- In this video we are going to look at a common issue causing suspension clunking and noise in the front struts, especially after installing the Bilstein 5100 shock kit on GM Trucks.
2 years ago I installed the Bilstein 5100 shock upgrade on my 2017 GMC Sierra. Overall, I've been extremely happy with the kit. The upgrade in ride quality and stiffness makes it ride like a truck should. However after about 30k miles, it has developed a clunking noise in the front struts. After doing research, I determined that the issue is caused by using the shock shaft nuts supplied by Bilstein instead of the GM OEM nuts. They are a different design and allow for play in the suspension travel.

2014 Chevy. Same issue. Going to try adding a washer also. Thanks for the video!
I still have the OEM top strut bolts. Just to confirm the switch, all I have to do is compress spring using a large curb, take off bilstein provided nut, add OEM nut and tighten to spec?
Did you notice any noises when driving on flat roads or mostly when turning and or articulating the suspension?
I think I may have the same issue.
If youre lifting it more than 1.75" with this taller shock you will also need larger upper control arms installed so that your stock upper ball joints dont bind and prevent any travel.
Thanks this solved my issue. While on the subject what notch or setting do you have your Bilsteins?
Mine are actually on the highest setting.
Sorry for the late reply!
How comfortable are they on the highway roads and city streets? Are they harsh and unbearable?
What size washer did you use?
Don't remember. I just took the nut to lowes and matched up a stainless washer.@@ryanbrown1350
@@AmokofI wouldn’t say harsh. But they are stiffer. So if your approach is a more “car like” ride . This isn’t the answer. If you need a level, and or you just want a better longer lasting shock especially if you tow occasionally this is for you.
