People seem to be getting pretty upset about this video. First, let me just state that there is data that backs up every claim I've made. This isn't a subjective video, I remain objective and discussed the drawbacks which I observed. Second, I own a 2014 Subaru STI. Clearly I don't think it's bad enough that it kept me from buying one. If you've watched my review on the car, you'd understand I think it's great (th-cam.com/video/_xcwf0DuoJ4/w-d-xo.html). Before taking things so personally, step back and think to yourself, what did I say that wasn't true? I hope everyone is having a great day, and happy holidays!
+Engineering Explained I enjoyed your video. It provided solid information on the STI, WRX and RS. I especially enjoyed your detailed information on the outdated STI engine platform. Good Job on this one.
+Engineering Explained Dude, dont let the haters get to you. As an STI owner yourself, I hope you realize there many diehards out there who will just trash anyone who talks bad about their car. Personally your video played a major factor in my decision of my recent car purchase, and I decided to go and preorder the new RS. Keep doing what you're doing man, keep up the great work.
+Engineering Explained I agree that what you say about the WRX is true but my remarks concerning the STi are also accurate. I just want people to see the full picture and have enough information to decide for themselves. You imply that a car with a torque band in the upper RPM range is inferior. If that were always the case then the new GT 350 would also be an inferior car to the standard Mustang GT. I do like your videos and appreciate when you explain things based on your engineering background. I don't like when you use that background to imply that one car should be purchased over another because of X, Y, or Z. I realize you are an intelligent person and probably do this for ratings on You Tube. Both you and I know that it will cause quite a stir among some crowds. Keep up the good videos! I like the information you provide on the workings of the various components. Happy holidays!
+Pretzil295 pffft. That's what they always have been. They're hopped up versions of an economy car (Impreza). Just like the Evo is a hopped up Lancer, the Golf R and GTI are hopped up Golf's, and the Focus ST and RS are hopped up Focuses. This isn't anything new.
Not sure why u got so many thumbs down just stating facts. I have a supra twin turbo and I can give u 20 reasons not to buy it lol. Until u actually own one u don't know what all the negative aspects are of a car.
As someone who has owned an '05 STi, an '08 STI, and an '09 WRX, I've got to say that this video is pretty spot on. In '03-'04 there weren't many cars out there at the STi's price point (excluding the EVO) that could touch a STi in terms of performance. The '05 STi came out with a slew of improvements over the '04 that really made it "the" car to have and I absolutely LOVED mine. My '08 was much more usable than my '05 but had lost a bit of its punch (heavier, longer gear ratios vs the '05) and while I really liked that car, I must admit that I was starting to long for better seats, interior materials, and performance for my $45k CDN. I tracked both cars and upgraded them to stage 2+ power levels (plus suspension improvements), so they were certainly used as intended! Around the same time my wife got an '09 WRX and acceleration wise, it was nearly every bit as quick as my '08 when it was stock, but still lacked the strong brakes, handling, and great 6spd transmission. What I find so disappointing is that the new STI is still virtually the same car as my '05! Yes the chassis is stiffer, the power curve a little more refined, but it still has pathetic fuel economy, interior noise, mediocre seats, and cheap materials. The rest of the world has moved on (including the WRX) yet the STI remains relatively stagnant. It's still a good car, especially with the price drops over the years, but the STI has a LOT more competition out there than it used to and, at least for me, it's harder to justify buying one now than even just 8 years ago. I still love my Subaru's (have a Forester now instead of an STI) but my next performance car may very well be from another brand.
Digitalfiendscom i have to say i loved my 03 evo 8 yeah it was modded and had to get rid of it cause the roads in philly r so bad it destroyed my rims and suspension then i had a 14 evo x and i didn't enjoy it as much kept stock that may have been one reason then i traded it and bought a 17 sti limited and i love it and it being stock still it just seems a lot more fun than the evo x but i still miss the evo 8
Watch the video again. He did say no one buys the STI for the mileage. He said that for the street, the WRX gives you all the STI does. Re the gas mileage, he talked about the range. This comment makes no sense. Yes, the STI is a great car; for some people, the WRX delivers same.
@@tomrakusan1179 I had both. (YEs i sold both due to a bigger family). WRx is definitely good in mpg but that's it, in my opinion. I daily both cars and i would give it to the STI. Better drivability, shifting, handling, sound, and not losing power after 4K, instead, gaining more at that rpm, and of course, the sound. I feel much more comfortable with the STI than the WRX. Again, i had both my vehicles mostly stock, (yes, i know, "who keeps their wrx and sti stock", but at that time, i wanted to keep my vehicle as long as possible without having going back and forth to the shop due to mods...and yes, it is a boxer it will blow up regardless joke.... i get it), and i would choose my STI over the WRX anytime any day.
This dude is spot on. I recently owned a 2015 STi for the last year+. I loved the car but there were a few things that ultimately made me sell it. What I didn't like: The gas mileage is terrible. I was in the 16.xx mpg for a lot of the time. A newer engine could address this. The car is weak until 3000rpm with the turbo lag. The wind noise/road noise is terrible. Long highway trips on holidays were annoying. The base sti Enkei rims had paint chips/cracks on almost all four rims. The hood alignment seemed off, I could see engine components just by peeking at the right angle. I had the short shifter and when pair with the gear ratio's, it just never seemed to be in the right gear. The car is always ready to go 100% which can be good or bad. You do get noticed more with the wing. I got pulled over for 3 speed violations in a year. The car does not like going the speed limit. My insurance went way north. Living in Texas, I felt like I was wasting the AWD with all the long straight roads. Moving back to Minnesota would have been way different. I did have to replace all four tires because of AWD after one became flat from a nail. Most other people will hate driving with you! My girlfriend and family were always saying my car made them sick. There's a lot of neck jerking going on. Then there's the $600 payment, if you finance it be prepared. Added all up, car note+insurance+gas+maintenance+mods = rent/house payment for many people. What I liked: It's an extremely raw car that loves to be pushed like all the reviews mention. The grip made me feel like a better driver than I really am. The rumble from the boxer is great. It has great hydraulic steering. The dark gray metallic paint was great when waxed and paired with window tint. The LED headlamps were awesome at night. The base WRX has halogen. It has an amazing transmission. My is300 5speed is garbage compared to the 6mt in the Sti. What an awesome gearbox that is the epitome of bulletproof. I thought the build quality was excellent all around except for the hood alignment. The Subaru drivetrain feels like it will last forever. It has extremely good resale value. My Subaru dealer gave me a fair trade price. Other dealers who don't know about Sti will try to screw you in my experience. You can't put a price on fun factor, and this car was loads of fun. A car you glance back at every time you leave it. If I was to do it all over, I would have got a hatchback if they offered it. I should've bought the WRX but test drove the Sti first. I will definitely consider another if they bring a Hatchback 2.0 FA Sti to the states. The VW Golf R looks great from the inside, but I wish VW had a better reliability track record and also that it had real Quattro instead of the FWD based Haldex.
