bunch of us laughed, cutting the tension. This movie was the most suspenseful, terrifying movie of its time.
I saw this movie twice in the theaters when it came out and each time someone or more than one yelled F**k The Cat.
I still consider this movie one the most suspensful and terrifying films ever made. Only movie that comes close to quality of feeling is: The Thing 1982 for me.
When I was 14 I watched it for the first time in a dark room at night alone with my cat and of course my cat jumped on my lap with the most impeccable timing ever (breakfast scene).
I probably woke some neighbors up with my screaming.
For weeks afterwards I had problems getting to sleep because the Alien would always be around me in the dark, in my imagination.
I had to sleep with lights on for some time.

Incredible reaction! During the chestburster scene, the actors weren't told exactly what would happen, just that the guy would be on the table freaking out, so their reactions of shock, and horror were totally real.
That’s not true. They had all read the script.
@@greenman4946 their scripts mention the alien however it never told them how they would be introduced to it. Except for John hurt, the actor with the chestburster. Even then his details are still very vague and he even kept acting the scene even when director originally called cut but backtracked himself and told them to keep going since everyone’s reactions were so genuine.
Funny thing is, they didn't need to do that for Veronica Cartwright. Crying and screaming at the same time is sort of her go to move as an actress. Ever since she was in The Birds as a kid she seems to do it more often than not in her acting gigs.
Also, "Parker" was instructed to talk over Ripley's lines (ad-libbed, she didn't know), to create tension - it worked!
@@pickleboy6059 That's one of the advantages of practical effects. They did the same thing in "Shaun of the Dead," when the Irish guy met his maker and in the final duel in "Sanjuro." The actors really have something to react to, and once in character, be shocked and horrified by because they don't know how horrific it's really going to be, instead of trying to react to a tennis ball on the end of a stick.
My mom told me she and her best friend went to the movies to see this while she was pregnant for me. The scene where the alien burst out of the dude's chest at the dinner table scared her best friend so badly, she got up and left the theater. Mom had to go after her big and pregnant, both ended up not finishing the movie.

My parents saw this for a date night when she was 7 months pregnant. Mom was so scared she had to leave the theater for fear of having my little sister early. She didn't but it left an impression. This movie even freaked out my Dad, and he don't scare easily.

Not an action movie or thriller, he'd have went to the movies to see that all by himself. Mom was pretty much immune to getting scared from horror movies, to where she would allow me and my little sister watch them with her on weekends, leading to a lot of sleepless nights for me in my youth and current desensitization I have to this day. She did NOT care what I watched either; some of the gooiest, wettest puppets and special effects of that generation, I was exposed to as early as 5 years old

Never seen a reaction with tears. I think it may have something to do with the sheer isolation and inevitability of it all. The characters are established quickly and believably and all the actors sell their emotions really well, Weaver most of all. Just an unmatched film.
People generally mistake crying as being caused by sadness and pain, but it is actually a reaction to stress or feelings of helplessness (which can be brought on by sadness and pain). That’s why crying releases endorphins, the anti-stress hormones to make you feel better. So while it is not a common reaction to horror movies, it is not unheard of either.
A friend of mine saw this movie in the theatre when it first came out. He missed the chest-bursting scene because he went to the bathroom. He came back to the theatre to find the entire audience in chaos.
Literally missed one of the most surprisingly horrifying scenes in history.

Don't knock yourself Arianna! When this film first hit the cinemas it quite literally scared the living shit out of all audiences. It also firmly established a new genre of film: Science Fiction Horror! The second instalment, 'Aliens', was released barely six years later and its mere existence in theatres created such great fearful anxiety that returning viewers were reluctant to take their seats before this feature began! That is the power of motion pictures!
Sci-fi horror has been around way before Alien.
True, the previous decades had movies like _Forbidden Planet,_ _Planet of the Vampires,_ _It, the Terror Beyond Space_ and numerous other films that likely influenced Ridley Scott.

