Two months ago I sold my 2011 Subaru STI Sedan with 266,000km (~165,000 miles) and it was somehow the most reliable car I ever owned, this is even more surprising when considering that it was tuned (only about 310WHP), it had over 4 owners and it was originally a lease in Quebec Canada so it definitely had a rough life. The car was still on the original engine, transmission, turbo and head gaskets. I don't know if I got lucky with mine but I never had to replace anything in that car other than an O2 sensor. I am not saying that these cars are reliable but my STI was bulletproof and it was overall pretty well built. Great cars!

💯When I bought my 2019 I was initially considering possibly getting a WRX, but once I drove it, I was pretty let down by the transmission and shifter feel. I was coming from a 2005 Boxster S with Hydraulic Steering and a great shifter with modifications, so it was a big shoe to fill. Once I drove the STi, I was amazed at the difference between it and the WRX...To me, it's a night and day difference that is not really reflected when you just look at the specs. It's the choice for people who care more about driving FEEL. Same thing with the other models out there...I considered Type R(too ridiculous looking), and Golf R(too boring). STi is the goldilocks of the bunch in my opinion.
I drove a limited wrx and my current STI at the dealer before I bought it back to back and crazy the difference in driving experience. Totally different car. Both great, but the STI is an entirely different animal.
@@nicholaslowe6821 it’s not a gated shifter, but yeah, it does feel much better. Even more if you add shifter bushings and a transmission mount. The turbo lag is not an issue as long as you stay in the right RPM range, but yeah, it’s not as immediate as the WRX.
Beautiful car, very tastefully modified. I have been wanting one for a while, but they’ve gotten quite expensive now.. some day I will own a last gen STI.
Man, I had a couple of comfy cars before and honestly I was falling asleep behind the wheel in them. I needed something that was going to keep me awake and have some fun from time to time. Got a 15 Launch Edition and it's been bliss ever since. Going on two years now.

The STI is a vehicle that is intentionally bought for all the reasons you described. You dont just happen to end up with one. One of the comments mentioned an "analog feel" which I think is 100% accurate. I owned a 2006 Gray STI and regret getting rid of it. I think about it at least once per day. When I drive by one it feels strange like excitement and then a bit sad (hard to explain). I'll be in the market for a new truck soon (Gladiator Mojave) but I keep thinking of the STI. We'll dance again one day.
I always think whenever I drive mine - the reason we still love these cars so much is that they are the last connection to the Japanese golden age with the luxury of a modern vehicle. Even compared to driving an 05 blobeye STI, it feels like home
Dude my 13 sti hatchback was the most reliable car I’ve ever owned. I had a few Hondas, vw’s and 1 bmw that all were not reliable what so ever. Also after a few months of building my sti I knew the car inside and out like that back of my hand. I ended up with 245,000ish miles before a drunk driver hit me head on coming home from work one night and totaled it. This happened in 2020 and I’m finally going to buy another sti this weekend or next weekend I hope. Amazing and very fun cars. The community is great too
I recently bought a 2018 WRX Premium 2 months ago and your sti is exactly what i envisioned on mine except some different wheels & wingless, but that thing is just absolutely perfect.
Me in my 2015 sti at 106k miles and holding up amazingly with a stage 2 tune by brentuning. And i just love all the mods available for this car. Thats what got me to buy a subaru wrx sti.
Great video! I just switched from a ‘17 WRX to a new ‘21 STI and the difference is crazy! Such a joy to drive. Just got an ets catback yesterday I am dying to install it.
I've been driving my '07 subaru outback for 14 years now. Getting a new car every couple of years....you're throwing money away...but like you said...it's an experience that you're looking for. I'm holding out for the '22 wrx sti hopefully.
Sit are very reliable. It's when we abuse the motor, push it beyond its limit without making proper adjustments, then they give you trouble. But that's with any car. As long as you drive reasonably, responsibly, then it is good. It is ok to drive spiritedly once a while but to do it every day, and push it every time you drive, launch controls, then it gets expensive. I love my 2020 STI, and it is amazing. Every time puts a smile on my face. Exactly what you say, maintain it properly.