Dude i laughed so hard where you said "It does not like going the speed limit" Reminds me of my last VW GTI. You could never cruise with it. It just wanted to be pushed. Buying the 2016 STI regardless.
I think the STI has been so "stale" because it hasn't had any legitimate competition in years. The new Focus RS I think will finally push Subaru to give a damn.
***** Not really. It's better on paper, but in practice the STI seems to perform better, particularly long-term. There's a reason the STI seems to sell better, and why the Mitsubishi is dropping the Evos.
+badivukXforzaXpro Compared to a WRX, yes, but not to a STI. I tried finding both at one point before I imported a Skyline instead and both were around the same price.
+iedei STi is a much more practical car. Was able to fit a entire 6'+ Christmas tree in the trunk with the trunk closed. The fold down seats helped and the car just sounds really cool too. My cars always ready to rumble.
***** Personal anecdotes don't count for much. I've heard many people say the exact opposite as you. Some people like the look of one car over the other too - personal preference is why competition exists and has nothing to do with what is actually better. If everyone always went for what's best, there wouldn't be any competition. That being said... why else do you think Mitsubishi is dropping the Evo? On that note, Mitsubishi is not failing. Their revenue is increasing and they have a pretty solid market in Asia.
Yea I am not really happy with how their cars are changing. The 6th gen Legacy was a great looking car with strong performance. The 7th gen was bland and ugly and even tho they upgraded the 3.0r to a 3.6r they ruined it by dropping the manual transmission. The 8th gen looks a bit better but against still no manual transmission option in most models. The Impreza also continues to get blander looking. In the 4th gen Forester XT they have bumped up the power and torque but now you can't get a manual transmission. Instead you are stuck with the rubbish CVT transmission. Kind of defeats the purpose of the car doesn't it?
Lol , Yea they are! Can't they understand all the points stated are based off ownership and Facts!? haha , Fanboys will be fanboys , and act like the STI is such an flawless car.
Enjoyable honest review. Don't let people with internet rage worry you. Your opinions seem to be based on solid facts, data, and first hand experience.
They need an FA25. When the old WRX went from 2.0 to 2.5L things got serious. An FA25 making ~350-400HP in the STI would help defend it against the likes of the Focus RS and Golf R. If this thing has an EJ beyond next year it will be dead in the water.... only the most dedicated Subie fanbois will be able to rationalize it.
There's been rumor that the next sti will come with the FA20 and two electric motors making about 340+? Don't quote me on this though as that's what I roughly remember from the rumors. I just hope they don't ditch the manual on it.
hio There are some electric motor equipped manual cars, mainly from Honda. I think the XV Crosstrek hybrid comes in stickshift too. And there are a lot of hybrids with dual clutch transmissions that have electric motors. They can be done right. Truthfully maybe that would be the way to go for Subaru, though I would be more weary of the weight such a system would add over anything else.
Theo Morrow Who cares? Anyone who cares about getting value for their dollar, and not spending Z06 gas money for WRX performance. I can understand high fuel consumption but it has to come with some upside. There are cars getting 50% better gas mileage with the same performance.
Yeah its always going to be expected. People now are complaining about the EJ25 but I guarantee that the moment a new engine goes into the STi, its gonna have the Evo X effect of “not a real STi”
All these reasons are the exact points (minus road noise, which I didn't notice to be a huge problem) are the reasons I went with 16 WRX over an STI. Sure I sacrificed a half litre of displacement, but that low-end torque is amazing. The FA20DIT is an awesome platform to work with
+Mactastic The FA20 is phenomenal, aside from the rev-hang issue from the factory, that car is exceptional. Lot of bang for the buck. Fast, efficient, AWD, yes!
+Engineering Explained Yes absolutely, I do agree with your point on the rev hang, that's definitely a weird issue. Like the gentleman above me said, awesome video. I also enjoy the engineering videos. I look forward to more! Good work!
+DazdnCofuzd I think it may have something to do with the FA being untested in motorsports. Overseas they use the EJ207 in STi's (same motor in my buds 98 wrx oddly enough), but I doubt we'll see the FA in an STi until it's had a couple years in market to work out the little bugs. Or maybe they'll just have ringland issues again :p.
+4SeasonPro you lose all warranties if you actually drive your car pretty quickly. I am already at 40k mile on my WRX and for a year I hardly ever drove it. I was almost 30k on the first year.
Tiny Turbo I volunteered to drive my friends and family everywhere I could lol. Thats with 2 month repair @ 17k miles when I got a spun rod bearing too. stupid oil pump
Mostly they be paying for the badge and the exhaust note (who doesn't like the exhaust note of an STI). The idea of getting worse mpg than a Corvette and drowning in turbo lag is gross
Sam Shi when in the boost, yes.. but when the turbo is not creating boost like highway cruising they do not contribute to fuel consumption or negligible amounts. The STI consumes so much fuel because of weight, it's drive train and downforce... but mainly because they have not advanced their motor technology. This is why the WRX makes good power, but still a substantial increase in fuel economy. The future STI motor has no excuse to only make 22mpg. A v8 for Christ sake makes 450hp and still gets better MPG
Sam Shi I am, that is all I was saying with my original post. I have confidence the next gen STI will be perfect for my needs. Even if it keeps the same 305hp, while increasing fuel economy I will be happy. I think they will make the next STI about 330-340 with better power throughout the band with a better turbo. The STI basically just needs an intake and tune to pull the power band to what it should have been from the factory. We will see. I don't actually plan on buying an STI until 2019. I am hoping they add an electronically adjustable damper system too. That would be incredible!!