Might I add The Quatermass Xperiment and it's sequels along with X the Unknown, The Invasion of the Bodysnatchers, The Andromeda Strain and many many others. As commented on before, Sci-fi Horror definitely didn't start in 1979 with Alien (Alien is still a great film however and I still think it's the best in the franchise). 😉😊🥰

Fun fact: in the original script (called Star Beast) Ripley was a man. Sigourney Weaver auditioned for a different part and Ridley Scott was so impressed by her he changed Ripley to a woman for her.

I'm 35 years old. my father is a huge fan of this film. I remember always being drawn towards the action figures and posters he had in his art room. I think I was about 7 when he showed me this film. to this day the opening title sequence paralyzes me to this day. this is the one horror film will always be my favorite for nostalgia reasons and it just being a great film. also brought my girlfriend and I closer cause we had the same experience growing up. we have alien plushes scattered around the house lol

I had the honor of seeing this at the Theater with my dad and cousin when I was 14. It was my first R-Rated movie and it did not disappoint! I was never so scared seeing this on the big screen. 40 years later, it came back to the big screen and my son (23) and I went and saw it in it's natural goriness. Maybe in space no one can hear you scream, but in a theater, everyone can! Next is Aliens!
I was 14, too, when I saw it in the theatre, and just like you it was my first R-rated movie (or rather with an age requirement of 15). It was kind of a rite of passage for those of us born in 1965 to 1) manage to bluff our way into the theatre, and 2) watch the movie everyone was talking about. "Alien" has aged better than most of us...

I was able to see this on the big screen about 2015 or so. It was amazing to see that this movie has claustrophobic feeling on the big screen. VHS, DVD, BluRay, 4K all make you feel cramped with the crew.
I still watch Alien, Aliens, Predator 1 and 2 even to this day. Absolute classics.

They didn't explain in the movie but there was actually a day or two that passed while they were building the trackers and makeshift weapons to use against the creature. In the meantime, it was gorging itself on stored organic and inorganic supplies throughout the ship and growing at an accellerated rate.
Someone possibly should have put two and two together. They found the alien ship with the eggs that released the facehugger alien, they also found a dead alien pilot whose ribs seem to have burst outwards, the same thing that happens to their crewmember. Somewhere along the lifecycle this thing must get big enough to be laying a ton of 2-3ft tall eggs, and it grew damn fast inside him...
I also saw a single piece of concept art that showed a centipede thing that was in a life stage between the chestburster and xenomorph full size. It never made it to production though, but it would have helped explain the size issue.

What sets 'Alien' apart from other horror movies is that we can relate to characters. They are just simple workers trying to make a living. All the dialogue, jokes, messing around with co-workers make them so relatable to us. You don't get that feeling with other movies because the characters are just meat to be killed by a monster.

Exactly. And that's what has been lost over all of the following Alien films since the original one. I don't like Sci fi or anything too unbelievable but this film hit a nice balance as the future just looked dark and bleak and guys were still blue collar

The Alien sequel was basically an action movie with lots of standard wisecracks and marines shooting at about a thousand creatures like swatting flies. No comparison to the original.

The great thing about the crew of the Nostromo is that they immediately figured out the Xenomorphs' acidic blood just by observing the behavior of it as it melted through the ship. A lot of modern horror characters are absolutely clueless even when they see something happening right in front of them, so to see the Nostromo crew figure stuff out right away is part of the brilliance of the film.
I never thought about that, but it’s so true. Even though the characters are highly intelligent, being scientists and all, the mystery of the Alien remains

Excellent, heartfelt reactions. Arianna, I have watched this movie many, many times. It was easy for me to become emotionally attached to the characters. The Cocoon scene is very disturbing, and somewhat difficult to watch. As many times as I have seen this movie, I still tense-up and break into a sweat! Amazing Cast; I cannot think of anyone better for this film. Tom Skerritt, “Captain Dallas”, is now age 88 (still active in the film industry), and is the only surviving male cast member, including the young man who portrayed the Alien (he died quite young). Sigourney and Veronica are alive and well. A perfect film, in every way!
Why is it so fun to watch these old movies with younger folks? I think it's cool to see the younger generation appreciate and enjoy films I grew up with. I'm actually surprised how much the younger folks enjoy - Diehard, Alien/s, etc - it's a great surprise. Films are so different now that it must be really different for a younger person to watch these 70s.80s,90s flicks. Keep up your great work and keep having fun.
Alien was groundbreaking and really raised the bar for Sci-fi horror. One of my all time favorites.