2016 STI Lapis Blue pearl....54k so far....oil changes twice a year...gone through front pads 3 times on second rotors, rear pads twice and second rotors. Will be doing diff, coolant, brake flush in the next few months....cost is way down compared to others....love driving this thing, no issues no complaints.

I had a 04 Wrx wagon sold it with 210k miles, it ran great and the buyer was so happy. But for reason my confidence in newer Subaru engines has gone down from friends that have 2017 and up sti’s. But man seeing your video is kind of changing my mind. Thanks for the vid, and love your set up with the wed sports, super clean.
I am the same here! I wanted an STI, but I had to settle with a pre-owned a 13 Subaru WRX on my college days instead because I could not afford an STI. 6-7 years later here I am putting only 25kish miles on it. All I did was a regular oil change with 60k miles maintenance. Now that I have a better job I am excited to upgrade in couple years when I save enough cash to pay it full price! Considering the 2022 STI will have a completely fresh design and at least 400 HP stock (rumored to be *cross fingers!*).
I just got my 2018 rally blue sti 11k miles this weekend. Absolutely love it. Got an air oil seperator and killer b oil pickup on the way. Maximum reliability! lol
watching these reviews and the fact that the car is mechanical and in some ways because of that a classic, is the reason that my father bought a 2020 sti
I know nothing bout subaru but here in Puerto Rico i don’t see them regularly in the streets unless its on a meet. But when i see one they sound and looks really beautiful. Not a big fan of them but, i do respect them, if you build it right it can throw down some mean pawer. Again beautiful looks like a doctor or lawyer’s vehicle really fancy!
My 2015 Sti has been great. It’s bone stock down to the exhaust. Which should be changing soon when I get it in the mail. But have had almost 6,000 problem free miles

Tbh only thing to keep this running forever is don't beat on it, keep up with maintenance and pray bro that's it. That car will run for a very long ass time
Thanks for this very encouraging vid. I'm going to hopefully pick up a 2021 STI Friday. I owned an 05, loved it, had to sell, then an 08 WRX, loved it, but that year was a disaster for Subaru and we had problems with a defective firewall where clutch was mounted. That was an anomaly for Subaru and a black mark for them in that year.., then a 2015 WRX, which also I needed to sell. But that too was a great car. But I traded it for a 17 Outback, but after 4 years I long for the Sti, so am pumped to go back to it. Your "testimony" is very cool, and thanks again.
Glad you’ve had good luck with it but I’d like to share my story because many TH-camrs only like to show the good and never the bad. I unfortunately have had the biggest love hate relationship with my 17 STI. I’m similar to you and I am very on top of maintenance. I have had the car since new and was running it with FBOs and EVERY supporting mod money can buy. Id also like to add this car is my daily and I’m not very hard on it at all. So all was going good until about 27k miles when it decide to develop a rod knock. The metal from the bearings wiped out everything and a new long block was needed along with everything else the metal had touched. I dropped it off at a very reputable shop and $16,000ish later I had a new long block installed with more fueling and a Dom 1.5xtr 10cm. This doesn’t included the prior 10k I threw at it before on parts and labor. So here I now sit always on edge with a 64k+ STI. I could of had a hell of a car with warranty for that. I suggest everyone unless your rolling in money to just leave it stock.
Sorry to hear your unfortunate issues with yours. One thing I wanted to mention is this video, but never did is that any performance oriented car will have that Achilles heal. Even the best of the best have catastrophic issues. However, it’s just a game we play when we modify our cars. Things can happen and we just have to deal with it. We all have to know that these things can happen going into it. I just find it funny when people blame the car when they are putting down crazy power on the stock block. Not to say that’s what you did, but there’s a good amount of people that blame the car and not the user/mods. I’m not just sharing the good. I’m just sharing my own personal experience. If something were to happen, I would 100% share it with everyone. This is just my experience with my 3 Subarus over the course of a decade and what I’ve done to keep that positive experience.