Sam Shi i like the WRX, but at that point I would go for something else more performance oriented. I am looking to have my cake an eat it too. I expect subaru to make an even better car in 2019 so we will see, man.
I just bought a 2018 wrx and i'm 38. The car is fast, firm and feels like a brute on the road. I can't imagine how much more hardcore the sti is. Still glad with my purchase
My rebuttal to each of your reasons. 1. The engine does have more lag than the cars you mention but all of the cars you mention Mustang Eco Boost, Golf R & WRX were beaten in C&D Lightning Lap. Why are you buying a performance car? Shouldn't performance be the primary factor? 2. Your second reason was turbo lag. For more on this checkout the dyno charts at Road and Track comparing the 2 cars, The truth is the STi is better in the very low RPM ranges and the very high. It is the middle where the WRX shines but I would argue the lower gearing in the STi more than offsets the dyno graphs. If you use the aggressive gearing when driving the STi you will not be bothered by the lag. Again I can point to many test that show better 0-60 and quarter mile times than the WRX. 3. Better fuel economy...This is a valid point but how many people driving STi's or any performance car is actually concerned over fuel economy. It is not terrible, just not as good as some of the newer engines. 4.No hatch was on purpose, they still just do not sale as well as the sedan here in the US. 5.Interior noise levels are high but even you mention that it does not bother you. I would love to see that list of cars that weigh less with similar interior volume and trunk space. 6.THE WRX - Only buy a WRX if you want the inferior car nothing other than the motor is comparable. Start trying to build a WRX to match an STi with the money you save if you think I am wrong. Even if you add enough upgrades to be faster and handle as well you are still missing the better steering, DCCD, better gear box, brakes, and tires not to mention the durability of those components. You would be better off buying the STi and building it's motor. Weight is insignificant if it does not equate to better performance. I hear the STi is lighter than a GTR and the new Z06. 7.Focus RS - This may be the best reason you gave but this has yet to be determined. It will however take a few years to see how the Ford does in the market and if it will even last. Remember Subaru stopped selling the hatchback for a reason, low sales. I do agree Subaru needs to step up to the plate and give the STi a new engine and I suspect they will soon, which may be the best reason to wait. The fact is the Subaru STi is the performance leader in this class so the competition has not given them a reason to do the engine upgrade.
+casiotechI I guess everyone must be stupid and incompetent? That is why the STi won all of the comparison tests. All of these people with all of their experience must not know anything. We are comparing stock cars here! There is no need to compare anything else because the car that wins at that point is the one owned by the person who spends the most money. Stock for stock the STi is a better car, sorry that gets your panties in bunch but its been proven test after test. It does not make the WRX a bad car just a less capable car than the STi off the showroom floor. Take a couple deep breaths and calm yourself. Stress is bad for your health.
Nobody buys subaru wrx sti for fuel economy reasons, but it is still a factor. It is a competitive world, why would you buy the sti when you can buy any one of the other competitors and have better fuel economy? Like I said, nobody chooses the car for its fuel economy, but it still doesnt mean its NOT a factor. The technology exists to improve fuel economy, it just hasnt been applied yet.
Vlican Yep, couldn't be more right but I said I'd rather buy an older car tbh a focus rs or an evo 8. It's a no brainer to me. However in the evo 8 you don't get half the new shit you get in the focus. Not to mention maintenance
+cheapo911 Focus RS desires to compete in the same segment if you will as the STI. STI is the current champ and the Focus RS still has much to prove. The 2010 RS500 is the closest thing we have since reviews of the new RS are not out yet. I think we can agree while an awesome car, it is not the equal of an STI in all areas.
This video actually aided in my decision. I initially was looking at the Evo because it's going out and I've always had a soft spot for them. A buddy of mine suggested the STi, so my research began as to which would be the better buy. Since it was going to be a daily driver, I wanted something dependable and capable year round (I have a Mustang as a hobby car). I then started looking at the WRX and noticed how comparable the 2 really are. Their times are extremely close. Being that the turbo spools lower in the revs it actually was the better choice for me as I'm in the city often. The WRX does fall off near the top, but it's extremely livable. 7k miles and I have no regrets and that's coming down from an F-350. In combined driving, I'm getting 27 mpg avg. and that's with playing with the go-fast pedal too. This video was a great tool, and gave me some much needed things to consider before even going to the dealer.
+Why Is Water Wet Turbo lag is really common among the turbocharged cars. Even with high performance cars there are still turbo lag it's just too fast for you to notice
You really won't notice the lag unless you're specifically looking for it. If you're in a track environment, you're not going to see it. If you're traveling behind someone doing 45 and you're in 6th gear, yeah you're going to see it... downshift a gear and disappear.
Subaru made a huge error just cutting and pasting the drivetrain from the previous STi to the new model. They thought with Mitsubishi retiring the Evo that there would be less competition so they took a shortcut. The Focus RS will be about the same price and have more power and refinement next year. I don't know anyone who would buy an STi over that.
+GalvatronTypeR Ford has been KILLING it with the Boost game and has every competitor is blushing and Ford are very conservative with stock tuning, meaning a custom 93 tune can crank those EcoBoost engines way up while still being in the safe zone. When a Full size F-150 EcoBoost can run a 12.5 with just a tune and no bolt ons... that is crazy lol Can't imagine what the tuning community will do with the RS considering the EcoBoost stang has the same engine and with a tune and bolt ons run's 11's
+GalvatronTypeR I couldn't agree more. The only reason I didn't get the STI over the WRX was the old drivetrain. If the RS had bee close to available at that time I would have without a doubt gotten an RS. Now I will enjoy my WRX until the refreshed STI comes out likely.
+Jason Davis yeah dude and I'm pretty sure Ford might be offering in house tunes for their ecoboost engines for those who wanna get more aggressive so there would be no warranty issues. They are killing it. With the success of the ecoboost f150, and ecoboost mustang, I'm sure this will be a huge success for them as well. Unless Subaru gets its head back in the game, I don't see any reason people would go for the STI unless it sees a major overhaul really soon.