The guy who played the alien, was from Nigeria, and this was his first and last movie he ever made. He was about 6feet 10 inches tall.
I'm glad you saw this "blind", not really knowing what it was about. in 1979, the trailers for it showed absolutely nothing about it. not who was in it, what specifically it was about. all the trailers showed was an egg with a crack in it, eerie green light spilling of the crack, and the tag line: "In space, no one can hear you scream."
Everyone went to see it on the big screen blind.
and consider: this was all done practical. the only CGI were the graphics seen on the monochromatic computer screens on the ship.
That's how I saw it. We were about 30 years old and just happened to go to the movies on a Friday night. The theater was full of teenage girls who screamed at everything. Sometimes I jumped because they screamed and not because something scared me. Usually his night off was Tuesday and our movies were almost private showings.
I am proud of you for being affected by this movie. Especially when parker and Lambert are killed toward the end. Lambert is violated by the alien before her death. The psychological interpretation of that can make a person emotional. Also Lamberts final scream and the immediate silence is an indication that Ripley is now alone with that horrible creature on that giant, gothic ship. All of the elements of horror are there.
Parker and Lambert's death scene is the one that disturbed me the most too. Everything you mentioned about that scene got under my skin and lingered there for a looooong time.

I saw this in the theater when it was released and I reacted the same way; no one had ever seen anything like this before this movie. The characters feel real so seeing them killed in such terrible ways is emotional

These were all top notch actors who brought serious skills and heart to their roles. All of the characters had personality that you could humanly relate to. Except for Ashe, you didn't want to see any of them die. That's why you cried.

There’s a subplot in the longer version of the movie where Ripley and Dallas were seeing each other. Near the end of the movie, Ripley finds the crew cocooned by the alien but beyond help…still alive for the most part.

@@Diegesis Actually, it isn't. It is the director's cut but even with the new scenes added, they cut the movie a few minutes shorter then the theatrical cut. This is about the only movie where I prefer the theatrical cut over the director's.

@@Diegesis It appears that Theatrical vs Directors cut is primarily boiled down to the Director's Cut adds back in the "Ripley tries to enforce quarantine" and "Dallas and Harry Dean Stanton being used as eggs" scenes, while deleting some of the longer tracking ambiance shots to make the rest of the film tighter, actually shortening the runtime even with the extra scenes. So yes, this is clearly the "Directors Cut" (Ridley actually preferred the other) that you used.
Really either cut is fine, although the Xeno's using bodies contradicts the life cycle shown in Aliens.

as for the lifecycle, not necessarily contradictory. in lack of a queen, ants and bees do have the ability to create a queen egg. I like to think that is what it was doing.
Ridley stated that he envisioned them as having a rather short lifecycle and the recycling of biomaterial from life forms was how it reproduces before it dies.

One thing that I always think is cool is how drastically films like this overestimated where our hardware building capabilities would be “in the future” but underestimated our software building capabilities. Lol this massive, amazing spaceship with cryopods and a cyborg is being run by like a Commodore 64 operating system 🤣🤣
Well that big explosion at Cyberdyne Systems screwed up the timeline.
I think of it as it's a commercial utility tug boat, not a cutting edge civilian starliner or military flagship. "The Company" is going to use the cheapest thing they possibly can to reliably run the ship. Anything more is a waste of money as the crew probably spends over 90% of any voyage asleep. I think it's great, it looks advanced by 1979 standards, but aged by our own (maybe even the crews') standard and even if by accident, more accurate than they may have realized.

I'm only 32yrs but I've been raised with 70-80 movies (I was raised by my granpa). It's cool to see younger generations look at these movies today and are like "omg this is soooo good!!!".