This is exactly what I’m trying to watch when I’m looking for a certain vehicle, just a simple video recording the car and not the narrator’s “selfie” angle. Like I don’t wanna see a person, I wanna see the beauty of the car. 70% car and 30% face I thin its a good balance. 😂 Good video bro keep it up!
Had a 08 hatch Sti I liked that look a lot better. Have a 17 Sti now and I would buy another. Do not care for the wing but being an iconic part of the car I would not remove it.
Beautiful car man. I just bought a 23 wrx sapphire blue last week. Love the rims on your car. I agree wrx is a great deal and really does check all the boxes. I had a Tacoma before the wrx and needed a change. Especially since Toyota Tacomas are pretty hard to find these days. On Long Island anyways. Plus markup. Subaru doesn’t ask for markup $$.
Had the opportunity to get STi but opted for the WRX for the FA. Plan is to get the newer STi once they work out most of the kinks and hope they don't shift everything to electronic. Watching this video makes me kinda wish I got the STi but too late I've already put too much $ into the WRX to go back now ✌
ive got a 2017, had it since the summer of 2016, only thing that broke was the temp sensor for outside, besides that no problems, even have the original pads with life on them still
Bought a used 2011 WRX back in 2018 and the engine went within a month of owning it! Ouch and today just went to my old subie dealer I worked at and got a 2021 STI! Brand new excited nervous but hopefully it will treat me a lot better than the other one!
I like to change the oil every 3,000 with Motul 8100 Excess. I got a 60,000 mile service coming up. Which will Probably be at a well known reputable shop. But have to take it somewhere Subaru certified cause my warranty told me I had to
It’s all about getting a reputable tuner. Don’t go for power, but reliability instead. You’ll have a healthier motor with a properly tuned STI than a stock STI. The stock map is pretty questionable.
This car makes total sense in the US, here in the U.K. the fuel is currently at $1.80 per litre. So just the fuel costs is enough to put most people off. Could anyone from the US comment on what the current price for fuel is over there for comparison.
With oil refineries switching to spring/summer blend fuel, which is more expensive than winter blend, regular 87 octane right now in Florida is around $2.80 a gallon. Winter blend was around $2.20. Note - our octane rating is different from Europe's. So our 87 octane fuel is around your 91 octane. Oh, and the US has something no European country has - if you know one please let me know - E85. Not only is it cheaper than normal fuel (about $1.95 last I saw) but is also higher octane (~105 octane) which equals you being able to push more power - especially in boosted applications. If you guys get that, it is a game changer!
Previous LGT wagon owner here. Subarus last no problem if you literally just do the maintenance when you are supposed to. It baffles me how incredibly lax a large number of people are about maintenance.
ive had mediocre cars my whole life. just normal cars. a to b saved him and finally bought a brand new rs3 in 2020 i couldnt stomach purchasing a new car, putting the best quality mods, just to sell it. i then i wonder if people who do that ever even owned their cars this is my 2nd year and i love it

STi is the goldilocks of the bunch in my opinion.
I drove a limited wrx and my current STI at the dealer before I bought it back to back and crazy the difference in driving experience. Totally different car. Both great, but the STI is an entirely different animal.
Just went and test drove a 16 STI love the gated shifter love the smooth shifting only thing I don’t like is with the bigger, turbo upgrade, boost lag
Only thing I don't like about my subie.. the rattles lol especially when you can't pinpoint where they're coming from. It drives me insane like hearing a leaky faucet drip 🤣
@@xil3ntkha0s hahaha! I understand that one! The backshelf rattle was an easy fix for me. Also thin pad on the trunk itself.
My 70k M3 had more interior rattles than my STI. Believe it or not haha. My STI is pretty darn solid.
@@Autofreakgarage I like the no frills way about the STI. Just get in, drive and have fun.
Simplicity at its finest.
Nice!! 32k??? My is a wrx 2015, and i'm about to hit 100k 🤪
And every day I enjoy it more😋
Its just the Best car I own so far. Love it. Is all about taking care and baby it. Nice vídeo!
I bet your car is fun to drive!
Something I do like about your Subaru is not the power but the reliability you have accomplished. Congratulations 🎊
I always think whenever I drive mine - the reason we still love these cars so much is that they are the last connection to the Japanese golden age with the luxury of a modern vehicle.