+M Coop They are, they confirmed it beginning of this year, plus they copyrighted "EcoBeast" this year too so that is probably the tuning platform name. I don't see them making the tunes as aggressive as third party tunes though while being covered under warranty. I have a custom SSI PS 93 tune on my F150 and it is STUPID how much more power just a tune adds with 22psi vs 12psi stock. Plus Ford just unveiled the new 3.0 Twin Turbo V6 that will debut in the 2017 Lincoln MKZ with 400hp and 400tq on 87 stock tune.
you've literally covered every aspect of this that I've been telling my friends and why the 2015 WRX is the superior one of the two Subarus to buy. Well done sir, well done!
The great thing about car enthusiasts is that despite any drawbacks their prefered or favorite make and model they manage to go around them and make them work. Just look at all the nice videos of sports cars here in youtube.
Great points Jason! Very true about the STI. The old sound of these is great but the new WRX definitely seems like the more compelling choice for all of the reasons you mentioned. And judging by the end of the video it sounds the the Focus RS offers all the things you're looking for Jason...do I sense one in your future? :D
Thank you for being one of the thinkers. The one thing no one else talks about with cars like this is mileage. Face it buying a car like this means for most that this will be your only car. And being able to get to work with out a fuel stop makes life so much easier. And unless you have a strange job or lifestyle, no one does all highway driving. So figure half way between 17-23 like 20 MPG? You are driving a Suburban with a huge wing on it.
All valid points, IMO. Having said that, I drove one (2016 WRX/STi) recently on some Florida back roads and found it to be huge fun when driven aggressively. It is stiff, it is noisy, and you do have to keep revs at the top of the range. But I don't care about any of that. Chucking the thing into nasty, bumpy, off-camber corners produced involuntary howls of joy. Dialing the diff to 70% at the rear makes up for the car's natural tightness, you can steer a bit with your right foot. Not sure I'd ever buy one, but it is a riot when pushed to the limit.
***** I don't like hatchbacks. I was dissapointed when all time sedan impreza somehow became hatchback... People have different tastes. So i don't care if someone is furiuos about something. Subaru should just make both versions...
I love my WRX - I’m averaging 21.5 mpg, always reliable, super fast and fun, take it on any dirt road, up the mountains, plenty of space for 2 adults and a dog. 0 issues mechanically, tires lasting 3 years. Great value. For $21,000 (paid years ago), it’s a steal. And it’s relatively uncommon
100% agree with you. Those are the exact reasons why I'm not buying the 2016 STI, that I was really considering. For $5000 more, I could get a BMW M235i. M235i is slightly faster, way better mpg, good low end torque, and you don't have to sacrifice comfort. Yes, I know M235i isn't a sedan, but I'm also not gonna carry around 4 or 5 grown adults with me all the time, so ya.
However when reviewing the car both Subaruwrxfan and Jason had a blast driving the Sti. You can't put a price on fun factor. The raw sound, steering, brakes, dccd and 800 bucks gets you a Cobb tune that changes the torque curve and gives reliable power. Both the wrx and Sti have pros and cons. You need 7 reasons why not to buy a wrx to be fair.
+Sapient Budgie The only thing I didn't like about the WRX was the rev hang. It's an amazing car. I mean, I'd love it if they offered a hatch of course, but overall it's great.
+Engineering Explained I agree, wrx is a great car. Despite the old technology in the Sti Ej, I enjoy the high revving above 4000rpm. I have a 2014 Audi S4 and truthfully the torque is addicting down low, but I still reach for my Sti keys many days.
+Engineering Explained it seems counter intuitive to post a video giving people 7 reasons why not to buy one of the most unique and fun cars to drive with excellence in automotive engineering. 7 reasons why not to buy a really amazing car? I guess controversy brings traffic to the channel.
+Engineering Explained which one would you choose between a s4 and a 335i im talkin about a b8 vs e90 ? i ve tried to get a video of the this comparaison but cant find one and i like your reviews :) keep up the great work !
I really don't think you can compare the focus RS. The RS is going to blow the subie out of the water but is also going to cost much more and is a limited production car.
+Brennan M Subarus are not exactle the pinnacle of reliability. Also it's a ford. So it's a company releasing cars like it's JDM Nissan and it's 1992? They have the 300ZX, the Silvia, and now even the Pulsar GTIR is coming out. It's a JDM 90s lineup in that company. Saying "it's a ford" vs what? Shitty Japanese companies that can hardly release anything interesting? Maybe ONE or TWO cars on their lineup? Even Subaru now doesn't have the performance pedegree of 90s Mazda, Toyota, or Nissan. It's Ford who does.
+FCFordLord STI and reliable in the same sentence...LOL the STI shortblock can barely support the power that it's given from the factory without blowing up. How are your ringlands by the way?
05 wrx wagon owner 2011 sti sedan owner. really enjoyed your video. was owner of both vehicles before this vid. and i am not butt hurt by it at all. think this is good and valid information.
The FA engine sounds like shit. It sounds like a honda, I'm glad I purchased my 16 STI, it's the last of an era, you'll never hear that good boxer noise out of Subaru. If you want to fix boost lag, get a down-pipe. You're weird if you keep these cars stock.
+Tyler Chilton Down pipes don't help the lag all that much, you really need E85, an up pipe, and the full set up to get it down to WRX status ( I own a stage 2 2015 STI and a 2015 WRX). The twin scroll turbo makes a big difference.
+jinshin85 exactly... you can still have your beloved boxer rumble with UEL headers in your FA20... but it's not recommended... EE has a video on that too
So I just bought a 2015 STI to go with my 350z Nismo. You are insane if you think there is no low end to this car. When looking for a new car I drove tons of cars including a GSR evo, Golf R, 370z, and this car as a ton of downlow power with the gearing it has. Yeah the gas milage is crap, but claiming the download power isn't there is crazy. Are you sure you are not comparing it to your 2014 with the different turbo? The gas milage is kinnda a big deal if it got less than 20mpg. The dealer let me have a 2015 GSR evo for 2 days and that thing maybe got 16mpg, where as the STI gets 22ish for me. If I drove across town in the evo (orlando) half the tank would be gone. That would be acceptable if it was a 500-600HP car. my 2008 Nismo 350z can get 25 on the freeway.
