  • Hi there! In this video I go over the progression of being able to roller skate backwards. Specifically geared towards the TikTok crossover style that we have seen recently become so popular. Some of the most important points I address in this video are:
    1. Wear Protective Gear
    2. Check the area you will be skating in for tripping hazards.
    3. Be comfortable Skating forwards first
    I then go into some moves that help you get comfortable eventually being able to do the crossover walk. If you have any questions please feel free to ask. I am happy to help.

    I appreciate the fact that you told beginners to ensure that they have a strong foundation skating forward. This is not emphasized enough. It's so important that you master things before moving on. Thanks for this great video!

      @@Tani.Coy.RollerMama Yes! I'm a part of a few roller skating groups online, and I've seen so many posts of people hurting their tailbones from trying things like spins when they can barely skate forward. It's so dangerous, especially when these injuries are likely to haunt them later on. Thanks again for your video!

      I just started skating and just watching different videos just for references, and I’m like oh that’s cool. But right now I’m just trying to keep my ass from falling. I’m an impatient person but I know that for this, I have to take baby steps. Told my family that in a year’s span, I will be good. I’m definitely not rushing it

      @@Tani.Coy.RollerMama ... Yep. Myself and several times. I currently have pain in a shoulder, in my left ribs and I've got a broken finger or something similar, called "mallet finger". BUT.. Today I'm starting making backwards crossovers. The thing is not to hurry (I'm telling to myself). I learn a little every day I go out skating, so better safe than sorry. I also think that I should have started learning sooner in my life. I mean that an old man like me (54) can perfectly skate and to make a lot of movements, but it's very painful to learn from the beginning how to make every single one, so it's harder for us.

    People that have been teaching for a long time just don't know how to talk to beginners, precisely because they don't remember what it's like to be a beginner. So many tutorials I've seen by that well-known teachers don't help me at all and they keep repeating information that just doesn't help. You're the first person I've heard acknowledge this, thanks! I've been trying to get better at backwards skating and unlocking the weave for several months. This video has the most helpful tips I've heard do far! Thank you for making this video. I love the top down view, it's the only way I know how to understand what the teacher is saying! Question, when you say weight on the outside leg, which leg do you mean the right leg or the left leg (from in the clip you showed?) Thanks🛼💖

    • @Tani.Coy.RollerMama
      @Tani.Coy.RollerMama  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much for such a huge compliment. It’s hard for me to explain which leg because it’s alternating. But the outside leg is the same leg attached to the hip that is moving outward. That would be where the weight is. This helps with creating the momentum you need to move. If that doesn’t help you can ask me more. 🦋💜

    You are Gold! Excellent instruction. Detailed. I grew up on skates. Approximately 20 hours weekly for 11-12 years. Then motorcycles took over. Then girls. Then kids... I bought a pair of new skates (cuz I haven't had any for decades) 3 days ago tomorrow. The snow and rain have kept them unpacked. But tomorrow is sunshine so I finally get to strap these on and groove!
    I turn 70 in a few months and the doctors want to remove and/or replace everything. I plan to use skating to show them where to shove those ideas!!!

    At first I thought she was overexplaining, but I realize that it's people who underexplain how things work that end up being bad teachers. So although my attention span wasn't that great for watching this all the way through, I realize that she probably is the best person to learn this from.

      The easiest tip I can give is to put your toes together inwards, with the backs turned outwards... stand up strong and straight... then start lifting up each foot a TINY bit off the ground one at a time and you'll start moving backwards slowly. Trust me there's no way you can't move doing this. Just pick up your foot one by one and keep them in that pigeon toe position and you'll start moving backwards then add more power and speed xx

      @@Tani.Coy.RollerMama Many thanks for answering, that means a lot for me, as it is hard. I love the process though. I was progressing. but I found a problem (4 days ago). To tell it simple: I found one of my break pads (excuse my English) on the floor. It was surely because I had them very loose, very "unscrewed", to be able to stop sooner. I think that you get what I mean. Pffff--- The threads get Wrong then, and you have to make the right threads again. Well... threre is a way (expensive: to get an expensive tool to remake the threads... or you can just make like I've done: To buy just the screw and to cut it with a shaw in the middle and then just trying it inside and outside (WD40 helps) till it runs all of the way.. II worked fine and cheap ;). In any case, I ruined one of my break pads threads, so I've bought a new set. On the meanwhile, I'm rolling with just one break pad.

    I notice a lot of people skating on tennis courts. Is that the best surface other than a roller rink?

    • @Tani.Coy.RollerMama
      @Tani.Coy.RollerMama  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am so glad and thank you! Tennis courts if they are taken care of well, can be very smooth and don’t have cracks like sidewalks or other outdoor surfaces do (although we have a few local tennis courts that are in bad condition and there are cracks in those). The surface is also much more comfortable to fall on then pavement. It can be softer and safer in my opinion. Some courts do not allow roller skating so it is just going to depend on how it is for you locally. We always give priority to tennis players though and will leave if people show up who want to play since that is what they are there for. Hope you find one and can try it out! 💜🦋