Even compared to driving an 05 blobeye STI, it feels like home
Agree!!
This review explains why there is so many subaru enthuseast. Thanks for the very detailed and passionate review man.
I love your carrrr
Love my 19 sti, keeping it. Such a fun car to drive and loads of aftermarket support.
How’s the engine? Looking at one for 30k with 23k mileage
OG owner of a 2015 STI wrb, it's stage 2 pro tuned and going strong! Love my Subie
Great video! I just switched from a ‘17 WRX to a new ‘21 STI and the difference is crazy! Such a joy to drive. Just got an ets catback yesterday I am dying to install it.
Love my 06 wrx. Very mechanical and raw feeling!
Prepping for engine build after letting my 15’ LE sit in my backyard for the last 8 months, all these damn videos are popping up in my recommended getting me excited to get back to driving the damn thing 🤣
I thought the engines were more efficient 2015+
2 months in with my 2021 STI, such a fun car to drive. Hoping to keep for many years.
Maximum reliability! lol
2 years with my 2019 STI 14 k miles and love it
Just bought a 2015 sti with 45k i love it so far. Nice looking car man
watching these reviews and the fact that the car is mechanical and in some ways because of that a classic, is the reason that my father bought a 2020 sti
Is it still good? I’m considering getting a 2015
currently have a 2013 jetta (manual) and it’s my first time driving stick, been looking at some subarus and heard nothing but great things about them. might look into one for myself in the future! love the car man
I ordered an STI 2 weeks ago, 6 more weeks to go 🥲 longest wait ever hahaha very excited 😛
Lucky you. Here in Australia no brand new STI's are available. I need to wait for next year's model.
Coming on year 7 with my 2016 sti. Am still in love with this thing. If anything I’m able to appreciate it even more, now that I’m more established in life 🙏
I enjoy my sti 2020 every single minute driving as a daily 💯💯💯
3 years, 50k miles on my 18' wrx. Dont regret a single thing except maybe putting so many miles on it lol
hahaha
Tbh only thing to keep this running forever is don't beat on it, keep up with maintenance and pray bro that's it. That car will run for a very long ass time
Man you STI is so clean! I have a 16 wrx basically stock, just axle back really. Your making me want a lip kit and wheels now. lol
(Laura's husband by the way, not Laura).
I’m glad the video helped encourage you to get back into an STI. Best of luck and cheers to your soon to be new ownership!
Love it! Your review is so honest and full of emotion and passion 🔥👌🏽✨ can’t wait until I get my sti one day!
This is exactly what I’m trying to watch when I’m looking for a certain vehicle, just a simple video recording the car and not the narrator’s “selfie” angle. Like I don’t wanna see a person, I wanna see the beauty of the car. 70% car and 30% face I thin its a good balance. 😂
Good video bro keep it up!
The car is much more pleasant to look at than my face haha. Thanks for the support.
I own 2013 STI, couldn’t be happier!
I am a young man who loves the subie but I will start with a bugeye and then I will buy the 18 🔥🤞🏻
I’m torn on buying one here in 2023 with less than 60knmiles for like 22 to 26k but you clearly make more money than a concrete guy from Iowa
I just picked up a 2015 STI Launch Edition and I love it
That’s great to hear about the reliability, I wonder what the next gen will be like!
Had a 08 hatch Sti I liked that look a lot better. Have a 17 Sti now and I would buy another. Do not care for the wing but being an iconic part of the car I would not remove it.
Lord bro I need one soon
Beautiful car man. I just bought a 23 wrx sapphire blue last week. Love the rims on your car. I agree wrx is a great deal and really does check all the boxes. I had a Tacoma before the wrx and needed a change. Especially since Toyota Tacomas are pretty hard to find these days. On Long Island anyways. Plus markup. Subaru doesn’t ask for markup $$.
my dream car honestly got an appointment tomorrow to look at 2018
Had the opportunity to get STi but opted for the WRX for the FA. Plan is to get the newer STi once they work out most of the kinks and hope they don't shift everything to electronic. Watching this video makes me kinda wish I got the STi but too late I've already put too much $ into the WRX to go back now ✌
Can’t go wrong with either the wrx or STI. Both great cars!