Absolutely correct . I bought a 2016 STi back in February and it def feels strong in the lower rpm range so yeah not sure what he's talking about here either . More than likely he's going off of his 2014 STi , which was the last year of the older body style . The 2015+ have different(quicker)throttle maps than the previous years . Btw I'm also avg 21.3mph which is better than the 19mpg that Subaru says this car gets .
I agree with the claim "visiting the pump often" , coming from a 2014 2.0 GC with 319hp / 378 tq I was shocked at how much worse the gas mileage is. I commute 60 miles a day for work and I only had to fill my GC up once a week and that was with some seriously hard driving and I've owned two GC in the last 9 years. I bought the STI for the AWD in the NY winters and I am actually not too satisfied. I should have went with the new WRX to suite my current DD needs. I guess I'll wait for the next gen.
Brandon Eubanks And so what if it depreciates? Lots of cars do that. Still doesn't change the fact that it's better than the STI. Oh, and citation needed on the "all your dealer visits" assertion.
There will FOREVER be an argument about cars with "turbo lag" or cars with "very little lag but no top-end grunt". You cannot fully be happy. Direct injection technology helps with response in new cars, but in terms of car reviews, there will NEVER be someone happy with 'little lag and a lot of top end grunt'. Very little turbo cars will ever offer 1.) Low end grunt/response with little lag and 2.) a top end power band that really uncorks with upgrades and a tune. You have to sacrifice one or the other. After having a turbo car previously that had a smaller turbo, response down low was immense and the torque was insane (especially with tune), but it'd fall on it's face after 5500 rpm. Almost felt like a diesel sometimes. So, YES the WRX is more 'economical', and responds better (FA20 is a darn good engine), but anyone who has seen the dyno runs of these cars will agree it's laughable how hard the power falls off after 5500. It'll only get worse with a tune. The STI isn't about that. It's like the older turbo cars that you have to run hard and rev more to get the power out of. It depends on the user. As for the Focus RS, that may actually be the car with both little lag, and top end grunt. The stock K16 turbo that comes with it will offer far more top end power than the puny KO4 in the ST (I had a VW GTI previously so my stock KO3 was even 'punier'). Should be fun to see what can be done to it.
the WRX is the car for people that want a daily commuter thats comfortable and good on gas mileage. The STI is more for the people that want a car that can be daily driven and also taken to the track or twisting back roads. It all depends on what the driver is looking for. If I lived in the city I would go with a WRX. However I live in the country with lots of backroads so the STI for me is the better option for what I as the driver is looking for. All valid points and great video man.
I totally see what hes getting at, I own a 2015 STI and I love mine because I love Subarus, people who buy these know what they're getting into, and know what great cars they are when modified. Not everyone that buys a sports car is looking for all out practicality and fuel economy. The focus rs is going to be great and all competition wise, but in my opinion its just another of the million Fords on the road.
I came here expecting to get angry about someone whining about a performance car, but all of these were excellent points. I never would have expected there to be so many drawbacks based on the price and modern engineering, plus you made some great points about the WRX being not far off of the STI.
+Jack Couldrey I wish the cost of the BRZ was lower, because the supercharge kits they have now make a BRZ really worth considering. Put putting down the same cost as WRX then adding on another 6k for the full kit+install is a little steep.
+ncs productions so what? Have you driven in tight and twisty mountain roads? Its not all about horsepower. You do also realise that theres turbos and superchargers for those that want more power?
+JIMmusic No, its not all about peak power, you are correct on that and, lets be honest, 200hp is still enough power to have fun. But Torque is very important and the engine in the GT86/FRS/BRZ is just pathetic in that regard in both its overall figure and delivery. If they [Toyota/Subaru] returned the engine to have lower peak power but more Torque, the car would come alive - but straight out the showroom its just slow with crappy tyres.
If I made my decision about whether to buy the WRX vs. the STi in the same way I was deciding whether to buy a Prius or Civic, I would agree with what you say...but that's not what it's about. For me it also started as a rational decision process, but strange as it may sound, it became an emotional one... I had never driven either and I had gone through all the pros and cons of both and determined the WRX was the smarter buy like you mention in this video... but then I drove them...First time I test drove both, I wanted the STi. Period - that's what the STi did to me - I fell in love with it. Then the second time I test drove both (I needed to make sure) - didn't even need to leave the dealer parking lot - it had to be the STi. I have a feeling people that laud the WRX so much over the STi haven't test driven both back to back...I love the WRX too, I just love the STi more...every time I drive the car I still can't wipe the shit eatin grin off my face.
I typically don't respond to (heated) discussions such as this one but I felt compelled to provide my opinion. In 2002 I wired a deposit to the Tampa dealer when I learned of Subaru's plan to (finally) import the STI. I was, at that point, wrapping up my eighth and (what I thought) final deployment of my 22 year Air Force career in Iraq. I needed a reliable new car to assist in job searches (as well as a little present to myself in completing said deployments with all my limbs intact). I took ownership of my beautiful silver 2004 (in Sept 2003) I and I never regretted the decision. That car and I have been through a lot since then (12 more Air Force years, four more deployments and two divorces) but I will NEVER give her up for any price.Having said that, the loud cockpit, ride so firm you can literally feel road imperfections through the steering wheel, nervous handling, low-to-moderate speed push (which took me quite a while to dial out), high torque and H.P. bands, and a few other niggling imperfections all took a bit of getting used too (women as a rule DO NOT like riding in the car - which is fine with me). But I wouldn't trade these quirks for any other car. I've been offered a good deal of money for her on many occasions and never succumbed. The car is what it is (as are all STI's), a street legal race car and shouldn't be thought of in any other context. I find it truly ironic that you (and other motoring press) are chastising the car for it's lack of refinement, outdated tech, and brutish handling when I distinctly remember the opposite complaints when Subaru "softened" things a bit for the 2007-2010 models. I'm surprised you didn't complain that it didn't have paddle shifters. I applaud Subaru for staying true to the car's WRC roots even though it now has gobs of sound-deadening, leather interior, driver-distracting displays, etc.The car, simply, is not for everyman. If you want speed, horsepower, tech, easier drivability, and lack of rear spoiler I suggest you sell the STI, gain 50 pounds, age 30 years and get a corvette.
lxlPhantomlxl your on crack he's not talking about the car he's just saying that he doesn't like the hatch backs because the guy in the video was saying it's a drawback that the newer models arnt available in hatch option
this kid is drunk :) who buys a Sti keeps is it stock exhaust manifold lower lip drop it low Cobb tune stage 2 400hp lol no one can touch it's about love u have to have a Sti to understand
Not upset about the video at all. Agreed on pretty much every point. If you want a REALLY light weight and fast vehicle, get an FZ-07 Yamaha. Power to weight ratio 1:5.5. Cost under $7500 out the door.