27:49 Because this movie, unlike most horror films, actually makes you *care* about the characters. That's how ahead of its time Alien was. Even today, this film has been untouched by time and is still a masterpiece of cinema.
Love this movie to bits, I remember this movie traumatizing me as a teenager and I've loved it ever since. Ellen Ripley is literally my movie heroine, I've always wanted to be just like her an ass kicking, take no s**t survivor that uses determination and intelligence to make it through any situation.
I remember sitting in the theater as a teenager watching this movie, sitting way down in the chair , peeping through my fingers, with a knot in my stomach. The Alien busting out my man’s chest left me traumatize for a few years. The tension, suspense, and the leaving things to your imagination is what made this film such a classic !!!👍🏽👍🏽

every time i see a reaction to this movie i'm struck all over again at how good it still looks. not just the designs and effects, but the cinematography, editing, all of it. whatever else you think of them, scott's first four movies, even one that doesn't fully work like "legend," have to be among the most visually stunning.
Ripley is THE heroine. Love the character.

Truly one of the best Lovecraftian cosmic horror movies we will ever see. My girlfriend and I went to see this in summer ‘79 - she was gripping my forearm so tightly I thought the blood supply was getting cut off. At key points I was holding my breath and didn’t realize it. I enjoy the Alien franchise in it’s entirety - sometimes for better or worse - but the first film will always remain the high watermark for me. Thanks for sharing your watching experience with all of us!

I loved your reaction! It’s such a good movie. In the early 80’s my Junior High showed this movie to us 9th graders for a science class party at the end of the year. LOVED it!
An amazing movie. One of the things that I read about it, and it makes sense (from a certain twisted point of view), is that the writer and director intentionally created much of the visuals with as much disturbing sexual imagery and undertones in mind as possible (the face hugger symbolizing rape, the phallic design of the alien's head, the alien bursting out of the chest to represent birth) because they knew that our subconscious minds see sex as both a great but also potentially disturbing and gross.
HR Geiger did the designs with this in mind, but Ridley Scott was down for it.
I read somewhere that on a list of 100 primal fears common to humanity (spiders, darkness, isolation, death, snakes, asphyxiation, rape, choking, ….) that Alien had 78 of them.
When the movie first came out, the promotional material/trailers also told us nothing. It was an amazing experience in 1979, probably the greatest science fiction/horror movie I had ever seen and everyone I saw it with liked it also. Moreover, even the actors had some surprises in store and the reactions in one scene in particular are very genuine.
Movies aren't made like this nowadays. Modern movies are all about how much CGI and tropes you can cram into it. Nobody cares to tell a good story with good acting anymore.
This was quite the event back in 79. Everybody (including me) was expecting to see a Star Wars rip off, instead we got a horror movie set in space. It was excellent then, and it's still excellent now.
instead, now, we have captain marvel or the disaster from star wars.
I agree with you completely on your response to what Ash said. I have always felt the line, "I can't lie to you about your chances, but....you have my sympathies" is one of the darkest and yet most realist lines ever written for film.
I still believe this is one of the best horror movies ever made.

Ok, so, 2001, THX 1138, Soylent Green, Silent Running, Andromeda Strain, etc. Alien. How long does it take till you see the full size Alien? Perfect for a deep space movie. Yaphet Kotto, Harry Dean Stanton....as you watch all 4 of the movies, watch how there is more and more slimy lubrication associated with each movie. It gets pretty ridiculous.

During the chest bursting scene none of the actors were informed about it and they were genuinely freaking out!
fun fact... the actors did not know how the alien was going to present it's self. so the surprise and shock is so genuine that the scene becomes that much more powerful.
And there it is. When this was released ( no truer description) we were caught off guard...lol. Watching this in a crowded theater was an experience. Some people were sitting in the aisles because they didn't want to return to their seats. After they landed on the planet all bets were off, from there it was visceral.

18:24, for this scene, they actually had a Doberman muzzled hiding behind a box, and when the director said action, they removed the box, and the cat was hissing at the dog to make the scene work.

My first time watching this was in the Egyptian in Hollywood. Huge first-run theater, pieces of the movie sets out front. Everyone screaming in the audience.
Reviewers at the time called this an update on the haunted house flick with a spaceship as the house and an alien as the ghost.
