  • In this video I upgrade to Bilstein B8 5100 Rear Shock Absorbers for AT4 & Trailboss (24-309516) Installed with existing Air Lift Load Leveling Bags
    Install boot up or down?
The Bilstein label on the shock body should be upright in the correct orientation. If your shocks have been installed with the stickers on upside down they should be flipped the other way.

I put these on my 2012 Silverado Z71. Leveled out the front, and added a little stiffness to the rear when towing the camper. I have over a 100,000 miles on them, they still feel like the day I put them on. If I can ever find an RST with max tow, I'll put them on that truck too.

I put the Hellwig helper springs on the back of my Silverado and it only works when towing and I must say it really works. My truck drives the same down the road as it did without them and I feel a great improvement when towing my camper. When you put a load on the back they start to work.

I replaced OEM shocks and struts on my 2017 Ram 1500 with Bilstein 5100 and I wasn’t impressed at all. The idea was to do levelling at some point since these (front) are hight adjustable and install 35s one day. Since I still had my original tires I kept it at the factory setting-no lift. I was expecting to have the same ride quality as OEM shocks. What I got instead was a stiffer ride especially in the front and that’s about it. Two years later I had a strut rod go through a strut mount on driver side which caused problems removing it because a spring had to be cut. They also had a lot of surface rust on them for being just two years on this truck. The OEM ones didn’t have that much surface rust.
Aside from having that option of adjusting hight and being able to level it you are not getting anything out of Bilstein 5100 and I’m not exaggerating. At least this is what I got on my truck. The OEM shocks are better tuned for the size and the weight of Ram 1500 truck. This is my opinion.
I ended up getting a pair of Rancho RS 9000 XL 2.5” strut set with springs and strut mounts and ability to adjust my ride comfort by using a valve (1-9 setting) that comes with shocks. Setting one being the softest and 9 being firmest.
Waaaay better option and waaay better ride quality. I’m currently on setting 5 and it feels like I’m riding on OEM. I’ll try it at setting 3 to see if it makes any difference.
Rear shocks are still Bilstein 5100 and I can tell the difference. I think I’ll be replacing these with RS 9000 XL as well probably and having them dialled at setting 5 or 7 depending on a load.
Some trucks come from the factory with Rancho shocks HOWEVER they are not the same as Rancho RS 9000 XL. They are valved differently! GM trucks are not really known for the “Cadillac” ride quality so that’s why they installed these soft - bouncy shocks to compensate for a stiff ride.
The aftermarket RS 9000 XL come with a valve that you can adjust yourself depending on what you want out of them.
Bilstein 5100 might be good for you but I wasn’t impressed at all. They didn’t give me anything more than OEM gave me in the first place.

These are the exact same shocks/struts combo I have on mine (no air bags, tho). When I did the rears (first) the "jelly butt" feel with axle hop and jitter was reduced big time. Less jarring, slightly firmer, but the overall the feel is smoother with more control. In the cold they are stiffer...but, after driving they smooth out. FWIW - Bilstein is pronounced "Bill Stine". So, many say "Bill Steen" which is wrong. I called the company to verify it when a commenter on my channel decided to stir up some drama -- he prob still lives with his mom and pee's the bed. Hahaa! Anyways, great video...these are premium shocks and def an upgrade to those weak Ranchos. Nice work.

I added both front and back B 5100s and leveled on my GMC 2024 2500 Ultimate. I also added Mickey Thomson Legend EXP tires, 295/65/20
It drives smooth but now it seems to float around on the road and the steering is much more “Loose.”

I actually much prefer the ride of the RS5000x. I found the Bilstein 5100 set to be too "bouncy". I like that in my women. I do not like that in my truck. The Ranchos are much more settled and a tighter ride control. So, IMHO the B5100 are not better than RS5000x. That said, any new shock is better than any old worn out shock. Remember, a shock does not have to be leaking to be worn out. Over time the oil shears and the internal valves errode - leading to loose shock.

I upgraded my Ford F-150 factory shocks with rancho and the right one blew out after about a year and the only trailer that I pull only has a tongue weight of about 350 lb. And no real off-roading. AutoZone did warranty them for me so that was nice I'll see how long they last now. I went ahead and put airbags on just to help level out while I am towing.

Based on what I could find it did not seem like these would change the capacity, just wanted to confirm if you found anything.

You can. I didn’t since we don’t often salt the roads where I live. It gets too cold for salt to be effective. We use sand. There is a healthy wax barrier on my frame right from the factory, but some shops do offer an oily spray as an extra barrier. You can probably find someone in your area. Some go the extra mile and get their product into the drainage channels inside your door cavities too. Sorry I don’t have a recommendation to use

@@Donslife Anything compared to a worn out shock is a huge difference, but most viewers come here trying to decide between Bilsteins and other entry level shock options like the fox 2.0, ranchos, icons, etc. Specifically I was interested in the difference between a digressive piston in the Bilsteins and a linear piston like the Foxes. And for the digressives that means that different input shaft speeds result in different compression. So at a minimum you needed to hit that speed bump at 10 and at 30mph. You would also need to compare the dive under braking, body roll when turning. Washboard conditions will be harsher with a digressive and smooth with a linear, but big hits should be the same. Also a bottom out test would have been nice to measure the stroke at different vehicle speeds when hitting a speed bump. What speed could you go without bottoming? Likewise you could hit a jump and find out what speed you could go without topping out. So, yeah, I don’t think you reviewed the shock hardly at all other than saying it feels good.

I apologize if you find the video misleading or misrepresentative. I'm not arguing with your points or concerns. The video is a follow-up the many changes this truck has gone through. Since the installation of the front 5100's, I have been inundated with questions and requests to replace the rears and show how it can be done. I held off. I also mention in the video that the Air Lift Bags make it difficult to establish what the exact difference will be. The Rancho's that I replaced were less than 2 yrs old and not worn out from what I could tell. This was never meant to be a full-scale review video or to compare against other aftermarket options. It is intended to share how easy the installation is for a DIY-type consumer and sharing my anecdotal experience with the change.

That's not an upgrade, just a change from a vehicle specific tuned off-road shock to a generic highway shock. To each his own.