As someone who owns the same car you're driving in the video, I can agree with issues you bring up. I am excited for the RS and, while it has more power than the STI under the hood, 0-60 times suggest that it will struggle to put that power down. The RS is also a brand new unproven car where the STI, despite its faults, has been around for ages and has a lot of existing support for it. Should be fun to be the matchup once Subaru puts the new FA20 in the STI like they do in Japan.
I dont know if you've done this video already but it would be nice if you did one explaining stage 1 tunes, and access ports, protunes and what not, im getting into cars and wanting to buy a car of my own and do some performance mods and what things like that, it would be really nice to get some clear and thorough info like you always give, yes i know google is there but you explain things so much better than people on forums lol thanks! great vids!
Didn't hear a single good reason to not get an STI...you don't buy a performance awd rally car for quiet, cargo room, mpg...the "lag" and low end torque is cause its set up for balls to the wall not going for groceries...very simple tune adjustments to change that. The worst thing I heard was buying a Ford Focus...really?? Don't get me wrong...I like fords...I've owned different ones mainly mustangs. I would buy Subaru quality and resale value over any ford any day. The depreciation on a ford is pathetic.
To be fair that engine is over a decade old and the cabin is atrocious compares to other cars in it's price range. I do agree that you shouldnt be buying an sti to get groceries but a more efficient engine would really help benefit the sti. The thing is still good but outdated as heck
I'd rather have performance and functionality then looks. Plus I don't care what strangers see on outside anyone who actually knows me is aware of six speed bigger brakes bigger turbo stiffened suspention your a poser fake boy
I have 2013 hatchback STI, I love it, but all those claims in the video are true. The only thing I want to add: customization is a must for these cars. Steering wheel and shortshifter transform the feel, pro tune for powerband adjustment, better low end response, feels much quicker overall (even at cobb stage 1). If you go with new exhaust + stage 2, it's a whole new car and it is the STI you want :). Fuel consumption sucks, my car is far noisier with turbo back exhaust, but overall I'm loving this car.
I own a 2015 STI and think this is a very rational eval. but I'm not surprised you've gotten a lot of static. Many owners are brand or model "blind" and think you're attacking a decision they've made and get defensive. It's insecure & silly, but the forums are full of that attitude. You're right about the MPG, it's weak, but I knew that going in. At 12K miles per year, the STI costs me about $435 more in $4 gas than a car getting 20 city, 30hwy, I like it enough that it seems worth it. I also found that when I switched the stock wheels & tires for 17s that had a better offset to move the wheels out some, the Bridgestones I bought were way quieter that those super loud stock Dunlops and I solved the worst part of the cabin noise. I also, like so many of us, did a turboback exhaust upgrade with a conservative protune and gained 40whp over stock, held peak boost at 18psi and reduced lag to the point where I'm tempted to say it's gone. I predict the Focus RS will be a brilliant car and welcome it, but there's always something else coming out that makes choices harder. And that's a really good thing!
This really hits that itch that Top Gear Uk left behind for me. A honest review that's not afraid to show bad sides of the car. Thanks, keep it up and will be subbing your channel for content like this.
I own a 14 Evo X MR and a 19 Sti Sport Tech...Evo X = surgical lazer Sti=chainsaw Both are great but the Evo rotates in corners, the Sti just plows through them. That does bring some fun, not knowing if you're going to hook in or not...
I agree with the engine comments. I have a legacy with the Ej25 as well and it really is last century compared to the direct injection/twin scroll turbos which are common on virtually all other manufacturers' vehicles.
my buddy has got an STI. It's all true. Idk what you thought he was being unfair about. These are well known quirks of the STI. Most of them having to do with an engine thats well out dated.
+filip hellquist im not choosing sides or anything infact my bother has the 2015 sti but in the days of wrc subaru had the likes of richard burns, colin mcrae and peter solberg some one the greatest rally drivers ever and were being made by prodrive compared to mitsubishi's low budget team with the likes of only tommi makkeinen
7 Reasons why you SHOULD buy the 2016 WRX STI(rules of engagement: Only going by what was listed on this post/in the video. Old engine, compared to ford RS, compared to Volkswagen R, cargo space, limited edition hyperblue ).1) The engine design dates back to 2004. It proven to be a great long lasting high performance engine. You'll get many high performance worry free years out of it.2) It's a Subaru. Important vs. a Volkswagen or a Ford. Just look at Consumer reports to know why. Almost every Subaru model is a CR 'Recommended' vehicle. Not so much with V or F. Why spend 40k on a poorly made car?3) Interior space. Try and fit four people into a Golf R or Ford RS (with a taller driver). You can't. Subaru fits four full sized adults. I'm 6-4, my dad who's 6-2, could sit behind me comfortably.4) Visibility. Sat in a Golf R, Ford Focus ST, and a WRX STI. I can see out of the Subaru, not so much with V or F. Can you say 'blind spots'? Plus better view out is not only safer, but much more enjoyable. 5) Interior finish is outstanding. Sat in a hyperblue and a Golf R on the same day. By comparison, the Volkswagen felt stuffy. The Subaru felt just has rich, but had more pop. (Thank you hyperblue accent stitching).6) Vs standard WRX: Better brakes, better shifting. Better interior trim out.7) Hyperblue. Damm it looks good in person. Certainly better than any of the oh-so standard blue, black, white, or red (pretty much the same boring colors available from V or R).
Jason, you're the best. I talk exactly like you to my girlfriend whilst driving - and she hates it!
+Dominic Bradley Haha do you start every car ride with "hello everyone and welcome!" as well?

Digitalfiendscom i have to say i loved my 03
evo 8 yeah it was modded and had to get rid of it cause the roads in philly r so bad it destroyed my rims and suspension then i had a 14 evo x and i didn't enjoy it as much kept stock that may have been one reason then i traded it and bought a 17 sti limited and i love it and it being stock still it just seems a lot more fun than the evo x but i still miss the evo 8
nobody buys an STi for its fuel mileage
Depends what you were driving before 😜
This dude is spot on.