The amount of effort you have put in this car makes me really believe you wont just let it go...
I do this with every car I own haha
Just had my first kid in August.. went from a 2015 Si to a 2018 CR-V which wasn't fun so now switching to a 2016 STI
Mines for sale if interested!
@@Autofreakgarage I was able to straight trade at the dealership I work at! Lol but yours looks sick
Going to get my STI 2020 Kenrai next week, can't wait!!! 1 of the 75 of canada!
ive got a 2017, had it since the summer of 2016, only thing that broke was the temp sensor for outside, besides that no problems, even have the original pads with life on them still
Bought a used 2011 WRX back in 2018 and the engine went within a month of owning it!
Which will
Probably be at a well known reputable shop. But have to take it somewhere Subaru certified cause my warranty told me I had to
Subscribed. Excellent video, i'm currently shopping for an STI, so it was very useful to hear a long term review, many thanks!
Glad to have helped! Mine is currently for sale if interested.
I have an frs but want to upgrade to the sti
2019 sti here love this car so much!
Love my STI! I do wish I was more confident in doing performance mods/tuning mine. It’s been great stock but I’m afraid of it blowing up if i tune it
It’s all about getting a reputable tuner. Don’t go for power, but reliability instead. You’ll have a healthier motor with a properly tuned STI than a stock STI. The stock map is pretty questionable.
@@Autofreakgarage what do you recommend for tune
I use to stare and admire your STi back when you had the Enkei rs05RR. Just wished I bought an STi instead of the WRX back in '18.
Those wheels look good it matches the grill and lip
Thanks for the review, really helpful. I now know this is the right car for me.
Lots of people think they can just drive the car without doing anything. They chose mods over maintenance.
ive had mediocre cars my whole life. just normal cars. a to b
saved him and finally bought a brand new rs3 in 2020
i couldnt stomach purchasing a new car, putting the best quality mods, just to sell it.
i then i wonder if people who do that ever even owned their cars
this is my 2nd year and i love it
I am going after my lease is up next month. I am excited to get a 2021 STI.
Nice! You're videos inspired me to get a 2020 STi. It's really a cool car, but now, I've been thinking about trading it in bc my wife doesn't drive a 6-speed manual. I'm looking at a used 17' C43, lol. Yet, the STi would always be my favorite car. We'll see. I already ordered an HKS twin tail exhaust and tbe HKS Aspec coilover set. I like both cars, lol.
Im getting the 2021 sti around September cant wait
nice... this wat i was searching for. Pls make another video like 8 years ownership or final video where the car cant be repaired further... etc
awesome to the progression of your car!
Love the video.. well put together.
Hey man nice sti! Love the sti I had 2010 hatchback long time ago and it was such a raw driving experience car but sold it later due to being it too stiff for daily Cus I had back problems. Now I drive a 2017 gs 350 awd f sport and I love it but I would seriously consider the sti again for a second car.
I traded in my 2016 BMW x1 for a 17 WRX and i wish id done it sooner i know all about the crazy Bimmer service prices.
CLEAN BUILD INSIDE AND OUT
Funny that. I was just thinking how much I miss the electric steering of the WRX. I traded it in for an STI.
23k in 4 years? I put 200k on mine in 16 months
😂😂I’ve no joke put 40k on my car in a lil over 2 years
had my17 sti since june 2017, at 23000 kms it had ringland faiulure and short block supplied with warrant, stock car by the way and my 2nd ej257 engine with ringland previously on my06 sti, other than rattling in the centre console somewhere and the rear around the subwoofer everything else is good
Dirty JERZ with no front license plate? What a rebel! lmao. Beautiful car. Blob eye sti owner and I'm going to buy one of these soon as my daily.
Haha haven’t ran a front plate on my cars in a decade.
@@Autofreakgarage Lol when I was running a rsx type s I got pulled over so many times. Always ran front plate since especially in the cop magnet. You know how they feel about subies around here
