One of the things that makes this movie feel so real and gritty are the actors talking at the same time, talking over each other. It feels like a crew in a pressure cooker. Combined with these detailed, tactile sets - it’s just amazing. I used to like Aliens more as a kid but every time I watch this one I like it more.

I was 15 years old when this came out and I watched it. the impression it made on me... to this day I still have dreams, not about the alien, but about the sets and the ambience. the same goes for Bladerunner (which may appear to be in the same universe as Alien) where I'll just have dreams about the sets, the music, the ambience, but none of the characters.

Apparently, Yaphet Kotto really antagonized Sigourney Weaver on set, so when she yells at him around 18:30, she's genuinely pissed.

    • @Lethgar_Smith
      @Lethgar_Smith 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Ridley Scott allowed the actors to improvise. Yaphet Koto really sank his teeth into that. A lot of his banter is directly from him. Dan O'Bannon is not a very good writer. He had an awesome idea for a sci-fi movie but the dialogue was horrible. They spent months trying to get it into some kind of shootable condition. The result was the actors throwing in a lot of their own ides to help flesh things out a bit.

27:49: I think Maple like so many of us, liked this film because it was such an honest and earnest sci-fi horror. Big production, but not pretentious, just sophisticated enough to tell an effective story, with relatable to likable characters, in a compellingly terrifying situation. And, it was a complete story, that had a very good start, a life or death adventure, a crazy third act twist, and a nearly perfect ending-- overall a great film, with just as good musical scoring and sound effects/editing…. And also, the way it’s shot, the cinematography was just artfully executed and beautifully crafted… from the handheld camera shots, to the incredible visuals of space, planets and the ship, to LV-426 itself, the film is just a gorgeous film to look at too.

This was a movie I did not see until my early teens, as I was 8 years old when this movie came out. I loved it the first time I saw it. And the sequel, Aliens, from 1986, was just as awesome. Sigourney Weaver reprises her role from the first movie; she was also in the original Ghostbusters and it's sequel. She is a real badass in Aliens.

For those not in the know, H.R. Giger is the artist who created the "biomechanical" aesthetic. This is one of those weird situations where the artist's name isn't nearly as famous as his work is. Typically, people associate the aesthetic with Alien (think that sweaty, slimy, ridgy, organic aesthetic).

    Amazing.
One of the most iconic films of it's era and genre.
The great Ridley Scott's second film and first of his many masterpieces.
This was Sigourney Weaver's second film, first role as an lead actress and one of her most iconic roles ever.
5 of the castmembers are no longer living.
One of the writers called it, 'JAWS in space' and was deep in it's nightmarish nature.
Truly pushing the boundaries of it's tones and the creativity within it's production.
The creature was designed by the H.R. Giger from his bio-mechanical artwork known as Necronom IV.
Theatrical cut or director's cut, the first installment is untouchable in it's presentation.
Oscar winner for Best Visual Effects among so many awards it received.
Earliest movie merchandise was a graphic novel, toys, calendars and Halloween costumes.
Total major influence on sci-fi horror thrillers for years to come.
The preceding films in the mainline series go up and down in terms of reception & box office.
You got about 6 more films to go including Alien:Romulus.

I regard this as a standalone horror, albeit a rewrite of Dark Star which was Alien writer Dan O'Bannon's student collaboration with John Carpenter (The Thing), switching from brilliant low budget stoner comedy to horror, but retaining the space trucker vibe. Ridley Scott brought the directorial elements, including nods to noir, Hitchcock and German expressionism, and artist HR Giger gave it his signature dark sexualised look and feel. This also has the most accomplished cast.
The subsequent "sequels" are an action franchise. Good, but more James Cameron building on his Terminator approach than anything to do with this.