Dude i laughed so hard where you said "It does not like going the speed limit"
Reminds me of my last VW GTI. You could never cruise with it. It just wanted to be pushed.
Buying the 2016 STI regardless.
Lmao sounds like u need a better job if 600 alot for u I love my sti no matter 5he bads it has
lol sounds like you dont know how to be smooth with manuals if you got people feeling sick and a lot of nerk jerking lol
Evos are much rarer and have barley any depreciaton. Evos that are same age as wrx's are worth double.
Is it just me who prefers the look of the old Subaru Imprezas over the other newer subaru's?
They certainly don't build them like they used too
Yea I am not really happy with how their cars are changing.
Kind of defeats the purpose of the car doesn't it?
excellent taste my man. gc8 is still the best looking chassis subaru has ever made imo.
Definitely agree that the old ones are better looking

I just hope they don't ditch the manual on it.
hio Electric motor would be bad juju. I think Subaru is smarter than that. If anything they will just get very aggressive with the FA20.
+future62 I hope so, if they go electric motors it'll be automatic transmission..
hio There are some electric motor equipped manual cars, mainly from Honda.

Good work!
+Engineering Explained Maybe you know or maybe not, why didn't thy put this new engine in the STI? They could of spruced it up to give it more power.
+DazdnCofuzd .. hopefully on the next model! new engine flat 4!

The idea of getting worse mpg than a Corvette and drowning in turbo lag is gross
You missed the chance to call this video, *"7 Reasons Not To Get an STI"*
I want a STI, but if they don't fix the fuel economy by 2019 subaru will not get my money.
Sam Shi Not true.
Sam Shi yeah, I live in DFW. Which, is pretty flat, but actually has quite a few windy roads too.
2 years ago you said sti will get a new engine. hahhaha, what happened now? FWD cars are getting better laptimes than the sti...
Thanks for helping my wife and I make a decision on what new car to purchase. After test driving we definitely went with the 2016 WRX.
+Hauteur723 Congrats on the new car!
This whole video I was saying "Focus RS, Focus RS, Focus RS". Glad you finally said it. Mines on order, hope I can take delivery ASAP!!!
+cheapo911 Nice Dude that things going to be awesome.
+cheapo911 That will be class, but personally id rather buy an evo 8 and spend the rest on upgrades ;)
+Imran Mohammed apples and oranges when comparing a new car to an old one.....
WRX fangirl reporting in: this video is awesome and he did a great job explaining his reasoning. Thanks for the vid!
This thing gets the same fuel economy as my 26-year-old, 2-ton V8 luxury sedan...
+ootdega Yet some people still claim I'm an idiot for "caring about fuel economy."
1 Reason to Buy a WRX STI: It's a WRX STI.
Yes, it is and it is enough for me :-)
Hassan AlBaijan turbo lag
+Why Is Water Wet Turbo lag is really common among the turbocharged cars. Even with high performance cars there are still turbo lag it's just too fast for you to notice
You really won't notice the lag unless you're specifically looking for it. If you're in a track environment, you're not going to see it. If you're traveling behind someone doing 45 and you're in 6th gear, yeah you're going to see it... downshift a gear and disappear.
+why is water wet
As with any other single turbo car, you drive it by RPM.
+GalvatronTypeR exactly... Subaru's been sitting on their STi for far too long... here's hoping some WRX engine tech makes it into a near future STi..
HONESTY IS OVERRATED. IGNORANCE IS BLISS. STI 4 LIFE.
+Dest Droid u rite.
Dropping hatchback and going back to fast sedan subaru is the best thing about it. Rally subaru died when they went for hatchback.
Great points Jason! Very true about the STI. The old sound of these is great but the new WRX definitely seems like the more compelling choice for all of the reasons you mentioned. And judging by the end of the video it sounds the the Focus RS offers all the things you're looking for Jason...do I sense one in your future? :D
+subaruwrxfan Haha, I don't plan on buying one. I drive my STI so little as is (which I'm cool with, I enjoy keeping up with press cars).
Oh wow. It's not hatchback. I love subaru again :D
+Valtra103 you have no idea how furious most people are that they don't have one. It's insane.
*****
I don't like hatchbacks. I was dissapointed when all time sedan impreza somehow became hatchback... People have different tastes. So i don't care if someone is furiuos about something. Subaru should just make both versions...
+Valtra103 agreed..they should make both for each year..I actually prefer a hatch back in these cars..but they both look good
I love my scoobster.
I like your videos, but come on, it's an Subaru WRX STi, there's more than seven reasons to *buy it*
If you buy Subaru for fuel efficiency... you are not petrol head !
+Sapient Budgie S4 is good fun, that supercharger is excellent. :)
The Focus RS starts at 35,730.
They're very similarly priced.
Engineering Explained 10k is not similar to me...
The 2016 WRX STI starts at 34,695
Brent Oslund oh wow I forgot this video said STI. I'm an idiot lol carry on.
i have only one problem with the focus rs, its a ford... sorry matt
+HyperBlue STI FORD = Fix Or Repair Daily
+Kanaric Wow lol wtf.. Chill dude I was joking.. Why so serious bruh? Never heard that one?
+Kanaric Subaru is known to be more reliable than Ford, along with most other brands.
+FCFordLord STI and reliable in the same sentence...LOL the STI shortblock can barely support the power that it's given from the factory without blowing up. How are your ringlands by the way?
05 wrx wagon owner
2011 sti sedan owner.
really enjoyed your video.
was owner of both vehicles before this vid. and i am not butt hurt by it at all.
think this is good and valid information.
I like most of those things you pointed out as negatives. The turbo lack, road noise, etc. all contribute to this being a great raw drivers car.
Exactly there tuner cars for a reason rumble > all day
+Tyler Chilton You do realize that swapping to a UEL header will give you the same boxer rumble sound, right?
+jinshin85 exactly... you can still have your beloved boxer rumble with UEL headers in your FA20... but it's not recommended... EE has a video on that too
My Evo is almost stock and I'm not weird (muffler delete, stage 1 tune).
Basically don't get it if you don't plan to mod the shit out of it.
Can confirm. Own 2015. Plenty of down low torque.
NiL Nine you are used to the low torque of the nissan....
he's talking about the 2017 model, not 2015 model
The 2017 hasn't changed much of anything drivetrain wise. Just interior changes.
I purchased a 2016 Subaru WRX Premium a five days ago and couldn't be happier.
Subaru or Ford . . . . . . . Fakin Subaru of course!
H Solo no ford
2018 mustang gt will smoke this car
ThinkkOps
Until you get to a track, where actual racing happens.
Ford RS? Good luck with the transmission issues.
Alexandre Migneault True.
And the engines breaking I've seen here on you tube !
I'll take the STI over that ford junk any day.
miamicanesfan01 you'll get dragged then. The focus RS will own this car
And it's still better than the STi.
Get over yourself fanboy. The Focus RS shits on this.
You can have your Focus and all your dealer visits along with the massive depreciation.
Brandon Eubanks And so what if it depreciates? Lots of cars do that. Still doesn't change the fact that it's better than the STI.
Oh, and citation needed on the "all your dealer visits" assertion.
Ghost Assassin lol- these newbie subi owners try to avoid the truth at all costs ha ha
All valid points and great video man.
i do indeed like the focus rs
That wing is hilarious.
+StreetSweepa383
Very Boy Racer esque
Oh hai doggy.
screw the ford focus
Yeah, totally won't getting STI cause of that, not because i'm poor and don't have money.
That's why i went with a BRZ.
+Jack Couldrey but 200hp..
+Jack Couldrey nice... 200hp
I have an 2009 WRX I only get about 25 mpg avg. 2015 get 35 mpg?
+iconacie I got 35 on my MPG test. Pretty much best case.
what year if you dont mind me asking
+iconacie '15
Engineering Explained oh okay that make since
+iconacie The 09 does have the oil issue-Id stick with the old Soob till Subaru gets its act together...
If Subaru doesn't have a swift response to the focus rs then the brand might be dead in the near future.
This is not a volume seller. Subaru is doing phenomenally, the RS will not change this (even if STI sales go down).
I really don't like hatchbacks lol
The car hes driving isnt a hatchback o.O its a 4 door sedan. Wtf you smokin? Wacky crack or somethin
lxlPhantomlxl your on crack he's not talking about the car he's just saying that he doesn't like the hatch backs because the guy in the video was saying it's a drawback that the newer models arnt available in hatch option
this kid is drunk :) who buys a Sti keeps is it stock exhaust manifold lower lip drop it low Cobb tune stage 2 400hp lol no one can touch it's about love u have to have a Sti to understand
Hasan Delice hahahahaha! 400 WHP enjoy driving a grenade. You need to do more then a tune to hit those numbers to make it reliable
Not upset about the video at all. Agreed on pretty much every point.
If you want a REALLY light weight and fast vehicle, get an FZ-07 Yamaha. Power to weight ratio 1:5.5. Cost under $7500 out the door.
Just bought a ‘21 WRX - couldn’t be happier 😎
Imprezas have been constantly getting uglier since 2003.

Stefan Unson I actually like the FD1 Civic way more than the EP3 Civic.
@@unknownunknowns the new Hondas are ugly af

2016 RS it's my Wait
Imho Id say just get the wrx and put the big sti spoiler and gold rims on it.
+Clesarie how can you live with yourself
f u google I drive an evo 9 so I live with myself pretty fine.
+Clesarie yay evos!!!
I'd rather have performance and functionality then looks. Plus I don't care what strangers see on outside anyone who actually knows me is aware of six speed bigger brakes bigger turbo stiffened suspention your a poser fake boy
That's what I did minus the rims
OMG dude... It's a sport car! Nobody keeps RPMs lower 3500 on a sport car... WTF.
Yes you do! You don't drive everywhere on 4K RPMs
Agree 100% .... You mentioned the exact reasons why I did not replace my 2005 Impreza with an STI
the bros are triggered
he didnt mention piston slap ringland failure and catastrophic engine failure of that EJ motor....they blow up all the time...
Wrx and sti both look like overblown corollas. Hideous.
TheDayisMineTrebeck wtf?
It does. It's too bulky in my opinion
It's a great thing, competition makes for incredible cars!
This really hits that itch that Top Gear Uk left behind for me. A honest review that's not afraid to show bad sides of the car. Thanks, keep it up and will be subbing your channel for content like this.
japanese cars are the best
get a hummer!
Not as good as Evo X. End of video.
+Alexander Shepard I'd disagree. Evo is heavier, lower powered, and not as nice on the inside as the new STI.
Engineering Explained Ever heard of FQ400?
you dont buy an evo for the interior.
Alexander Shepard that car is godly to bad it's illigal
I own a 14 Evo X MR and a 19 Sti Sport Tech...Evo X = surgical lazer Sti=chainsaw Both are great but the Evo rotates in corners, the Sti just plows through them. That does bring some fun, not knowing if you're going to hook in or not...
Eyes all the time on the road! Huge respect!
I agree with the engine comments. I have a legacy with the Ej25 as well and it really is last century compared to the direct injection/twin scroll turbos which are common on virtually all other manufacturers' vehicles.
who paid you for this vid, Ford, Mitsubishi, who???
Haha ur funny
😂😂
TH-cam
my buddy has got an STI. It's all true. Idk what you thought he was being unfair about. These are well known quirks of the STI. Most of them having to do with an engine thats well out dated.
I agree the STi Sucks, buy an Evo.
+Filip Hellquist WRC racing in the 90's and early 2000's is irrelevant in this day and age. Let it go.
Too bad they dont make them anymore
+filip hellquist im not choosing sides or anything infact my bother has the 2015 sti but in the days of wrc subaru had the likes of richard burns, colin mcrae and peter solberg some one the greatest rally drivers ever and were being made by prodrive compared to mitsubishi's low budget team with the likes of only tommi makkeinen
#1 reason it's fuuuuugly
Certainly better than any of the oh-so standard blue, black, white, or red (pretty much the same boring colors available from V or R).
bikebudha01 too bad I cant say my 2.5L TS hasnt been the most reliable blowing 2 gaskets unlike the sti?
im not upset with you - you know what your talking about 'Engineering Explained' - keep it coming
